nee Klein
Carol J. Sterbenz nee Klein, age 76. A lifetime Ingleside, IL resident died on Friday, March 28, 2003 at Libertyville Manor Care in Libertyville, IL. She was born on August 15, 1926 to John and Hazel (nee Juul) Klein in Chicago, IL.
She was a housewife who enjoyed and loved her family; was a member of both the Ingleside and Antioch United Methodist Churches and was very active in various church activities. She loved gardening, baking and camping.
She is survived by her son David (Colleen) Sterbenz of Ingleside; her daughter, Vicky (Mark) Thoene of Wauconda; her grandson: Cale Sterbenz of Ingleside and by her granddaughter, Heather Thoene of Fort Collins, CO and by her sister-in-law: Nancy Klein, Long Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Sterbenz on October 16, 1992 with whom she was united in marriage on February 7, 1948 at Ingleside United Methodist Church in Ingleside; and by a brother, Richard J. Klein and a sister, Constance Rose Johnson.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at the K.K. HAMSHER FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake (1 block west of Rte. 12, 1/2 block north of Grand Ave., on Pistakee Lake Road). Burial will follow at E. Fox Lake cemetery, Old Monaville Rd. in Lake Villa, IL. Randall A. Varno
Randall A. Varno, 22, of Round Lake died Saturday, March 29, 2003 in Fox Lake, Illinois.
He was born June 6, 1980 in Chicago, the son of Rueben and Sandra (nee Swiderski) Varno.
Randy attended Beach Elementary School, McGee Middle School and graduated from Round Lake Community Unit District #116 High School in 1998. He continued his education at Aurora University, College of Lake County and attended Northern Illinois University with a college major in Business Management with his friend Dan Schroeder. Randy's parents remarked how "Randy was a truly happy person. He always had a smile on his face." An avid sports fan along with Dan, they had a great interest in Baseball, Basketball and Softball. Their goal was to open their own Sports Bar.
Survivors include his parents, Rueben and Sandra of Round Lake; a sister, Robyn Ann of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL; uncles, Wayne Swiderski, Jerry Varno, Richard (Susan) Varno, Robert (Heidi) Varno, Ralph (Elizabeth) Varno; and aunts, Sharon (Russ) Hardesty and Leota (Robert) Lisowski.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; paternal grandparents; and great uncle, Richard Swiderski.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 1, 2003 from 2 to 9 PM at the JUSTEN'S ROUND LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 222 N. Rosedale Ct, Round Lake, IL, 60073.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 1 PM in the funeral home with Rev. Lisle Kauffman officiating. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park, Libertyville, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials would be greatly appreciated to Randy's family.

Kathleen M. Behm
Kathleen M. Behm, 80, of Grayslake passed away March 28, 2004 at her residence. She was born May 11, 1923 in Gages Lake the daughter of the late Robert Mogg and Mary Norton. Mrs. Behm earned her B.A. at Lake Forest College and taught in the Grayslake school system for over 30 years. She was also a member of St. Gilbert Catholic Church in Grayslake.
She leaves her children, Willard Behm of Rocky Ford, CO, Linda Behm and Steven Meyer of Denver, CO, Mary Kay (John) McNeill of Antioch; her grandchildren, Katherine McNeill, Rebecca McNeill, Jeremy Behm-Meyer, Christopher Behm-Meyer, Marcus Behm, Kate Behm, Nicholas Behm, Elizabeth Behm; great-granddaughter, Grace Hiltz; her siblings, Jim (Lois) Tatum, Virginia Vasey; Ralph Behm, Rose Schulz, Viola Plotz, and Roy Jarrett.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Behm on February 27, 1996; her sister, Joan Jarrett and brother, Willard Behm.
Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. Interment will follow at St. Mary cemetery in Mundelein, (Fremont Centre). Friends of the family may visit at the STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, 410 E. Mrs. Amanda Pierce Christian
Mrs. Amanda Pierce Christian, lovingly called "Auntie," departed this life on Thursday, March 25, 2004. She was born on August 4, 1912 on Blue Hill in Jefferson County, Mississippi. Her parents were Allen and Mittie Pierce. She was the second of their three children. She had one daughter, Florence L. Bailey.
She accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized at Zion Baptist Church in Jefferson County, Mississippi. She came to Waukegan in January of 1957 where she met and married the late Rev. Hubert Christian. She was a long time member of Gideon Missionary Baptist Church in Waukegan. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the North Shore Ministers Wives and Widows. We were truly blessed to have her in our lives sharing her stories and words of wisdom. She was feisty and vibrant and we will miss her laughter and sharp wit.
She leaves to cherish her life in memory her one & only child Florence Bailey; one sister-in-law, Idell Jones; seven grandchildren, Barbara Gaines, Judith White (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Sherrie (Victor) Bolden, Michael Bailey, Brenda Taylor, Janice Bradford, and Amanda (Dwayne) Daniel; fifteen great-grandchildren, and eighteen great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Amanda was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Hubert Christian, her parents, Allen and Mittie Pierce, her brothers, Joseph Pierce, Will Pierce, John and James Jones, her sisters, Ollie and Rosie, her son-in-law, James Bailey, her granddaughter, Florence Bailey Rencher, her great-grandson, Jeffrey Gaines, and her great-great-grandson, Michol Jordane Bailey.
Funeral services will be at 12 Noon on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at Gideon Missionary Baptist Church 1500 Ridgeland Ave., Waukegan, IL with Pastor Wade A. Stevenson, officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Hill City cemetery, Vicksburg, MS. Visitation will be at 11:00 A.M. until time of service at the church.

