Sidney Long
Services for Sidney L. Long, 86, of Lovington were held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the United Methodist Church in Lovington with the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Lovington in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington with military rites.
He passed away at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003.
Sidney was born Dec. 26, 1916 in Christian County, the son of S.E. and Maye B. Stevens Long. He was a veteran of World War II who served with the 814th Combat Military Police as a staff sergeant. He also served in the South Pacific, earning three bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Star and Ribbon, the Asian Pacific Medal and seven overseas bars while serving a total of 43 months in combat. He was a retired farmer and softball and baseball umpire. He was a retired member of ASA and IHSA and was a member of American Legion Post #429 and the VFW. He was also a master gardener. He married Evelyn J. Foster Oct. 29, 1947, and she survives.
Other survivors include sons, Sheldon M. Long and wife Melanie of Decatur and Chris S. Long and wife Sheryl of Sigel; daughter, Cathy J. Long and fiancé, Ron Lee of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Carrie Long-Pierson, Blaine Long and Holly Long and Abbie, Baylie, Caleb and Demmie Long; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Pierson and Sydney Long-Mendenall; and one brother, Lloyd Long of Lovington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Memorials to the Lovington United Methodist Church or Hospice-Lincolnland are suggested.
Helen Beals
Helen Beals of Gays died Tuesday, March 25, 2003.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon.
Mary Rogers
Mary I. Rogers, 69, of Mattoon died at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003 in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Coles County.
Her body was donated to medical science, and a memorial service was to be determined by the family at a later date. The Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon was in charge of arrangements.
Born June 22, 1933 in Sullivan, she was a daughter of Ray and Effie Hopkins Millsap. She was a member of the New Life Tabernacle of Sullivan and was employed as a cook and health care giver for many years in Mattoon. She was also a cook for Knowles Cafeteria in Mattoon.
Survivors include sons, Danny Rogers of Mattoon, Tommy Rogers of Cocoa, Fla., Dale Rogers of Mattoon and William Rogers of Sullivan; daughter, Mrs. Jeffery (Kelly) Rogers of Lerna; two brothers; two sisters; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Memorials are suggested to the New Life Tabernacle in Sullivan.
Robert Schowalter
An informal gathering of the family and friends of Robert J. Schowalter, 75, of Decatur was held Monday in the Main Hangar of the Decatur Airport with the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes in charge of arrangements.
He died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2003.
Born April 20, 1927 in Keokuk, Iowa, he was the son of Ralph A. and Clara Klepfer Schowalter. He retired in 1992 as director of the Decatur Airport. He married Janice Kiner Jan. 16, 1960 in Kansas City, Mo., and she survives.
Other survivors include his children Mrs. Lynn (Mary Clair) Roney of Franklin, Tenn., Michael Schowalter of Bethany and Joseph Schowalter of Kearney, Mo., and five grandchildren.
Two brothers preceded him in death.
Dan Smith
Dan L. Smith, 78, of Greencastle, Ind. died Tuesday morning in the Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday in the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle with visitation from 4 p.m. until time of service.
Born Nov. 23, 1924 in Metropolis, he was the son of Buren Huff and Elizabeth Casey Smith. A graduate of Sullivan Township High School in the class of 1942, he earned a bachelor of arts degree from Wabash College in 1950 and a master of library science and C.A.S. from the University of Illinois. He had taught school in New Castle, Ind. and in Mattoon until 1962 when he became the assistant director of libraries at Depauw University, retiring in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army with the 321st Battalion in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He married Marjorie Goetz in 1951, and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Candace) Walker and Cynthia Smith, both of Indianapolis, Ind., and Cheryl Smith of South Bend, Ind.; son, Andrew Walker Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; and three grandchildren.
One brother preceded him in death.

Lillian Kick
Lillian I. Kick, 96, of Sullivan died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2003 in the Sullivan Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. Garry Gromley officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Memorials are suggested to the Sullivan First United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund. According to her wishes, Lillian will be cremated.
Lillian was born Nov. 7, 1906 in Perry County, Illinois, the daughter of William M. and Mary Heising Kick. She was a retired school teacher, loved children, flowers, enjoyed traveling and did volunteer work, was a member of the Sullivan First United Methodist Church, National Education Assn., Illinois Retired Teachers Assn. and Moultrie County Home Extension.
Surviving are special friends, Rosemary Wood of Sullivan and Donna Bogert of Monmouth.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Rose Mary Cheviron
Funeral Mass for Mrs. Louis (Rose Mary Marchisello) Cheviron, 88, of Decatur was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Decatur. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Decatur with arrangements by the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes in Decatur.
She died 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2003 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 17, 1915 in Decatur, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Philomenia Curci Marchisello. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, CD of A and Sons of Italy. She was in the first graduating class of St. Teresa High School in 1933. She married Louis A. Cheviron Dec. 31, 1936 in Decatur, and he died Dec. 24, 1978.
Survivors include her children, Rita Willems of Huntington, Ind., Mrs. Jim (Lois) Wildman of Bement, Mrs. Richard (Michele) Lamb of Dalton City, Mark Cheviron of Decatur and Mrs. Craig Catney of Zionsville, Ind.; brothers and sisters, Herman Marchisello of Venice, Fla. Helen DePalma of Falls Church, Va. and Betty Schlarb of Lexington, Ky.; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
One daughter, two great-granddaughters, one sister and three brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. John Oary
Services for Mrs. John (Betty F. Keppler) Oary, 65, of Decatur were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home. Burial was in the Harristown Cemetery in Harristown.
She died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2003 in her home.
Born Nov. 10, 1937 in Vandalia, she was the daughter of Kenneth Sr. and Thelma Keppler. She was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and was employed by General Electric Co. until its closing. She retired from the Ring Can Corp. in January 2000. She married John C. Oary Jan. 2, 1954, and he survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Mrs. Allen (Carla) Hunt of Dalton City and Mrs. Derrick (Shelley) Miller of Richton Park; sisters, Mrs. Frank (Norma) Stinebring and Helen Keppler, both of Decatur, Mrs. Lester (Juanita) Mussan of Shelbyville, Mrs. Floyd (Joann) Hopkins of Ramsey; brothers, Joe Keppler of Vandalia, Billy Keppler of Decatur and Tom Keppler, Kenny Keppler and Charles Keppler, all of Warrensburg; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
One son, one sister and three brothers preceded her in death.
