Barbara Doeding
Services for Barbara F. Doeding, 42, of Mattoon were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon. Burial will be held at a later date.
She died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002 in Carbondale.
Born Dec. 31, 1959 in Shelbyville, she was a daughter of Donald and Marilyn Maxine Friese Doeding. She graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in 1979 and was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg. She was employed by the PSR program with the Coles County Mental Health Center.
Survivors include a son, Seth and his father, Bob Dunst of Mattoon; brother, Don of Victoria, B.C.; and sisters, Mrs. Art (Karen) Warnke of Springfield, Rachel Doeding of Pawleys Island S.C., Mrs. Larry (Rosanne) Myer of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Debbie Matthew of Sullivan.
Memorials to the Seth Dunst Education Fund in care of Schillings Funeral Home or the Coles County Mental Health PSR program are suggested.
Paul Michels Jr.
Services for Paul Robert Michels Jr., 50, of Sadorus were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Freese Funeral Home in Tolono. Burial was in Bailey Memorial Cemetery in Tolono.
The former Sullivan resident died at 7 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2002 in Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Born Jan. 19, 1952 in Champaign, he was the son of Paul R. Sr. and Mary Ruth Glenagene Wynn Michels. He graduated from Commercial College in Champaign in 1979 and National College in Rapid City, S.D. He owned and operated The Pallet Co. in St. Joseph.
Survivors include his father of Sadorus; brothers, James K. Michels and Connie Eugene Michels, both of Sadorus; and sisters, Mrs. Donald (Betty) Book of Sullivan and Mrs. Kenneth (Mary Sue) Standifer of Tyler, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials to the Sadorus Fire Protection Dist. are suggested.
Emil Vanatta
Services for Emil R. Vanatta, 94, of Hidalgo were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial was in the Aten Cemetery in Hidalgo.
He died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002 in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Coles County.
Born May 4, 1908 in Hidalgo, he was the son of Levi and Maude Myers Vanatta. He was the retired owner of the Hidalgo Grocery Store and a member of the Hidalgo Christian Church. He married Lena Cummins June 25, 1927, and she died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Robert Vanatta of Bethany; daughters, Jewell Bowers of Hidalgo, Mara Vanatta of Effingham and Jeanette Matson of Mattoon; sister, Clara Dunne of Greenup; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Four brothers, one sister and one grandson preceded him in death.
Sara Villalobos
Graveside services for Sara Michelle Villalobos, infant daughter of Adrian Alredo and Michelle Lynn Green Villalobos, were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the French Cemetery in Allenville with the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan in charge of arrangements.
She died at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002.
She was born July 11, 2002 in Decatur.
Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Cheryl and Robert Cherry of Windsor, Tracey Green of Sullivan, Lucia Villalobos of El Salvador and Jose Guillen of Los Angeles, Cal.; great-grandparents, Betty Tilford of Windsor, Sara Guillen of Los Angeles and Ella Varvil of Sullivan; and brothers, Seth Bricker and Caleb Villalobos, both of Mattoon.
Memorials to the family are suggested.
‘Dink’ Ford
Carl “Dink” Ford, 82, of Fountain Run, Ky. died Monday, June 2, 2003 in the Monroe County Medical Center in Tomkinsville, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5 in the Hughes Funeral Home in Fountain Run with visitation from 5 tonight(Wednesday) and again at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Akersville Cemetery in Monroe County, Ky.
He was the son of John and Loretta Copas Ford, and they preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Richard, Rue, Jim and Lawrence Ford, and sisters, Bassie Ford and Edna Fergerson.
He was a painter and carpenter, a veteran of World War II and a member of the Akersville Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Dyer Ford; a son, Lowell Ford and daughter-in-law, Shirley Ford of Bethany; brother, Ralph “Bully” Ford of Moss, Tenn.; sister, Modena Ford of Gamaliel, Ky.; two granddaughters, Amy Harris and her children, Lauren and Drew Harris of Sullivan, and granddaughter, Abby Stankiewicz, her husband Pete and their children, Griffin, Nicholas and Andrew of Rockford.
Glen Grindley
Services for Glen Andrew Grindley, 91, of Sullivan were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy with Pastor Jeff Stahl officiating. Interment was in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
He died at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, May 25, 2003 in the Illinois Masonic Home hospital.
