Elvera Caroline Carroll
Elvera Caroline Carroll, 80, Woodstock, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in her home.
She was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Richmond, to Charles and Lottie Anderson. She married John C.Carroll Sr. Nov. 10, 1943, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hartland.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She was a past president of the Doe Club and a member of BPOE Woodstock Lodge 1043.
She was a co-proprietor of the Red Mill Tavern in Woodstock and managed the establishment with her husband from 1976 to 1995. She was a Republican candidate for sheriff in 1970 but was unsuccessful in the primary.
Her interests included her grandchildren, her garden and her pets.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, John (Beverly) Carroll Jr., and Thomas Carroll; an ex-daughter-in-law, Lynette Carroll; and four grandchildren, Brianne, Sean, Nicole and Jeffrey Carroll.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Raymond Anderson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, and a liturgical wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 16, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. James McLoughlin officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock. Memorial donations may be made to the Assisi Animal Foundation, P. O. Box 143, Crystal Lake, IL 60039.
Rose Irlacher
Rose Irlacher, 94, Marengo, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Sarinas in Lake Geneva, Wis.
She was born Oct. 18, 1908, in New Briton, Conn., to Josef and Rosa (Deutsch) Dax. She married Leonard Irlacher Sept. 27, 1930, in Chicago.
She was formerly of Chicago, moving to Marengo in 1997. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marengo and was active with the Sacred Heart Seniors, as well as the Marengo Seniors Club.
Survivors include her son, Leonard (Judith) Irlacher, Marengo; four grandchildren, Lisa Irlacher, Charleston, S.C., Paul (Michele) Irlacher, Cherry Valley, Michael Irlacher, Aruba, and Linda Irlacher, Marengo; and a great-granddaughter, Brooke Irlacher, Cherry Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother; and a sister.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at the Sacred Heart Church in Marengo. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities Foundation.
Janet Schmieding
Janet Schmieding, 84, Woodstock, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Woodstock Residence Nursing Home.
She was born March 14, 1918, in Waukesha, Wis., to William F. and Anna B. (Schiller) Radtke. She married Victor K. Schmieding July 26, 1975, in Woodstock.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She graduated from Pittsville Wisconsin High School. She had been employed with Woodstock Die Cast from 1962 until her retirement in 1980; and she was also a member of the Ladies of the Moose and the American Legion.
Survivors include her children, Patricia (Jerry) Kraemer, Woodstock, Jack (Ann) Nieman, Woodstock, and William (Darlene) Nieman, Harvard; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nov. 14, 1984; a sister, Agnes Hegyi; and a brother, Vic Radtke.
Visitation, followed by the funeral service, was June 25, at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. Interment was in McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery, Woodstock.
Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
Barbara J. Rabbitt
Barbara J. Rabbitt, 76, a longtime resident of Woodstock, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock.
She was born June 27, 1926, in Littleton, to Fredrick and Rose (O’Conner) McCoy. She married Raymond Rabbitt in 1957, in Woodstock.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. She was a member of the Women of the Moose. She was an active volunteer for Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock, volunteering for more than 500 hours. She was an avid reader and loved to do crossword puzzles. She also loved to go to garage sales.
Survivors include three sons, Clifford (Kathleen) Andrews, Bethel, Alaska, Mike (Christy) Andrews, Eagle River, Wis., and Mitchell Andrews, Chicago; a daughter, Peggy (Jose) Garza, Woodstock; six grandchildren, Kevin Garza, Jessie Garza, Emily Andrews, Nelle Andrews, Will Andrews and Daniel Andrews; two great-grandchildren, Logan Garza and Dakota Garza; a brother, Louis “Mac” McCoy, Mt. Sterling; and a sister, Betty Latzman, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1994; and eight siblings.
Visitation, followed by the funeral service, was June 24 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Joy Bauer Bulla officiating. Burial was in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.