Eleanor Katherine Cliff
Eleanor Katherine Cliff, age 86, of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, formerly of Waukegan, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Carey Manor. She was born September 23, 1917 in Plover, Wisconsin, the daughter of Felix and Mary (Wojak) Bannach.
She attended schools in Waukegan, and lived in Santa Barbara, CA for many years, returning to Lake County in 1949. She was an avid golfer. She was owner-operator of Wally's Motel in Gurnee, IL, for 25 years. She was a member of St. Dismas Catholic Church in Waukegan, Orchard Hills Ladies Golf League, Grand Bowl Wood Choppers, Grand Bowl Belles Bowling League, and St. Dismas Womens Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (David) Campbell of Waukegan and Kathy (Daniel) Dever of Waukegan; eight grandchildren, James Andrew Dever, John (Kathy) Dever, Russell Wallace (Kathy) Dever, Jeffrey Allen (Rhea) Dever, Dana Marie Dever, Robert David Campbell, Shari Lynn Campbell, and Lisa Kay (Robert) Macarra; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, William Mangan (January 27, 1948), Wallace Witte (January 8, 1974), and Edward E. Cliff (August 11, 2000); five sisters, Anna Niemann, Matilda Presley, Helen Nesbitt, Fran Mollohan, Esther Stonesifer; and six brothers.

Dr. William E. Cunningham, Jr.
Dr. William E. Cunningham, Jr. born in Chicago, April 6, 1920. His family moved to North Chicago and he graduated from Waukegan Township High School. Along with his family he attended Trinity AME Church, Waukegan. He then received a degree in pre-medicine at Northwestern University in 1942 and his medical degree at Howard University School of Medicine in 1945.
The following year, he interned at the former Homer G Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, then completed his residency in internal medicine, first at Provident Hospital in Chicago and also served on the staffs of Michael Reese and Mercy Hospitals.
He joined Michael Reese as an internist in 1949, while also opening a private practice. He later retired from Michael Reese in 1997 as its senior attending internist.
Dr. Cunningham served his country in both World War II and the Korean War. He attained the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army and the rank of Brigadier General in the Illinois National Guard. He served as commander of the 184th Medical Collecting Company. The company, an all-black unit, was the first guard unit in the Chicago area to be summoned to active duty.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; daughter, Paula; a brother, Dr. Robert Cunningham; and two sisters, Ruth King and Minnie Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Minnie Lee, a brother, Aaron and sister-in-law Wilma.
Funeral services were held at Quinn AME Chapel in Chicago.

Mabel Duarte, age 19, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2004 at her residence.
The funeral mass for Mabel will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 450 Keller Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085. Friends are asked to meet at church 9:00 AM Wednesday. The interment will immediately follow at Warren cemetery, 1495 N. cemetery Road, Gurnee, Illinois 60031. Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday, March 30, 2004.

Walter R, Elfering
Walter R. Elfering, 79, of Lake Forest, IL passed away peacefully Sunday, March 28, 2004 surrounded by his family. Walter was a retired carpenter for Neimeyer Brothers, Inc. in Lake Forest.
He is survived by his wife of 50 1/2 years, Annamari; seven children, Mary Goosman of Vernon Hills, Kathy (David) Biondi of Lake Forest, Patty (Peter)Rebechini of Cedar Park, TX, George (Triona) of West Columbia, SC, John (Lela) of Paddock Lake, WI, Peter (Katie) of Zion and Richard (Jennifer) of Wausaukee, WI. He was also survived by 17 grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye, Don Goosman (fiancee Melanie Reynolds) of Aurora, IL, Stephanie (fiance Scott Taylor) Biondi of Anoka, MN, Gary Goosman of Vernon Hills, Eric and Amy Rebechini of Cedar Park, TX, Stephen and Brian Elfering of West Columbia, SC, J.R. (fiancee Lisa Del'Ve) Lavish of Paddock Lake, WI, Darlene, Charlotte, Raynard, Justin, Joseph, Amanda, Catherine, Christopher and Gerard of Wausaukee, WI; a brother, Noel Elfering and a sister, Sr. Michele Elfering, C.S.J.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Felix and Ruby Elfering; three brothers and a sister.

