Carmen Maxedon
A memorial Mass for Carmen Maxedon, 69, of Varna was held at 10 a.m. April 14 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Spring Valley. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Webster Park with the Burgess Funeral Home in LaSalle in charge of arrangements.
She died at 11:41 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003 in St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.
Born June 10, 1933 in New York City, she was the daughter of Jorge and Carmen Zapater Negron. She was self-employed in animal control for many years and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Welcoming Committee at Lake Wildwood, past member of the CWV Auxiliary and past member of the LaSalle Woman’s Club. She married Leslie “Gene” Maxedon Oct. 9, 1954 in Puerto Rico, and he survives.
Other survivors include sons, John Maxedon of Peotone and George Maxedon of Henry; daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Karen) Pearson of Spring Valley; brothers, Jose Negron of North Carolina and Jorge Negron and Michael Negron, both of Puerto Rico; and ten grandchildren.
Memorials to the Diabetes Foundation are suggested.
M.K. Aschermann
Mary Katherine Aschermann went to be with her heavenly Father at 7:30 a.m. March 11, 2003 in Houston, Texas.
She was the daughter of Herschel and Ferne Reedy of Sullivan and the sister of James Reedy of Bethany. Her parents, brother Robert and husband Leonard preceded her in death.
She married Leonard Aschermann in 1945 and raised their three children in Bethany. Children are Larry Aschermann of Carthage, Mo., Doug Aschermann of Nashville, Ill. and Debra Pickett of Houston, Texas. They had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, the youngest being her namesake, Mary Catherine Young, born Thanksgiving Day 2002.
During her retirement years she enjoyed painting porcelain dolls and showing draft ponies with her husband, Leonard. She took great comfort with her church activities and her relationship with the Lord. She was a member of the Lovington First Christian Church.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Ruth Davis
Mrs. Everett (Ruth E. Cripe) Davis, 94, of Lovington died at 5:20 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 in her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the La Place Church of the Brethren with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service in the church. Burial will be in the La Place Cemetery with the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Davis was born July 12, 1908 in La Place, the daughter of George W. and Emma Wagner Cripe. Ruth was an elementary school teacher for 26 years in Moultrie and Piatt Counties and was a member of the La Place Church of the Brethren. She married Everett Davis May 1, 1937 in Moultrie County, and he preceded her in death Sept. 6. 1979.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jo Phelps and her husband, Harold, of Lovington; son, Rick Davis and his wife, Louise, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; grandchildren, Tim Phelps and his wife, Terry, of North Aurora, Troy Phelps and his wife, Leada, of Nashville, Ind., Tisha Davis Royal and her husband, Darren, Tami Davis and Todd Davis, all of Louisville, Ky.; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Don Cripe of Lake City.
Memorials are suggested to the La Place Church of the Brethren.
R. Kenneth Furry
R. Kenneth Furry, 85, of rural Sullivan passed away at 5:10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 in his residence.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon with Elder Jeff Elkin officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Kenneth was born Oct. 19, 1917 in Coles County, a son of William Edward and Sarah Alice Berry Furry. Mr. Furry was a graduate of Mattoon High School and Graduate #309 of Cat Tractor School in Peoria in January 1940. He was owner and operator of C & F Machine Works in Mattoon for 30 years. Kenneth was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mattoon. He married Pauline Helen Whetsell Jan. 11, 1936.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Pauline Furry of rural Sullivan; one son, R. Mike Furry and wife, Donna, of Deming, N.Mex.; three daughters, Hope Furry Stiles and Helen Truth “Trudy” Whitley both of rural Sullivan and Betty Patton Lovato of Veguita, N. Mex.; grandchildren Kenna Ray Montano of Atascadero, Cal., Wiliam Patton of Taylorville, James Patton of Belen, New Mex., Karen Drake of Louisville, Ky. and Kenneth “Chuck” Whitley of Tucson, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Eula Kenney
Graveside services for Mrs. Henry (Eula Ann Redman) Kenney, 93, of Salem Village, Joliet were held at noon Thursday, March 27 in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan. As it was Eula’s final wish, cremation rites were accorded. The Fred C. Dames Funeral Home in Joliet was in charge of arrangements.