Alfred Thomas Berthold
Alfred Thomas Berthold, 72, Woodstock, and formerly of Elk Grove Village, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock.
He was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Chicago, the son of German immigrant Max Alfred Berthold and Irish immigrant Anastasia Dwyer Berthold.
Al, as his friends knew him, helped his father build and develop Berthold Nursery, Morton Grove. In the early 1950s, he and his father moved the business to Elk Grove Village, where the company flourished. In 1968, the Bertholds purchased property in Woodstock to expand their production nursery into a full-service company. Under Al’s direction, Berthold’s Flower Barn, Berthold Nursery and Berthold’s Plantasyland garden center were one of Chicagoland’s premier horticultural facilities. He retired from the business in 1994.
He was a friend to many, and a loving, devoted father, grandfather, uncle and husband. He will be remembered by many, loved and missed by all.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia; a daughter, Debra Chesney (David); two sons, Thomas (Lori) and Gary (Sara) Berthold; eight grandchildren, Amy, Danielle, Kourtney, Adam, Alfred II, Niki, Anastasia and Blake; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Travis Zelm; and two sisters, Inga Roberts and Jeanne Zalarick.
Visitation was June 23 at The Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows. The funeral service was June 24, followed by the interment in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery, Oak Brook.
Earl H. Bauman Jr.
Earl H. Bauman Jr., 52, Linn Township, Wis., died Friday, 21, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 8, 1950, in Elkhorn, Wis., to Earl and Joyce Anderson Bauman Sr. He married Sharon G. Schaid July 13, 1974, in Hebron.
He was a graduate of Big Foot High School, Big Foot, Wis. He had been employed with different Ford Automotive garages as service manager for a number of years. The past five years he owned and operated Earl’s Automotive, Lake Geneva, Wis.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Linn Township; a daughter, Amy Bauman; a son, Jason (Dawn) Bauman; a step-grandson, Austin Elliott; four sisters, Lydia (Mike) Helpin, Lake Geneva, Jackie (Keith) Hall and Debbie (Peter) Meyer, all of Darien, Wis., and Terry (Bob) Vickers, Harvard.
Visitation was June 24 at Steinke Funeral Home, Lake Geneva. Funeral services were held June 25 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Cory Braatz of Como Community Church officiating.
Burial was in Linn Hebron Cemetery.
Vivian Okey
Vivian Okey, 80, Woodstock, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Woodstock Residence, Woodstock.
She was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Dorchester, Iowa, to Theodore and Loretta (Wolstrum) Schwarzhoff. She married Clyde Okey June 2, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She worked as an office manager for a telemarketing firm. She enjoyed baking. She loved to spend time with her loving family.
Survivors include two sons, Lee (Jan) Okey, St. Charles, and Jim (Bonnie) Okey, Florida; three daughters, Linda Wirtz, Elkhorn, Wis., Joan (Don) Kadlubowski, Mississippi, and Mary (Dave) Borcovan, Woodstock; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; and one brother.
Visitation, followed by the funeral Mass, was June 27 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Sylvester Nnaso officiating. Burial was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock.
Masses in her name would be appreciated.

Daniel Ray Walker
Daniel Ray Walker, 43, Fruitland, Fla., and formerly of Lakemoor, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Tampa General Hospital in Florida.
He was born Sept. 22, 1959, in Evanston, to Raymond and Aline (Miller).
He had a great love for traveling. He was a construction worker in Florida. He loved to work on all types of cars.
Survivors include his parents, Lakemoor; two brothers, James (Karen) Walker, Fruitland Park, Fla., and Steven (Melody) Walker, Wonder Lake; two sisters, Patricia (Steven) Muller-Phelps, Port Townsends, Wash., and Cynthia (Alfredo) Montero, Woodstock; three nephews; four nieces; three great-nephews; and many wonderful friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation, followed by the funeral, was June 27 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Roger Olson officiating. Burial was in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.