Robert F. Kamensky
Robert F. Kamensky, 72, a Fox Lake resident for the past 8 years, passed away Sat. March 27, 2004 at the Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born April 28, 1931 in Uniontown, PA and was a former resident of Pittsburgh, PA and Libertyville. Bob began his career as a reporter for the Uniontown Morning Herald, becoming its editor by the age of 21. He later began a public relations career in Harrisburg, PA, where he did marketing for several advertising agencies before co-founding the J.L. Deerlove Affiliates in Chicago.
Bob enjoyed writing and had numerous articles published in newspapers and magazines, wrote several books and many speeches. He also enjoyed being an election volunteer, first in Libertyville and later Fox Lake.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy; 3 children, Kimberly Messadieh of West Hills, CA, David (Carole) Kamensky of Mundelein and Barry (Francine) Kamensky of Gurnee; 5 Grandchildren, Joe, Jessica, Graham, Shannon and Lauren.

Mary A. Peterson Strang, age 98, life-long resident of Lake County, died March 28, 2004 at Manor Care Nursing Home, Palos Heights. She was born March 5, 1906 in Zion, Illinois.
She was a member of Annunciation of Our Lady Episcopal Church, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, AARP, Waukegan Women's Club, Victory Hospital Volunteer with 3500 hours of service. She was a retired corsetiere from Hein's Clothing Store.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte (Robert) VanTreeck of Tinley Park; grandchildren, Robert (Elena) VanTreeck of Evanston, IL, William VanTreeck of Papua, New Guinea, Mary Beth (Wayne) Hemzacek of Westminster, CO, and Julie (Robert) Prinz of Aurora, IL; and eight great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Jonathan VanTreeck, Katherine, Noah and Allison Hemzacek; and Timothy, Zachary, and Rachel Prinz; and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Peterson of Arvaca, CO.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elis Peterson and Theodore Strang; a brother, Walter; and three sisters, Evelyn, Charlotte, and Helen; and her parents, Charlotte and Will Scott.

Sharon E. McGaughey
Sharon E. McGaughey, 45 passed away March 26, 2004 at Desert Banner Hospital in Mesa AZ, after a short battle with cancer. She was born March 14, 1959 in Waukegan, IL.
Sharon was a lifelong resident of Waukegan, an avid Cubs fan, and a member of Women of the Moose. She worked for Riley Construction in Waukegan.
Sharon is survived by a special friend, Tim Tansey; siblings, Michael McGaughey of Milwaukee, WI, Maureen McGaughey of Antioch, IL, Bridget Krakovsky of Round Lake, IL, Eileen Quist of Kenosha, WI, Coleen (Donny) Baker of Zion, IL, Kevin (Megan) McGaughey of Wadsworth, IL, Sheila (John) Dempsey of Arlington Heights, IL; nieces and nephews, Kelly (Scot) Kurek, Jason Quist, Jessica and Abigail Grover, Amanda Fosterling, Kevin Baker, Charlie, Patrick, and Ryan Dempsey; and cat Jessie Ann.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene S. McGaughey (1989), and Elizabeth J. McGaughey (1993); and a nephew, Jeremy M. Govekar (1999).

Robert W. Paquette
Robert W. Paquette, age 56, of Lake Villa, IL, formerly of Mundelein, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago, IL.
He was born in Bethesda, Maryland, on November 12, 1947, the son of Elvina and the late Roy. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam era.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia. They were married on May 26, 1973. Also surviving are his children, Mike, Joe, Tom, and Dan; his mother, Toots Bennett; his brothers and sister, Rodney (Linda), Douglas (Linda) and Shelley (Rick) Buckhotz.
Memorial services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at RINGA FUNERAL HOME, 122 S. Rte. 83 (Milwaukee Ave.), Lake Village, IL 60046. Family will visit with friends and relatives from 10 AM until the time of services on Saturday. Info 847-356-2146

Claire E. "Betty" Ryan
Claire E. "Betty" Ryan, age 85 of Kenosha died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at United Hospital Systems KMCC. Born on April 14, 1918 in Council Bluffs, IA, she was the daughter of the late James Earle and Viola Mae (Lux) Kelsey.
As a young girl she moved to Duluth, MN, where she attended local schools. She also attended Nursing School in Minneapolis. As a registered nurse, she worked at a variety of Hospitals, Doctor's offices and public health departments.
On November 3, 1942, she married McDermott E. Ryan. After her marriage she and her husband lived throughout the Midwest. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1996.
She came to Kenosha in 1997. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the Red Hat Society, and Daughters of the American Revolution and volunteered for the Disabled American Veterans Program. She was a very good cook, enjoyed crafts and was a people person, as much a mother to her sons-and daughter-in-law as to her own children. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors include her son, Jeff (Dorothy) Ryan of Mt. Prospect, IL; two daughters, Cynthia Ryan-Brecheisen of Kenosha, Sheila (John) Bott of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Virginia (James) Bryant of Sacramento, CA, Julia Kelsey of Sacramento, CA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Claire E. "Betty" Ryan will be held on Saturday, April 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church (5900-7th Ave.). Private interment will be held. Visitation for Mrs. Ryan will be held on Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the HANSEN-LENDMAN FUNERAL HOME. Arrangements are in the care of the Hansen-Lendman Funeral Home 262-654-2136 or
