Mrs. Robert Duncan
Mrs. Robert (Dorothy L. Cole) Duncan, 85, of rural Sullivan died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003 in her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church in rural Sullivan with Pastor Kent Conover and Chaplin Tony Crouch officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cooks Mills.
Mrs. Duncan was born March 4, 1918 in Cooks Mills, the daughter of William E. and Mable Turner Cole. Dorothy was a homemaker, helped on the family farm and was a seamstress at Mattoon Garment. She was a member of the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church and Missionary Society and played the piano there for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Sullivan Senior Center, TOPS at Humboldt and the Senior Citizens Club in Humboldt. Dorothy married Robert F. Duncan Aug. 8, 1934 in Mattoon, and he survives.
Other survivors include her sons, Fred Duncan of Neoga and Dean Duncan of Mattoon; daughters, Shirley Arlene Jeffers of Rochester, Linda Jo Miller of Arcola, Rebecca Gail Duncan of Lawton, Okla. and Deborah Dale Wardlow of Amarillo, Texas; sisters, Mariam Blanche Buser of Sullivan and Wilma Florence Davis of Mattoon; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Memorials are suggested to the Dynamic Home Care and Hospice or the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church.

Shirley Frost
Mrs. Carl (Shirley Jean Fair) Frost, 62, of Lovington died at 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003 in her home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Lovington with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Shirley was born Aug. 18, 1940 in Lovington, the daughter of Homer H. and Maude E. Rhodes Fair. She married Carl E. Frost Aug. 22, 1958 in Pine Bluff, Ark., and he preceded her in death July 10, 2002.
She is survived by her daughter Debra A. Riley and husband Robert of Lovington; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jesse and Amber Riley of Lovington; brothers, Howard Lavon Fair and Leroy Fair, both of Lovington; and sister, Jane Frederick of Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lonnie Fair.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Cancer Care Specialists Charitable Fund or a church of the donor’s choice.

Gilbert Phelps
Gilbert Roscoe Phelps, 58, of Bethany died at 10:14 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2003 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Bethany with visitation from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany.
Mr. Phelps was born April 21, 1945 in Lovington, the son of Roscoe and Eva Fern Wood Phelps. He graduated from Lovington High School and Decatur Area Vocational School. He was a member of the Abundant Life Assembly of God in Bethany. He married Deborah Lee Vanatta July 12, 1969 in Bethany.
A polio survivor, he worked at Quick Plastics in Sullivan for ten years until the plant closed. While working he attended Lake Land College before becoming an employee of Ring Container Technologies in Decatur. He retired in April from Ring Container Technologies after 21 years of service.
Surviving are his mother of Sullivan; his wife of Bethany; daughter, Leslie McReynolds and husband Adam of Bethany; sisters, Nancy Hutchcraft of Sullivan, Peggy Shaffer of Arcola and Dawn Jones of Sullivan; brothers, Robert Phelps, Keith Phelps and Kurt Phelps, all of Sullivan, and David Phelps of Arthur; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Gary.
Memorials to the Abundant Life Assembly of God in Bethany are suggested.

Walter Rahn
Services for Walter John Rahn, 83, of Tuscola were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tuscola. Burial was in the Lewis Cemetery in Tuscola with arrangements by the Hilligoss-Shrader Funeral Home in Tuscola.
Born July 23, 1919 in Tuscola, he was the son of Ralph and Emma Vollmer Rahn. He was a lifelong resident of Tuscola and a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he sang for many years in the choir. He was active in the church Men’s Club and served as Sunday school superintendent. He retired from farming and from Illini FS of Tuscola after 27 years of service, where he delivered fuel to farmers and later worked in the garden center. He married Norma Eileen Riedel March 7, 1952 in Tuscola, and she survives.
Other survivors include sons, Arthur John Rahn of Tuscola and David Mark Rahn of Villa Grove; daughters, Mrs. Tuck (Paula Kay) Bowles of Lovington, Catherine Hope Rahn of Monticello, Mrs. Jeff (Karla Sue) Wright of Bement and Mrs. Homer (Emma Louise) Rahn-Lopez of Dorchester, Mass.; sisters, Alberta Dallas of Tuscola and Opal Reifsteck of Tolono; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Memorials to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund are suggested.

‘Butch’ Sanders
Services for Melvin L. “Butch” Sanders, 56, of Sullivan were held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes in Decatur. Burial was in Macon County Memorial Park in Harristown.
He died Sunday, May 25, 2003.
Born June 10, 1946 in Pana, he was the son of Herman and Lenora Beck Sanders. He worked as a laborer at Local 159.
Survivors include his mother, Lenora Sefried of Sullivan; daughters, Mrs. Nyle (Melinda) Ginger and Brigitte Hill, both of Decatur, and Barbie Lynn Sanders of Phoenix, Ariz.; sons, Joseph Samuel Sanders of Chicago and Johnny Ray Sanders of Florida; sisters, Patricia Buchen and Pam Baskette, both of Sullivan; brother, Tim Sanders of Decatur; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, stepfather and one brother.

Lorraine Friesner
Graveside services for Mrs. “Curly” (Lorraine B. Phelps) Friesner, 89, of Pilot Point, Texas were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington with the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Lovington in charge of arrangements.
The former Lovington resident died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003 in the Pilot Point Care Center in Pilot Point.
She was born Feb. 18, 1914, the daughter of Roscoe and Naomi Halderman Phelps. She married Othel B. “Curly” Friesner Feb. 14, 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1990.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Carlson of Canal Winchester, Ohio and Dolores Woodard and her husband Glenn of Frisco, Texas; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Memorials to the American Hospice, 3124 S. East Loop #20, Ft. Worth, Texas 76140 are suggested.

Harold Fread
Graveside services for Harold Sherman Fread, 93, of Lovington were held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington with the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Lovington in charge of arrangements.
He died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003 in his home.
Born Jan. 18, 1910 in Lovington, he was the son of Sherman and Nancy Dixon Fread. He was a retired farmer and security guard with Pinkerton’s. He married Margaret E. Dyer in 1936, and she preceded him in death July 27, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Danny L. Fread of Westminster, Md.; sister, Lera Poisel of Sullivan; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
One brother and four sisters preceded him in death.

Dennis Haney
Services for Dennis Scott Haney, 66, of Cooks Mills were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Shrader Funeral Home in Arcola. Burial was in the Humboldt Cemetery.
He died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003 in his home.
Born April 13, 1937 in Tuscola, he was a son of James and Sybil Baker Haney. He graduated from Arthur High School in 1955 and from the University of Illinois Air Institute in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1960. He farmed and was named Mattoon Jaycee Outstanding Young Farmer in 1973 and was also named Arthur Assn. of Commerce Outstanding Farmer in 1991. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cooks Mills where he served as a deacon, treasurer for 30 years, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He was a board member of the Coles-Moultrie Electric Coop, a member of the Coles County Farm Bureau and served on the North Okaw Twp. board. He also helped found the Cooks Mills Fire Dept. He married Clara Rose Young Aug. 3, 1957, and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Dee) Stanford of Mattoon and Mrs. Don (Sharon) Martz of Quincy; son, John Haney of Humboldt; and five grandchildren.
One sister preceded him in death.
Memorials to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church are suggested.