Louis Aiello
Louis Aiello, 86, Woodstock and formerly of Harvard and Chicago, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Woodstock Residence.
He was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Chicago, to Michael and Angelina (Marasco) Aiello.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked behind the counter at Mid-Central Supply for 35 years.
Survivors include two brothers, John and Albert; and two sisters, Josephine Cavallaro and Rose Ripaldi.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank and Carlo.
Visitation was June 27 at Cumberland Chapels, Norridge. The funeral was June 28 at the funeral home. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Hillside.
Tyler Morgan Troglia
Tyler Morgan Troglia, 2 1/2 months, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry.
He was born April 11, 2003, in Woodstock, to Frank J. and Michelle A. (Morgan) Troglia.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Megan McLaughlin; two aunts, Heather (Terry) Sova, Belvidere, and Suzy (Rob) Troglia, Woodstock; an uncle, Jason Morgan, Woodstock; his paternal grandparents, Frank and Linda Troglia, Woodstock; two great-grandmothers, Florence Dvorak, Gages Lake, and Marie Troglia, Marionette Park; and his maternal grandmother, Sue (the late John) Morgan, Carpentersville.
Visitation, followed by the service, was June 28 at Colonial Funeral Home, McHenry. Burial was in St. Patrick Countryside Cemetery, McHenry.

David J. Ewen
David J. Ewen, 58, Woodstock, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock.
He was born Dec. 18, 1944, in Woodstock, to Harold R. and Mary W. (Walsh) Ewen. He married Victoria Purdum June 4, 2001, in Woodstock.
He had worked for the city of Woodstock for 30 years. He was most recently working with Stan’s Office Technologies in Woodstock as a service technician and had been with Stan’s for the past nine years.
Survivors include his wife; an uncle, Donald (Ann) Walsh, Kenosha, Wis.; an aunt, Yvonne (Elsworth) Tait, Kenosha; numerous cousins, including Jack Steadman, Mark Steadman and Tony Steadman; and his devoted pet, Xena.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Harold Ewen Jr.; and an aunt, Rose Molinaro.
The funeral Mass was held June 30 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock.

George H. Hendle
George H. Hendle, 69, formerly of Harvard, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at his home in Fredricktown, Mo.
He was born Aug. 13, 1932, in Chicago, to John and Margaret (Lagee) Hendle. He married Linida Japp Dec. 9, 1984.
He was a cement finisher and carpenter before joining the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department in February 1968 as a patrolman. He received many promotions over his career, holding the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, captain, chief deputy and finally undersheriff in 1985. In 1986, he was elected sheriff of McHenry County and served as sheriff until his retirement in December 1993.
He was a member of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, the Missouri Sheriff’s Association and the Harvard Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Fredricktown; two children, John (Vickie) Hendle and Marty (Anita) Hendle; two stepchildren, Alicia (Bob) Wilson and Sean Rowe; nine grandchildren, Adam Hendle, John Hendle, Sarah Hendle, Emily Hendle, Ashley Hendle, Kaitlyn Hendle, Tess Wilson, Joe Wilson and Dainen Rowe; two brothers, Jack (Cathy) Hendle and Bob (Diane) Hendle; a sister, Carol Hendle; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jim Hendle and Ron Hendle.
Visitation was June 30 at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service was July 1 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. Interment was private.

Norma J. Luedtke
Norma J. Luedtke, 73, Woodstock, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Woodstock.
She was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Marseilles, to Arthur and Violet (Gray) Carlson.
She was a life member of the McHenry County Fair Association. She was an active member of the Busy Beavers 4-H Club in Woodstock. She also worked at Farm and Fleet, Woodstock, for 18 years. She was a member of the McHenry County Saddle Club. She also loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Greg (Laurel) Luedtke, Cary; two daughters, Denise (Robert) Freund, Woodstock, and Stephanie (Joseph) Tantillo, Peoria, Ariz.; and five grandchildren, Keri Mund and her fiancé, Rick Bergbreiter Jr., Boone Freund, Drew Luedtke, Cole Freund and Benjamin Luedtke.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home, with Hospice Chaplain Judy Rooney officiating. Inurnment will be private at McHenry County Memorial Park.
