Lowell Ritter
Lowell P. Ritter, 82, of Sullivan died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001 in his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon with visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be in the Dodge Grove Cemetery with Schilling Funeral Home, Ltd. in Mattoon in charge of arrangements.
Born Sept. 29, 1918 in Shelbyville, he was a son of William "Bill" and Maude Hudson Ritter. He was a retired grain farmer. He married Opal Aleshire Dec. 18, 1938 in Mattoon, and she survives.
Other survivors include two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
One daughter, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorials to the Broadway Christian Church or to St. John’s Hospice.
Lula May Shipman
Services for Mrs. "Jack" (Lula May Pesch) Shipman, 88, of Bethany were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Rodney Harris officiating. Burial was in the Marrowbone Township Cemetery in Bethany.
She died at 3:32 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 in the Sullivan Health Care Center.
Lula May was born March 23, 1913 in Bethany, the daughter of Nelson and Pearl Bentz Pesch. She was a member of the Bethany Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, was a Bethany School Dist. bus driver for 33 years and was a 4-H leader for Marrowbone Merry Makers. She married W.T. "Jack" Shipman May 16, 1932 in Bethany, and he preceded her in death Dec. 6, 1981.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Walter (Joyce) Jenkins of Bethany; grandchildren, Ron Jenkins and his wife Jane, Duane Jenkins and his wife Tami, and Stan Jenkins, all of Sullivan, and Diane Doyle and her husband Jim of Oakville, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Sean Jenkins of Tuscola and Dustin Jenkins, Danielle Jenkins, Corey Jenkins, Alex Jenkins and Jenna Jenkins, all of Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one grandson.
Memorials are suggested to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church or to the donor’s choice.
Furdie Burks
Services for Furdie J. Burks, 99, of Shelbyville were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Lockart & Sons Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Burial was in the Spangler Cemetery.
He died at 8:41 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 in Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville.
Born June 20, 1902 in Moultrie County, he was the son of James Henry and Nora Ellen Fleshner Burks. He was a retired painter. He married Annabelle Weger, Blanche Rickey Wisley and Esther Sorrell, and they all preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, William Eugene Burks of Harristown and Donald Dwight Burks of Beecher City; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Four brothers, three sisters, two grandchildren and one great-great grandchild preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorials to the Church of Christ in Findlay.
‘Cookie’ Cook
Services for Raymond Huxley "Cookie" Cook, 72, of Gays were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon. Burial was in the Dodge Grove Cemetery.
He died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Coles County.
Born Oct. 24, 1929 in Kemp, he was a son of Theodore and Mary Ann Denny Rogers Cook. He was a member of the Marshall Avenue Christian Church and was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He was employed for 12 years with the Mattoon School System and for 18 years as a park superintendent for the city of Mattoon. He married Nan Louise Sewell Dec. 1, 1951 in Mattoon, and she died Dec. 19, 1980.
Survivors include sons, Steven Lee Cook and Kenny Cook, both of Mattoon; daughters, Mrs. Keith (JoEllen) Young of Gays and Kay Lynn Lanter of Bloomington; brother, LeRoy Cook of St. Cloud, Fla.; sister, Betty Hunt of Intercession City, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
One brother preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorials to the Marshall Avenue Christian Church Building Fund or the Mattoon Junior Football League.
Rachel Feldman
Mrs. Chester (Rachel I. Jennings) Feldman, 86, of Decatur died at 8:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 in the Fair Havens Christian Home.
Graveside services for the former West Salem resident will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Moravian Cemetery in West Salem with the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes in charge of arrangements.
Born Sept. 12, 1915 in West Salem, she was the daughter of George Washington and Eliza Ellen Nading Jennings. She was a member of the First Christian Church in West Salem and worked as a custodian in the West Salem schools. She married Chester Herbert Feldman Jan. 20, 1934 in West Salem, and he died in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Larry (Mary Ellen) Staley of Boody; son, Jack Paul Feldman of Lovington; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
One son, one great-grandchild, two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.
William Mallernee
Graveside services for William Vincent Mallernee, 81, of Raeford, N.C. were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Spring Lake with the Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake in charge of arrangements.
He died of cardiac arrest Saturday, Nov. 4, 2001.
He was the son of John Franklin and Lusta Mae Smith Mallernee. He was a graduate of Lovington High School after which he entered the CCCs and then served for more than 20 years in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He married Virginia Lee Mapes Nov. 1, 1944 in Sheffield, Ala., and she died Oct. 31, 1978. He then married Alma Capps, and she survives.
Other survivors include four children, John Robert of Blackfoot, Idaho, Ellen Suzanne Serig of Misfield, Va, Mary Carolyn Franklin of Raeford, N.C. and Catherine Grace Palmer of Zebulin, N.C.; brothers, Noah of New Mexico and Dallas of California; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Two children, five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Patsy Paulson
Services for Mrs. Virgil (Patsy Ann Broyles) Paulson, 71, of Windsor were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Loving-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor. Burial was in the Ash Grove Cemetery near Windsor.
She died at 5:35 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Coles County.
Born June 18, 1930 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Carl and Daisy Fleming Broyles. She was a member of the Christian Church in Effingham and attended the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon. She married Virgil Paulson Sept. 23, 1948 in Shelby County, and he survives.
Other survivors include a son, David Michael Paulson of Gays; daughter, Brenda Kay Risley of Arthur; sister, Linda Johnson of Shelbyville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Windsor Peace Meal or the Sarah Bush Lincoln Lifeline.
Milon Reed
Milon Reed, 82, of Arthur died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the First Apostolic Church of Arthur with visitation from 6 to 8 tonight (Wednesday) in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
Born Jan. 29, 1919 in Thompkinsville, Ky, she was the daughter of Arvie and Flossie England Bushong. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Apostolic Church of Arthur. She married Claude J. Reed June 10, 1940 in Clayton, Mo., and he died Oct. 5, 1991.
Survivors include sons, James Kenneth Reed of the Fiji Islands and Gary Claude Reed of Amman, Jordan; daughters, Sharon White and Yvonne Bevis, both of Arthur; sister, Shirley Engquist of Janesville, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Two sisters preceded her in death.
Memorials are suggested to the First Apostolic Church of Arthur or for traveling expenses for her missionary sons to attend the services.
