Charles Hollonbeck
Graveside services with military rites for Charles E. (Bus) Hollonbeck, 86, of Lovington, were held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan with the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan in charge of arrangements.
The former Sullivan resident died at 8:10 p.m, Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 in Sullivan Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 24, 1916 in Moultrie County, he was a son of Art and Mabel Purvis Hollonbeck. He was a member of the army during World War II and retired from Caterpillar in Decatur. He was a member of the Lovington Christian Church, American Legion Post #68 and the George A. Sentel Masonic Lodge #764, both in Sullivan. He married Dorothy H. Blackwell in 1941, and she preceded him in death in 1981. He then married Mary Cochran Carr in 1982, and she preceded him in death in 1991.
He is survivied by a son Steve Hollonbeck and his wife Cheryl of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Mary Beth Massey and husband Greg of Lovington; brother Dwight Hollonbeck of Naperville; sisters Colleen Jividen of Galena, Ruth Craig of Marrietta, Cal. and Sadie Booker of Sullivan; six grandchildren and special friend LaVerne Davis of Lovington.
Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to Sullivan Health Care Center.
Hilda Rhodes
Funeral services for Hilda Rhodes, 88, of Sullivan were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan.
She died at 4:05 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 in Eastview Terrace in Sullivan.
Born Aug. 30, 1914 in Sullivan, she was a daughter of Floyd and Olga Webb Selby. She had been office manager for Rhodes Lumber Company in Sullivan and a member of the Sullivan First Baptist Church and Moultrie County Home Extension. She married James Wiley Rhodes May 28, 1935 in Sullivan, and he preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter Janet Rhodes Hamer and her husband Edwin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; brothers Kenneth Selby of Decatur and Cecil Selby of Danville; granddaughter Dr. Erika Hamer of Atlanta, Ga. and grandson Ian Hamer of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Marilyn Selby and Ruth Selby and brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd "Ras" and Ada Selby.
Memorials are suggested to the Sullivan First Baptist Church, the Sullivan Community Education Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Assn.
Rick Allen
Services for Ricky E. "Rick"Allen, 50, of Decatur were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial was in Jonathan Creek Cemetery in Sullivan.
He died at 6:45 a.m. Sept. 21, 2002 in his sister’s home in Decatur.
Born Aug. 20, 1952 in Decatur, he was the son of Willis Eugene and Martha Ray Allen. He was a truck driver.
Surviving is his mother, Martha Allen of Findlay and sister Robin Wallace of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Irene Arthur
Services celebrating the life of G. Irene Arthur, 91 of Mattoon were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon. Burial was in French Cemetery in Allenville.
She died at 8:50 a.m. Sept. 19, 2002 in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Coles County.
Born Dec. 6, 1910 in Coles County, she was a daughter of Fred and Alberta Pearl Mayhew Block. She retired from Theodore Effrom of Chicago in 1970 and was a former member of the Eastern Star. She married Ralph Aaron Arthur June 2, 1927, and he died Dec. 15, 1981.
Survivors include sons Ralph "Cap" Arthur of Allenville and Raymond Arthur of Kenneth City, Fla.; daughters Betty Dieterich of Calumet City and Nancy Gardner of Sullivan; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, two brothers, two sisters and a great-grandson preceded her in death.
Memorial gifts to the donor’s choice in care of the Schilling Funeral Home are suggested.
Bob Brown
Bob E. Brown, 79, of rural Greenup, died at 6:25 p.m. Sept. 23, 2002 in his residence.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the New Life Apostolic Church in Charleston. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery in rural Greenup. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup.
Born July 30, 1923 in Bethany, he was a son of Homer Cecil and Della Opal Scrogins Brown. He retired in 1983 after 30 years of service from General Electric in Mattoon, was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the New Life Apostolic Church in Charleston. He married Wandalee Stewart in 1946, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son Kent A. Borwn of Mattoon; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, a brother and a sister.
Memorials to Lincolnland Hospice are suggested.
Chuck Cutler
Services for Charles E. "Chuck" Cutler, 46, of Bethany were held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home with burial in Point Pleasant Cemetery.
He died Sept. 19, 2002 in a hunting accident.
Born March 16, 1956 in Decatur he was the son of Ernest Franklin and Catherine E. Doty Cutler.
He retired from Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. as a tire builder after 26 years and was a member of the National Rifle Assn. and American Pool Players Assn.
Surviving are his mother Catherine Lacey of LaPlace; father Frank Cutler of Decatur; son Trevor Charles Franklin Cutler of Decatur and sister Cheryl Cathcart of Harristown.
Memorials to Mid-Illinois Chapter American Red Cross or National Rifle Assn. are suggested.
Gerald A. Freeman
Gerald A. Freeman, 88, of Sullivan died at 4:15 a.m. Sept. 23, 2002 in Douglas Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mattoon.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Calvert Funeral Home in Clinton with visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Masonic rites will be accorded at service time, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Clinton.
Born June 22, 1914 in Birnie, Mo., he was the son of Fred A. and Margaret May Esry Freeman. He retired after many years as a carpenter and worked as a housing inspector for the city of Peoria. He was a member of Joseph Robbins Lodge #930 A.F. & A.M. in Peoria, was a past patron of Creve Cour Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and a member of Peoria Scottish Rite and Mohammed Shrine. He had attended the University Avenue United Methodist Church in Peoria and was affiliated with the First Christian Church. He married Dorothy E. Stone Aug. 11, 1935 in Clinton, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son Richard Freeman of Rockford; daughters Mrs. Lowell (Betty) Winterland of Fairbury and Mrs. Garry (Barbara) Hayes of Washburn; sisters Doris Harris of Clinton and Mildred Mioduski of Tucson, Ariz; 15 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
A granddaughter and a step-granddaughter preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital or the Illinois Masonic Home.
Betty Gatchel
Graveside services in Cerro Gordo Cemetery were held on Monday for Betty Gatchel, 76, of Cerro Gordo. Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She died at 10:40 a.m. Sept. 21, 2002 in Sullivan Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1926, she was a daughter of August and Marie Linthicum Zientara. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She married Omer LeRoy "Curly" Gatchel May 25, 1947, and he died in 1998.
Surviving are sons Dennis and Keith Gatchel and daughter Mrs. Richard (Kathleen) Quimby; brothers Emmett Zientara and George Zientara and sister Opal Lobb; seven grandchildren and several great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Memorials may be made to the family in order to establish a one time scholarship for a deserving Cerro Gordo High School athlete.