She passed away Friday, March 21, 2003.
Born March 5, 1910 in Lovington, she was a daughter of Thomas and Elania Probst Redman. She had been a Joliet resident since 1998.
Survivors include her children, Robert Kenney of Decatur, Mrs. William (Doris) Sharpe of Joliet; grandchildren, Mrs. Robert (Cynthia) Hauck of Bethany and Mrs. Steven (Janice) Wright, Sandra Stout, Mrs. Dale (Sharon) Tennyson, all of Decatur, Gregory Sharpe of New Lenox and Eric Sharpe of Long Beach, Cal.; great-grandchildren, Robert Hauck Jr. of Milton, N.H., Nathanial Hauck Sr. of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Michael Hauck of Shepard Air Force Base, Texas, Brian Wright, Joshua Wright, Tanya Stout, Jennifer Stout, Mellisa Stout, Melany Stout, Jeremy Tennyson and Dale Tennyson Jr., all of Decatur; great-great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Hauck Jr. and Jayla Tennyson; step great-great-grandchild, Katherine Smith; sisters, Mary Lou Flennikin of Bement and Betty Kenzil of Monticello; brothers, Gerald Redman of Macomb, Dale Redman of Lovington, Harold Redman of Atwood and Wayne and Lowell Redman, both of Bement; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry S. Kenney in 1967, grandsons, Stewart Kenney and Jeffrey Sharpe, great-grandson, Daryl Wright, parents, one sister and two brothers.

Edythe Bayless
Graveside services for Mrs. Bennie (Edythe M. Dennis) Bayless, 91, of Burbank, Cal. were held at 9 a.m. March 14, 2003 in the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Hollywood Hills, Cal.
The former Mt. Zion resident died at 8:50 a.m. March 11, 2003 in the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.
Born Dec. 12, 1911 in Mt. Zion, she was the daughter of William and Minnie Dennis of Dalton City. She graduated from Mt. Zion Community High School in 1930, attended Browns Business College, worked for A.E. Staley Mfg. Co. and the Farm Bureau, both in Decatur, and was a member of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. She moved to Burbank in 1941 and worked for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II. She was a medical director for the Dept. of Pathology at USC School of Medicine in Los Angeles, Cal., retiring Dec. 1, 1976. She married Bennie F. Bayless June 4, 1944, and he died Sept. 1, 1989.
Survivors include sons, Bernard F. Bayless of North Hills, Cal. and Ronald F. Bayless of Frazier Park, Cal.; brother, Joseph Russell Dennis of Dalton City; sisters, Edna Dennis Smith of Normal, Dorothy Dennis Rutherford of Rochester and Erma Dennis of Burbank; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Helen Beal
Services for Mrs. Morton (Helen Louise Cross) Beals, 76, of rural Gays were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon. Burial was in the Beals Cemetery east of Trilla.
She died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in her home.
Born March 10, 1927 in Gays, she was a daughter of Harry W. and Doris Smith Cross. She was a homemaker and member of the Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose. She married Morton Lynn Beals May 27, 1946, and he died Dec. 8, 1987.
She is survived by a brother, Harold Cross of rural Gays.
Four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
‘Yukor’ Jurgens
Services for Eugene E. “Yukor” Jurgens, 79, of Arthur were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Zion United Church of Christ in rural Arthur. Burial was in the Mackville Cemetery in Atwood with arrangements by the Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola.
He died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2003 in his home.
Born March 15, 1924 in Douglas County, he was the son of Claus and Eva Hall Jurgens. A 1942 graduate of Atwood High School, he was a lifelong farmer. He married Dorothy Maxine Scheffer April 23, 1944 in the Zion United Church of Christ, and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Michael Jurgens of Chatham; daughters, Mrs. Danny (Gaye) Powell of Arthur and Mrs. Terry (Kelli) Barnett of Rockford; brother, Melvin Jurgens of Grand Junction, Col.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
One brother preceded him in death.
