Derek W. Samorez
Derek W. Samorez, 34, of Gurnee, IL, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2005, at St. Therse Hospital in Waukegan.
Derek was born on November 3, 1970 into a world to be filled with many challenges for him. At three months he had the first of many surgeries to attempt to correct a condition known as "pseudoarthrosis of the tibia", one of several known symptoms of the devastating disease "neurofibromatosis". He endured bone grafts in his left tibia, insertions of titanium plates, screws, and rods, leg lengthening devices, staphylococcus infections, body casts, leg braces, and strong pain medications, all under the auspices of the very wonderful doctors and staff at Shriners Hospital for Crippled children in Chicago. Crutches became a part of his being and he moved as fast as all the kids on two good legs; there was literally no stop in him.
The many surgeries stretched into his teenage years, finally coming to a halt after graduation from Warren Township High School in June, 1989. At 19 he received the pronouncement by his doctors that "the graft has taken, the bone if solidly weight-bearing- Derek, you're good to go!" He got a job, attended some CLC classes, and enjoyed life. Jump to age 21, when it all began to fall apart again. The staph infection lurking in his body reared up and the once solid bone graft began to erode. For nine full months Derek battled ravishing infection-until his doctors told him there was no hope. "We can't cure if...your leg will have to be taken to save your life." On May 28, 1993, the leg was amputated below the knee and he was sent home to heal. Heal he did, and within a few months he was fitted with a preliminary prosthesis. In a few weeks he was walking on two good legs and a few months later he told his mother, "Ma-all I ever wanted was to be able to walk strong and stand tall." She replied, "And you are sure doing that, Derek."
Life appeared to be going along on a fairly even keel when phantom limb pain and the physical and mental stresses of all his life caught up with him in May, 1996. Derek had a complete mental breakdown and was diagnosed as being bipolar/manic-depressive. Another hospital, different doctors, more medications seemed to get him back into what passed for a somewhat "normal" life-whatever that is. He had experience working many different jobs over the years and knew quite a bit about a lot of "stuff". He was a very helpful, kind and caring man and adored the dogs and cats he had over the years-even the cats would often come running when he called their names.
Derek is survived by his parents, Walter M. and Carol Hahn Samorez of Gurnee; a sister, Elisabeth (Steve) Schultz of Poplar Grove, IL; and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins on both parents' sides. He had many longtime friends-among them Charlie, Dave, Kurt, Mikey, Randy and so many others he could always depend on.
Welcoming him in his new location are his loving Grandma and Grandpa Hahn and Grandma and Grandpa Samorez; as well as a few others, all of whom must be as happy to see him as we, here, are sad to lose him.
Arrangements are being made through the Marsh Funeral Home, Gurnee, for cremation and there will be no service at this time-only because his parents can't bring themselves to that just yet. Perhaps there will be a memorial celebrating his short life at a later date. Derek was a truly good guy and we miss him much more than can be expressed in any words. Please pray for Derek's soul.
Anyone wishing to make a contribution in Derek's name may send it to: Shriners Hospital, 2211 N. Oak Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60707, phone: 773-622-5400; the Uptown Cafe, 300 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085 (run by the Lake County Chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness): or to any no-kill animal shelter or animal rescue organization.
