David R. "Mac" McFarlin, 78, Huntley and formerly of Woodstock, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Harvard, to John and Vera (Johnson) McFarlin. He married Carol LaRose Jan. 19, 1952, in Walworth, Wis. He resided in rural Woodstock and Walworth on his family's farm. He retired from Union Special in Huntley in 1992 after 31 years of service. He was active in Woodstock Little League for several years and coached his sons' teams. He enjoyed life, traveling and watching television. He was an avid Bears fan and loved spending time with his family. He was a member of Lord and Savior Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake. Survivors include his children, Sharon McFarlin, Woodstock, Scott (Lisa) McFarlin, Grand Prairie, Texas, Tracy McFarlin Frank, Woodstock, Craig (Nancy Ahrens) McFarlin, Stevens Point, Wis., Jeffrey (Diane) McFarlin, Sugar Grove, and Eric McFarlin, Rockford; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan, Angie, Courtney, Jacob, Lauren, Rachel and Andriy; two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Jonathan; a sister, Joan Jones; a brother, James McFarlin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three sisters, Marjorie Smith, Marion Egdahl and Jean DeBachacre; and two brothers, Ralph and Kenneth. Visitation, followed by the service, was Nov. 6 at Windridge Funeral Home, Cary. Interment was private. Memorials can be made to the family for a charity to be chosen at a later date.

Norman E. Vetter, 83, Belvidere and formerly of Forsyth, Mo., died Thursday, March 2, 2006, after a short illness. He was born June 7, 1922, in Newton, Wis., to Emil and Amanda (Goeke) Vetter. He married Stella Knutson Aug. 10, 1942, in Manitowoc, Wis. He worked the shipyards in Manitowoc and moved to Belvidere in 1953. He was a welding shop foreman at W.F. & John Barnes in Rockford for 26 years before retiring to Forsyth in 1981. He was a member of Forsyth United Methodist Church, the Good Sam Camping Club and the Acorn Sam Camping Club and a lifetime member of the Illinois Freemasons. Survivors include two sons, Robb (Grace) Vetter, Woodstock, and Ronald (Terri) Vetter, Belvidere; and four grandchildren, Geoff Vetter and Nicole Vetter, both of Woodstock, and Adam Vetter and Ryan Vetter, both of Belvidere. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, December 2004; and a sister, Delores Van Dornick. Visitation was March 6 at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, Belvidere. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 10, at Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home, 1638 E. Highway 76, Branson, Mo. Burial will be in Ozarks Memorial Park, Branson. Ann E. Haberer, 97, Woodstock, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at Sunrise Assisted Living, Buffalo Grove. She was born Oct. 11, 1908, in Northfork, W.V., to John and Ida (Wells) Drawbond. She married Glenn Haberer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodstock, and volunteered at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Hartland. She and her family had farmed in the Woodstock area since 1947. Survivors include a nephew, Robert (Carol) Lammie, Chicago; a niece, Jeanie (Edward) Brausse, Tucson, Ariz.; five great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Visitation was March 1 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service was held March 2 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Young officiating. Rosemary Slaughter, 69, Wonder Lake, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington. She was born Nov. 17, 1936, in Patterson, N.J., to Frank and Sarah (Melette) Dubinskas. A Wonder Lake resident for 10 years, she formerly lived in Patterson, N.J. Most recently, she was a resident at Crystal Pines Health Care Center in Crystal Lake. A member of Christ the King Church, she enjoyed volunteering as the bingo caller during church bingo games. While living at Crystal Pines, she enjoyed playing the game of bingo. She found the services of Family Alliance in Woodstock to be invaluable to her over the past several years and treasured the many close friendships she made with clients and the caring staff. Survivors include a son, Carl (Maryann) Slaughter, Belleville, N.J.; a daughter, JoAnn (Joseph) Chovanee, Wonder Lake; four grandchildren, Michael Slaughter, Belleville, and Raymond, David and Kristina Chovanec, all of Wonder Lake; a brother, Albert (Bridget) Dubinskas, Florida; and two sisters, Helen (Niel) Riker, George, and Barbara (the late Donald) Mann, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene F. "Gene" Slaughter; and a brother, Sonny, in childhood. Visitation was March 3 at Justen's Wonder Lake Funeral Home, Wonder Lake. Maria Kordopitoulas, 88, Greece, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at her home in Woodstock. She was born Jan. 1, 1918, in Nestani Arcadia, Greece, to Panagiotis and Basilo (Katris) Douvikas. She married Konstantinos B. Kordopitoulas. She was a sister, wife, a mother and a grandmother and loved by all. Survivors include three children, Vasilios (Demetra) Kordopitoulas, George (Konstantina) Kordopitoulas and Georgia (Konstantinos) Doumazos; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Matheos (Vasio) Douvikas. She was preceded in death by her husband. Visitation was March 6 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Elizabeth "Tess" Grace, 40, Woodstock, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at her home. Survivors include her partner, Laura Askey; two sisters, Mary Grace and Joan Selby; two brothers, James Grace and John Grace; and nieces and nephews, Andrew, Sean, Roxanna, Molly, Eileen, P.J., Ian and Clara. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Grace and Elizabeth Grace. A memorial service was held March 4 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake. Merna D. MacKusick, 70, Woodstock, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Woodstock, to Wesley and Margaret (Burton) Brewer. She married Byron MacKusick April 15, 1966. She was formerly married to Albert Stoddard. She was a 1953 graduate of Woodstock High School. Survivors include her husband; four children, Shane (Sandra) Stoddard, Memphis, Tenn., Kathy (Richard) Silveria, San Jose, Calif., Leonard (Deborah) MacKusick, Belvidere, and Amy (Mark) Ulmen, Racine, Wis.; five grandchildren, Shawn Stoddard, Oceanside, Calif., Sheena Stoddard, Easley, S.C., Will MacKusick, Belvidere, Denise Moore, Belvidere, and Lucas Ulmen, Racine; a brother, Leonard (Peggy) Brewer, Georgetown, Calif.; a sister, Amy (Glen) Vanlue, Woodstock; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty J. Anderson-von Bampus Koplin, 82, Marengo and formerly of Woodstock, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the Biltmore, Belvidere. She was born July 27, 1923, in Woodstock, to Irving and Mary (Senger) Anderson. She attended Woodstock schools and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She married Robert von Bampus Feb. 3, 1945, and he preceded her in death July 15, 1966. They were the McHenry County Jitterbug King and Queen of 1945. Her nickname was "Betty Boop," and she enjoyed talking to people more than anything else. She collected teddy bears, pigs, music boxes, roosters and elephants (with their trunks up for good luck). She married Walter Koplin Dec. 6, 1975, and they made their home in Marengo. He preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Teri (Thomas) Graf, Woodstock; two stepsons, Walter (Pat) and Russ Koplin, both of Deland, Fla., and their families; six grandchildren, Phil (Sarah) Vermett, Candy (Tommy) Schuler, Angie (Sammy) Kirkland, Stefanie Dorwaldt and Krisi and Jenni; and 12 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents, and a son, Steven von Bampus, Jan. 5, 2002. Visitation was March 2 at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, Marengo. The funeral was held March 3 at the funeral home. Interment was in Marengo City Cemetery.

Ruby D. Reynolds. 80, Wonder Lake, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Hartland. She was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Shelbyville, Mo., to Ophir and Bessie (Mahaffey) Vanskike. She married Robert Reynolds Dec. 20, 1946, in Woodstock. She was a very active member at Nativity Lutheran Church, Wonder Lake. In addition to her church activities, she mostly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her friends. Survivors include two daughters, Penelope (Edward) Dolan, Woodstock, and Patricia (James) Barrett, McHenry; four grandchildren, Stephanie, Heather, Amber and James Jr. (Amanda); three great-grandchildren, Morgan, Noel and Zach; six sisters, Opal Archer, Faye (Charles) Todd, Marjorie Pickett, Delores Poor, Shirley (Dwane) Waibel and Jacqueline (Terry) Doss; a brother, Joseph (Marilyn) Vanskike; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dec. 24, 1998; an infant son, Robert Reynolds; two sisters, Lucille and Winnie; and two brothers, Claude and Junior. Edgar E. "Windy" Gates, 82, Harvard, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Woodstock Residence. He was born April 8, 1923, in Harvard, to Elmer and Ina (Labo) Gates. He owned and operated Windy's Tavern in Harvard from 1955 to 1997. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Harvard. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II in the European Theater where he received a Purple Heart. He later served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a past commander of the Woodstock VFW and a member of the Harvard American Legion and Harvard Moose Lodge. Survivors include a daughter, Gayle (Jack) Hancock, Seabrook, Texas; three sisters, Gwen Stolldorf, Woodstock, Elaine Shaffer, Cary, and Marion (Robert) Wolf, Harvard; a brother, Richard "Red" (Bonnie) Gates; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Vierck. Visitation, followed by the funeral, was held Feb. 27 at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, Harvard, with the Rev. Robert C. Donald Ray Green, 52, Woodstock, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born Jan. 24, 1954, in Rock Island, to Roy and Maxine (Chockley) Green. He married Tereasa Johnson in Coyne Center. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 186 and Local 839. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; five children, Troy (Jennifer) Green, Rock Island, LaDon (Brian) Donohoe, Springfield, Ohio, Jessica (Don) Lottchea, Poplar Grove, Aaron Cooper, Roscoe, and Brody Cooper, East Moline; eight grandchildren, Tyler, Emily, Spencer, Caitlin, Destiny, Tanner, Nickolas and Ocean; and two sisters, Mary Ellen (Ned) Nice, Lynn Center, and Donna Miller, Coal Valley. Ruth M. Gehrke, 86, Woodstock, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born April 22, 1919, in Woodstock, to Lee and Janet (Thompson) Brown. She married Louis Gehrke Oct. 28, 1939, in Woodstock. She was a resident of Woodstock for her entire life. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 5040, Woodstock. She was an avid bingo player. She loved to travel and also enjoyed going on fishing trips with her husband. Survivors include two sons, James (Barbara) Gehrke, Woodstock, and Charles (Christine) Gehrke, Woodstock; six grandchildren, Alan, Daniel, Michael (Kim) Gehrke, John Gehrke, Jessica (John) Rathbone and Michelle (Leon) Patnaude; six great-grandchildren, Joseph and Angela Rathbone, Cavin and Cassandra Gehrke, Charles Meadows and Nicholas Patnaude; and a sister-in-law, Viola Brown. Eric Henry Utech, 80, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at his home. He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Crystal Lake, to Otto and Emma (Dolenski) Utech. He married Shirley Gross March 6, 1954, in Crystal Lake. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a dairy farmer until 1987 and then raised crops until 2001. He was a member of the Associated Milk Producers, Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Woodstock VFW Post 5040 and the Harvard Moose Lodge. He was a Bake House Polka enthusiast. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed tractor pulls and steam shows. He was a loving father, grandfather and devoted friend. Survivors include four children, Deb (Scott) Lundy, Jefferson, Wis., Cindy Utech, Woodstock, and Erich (Joann) Utech and Terry (Darlene) Utech, both of Crystal Lake; and seven grandchildren, Mark, Megan and Morgan Lundy, Erik and Maggie Utech and Kayla and T.J. James A. Dickerson, 75, Woodstock, and formerly of Crystal Lake, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born Nov. 5, 1930, in Danville, to Clarence and Ethel (Wagle) Dickerson. He married Patricia Wojtas in 1979. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Robert Wurtsbaugh Chapter in Danville. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller for 32 years, until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Crystal Lake Christian Church. Survivors include five daughters, Mary Beth (Kevin) Geer, Indianapolis, Ruth Dickerson, Cissna Park, Judy Lisching, Woodstock, Tina (Ron) DeFazio, Utica, N.Y., and Jana Denisch, Baltimore; two stepchildren, Barbara (Dan) Kissee, St. Charles, and Brian (Antigone) Wojtas, Woodstock; a stepdaughter-in-law, Lori Butler, Ramsey, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. K. Darrell Baxter, 75, Woodstock, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at his home. He was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Kenneth and Zelda (Edison) Baxter. He married Charlotte Wilson May 15, 1954, in Champaign. He spent his childhood in Carthage. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1954. He served in the Army from 1954 until 1956. He received his master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1957. He started his 34-year career in education, teaching high school biology first in the Champaign-Urbana area then for three years at Woodstock High School. From 1970 until his retirement in 1991, he taught at Grant High School, Fox Lake. At both WHS and Grant, he was the head varsity football coach. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. He was a past commander of the Woodstock American Legion. He was a member of the McHenry County Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the Woodstock Moose Lodge and of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; a daughter, Kelly (Tom) Mitchell, Woodstock; three sons, Kirk Baxter, Houston, Kip (Kathy) Baxter, Woodstock, and Ken (Jodi) Baxter, Bartlett; six grandchildren, Chelsea and Keil Mitchell, Woodstock, Kelsey and Kylie Baxter, Woodstock, and Andy and Sarah Baxter, Bartlett; a brother, Frank Baxter, Fort Madison, Iowa; and two sisters, Diane Baxter, Carthage, and Janice Fair, Mundelein. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was Feb. 27 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Marian Ruth Isaksen, 75, Wonder Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born Oct. 4, 1930, to Roy and Sophie (Ferenick) Johnson. Formerly of Chicago and Des Plaines, she had been a resident of Wonder Lake for the past eight years. She worked as an accountant in the accounting department of Sidney Hillman Health Center, Chicago, for more than 15 years. After moving to Wonder Lake, she was employed at Wonder Foods. She was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church. She loved animals and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a good friend to many. Survivors include three children, Sharon (Peter) Glassman, Schaumburg, and Karen Pederson and Dennis Pederson, both of Wonder Lake; three grandchildren, Guy, Tara and Barry; a sister, Lucille Johnson, Joliet; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mae Johnson. Visitation was Feb. 12 at Justen's Wonder Lake Funeral Home. Timothy P. Carlisle, 28, Woodstock, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 19, 1977, in Elgin, to Philip and Carol (Mass) Carlisle. He attended St. Mary Grade School and Woodstock High School. He graduated from the American Motorcycle Institute in Florida. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and motorcycles. He worked as a carpenter with his father. He was a caring son, brother, uncle and friend. He was always willing to give a helping hand. Survivors include his parents, Woodstock; a sister, Diana Collins; a brother, Ken (Val) Carlisle; a niece, Katie Collins; his paternal grandmother, Greta Carlisle; his maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Mass; his special friend, Roxanne Olsen, and her children, Michael, Zachary and Nicolas; and many uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Carlisle, in 1982; his paternal grandfather, James Carlisle, in 2005; and his maternal grandfather, Frank Mass, in 1995. William R. Leanna, 88, Port Richey, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Marliere Care Center, New Port Richey, Fla. He was born in Wallace, Mich., and moved to Florida from Woodstock in 2003. He was a retired construction worker for Spancrete of Illinois, Crystal Lake, with many years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 5040 and Moose Lodge 1329, Woodstock. Loretta A. Wurtzinger, 84, Wonder Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at her daughter's home in Wonder Lake. She was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Hebron, to William O. and May (Carlisle) Fisher. She married Henry M. Wurtzinger Feb. 7, 1948, in Kenosha, Wis. Survivors include three daughters, Carol (Chuck) Kopsell, Delavan, Wis., Judy (Mike) Shouse, Wonder Lake, and Cathi (Lee) Fringer, Camp Verde, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, April 28, 1982; three brothers; and five sisters. The visitation will be from 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, followed by the funeral at noon at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Jeremy M. Hooper, 19, Union, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006. He was born April 6, 1986, in Milwaukee, to John and Laura (Eising) Hooper. He was a 2004 graduate of Huntley High School. He enjoyed golf, basketball, baseball, fishing, movies, Buffalo Wild Wings and his dog, Missy. He enjoyed spending time at his family's cabin. Survivors include his parents, Union; a brother, Jeff, Union; two sisters, Corinne and Chelsea, both of Union; his grandparents, Ron and Marian Eising, Wonder Lake, Joan Hooper, Crystal Lake, and Jack Hooper, Valrico, Fla.; his aunts and uncles, Mary (Tom) Critz, Fountain Hills, Ariz., Anne (Tim) Beard, Edgewood, N.M., Ellen Gordon, Chicago, Paul (Diane) Hooper, Lithia, Fla., and Matthew Hooper, Spring Grove; and 11 cousins, Nicole and Ryan Critz, Seth, Elena and Claire Beard, Kyle and Dylan Gordon, and Evan, Emily, Erin and Dominic Hooper. The visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, Crystal Lake. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Aaron Witt officiating.

Victor Aavang, 76, Woodstock, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 7, 1929, on his family's farm in Greenwood, to Almer and Lilly (Schroeder) Aavang. He married his first wife, Ruth Marilyn Aavang, Sept. 6, 1958. He married Betty Ann McSweeney Sept. 6, 2000. He worked on his family's dairy farm in Greenwood all of his life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan, in the early 1950s. He was an avid pinochle player. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; three sons, David Aavang, Greenwood, Michael (Heidi) Aavang and their two children, Christopher and Morgan, McHenry, and Dale Aavang and his three children, Alexander, Laura and Elizabeth, St. Charles; a daughter, Phyllis Aavang and her two children, Nicole and Nicholas, and four foster children, Woodstock; a brother, Rodney (Libbie) Aavang, Greenwood; three stepchildren, Kathleen (Pat) Scanlon and their two children, Beatrice and Patrick, Eugene (Kathleen) McSweeney and their three children, James, Daniel and Thomas, and Keith (Jodessa) McSweeney and their two children, Christopher and Cecelia; his companions, Molly and Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers, Elmer and Clarence; and two sisters, Ethel and Bessie. Visitation was Feb. 13 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held Feb. 14 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Randy Willers officiating.
