Dorothy Lear
Dorothy Jean Lear, 80, of Sullivan died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday in her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan.
She was born June 7, 1920 in Moultrie County, the daughter of Charles W. and Susie A. Montgomery Webb. She was retired from the Brown Shoe Co., was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sullivan, R.S.V.P. in Sullivan and Moultrie County Senior Citizens.
Surviving are sons, Robert K. Elkin and wife Sandra of Yuma, Ariz., John P. Elkin and wife Cathy of Sullivan and William D. Elkin and wife Mickey of Sutter, IL; daughters, Patsy E. Shull and husband Dwane of Lakeside, Cal., Linda S. Ryan of Orlando, Fla. and Pamela A. Farber and husband Ron of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Mable Standerfer of Sullivan, Jane Colclasure of Iola and Ruth Godwin of Ramsey; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
Memorials are suggested to the Moultrie County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Sadoris Selock
Services for Mrs. Thomas (Sadoris Mae Hendrickson) Selock, 77, of Madison, Ind. were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Lovington. Burial was in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington.
The former Lovington resident died at 2 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison, Ind.
She was born July 28, 1923 in Arthur, the daughter of George L. and Hallie Powell Hendrickson. She worked for several years as a bookkeeper for the Lovington School System. She had lived in Madison for 24 years, working as a social and activities director for ten years at the Clifty Falls Convalescent Center. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969, the Women of the Moose and the First Christian Church in Lovington. She married Thomas L. Selock Nov. 3, 1947, and they shared 52 happy years together. He preceded her in death March 1, 2000.
Surviving are one son, David Selock and wife Donna of Madison, Ind.; one granddaughter, Amy Jarvis of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Alicia and Amber Jarvis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Florence Bankson
Mrs. William (Florence P. McCord) Bankson, 97, of Decatur died at 5:43 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 in Manor Care Health Services in Decatur.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Brintlinger’s Funeral Home in Decatur with visitation one hour before the funeral. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany.
Born June 30, 1903 in Bethany, she was the daughter of James Arthur and Cora Jackson McCord. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an active member in the Fellowship Forum Sunday school class and UMW Circle 4. She taught school in Moultrie County prior to her marriage. She was a 4-H leader for 19 years and a member of Hickory Point Extension for 55 years. She married William Bankson Dec. 1, 1923 in Springfield, and he died Oct. 21, 1993.
Survivors include sons, Hubert Bankson of Warrensburg and Jack Bankson of Decatur; sister, Ethel Schad of Bloomington; brother, Robert P. McCord of Decatur; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
One brother and one sister preceded her in death.
The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church.
Dawn Bell
Dawn Jonette Bell, 45, of Decatur died at 7:43 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
A funeral Mass for the former Cerro Gordo resident will be held at noon Thursday in St. James Catholic Church with visitation from 6 to 8 tonight (Wednesday) in Brintlinger’s Funeral Home in Decatur. Burial will be in the Cerro Gordo Cemetery.
Born Nov. 22, 1955 in Decatur, she was a daughter of Richard Wayne and Jacqueline Boline Bell. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a 45-year member of Cerro Gordo American Legion Auxiliary #117. She worked at Kemper Insurance for 22 years and became a fashion consultant for Bachrach, Inc.
Survivors include her mother of Decatur; brothers, William A. Bell of Cerro Gordo, Rodney D. Boline of Maroa, Jonathan W. Bell of Sullivan and Dale A. Bell of Biloxi, Miss.
Memorials are suggested to St. James Catholic Church or to the donor’s choice.
Charles Furr
Services for Charles F. Furr, 87, of Shelbyville were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Howe & Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville.
He died at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 in Shelby Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1913 in Rose Township in Shelby County, he was the son of Oscar and Mattie Hayward Furr. He was a retired farmer and a 1932 graduate of Shelbyville High School. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Shelbyville. He married Faye Dell Edwards Nov. 17, 1935, and she died March 29, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Furr of Shelbyville; daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Joyce) Largent of Bethany; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
Two sisters and one great-grandson preceded him in death.
George Hower
Services for George William Hower, 82, of Salem were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 7 in the Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem. Burial was in the Paradise Cemetery in Salem.
The former Bethany resident died at 2:20 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 in the Twin Willows Nursing Home in Salem.
Born Aug. 18, 1918 in Enterprise, he was a son of George and Effie Grinestaff Hower. He retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Decatur after 25 years of service. He attended the Grace Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Salem Hospital Auxiliary. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II, entering the military April 17, 1941 and was discharged Nov. 22, 1945. He married Geraldine Dugan Dec. 5, 1953 in Centralia, and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Thomas Hower of Bluford; brothers, John Hower of Salem and Nolan Hower of Sullivan; sister, Dorothy Decker of Salem; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Grace Church of the Nazarene.
‘Bob’ Hughes
Services for Robert E. "Bob" Hughes, 74, of Sullivan were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan.
He died at 12:48 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Born March 2, 1926 in Moultrie County, he was a son of Leland and Mary Etta Kidwell Hughes. He retired from the maintenance department of Quantum in Tuscola in 1989, was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #399 in Urbana and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Joan Matheson Dec. 31, 1947 in Morganfield, Ky., and she survives.
Other survivors include sons, Bill Hughes and Jim Hughes, both of Sullivan, and Arthur Hughes of San Antonio, Texas; daughters, Luella Hughes of Sullivan and Barbara Hughes of Mattoon; sisters, Maxine Eaton of Sullivan and Mildred Isley of Elizabethtown, Col.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Mary Phelps
Services for Mrs. Delmar (Mary Woolridge) Phelps, 82, of Lovington were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington.
She died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 in the Moweaqua Nursing Home.
Born March 27, 1918 in Edgewood, she was a daughter of John W. and Lizzie Jones Woolridge. She had worked at Brown Shoe and Switchcraft in Sullivan and was a member of the Lovington First Baptist Church. She married Delmar W. Phelps March 27, 1936 in Sullivan, and he died Feb. 10, 1980.
Survivors include sons, Harold E. Phelps of Lovington and Jerry W. Phelps of Taylorville; brother, Frank Woolridge of Colorado Springs, Col.; sisters, Ruth Coy of Lewiston, Idaho and Ina Plummer of Montrose; ten grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
