Virginia E. Peacock, 91, Woodstock, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born May 13, 1915, in Horicon, Wis., to Anchor and Hilma (Peterson) Rasmussen. She married J. Gordon Peacock June 18, 1937, in Greenwood. She farmed in the Greenwood area with her husband. She had been secretary for the McHenry County Farm Bureau until her retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. She enjoyed doing crafts and playing cards, and she was an avid Cubs fan. Survivors include a brother, George (Lucille) Rasmussen, Greenwood; a sister, Ada Huenick, Waupun, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Patricia Rasmussen, Wauconda; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Axel and Clarence Rasmussen. The visitation and funeral were held June 28 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Jim Young officiating. Interment was private in Greenwood Cemetery, Woodstock. June R. Stroner, 84, Woodstock, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Governors Park of Barrington. She was born June 16, 1922, in Crystal Lake, to Domon and Elonza (LaBroom) Leveque. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, cooking and, most of all, spending time with her family and grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Marilyn Gibbons, Diane Joyner and Jerry (Debbie) Stroner; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Stroner; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kenneth Jr.; a son-in-law, Floyd Gibbons; two sisters; and three brothers. Visitation was June 20 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, Crystal Lake. Kathryn Vacula, 91, Elmhurst, formerly of Wonder Lake, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at her home. She was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Chicago, to George and Matilda (Hrvoj) Koluder. She married Stephen S. Vacula Nov. 24, 1938, in Chicago. She lived with her family in Wonder Lake for 21 years before moving to Elmhurst to live for the past 25 years. While in Wonder Lake, she was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Lorelle Moeck, Elmhurst; a granddaughter, Liesl Moeck, Elmhurst; two nieces; a nephew; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Mary, Barb and Betty; and a sister-in-law, Anne Vacula. Visitation was June 19 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral Mass was celebrated June 20 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Wonder Lake, with the Rev. Harriet B. Kolb, 90, Woodstock, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Hearthstone Manor, Woodstock. She was born June 18, 1915, in Stevens Point, Wis., to John and Anna (Strykowski) Boska. She married George F. Kolb May 11, 1958, in Chicago. He died in May 1993. She worked for 37 years at Brach Candy Co. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. Survivors include two sisters, Dolores Boska, Woodstock, and Antoinette Mandziara, Elk Grove Village; nieces and nephews, Barbara Warren, Geraldine Mandziara, Thomas Mandziara and Paul Mandziara; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Visitation was June 18 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. James 'Pops' Eugene Kamin
James "Pops" Eugene Kamin, 66, Belvidere, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at his home. He was born Oct. 14, 1939, in Woodstock, to Edwin and Lillian Kamin. He married Linda Brenneka Sept. 7, 1991, at Paradise Park Campground, Garden Prairie, where they were seasonal campers for more than 30 years. He was a retired craftsman who had worked for his grandson Bill Long. He was employed at Woodstock Die Cast for 24 years, and he retired from the Woodstock City Fire Department after 31 years of service. He was a member of the Woodstock Moose Lodge since April 1972. An avid bowler with three perfect games of 300, he also enjoyed golf, horseshoes and the White Sox. He was proud of his Lawn Chair Dads, Kent Welsh, Guy Busch, Kurt Busch and others. Survivors include his wife; his children, Guy (Michele) Busch, Candy (Kent) Welsh and Kurt (Candy) Busch; his stepdaughters, Deb (Rick Albee) Bloomfield, Jean (Dave) Chase, Laurie (Jim) Saunders and Sherry (Matt) Thuma; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Pat Begley, Robert (Betty) Kamin, Karen (Dave) Akerberg, Dale (PJ O'Reilly) Kamin, Jack (Chris) Kamin and Jill (Ed) Mendum; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Smith; a brother-in-law, Charles Brenneka; and a grandson, Mark Bole Jr. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, at the First Presbyterian Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Jeffrey Borgerson officiating. Ruthella Jane "Midge" Strang, 82, Woodstock, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at her home, after suffering a long illness, with her family surrounding her. She was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Hebron, to Arthur and Ruth (Weaver) Latham. She married Fred Strang Sr. in Crystal Lake July 31, 1943, after they met at Woodstock Auto Lite, where they both worked. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She worked for 25 years at Oak Manufacturing, Crystal Lake. She was the bookkeeper at Fred's Upholstery, Woodstock. She enjoyed knitting and gardening. