Joseph P. Fabrizius
Joseph P. Fabrizius, age 69, of Maple Park, passed away at Loyola University Hospital in Chicago on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, after a valiant fight following a tragic accident. Though his body gave up, his spirit never did, and he is now free to race through the heavens.
Joseph was born July 11, 1931 on the family farm in Richardson, Ill., the son of Peter and Katherine (Then) Fabrizius. He grew up living the life of a farmer and attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Maple Park High School with the class of 1949. After high school Joe continued to work for his father on the farm.
Joe met the woman he would marry through a blind date to a movie in downtown Chicago. After a whirlwing courtship, Joseph P. Fabrizius and Carol M. Oksas were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Aug. 7, 1954. They began their new life together back on the family farm. In the early 1960's Joe bought the farm from his father and raised dairy cows until 1968. Although he was born a farmer he lived to race. He started a motorcycle shop in the garage with his brother-in-law, Bob Oksas. Joe had racing in his blood and raced motorcycles whenever he could and was a registered member of the American Motorcycle Association. Over only a few years, the shop grew in popularity, the shop moved across the street and Bob-Jo Cycle Co. was born in July of 1961. Then in 1962 they expanded their interest to the Bob-Jo Speedway. The partnership of Joe, his brother Nick and Bob proved to be a winner. At first they raced go-carts and eventually moved up to motorcycles and stock cars. In 1970, Bob-Jo Speedway became Sycamore Speedway. Though the name changed, the racing stayed the same; fast, furious and fun for the whole family. The speedway has hosted many other events through it's history such as a circus, concerts, birthday parties, weddings, auctions, car shows, rodeos and the famous corn boils. The racing bug was passed on to his kids and you can see a little piece of Joe in each one of them. Many family vacations included road trips with the family "bus" that slept ten and visited race tracks across the United States.
Joe was a hardworking, fast driving man with a gruff exterior, but had a heart of gold, especially when it came to his grandchildren. He lived to give his grandkids rides in his 1949 Harley Davidson Side Car whenever they visited. Although he had four sons and four daughters, his extended children cannot be numbered. He was a father figure to many of his employees. His teachings were repeated until they were known backwards and forwards: "Life goes on", "May all your problems be little ones", "Be nice to everybody...someday you might need them", "You solve more problems talking than fighting", "If you can't start it, you can't ride it". "We need more indians than chiefs" and many other memorable quotes. He was also a man of nature and loved his trees. Whenever one blew down, he planted one or two to replace it. When the chips were down, Joe was the strength that kept everyone going. Over all, Joe was known for being Joe, and that is all he needed to be.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; eight children, Linda (Dan) Gerace and their children, Tiffany, Samantha, Brett and Kelli of DeKalb, Cynthia Jo Fabrizius and her children, Amanda and John of Sycamore, Rodney (Gina) Fabrizius and their children, Jacob and Matthew of Maple Park, Julie (Jeffrey) Andrews and their children, Lawrence, Annalee and Chad of Boca Raton, Fla., Keith (Julie) Fabrizius and their children, Bradley and Amy of Maple Park, Pamm Fabrizius and her children, Dustin and Jessica of Sycamore, Paul (Linda) Fabrizius and their daughter, Nina of Itasca, Steven (Lisa) Fabrizius of Genoa; a brother, Nicholas Fabrizius of Maple Park; two sisters, Jenny (Raymond) Klotz of Maple Park and Sue Schramer of Virgil; a sister-in-law, Marie Fabrizius of Maple Park; many nieces, nephews, "adopted children" and friends too many to number.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Fabrizius; and a sister, Mary Feiza Arne.
A Mass to Celebrate His Life will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2001 in S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Virgil. Graveside services will follow with Fr. Les Echieva officiating.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m., Friday in the Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn.
"It is my greatest wish that those I love heal wisely and well the wounds of grief and emerge from the experience at peace with themselves and stronger for the race of life." Joe
