Clark E. Wardlow
Clark E. Wardlow, age 83, of Sycamore passed away at Kishwaukee Community Hospital on Sunday, April 22, 2001, following a short but fierce battle with cancer.
Clark was born on May 24, 1917 in Freeport, IL, the son of Victor and Mary (Whirry) Wardlow. He grew up in Monroe, WI and attended local schools. Clark put his education to work and concentrated on being a carpenter. He worked in the trades until October 15, 1940 when he went oversees to fight in WW II in the European Theatre as a demolitions specialist. Upon his honorable discharge on November 25, 1946, he returned to Monroe, continuing to work as a carpenter.
In 1945 he met a woman who became his best friend and eventually his wife. Mary Jane Sloat and Clark were united in marriage on September 6, 1946 in Waukegan, IL. They made their home in Waukegan for a time before moving back to Monroe. In the late 1940s, the family moved to Kaneville, IL, then to Elburn for a time, until 1991, when they settled down in the perfect neighborhood in Sycamore, IL.
Although Clark retired almost 20 years ago, he never retired from fun. He liked to gamble at the boat and loved being a fulltime grandfather and, eventually, a great-grandfather. He always had a treat in one of his pockets for his great-grandchildren and the secret was kept none too well as they ambushed him whenever he came to visit. He loved to fish as much as he could, though the opportunities came less often in recent years. Idle time was spent playing cards with family and friends, especially dirty rummy. Clark was a man who was easy going, though if you crossed him, he let you know he wasn't happy about it. No matter what the problem was, it never came between him and his family or friends for long.
He leaves now his five children: Victor (Betty) Wardlow of Aurora, Richard (Roberta) Wardlow of Elburn, Wanda (Dave) Berens of Maple Park, Greg (Marcia) Wardlow of DeKalb, and, Roxanne Stover of Elburn; ten grandchildren: Todd Wardlow of Aurora, Jennifer (Jim) Johnston of Aurora, Tracy Childress of Forest City, AR, Dave (Joanna) Berens and their children, Brendan and John, of DeKalb, Mike (Char) Berens and their son, Austin, of Maple Park, Angela Wardlow of DeKalb, Steven Wardlow of DeKalb, Kevin Stover of Conyer, GA, Stephanie (Kurt Kozlowski) Stover and their children, Taylor and Morgan Kozlowski, of Elburn, and, Kristie Stover of Elburn; several nieces and nephews and a family of friends.
He now joins his wife, Mary; his parents and 11 siblings.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. at the Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, on Tuesday, April 24, 2001. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be on Wednesday, April 25, also at Conley Funeral Home, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow the services at Blackberry Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in his name and mailed to P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
For more information on the service, times, and directions, you can call 1-800-8-CONLEY.
