Ida Dawson
Services for Ida L. Dunbar Dawson, 95, of Kankakee were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington.
The former Lovington and Lake City resident passed away at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001 in her daughter’s home in Kankakee.
Ida was born Nov. 12, 1905, the daughter of Harvey and Ruth Threewit Markley in Fayette County, the oldest of eight children. She married C.W. Dunbar Jan. 11, 1927, and he preceded her in death on January 10, 1951. She then married H.O. Dawson in October, 1960, and he preceded her in death in November 1967. She has been a member of the Lovington Christian Church since 1942, had worked at Munchs Drugstore in Lovington, was postmistress at Lake City from 1967 to 1979 and also did sewing and alterations in her home.
Ida made her home in Lovington from 1942 until 1960 and in Lake City from 1960 to 1995, when she moved to Kankakee to make her home with her daughter.
Surviving is her daughter, Vivian Brumitt of Kankakee; a very special friend, Debby Sherwood of Sullivan; brother, Ivan of Kankakee; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers and one son-in-law.
She loved flowers, gardening, cooking, crocheting and people.
At her request, memorials are suggested to the Lovington Ambulance Service.
Carl Ekiss
Funeral services for I. Carl Ekiss, 106, of Decatur were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Burial was in the Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany with full military rites by Sullivan American Legion Post #68.
He died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001 in the McKinley Court Nursing Home in Decatur.
Mr. Ekiss was born Nov. 8, 1894 in Bethany, the son of William D. and Clara L. Kennedy Ekiss. He retired in 1957 from the Main Decatur Post Office after 31 years of service. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees, Sullivan American Legion Post #68 and was a World War I Army veteran serving with Barraks #341. He married Maye Austin Feb. 7, 1929, and she died Oct. 22, 1982.
Survivors include his granddaughter, Vicki Romano Schroeder and her husband Chuck of Estes Park, Col.; nephews, Carl Henson of Mt. Zion, Troy Henson and Lloyd Henson, both of Decatur and son-in-law, Paul Romano of Sullivan.
One daughter, Adelyn, and one brother and sister preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to DMH Hospice Care or to the donor’s choice.
John Ives
John Robert Ives, 72, of Sullivan, formerly of San Diego, Cal. died July 27, 2001 at home after a year long battle with cancer. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held in San Diego at a later date. Arrangements are by the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan.
John was born March 2, 1929 in Long Beach, Cal. He was the son of John C. Bigham and Margaret Glover Bigham Ives. He retired after 37 years in the aerospace and aircraft manufacturing field from Rhor Industries in Chula Vista, Cal. He married Phyllis E. Gallupe Jan. 22, 1949 in Yuma, Ariz. He and his wife enjoyed many years traveling in their motor home with their good friends "The Whatevers" camping group from San Diego.
Surviving are his wife; daughters, Cindy Haegen and husband Jan of Sullivan and Sandra Diane Seals and husband Steve of Visalia, Cal.; son, John Christopher Ives of Barstow, Cal.; five grandchildren, Josh Haegen of La Mesa, Cal., Jacob Haegen of Mattoon, Matt Seals of Visalia, Cal., Nick Seals of San Luis Obispo, Cal. and Kayla Ives of Barstow, Cal.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Memorials to the Faith Lutheran Church of Sullivan, Lincolnland Hospice or the Carle Cancer Care Center of Champaign-Urbana are suggested.
Paul Bryant
Cdr. Paul G. Bryant, US Navy retired, 75, of Blue Belle, Pa. died Monday, July 30, 2001 in the Mercy Suburban General Hospital.
Services for the former Sullivan resident will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, Pa. with visitation from 7 to 9 tonight (Wednesday) and 8 p.m. Masonic services in the Shaeff-Myers Funeral Home in Ambler, Pa.
Born May 17, 1926 in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of Paul K. and Lillian Shake Bryant. He received his commission as an ensign in the US Navy June 4, 1948 after graduating from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., then received his naval aviator wings in September 1949. He served the following commands, USS Wasp, USS Randolph and USS Hornet. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1973 after 25 years of service, he pursued a second career as acting dean of students/instructor/counselor at the Delaware Technical Community College until 1989. He was a member of the GATSME Train Club in Ft. Washington, Pa., was a member of Concordia Masonic Lodge #67 AF & AM in Jenkintown, Pa. which he joined in 1991, was a member the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, Pa. and was inducted into the Eagle Scouts while a member of Boy Scout Troop 39 in Sullivan and served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts in various locations over a period of 25 years. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Walker in 1948, and she survives.
Other survivors include sons, Paul Jr. of King of Prussia, Pa., Kenneth of Downingtown, Pa., Dale of Montgomeryville, Pa., Douglas of St. Cloud, Fla., Christopher of Harrisburg, Pa. and Edward of Springfield, Va.; sister, Maryellen of Rice Lake, Wis.; brother, William of Goldrein, Va.; and nine grandchildren.
Alice Hagerman
Services for Mrs. Philip (Alice M. Kenney) Hagerman, 84, of Sullivan were held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ in rural Sullivan. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan with arrangements by the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan.
She died at 2:35 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2001 in the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mt. Zion.
Born Jan. 16, 1917 in Sullivan, she was the daughter of George and Ruby Vandeveer Kenney. She had been the owner of The Dress House in Sullivan and was a member of the Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ. She married Philip Hagerman Oct. 6, 1937, and he preceded her in death April 21, 1988.
Survivors include sons, John Hagerman, Dennis Hagerman and Barry Hagerman, all of Sullivan; brother, Marvin "Toad" Kenney of Sullivan; sister, Mabel Whitchurch of Rockford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
Marilyn Kuny
Memorial services for Mrs. Frederick (Marilyn Billman) Kuny, 73, of Medford, Ore. were held Sunday in the Anna Maria Creekside Retirement Resort in Medford with the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashland, Ore. in charge of arrangements.
The former Decatur resident died Friday, July 27, 2001 in the Providence Medford Medical Center in Medford.
Born Nov. 6, 1927 in Sullivan, she was the daughter of Elliott and Ruth Billman. She was a 1945 graduate of Decatur High School and attended Millikin University. She served as president of the Decatur YWCA, president of the Pi Phi Alumni Assn. at Millikin and president of the local Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was also a director of the Gov. Oglesby Mansion restoration project in Decatur and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She married Frederick Landon Kuny June 15, 1950, and he died in 1999.
Survivors include sons, Frederick "Fritz" B. Kuny of Ashland, Ore. and Christopher "Chris" Kuny of Houston, Texas, and three grandchildren.
Pauline Cribbet
Services for Mrs. Max (Pauline F. Travis) Cribbet, 77, of Bethany were held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in the Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany.
She died at 8:43 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002 in her home.
Born Aug. 3, 1925 in Moultrie County, she was the daughter of Melvin and Haline Rhodes Travis. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star. She married Max Starr Cribbet July 30, 1944 in Bethany, and he died April 2, 1989.
Survivors include sons, Gregory Travis Cribbet of Columbus, Ohio, Bradley Stuart Cribbet of Bethany and Steven Max Cribbet of Taylorville; daughter, Donna Sue Bucklin of Mt. Zion; mother of Decatur; sister, Dora Lee Dowers of Decatur; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church are suggested.