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Las Vegas. Survivors include her husband, Woodstock; a son, Fred (Janice) Strang Jr., Woodstock; two daughters, Mary Jo (James) Montalbano, Hoffman Estates, and Kristine (Rick) Rasmusen, Harvard; seven grandchildren, Steven Strang, Craig (Tina) Strang, Erin Rasmusen, Jennifer (Dan) Cobb, Megan (Jake) DeWalt, Rick Rasmusen Jr. and Michael Montalbano; seven great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jackson, Joe, Riley, Benjamin, Jayne and Makenna; and two brothers, Arthur (Jeanette) Latham and James Latham. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Gretchen; an infant daughter, Kathleen; and two sisters, Betty Kretchmer and Carole Courier. Florence K. Knox, 82, Woodstock and formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. She was born June 27, 1923, in Woodstock, to Gustaf and Katrine Madsen Persson. She married Gordon Knox in 1942 in Fort Polk, La. Survivors include five children, Judy (John) Bloom, East Moline, Thomas Knox (special friend Jody Worts), McHenry, Tim (Jan) Knox, Moline, James (Pam) Knox, Moline, and John "Jack" Knox, Woodstock; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Myrtle Beresh, Delavan, Wis., Millie Luallen, Woodstock, and Esther Wienke, Woodstock. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1990; and two brothers. Visitation was June 9 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Cecil Merryman, 91, Marengo, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at his home in rural Marengo. He was born June 28, 1914, in Mercer County, Ky., to Emery and Ethel (Wiley) Merryman. He married Anna Krusling Feb. 28, 1938. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society for more than 50 years. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He raised German Shepherds. Mostly, he enjoyed watching his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Marie (Melvyn) Madeksho, Eads, Tenn.; a son, James R. (Martha) Merryman, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Richard Henry Merryman; and a sister, Lavinia Johnson. Evelyn M. Sepsey, 92, Woodstock, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Hartland. She was born March 25, 1914, in Woodstock, to Henry and Bertha (Jaeschke) Ohlrich. She was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, where she was involved as the Sunday school director and superintendent, as well as chairwoman of the senior ministry. She was an avid bird-watcher, and she enjoyed playing pinochle and golf. She retired from the American Lung Association after serving for many years. Survivors include a daughter, Penne Slavin, Woodstock; two grandchildren, Traci (Jeff) Cook and Lori (Daniel) Dechant; and six great-grandchildren, Courtney Cook, Carlin Cook, Zachary Cook, and Kayelin, Alexa and Leah Dechant. She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Alfred Mengs, Charles Williams and Frank Sepsey; two brothers, Clarence and Wilbert; and two sisters, Helen and Joan. Rita A. Hofer, 100, Crystal Lake and formerly of Woodstock, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at her daughter's home in Crystal Lake. She was born Sept. 23, 1905, in Chicago, to Joseph and Georgianna (De'Rues) Gagne. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Crystal Lake. She was a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. Survivors include a son, Ronald (Marianne) Ward, Carol Stream; a daughter, Sandra (Tony) Rasmussen, Crystal Lake; a son-in-law, Ronald Jackson, Wonder Lake; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Douglas Ward; her second husband, Harry Hofer; a daughter, Patricia Jackson; a grandson, Randall Jackson; an infant daughter, Margaret Mary; two brothers, Raoul Gagne and Al Gagne; and a sister, Raina Betz. Stephen John Schall, 63, Woodstock, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at his home. He was born June 14, 1942, in Chicago, to Stephen and Josephine (Styger) Schall. He married Patricia A. Umentum July 7, 1962, in Green Bay, Wis. He graduated from Premontre High School in Green Bay. He lived in Oak Lawn for many years and worked at Continental Can Co. in Itasca until moving to Woodstock in 1986. He enjoyed music, the outdoors and spending time with his children, grandchildren, family and many friends. He was a car enthusiast who created one-of-a-kind cars. He was a man of strong faith, a devoted husband, a loving son, father and grandfather, and a wonderful friend who was loved and will be missed by many. Survivors include five children, Mark (Donna Lee) Schall, Oak Forest, Christine (David) Mitchell, Oak Lawn, Stephen (Sheila) Schall, Frankfort, Anita (Stephen) Major, Wonder Lake, and Jodi (James) Gluth, Marengo; his mother, Woodstock; his mother-in-law, Irene Umentum, Green Bay; and 10 grandchildren, Matthew Lee, DJ, Joseph, Bailey and Jamie Mitchell, Zachary, Nicholas and Samantha Major, Emily Schall and Jimmy Gluth. He was preceded in death by his father; his wife; and his father-in-law, Hilbert Umentum. Melvin L. Ritter, 64, Hebron, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at his home. He was born July 20, 1941, in Woodstock, to Harry and Virginia (Welter) Ritter. He married Barbara Cornelison March 16, 1963, in Lubbock, Texas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam. He was a past member of the Woodstock Moose Lodge. He enjoyed camping and motorcycling. He was a member of the Hebron Doughnut Shop Club. Survivors include his wife, Hebron; a son, Don (Dawn) Ritter, Woodstock; two daughters, Laurie (David) Bulow, Hebron, and Tammy (Nick) Danelski, Crowley, Texas; a brother, Ralph (Patricia) Ritter, Woodstock; and six grandchildren, Chase, Trent, Jaid, J.J., Jacob, Barrett and Elle. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond (Ruth Ann) Ritter and James Ritter; a baby daughter, Kimberly; and a grandson, Tommy. Dianne P. Miller, 47, Woodstock, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. She was born April 24, 1959, in Joliet, to Thomas and Rita Glick. She married Joseph A. Miller Nov. 12, 1994, in Chicago Heights. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She had been a beautician for 20 years and then was an antiques dealer and manager of the I Remember That antiques store. She was involved in the community as a Girl Scout leader, and she helped during lunchtime at St. Mary School, Woodstock. Survivors include her husband, Woodstock; her children, Hollie Miller and Michael Newcomb, both of Woodstock; her parents, Lansing; her uncle, Art (Mary) Schiemann; her aunt, Sister Ellen Claire Miller; her mother-in-law, Carol Miller, Joliet; and many first and second cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Joseph E. Miller. Visitation was June 4 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Mary Poltzer Konzier, 95, died Friday, May 26, 2006, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born Sept. 12, 1910, in Chicago, to Stephen and Rose (Wolfinger) Schneider. She was raised in Europe and Racine, Wis. Although her life was fraught with personal challenges, she was hard-working and self-reliant, unselfishly raising her three daughters in Chicago and sending them to private schools. For 30 years, she was a resident and good neighbor on Leland Avenue in Norridge, and she recently lived in Sun City, Huntley, for three years before her residency at Valley Hi Nursing Home. She worked at Zenith for 25 years and at Taft and Senn high schools in Chicago for 10 years. She was a member of Park Ridge VFW Post 3597 and St. Priscilla's Senior Center, Chicago. She enjoyed walking, was an avid reader and was an excellent cook known for her plum dumplings every fall and sugar doughnuts at every family celebration. Her legacy is the example she set. The concern for her family, the generosity of her time, her caring for those who needed help and her common-sense wisdom were expressions of her love and devotion. She was loved dearly and will be missed greatly. Her family, friends and neighbors were cherished above all. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (James) Darow and Elaine (Richard) Glowacki; 10 grandchildren, Steve (Cathy) Szeszel, Celeste (Ted) Collins, James (DeAnn) Darow, Susan (Sara) Darow, Christine (Robert) Straszewski, Mary Lou (Terry) Jaeger, Therese (Jeff) Haney, Sandy (Doug) Williams, Marianne Tonyan and Jim Glowacki; 22 great-grandchildren, Rachel and Nicole Szeszel, Ellyse and Sara Collins, Emily, Karlee and Holly Darow, Elisabeth and Eva Darow, Margaret and John Straszewski, Isabella, Christopher and Joey Jaeger, Megan and Rita Haney, Jake, Bobby and Michelle Williams, and Amanda, Frank and Jodie Tonyan; many nieces and nephews; and a friend, Jackie Villwock. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Steve Poltzer and Mike Konzier; a daughter, Rose Marie Szeszel; a son-in-law, Edward "Bud" Szeszel; her parents; a sister, Agnes Sladaritz; a brother, Steven Schneider, who died at Pearl Harbor in World War II; and a friend, Helen Szeszel. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated May 30 at St. Mary Church, Huntley, with the Rev. Robert Darow officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were made by James A. Anna E. Metzger, 97, Woodstock, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at her home. She was born Nov. 7, 1908, in Madison, Wis., to John and Stella (Walsh) O'Malley. She married Elmer Metzger June 25, 1930, in Harvard. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She was a talented crafter and always was working with needlepoint, crocheting, embroidery or knitting. She was a member of the Mariola Club at church, the Legion of Mary and the Mothers Club. She was devoted to her cat, Sandy. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Metzger, Woodstock; a sister, Mary Ellen (Gale) Berg, Castleberry, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nov. 8, 1991; and many brothers and sisters. Visitation and Mass of the Resurrection were celebrated June 3 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with Monsignor James McLoughlin officiating. Rita L. Medlinger, 78, Woodstock and formerly of Marengo, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at her home. She was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Highland Park, to Robert and Tina Boilini. She married Irving Medlinger June 24, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was a longtime employee of Illinois Bell Telephone Company, working as an operator-supervisor. She was an avid golfer, and she also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was an active member of the Crystal Lake Bridge Club. Survivors include a son, John (Jan) Medlinger, Missoula, Mont.; a daughter, Suzan (Eric) Hein, Capron; a brother, Robert (Evelyn) Boilini, Arkansas; and five grandchildren, Joshua and Michael Hein, and Ryan, Cory and Alicia Boilini. A celebration of her life was held June 2 at Deeter's Restaurant, Woodstock. Memorials can be made to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager, Barrington, IL 60010. Carl L. Greenleaf, 80, Woodstock, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Waukegan, to Leslie and Dorothy (Huesing) Greenleaf. After graduating from Waukegan Township High School, he enlisted in the Army in 1943. He rose in rank, and, as a section sergeant, he was in charge of two heavy mortar squads in the First Battalion, 343rd Infantry Regiment, 86th Infantry Division of the Army of the United States. His unit was involved in major combat operations across Germany during the liberation of Europe. Before war's end, his unit was redeployed to the Philippine Islands to subdue remnants of the Japanese Imperial forces. He was discharged in 1946. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He attended college on the GI Bill, and in 1950, he received a bachelor's degree from Lake Forest College. In 1952, he married the love of his life, E. Anita Knutson, also of Waukegan. He received a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois in 1959. As an elementary teacher and principal, he served in Illinois public education for 30 years. He was the principal of schools in Verona, Elburn, Hoffman Estates and Lake Forest, where he lived for many years. He was an active member and past commander of American Legion Post 264, Lake Forest, and an officer of the 86th Blackhawk Division Association. In retirement, he moved to Woodstock, where he lived with his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. He attended Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and became a member of the McHenry County Retired Teachers Association and VFW Post 5040 in Woodstock. He was a man of strong faith, a true gentleman and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and patriot. Survivors include a son, Mark (June) Greenleaf; five grandchildren, David Greenleaf, Andrew Greenleaf, April (George) Anderson, Adam Milbratz and Kristin Schramer; two stepsisters, Mary Gordon and Marcia (Jerry) Lloyd; nephews, nieces and cousins; and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his stepparents, Leslie (Vida) Greenleaf and Dorothy (Harry) Nehls; and an infant sister. The visitation and funeral were held June 3 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Arthur Bergren officiating. Jameson "Jamie" Tennison, 26, Woodstock, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, in Woodstock. He was born Jan. 4, 1980, in St. Charles, to Justin and Kim (Dix) Tennison. Survivors include his mother, Woodstock; his father, Justin (Debra) Tennison, McLeansboro; a sister, Janayah Tennison, Long Beach, Calif.; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Joan Dix; his paternal grandmother, MaryLou Tennison; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Bobby Lee Tennison. Visitation was June 1 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was June 2 at the funeral home. Burial was private. Memorials can be made to any humane society or dog rescue shelter in the donor's area.

John Puzzo, 78, Woodstock, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at his home. He was born July 25, 1927, in Chicago, to Joseph and Giovanna (Manzella) Puzzo. He married Dorothy Andrews June 25, 1949, in Woodstock. He was a veteran of World War II, stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany. He was an electronics technician for many years, then worked for the Woodstock Police Department for 10 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion, and he was an avid HO model train collector. Survivors include five sons, John (Linda) Puzzo, Patrick (Kendra) Puzzo, Daniel (Jenelda) Puzzo, Richard Puzzo and Christopher Puzzo; two daughters, Joanna (Dave) Eddy and Kathleen (Steven) Zimmerman; 16 grandchildren, John, Joel, Nathan, Christina, Jennifer, Michelle, Eric, Janna, Kristine, Hannah, Andrew, Benjamin, David, Debra, Jason and Erin; and two great-grandchildren, Alisha and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June 23, 1999; two sisters, Mary Amico and Sadie Mengarelli; and a brother, Joseph Puzzo. The visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, until the funeral at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Puzzo officiating. Lorraine E. Salmen, 84, Woodstock, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born April 9, 1922, in Chicago, to Sam and Ella Arthofer. She married Daniel Salmen Nov. 22, 1941, in Chicago. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She formerly lived at Hearthstone Manor assisted-living homes. She worked at Sears for many years. She enjoyed the company of family and friends. She and her husband enjoyed music and dancing. Survivors include a son, Daniel (Dannelle) Salmen, Rociada, N.M.; two daughters, Barbara (Wayne) Dye, Woodstock, and Gail (Jim) Mathieson, Wheaton; six grandchildren, Amy (Bobbie) Blalock, David Dye, Lucy Salmen, Christie (John) Crouch, Scott (Elizabeth) Mathieson and Brett Mathieson; four great-grandchildren, Bradley, Daniel, Matthew and Zachary Mathieson; and a brother, Sam Arthofer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jan. 22, 2005; her parents; and a brother, Robert Arthofer. The visitation will be from 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, until the service at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Arthur Bergren officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 1300 Kishwaukee Valley Road, Woodstock, IL 60098.