Mr. Grindley was born Aug. 9, 1911 on a farm in Champaign County, the son of Albert Richard “Bert” and Pearl Laymon Grindley. After attending refrigeration trade school in Chicago, he volunteered for the Navy Sea Bees during World War II serving in the South Pacific in CBMU #565 as a refrigeration technician. After the war, he continued in the refrigeration field as a refrigeration mechanic in his own business, then for the University of Illinois. He opened the General Refrigeration Co., a refrigeration and air conditioning wholesale business in Lafayette, Ind. and in Danville, Ill. He then managed the Duncan Supply Co. in Champaign beginning in 1962, retiring in 1973.
He was an active Mason for more than half a century. A 52-year member of Urbana Lodge #157, he served as worshipful master in 1965. He was also a past master of Centennial Lodge #747 and an honorary member of Western Star Lodge #240 in Champaign, Rantoul Lodge #470 of Rantoul and Olive Branch Lodge #38 in Danville.
He was a member of Hope Chapter #104, OES of Urbana, the York Rite Bodies of Champaign/Urbana and Ansar Shrine AAONMS of Springfield. An active member of the Valley of Danville, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Mr. Grindley was sovereign prince of the Walter A. Stevens Council Princes of Jerusalem in 1977. He was in charge of the reunion candidates for many years and in 2000 was honored by having the reunion class named in his honor. Mr. Grindley received the highest degree in Scottish Rite Masonry when in 1975 he received his 33rd degree.
Mr. Grindley served the Grand Lodge of Illinois as a district deputy grand master, area coordinator, grand steward, certified lodge instructor and grand representative of Texas. He also served on several grand lodge committees.
He and his wife and sole mate of 63 years, moved from Champaign to the Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan in 1997. A lifelong member of the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church in Hensley Township in Champaign County, he was also a member of the American Legion Post #24 in Champaign. He married Dorothy Datisman March 30, 1940 in Chicago, and she survives.
He also leaves behind a son, Glen Richard “Rick” Grindley and his wife Linnea of Ft. Worth, Texas; grandsons and Eagle scouts, Karl Grindley of Boston, Mass. and Keith Grindley of Ft. Worth, Texas; many nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews and a treasure trove of friends.
Memorials to the donor’s choice are suggested.
Henrietta Grubbs
Mrs. Albert (Henrietta P. Wiley) Grubbs, 85, of Sullivan died at 10:07 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Christian Fellowship Church of God in Sullivan with visitation two hours before the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany with the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Grubbs was born Jan. 20, 1918 in Moweaqua, the daughter of Wilson and Mabel Roby Wiley. Henrietta was a homemaker, a foster grandmother, a cosmetologist for 28 years at the Illinois Masonic Home and was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church of God and Rhoda Rebekah Lodge #167. She married Albert R. Grubbs Nov. 12, 1937 in Indianapolis, Ind., and he preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1985.
Surviving are her sons, Ronald (Rita) Grubbs of Redwood City, Cal. and Jerry (Pat) Grubbs of Crescent Springs, Ky.; daughter, Diane Grubbs of Sullivan; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Beverly Morrison, and a great-granddaughter, Stephene Cripe.
Memorials are suggested to the Moultrie County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Edna Huckstep
Mrs. George (Edna L. Green) Huckstep, 89, of Decatur passed away at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in the McKinley Court Nursing Home in Decatur.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2003 in the Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur, conducted by Pastor Jan Hayes. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Edna was born May 13, 1914 in Moultrie County, a daughter of John Lee and Della Esther Green. She was married to George Eli Huckstep Oct. 4, 1954, and he preceded her in death April 20, 1997.
She is survived by sons, Harold Brightman of Decatur, James Brightman (Ferral) of Tulsa, Okla., Charles Brightman of Greenup, George Huckstep and Bill Huckstep, both of Decatur, and Keith Huckstep (Susan); stepsons, Gene Huckstep (Beverly) and Larry Huckstep, both of Rantoul, and Richard Huckstep (Bernita) of Sullivan; daughters, Margaret Boone and Linda Huckstep, both of Decatur; brother, Edgar green (Jewel) of Harrodsburg, Ky.; 40 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Brenda Huckstep, two grandchildren, one great-grandson, two brothers, two sisters and her faithful companion, Brutus.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Decatur Memorial Hospital Home Health Center.
