‘Sam’ Luthy
Private family services for George Samuel "Sam" Luthy, 84, of Versailles were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling. Burial was in the Ripley Cemetery with military rites.
The former Cerro Gordo resident died at 8:35 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2002 in the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mt. Sterling.
Born Dec. 19, 1917 in Schuyler County, he was the son of Clarence Robert and Ethel Hetrick Luthy. He attended the Brown County schools and was a member of Hardin Masonic Lodge 44 AF & AM. He worked as a tinsmith for Caterpillar, Inc. in Decatur for 32 years, and he was a World War II Navy veteran, having served aboard the USS Dobbin. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He married Roberta Jane Dunavan Feb. 15, 1947 in Mt. Sterling, and she died Jan. 21, 1981. He married Gisele Argot Jan. 27, 1987 in Versailles, and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Stephan Luthy of Decatur; daughter, Mrs. Tim (Stephanie) Roberts of Lovington; stepson, Gilbert Vidrio of San Diego, Cal.; stepdaughter, Rita Vidrio of Jacksonville; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Three brothers and three susters preceded him in death.

Karen Stevens
Services for Karen Stevens, 51, of Centralia were held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem. Burial was in a Centralia Cemetery.
She died at 3:40 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2002 in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Born Dec. 26, 1950 in Decatur, she was the daughter of Floyd and Imogene Fuqua Beachy. She was the former manager of Super 8 Motels in the Salem area. She married Dennis Stevens in Bethany, and he survives.
Other survivors include a son, Derek of Centralia; mother of Mattoon; brothers, Sonny Beachy and Joe Beachy, both of Sullivan; sisters, Deanna Adams and Betty Selby, both of Sullivan; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her father.
William Tremblay
A private memorial service for Lt. William Tremblay, 81, of Protem, Mo. was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Salem Baptist Church in Theodosia, Mo. Cremation was under the direction of the Kissee Mortuary & Chapel in Forsyth, Mo.
He died March 10, 2002 in the Skaggs Community Hospital in Branson, Mo.
Born Feb. 23, 1921 in Pawtucket, R.I., he was the son of Alcime and Florence Moody Tremblay. He was a retired cryptographer in the U.S. Navy and held the rank of lieutenant. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II and held numerous honors. He married Glyndola Hutchcraft Feb. 14, 1996 in Ocie, Mo., and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, William Howard Jr. of Darwin, Australia; daughter, Sharron Schutte of Mountain Home, Ark.; stepsons, Chuck, Terry, Steve and Jeff Hutchcraft, all of Illinois; brother, Kenneth Tremblay of Connecticut; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight step grandchildren.
One son and three brothers preceded him in death.
Helen Ushman
Services for Mrs. John (Helen M. Trigg) Ushman, 80, of Springfield were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial was in the Findlay Cemetery.
She died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 in the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Born Oct. 2, 1921 in Findlay, she was the daughter of Daniel and Esther Johnson Trigg. She retired after 30 years as a candy maker at Pease’s Candy Factory. She married John J. Ushman Dec. 21, 1947 in Decatur, and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Twig (Delores "Dolly") Blair of Springfield; sons, Vernon Ushman of Monroe, Mich. and Bob Ushman of Elburn; sisters, Doris Reynolds of Carlyle and Mildred Arthur of Mattoon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
One brother preceded her in death.
Memorials are suggested to the Visiting Nurses Assn. in Springfield.
Spencer Black
Funeral services for Spencer E. Black, 81, of Gays were held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Richard Coen officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Smyser Cemetery in Gays.
He died at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
He was born Nov. 13, 1920 in Atwood, the son of Harry B. and Cuba Larimore Black. He was a farmer, member of the Smyser Christian Church in Gays, American Legion Post #68 in Sullivan and the Moultrie County Farm Bureau. He married Eloise Boyd Aug. 3, 1947 in Sullivan.
Surviving are his wife, Eloise of Gays; sons, Lynn Black of Hillsboro and Julian Black of Gays; brothers, Howard Black of Marion, Texas, Gene Black of Tulsa, Okla. and Harry O. Black of Atwood; sisters, Lois Martin of Arthur and Mary Humes of Atwood; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin; one granddaughter; and one brother, David.
Memorials are suggested to the Smyser Christian Church in Gays.
David Hostetter
David Kent Hostetter, 52, of Atlanta, Ga. died May 26, 2002 in the Well Star Community Hospice Center in Austell, Ga. after a lengthy illness.
A family inurnment will be held at a later date.
He was born June 2, 1949 in Decatur, a son of William H. Hostetter and Gertrude Monroe Hostetter. He attended Pontiac and Fairbury schools, and was graduated from the Chicago YMCA High School in 1969. He married Betty Scherr April 4, 1971, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son, Chad Alan Hostetter, of Pontiac; grandson, Zachary Alan Hostetter, of Pontiac; sister, Joan Steidinger of Fairbury; brother, Mike Hostetter of Talbott, Tenn.; niece, Cathy Hinnen; and nephews, Chris and Paul Coleman.
His parents and stepfather, Clifford Stephens, preceded him in death.
Lorene Meador
Funeral services for Lorene Meador, 87, of Sullivan were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan.
She died at 2:20 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002 in the Sullivan Health Care Center in Sullivan.
She was born Dec. 31, 1914 in Allen County, Ky., the daughter of John and Mattie Eaton Garmon. She was retired from the Brown Shoe Factory in Sullivan and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Sullivan. She married Cecil V. Meador Oct. 3, 1930 in Allen County, Ky. He preceded her in death Jan. 2, 1995.
She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Matheson and husband Don of Sullivan; grandchildren, Debra Eaton and husband Allen, Cheryl Scribner and husband Scott and Joe Matheson and wife Joan, all of Sullivan, Jim Matheson and wife Jennifer of Bethany and Bob Matheson and wife Darlene of Charleston; brother, J.V. Garmon of Lovington; sister, Nannie Mae Goad of Sullivan; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.
To know her was to love her.

Josephine Slifer
Funeral services for Mrs. Clem (Lois Josephine "Josie" Tice) Slifer, 98, of Sullivan were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002 in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. David Leslie officiating. Burial was in the Cochran Cemetery in rural Windsor.
She died at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002 in her home.
She was born Oct. 15, 1903 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory, the daughter of Tom and Elizabeth Hardy Tice. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Sullivan, Order of the Eastern Star Crystal Chapter #39, past member of the Moultrie County Home Extension, W.C.T.U. and the Bell Hopper Missionary Society. She married Clem E. Slifer Oct. 6, 1920, and he preceded her in death in 1971.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Darrel (Mildred) Davis of Sullivan; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Vail and infant Dorothy Jean; three brothers; and three sisters.
Memorials to the First Christian Church in Sullivan, the Ash Grove Christian Church in Windsor or to the donor’s choice are suggested.
