Dennis 'Dink' Jerome
HOOPESTON — Dennis "Dink" Jerome, of Hoopeston, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday (July 31, 2002) at his residence, losing a lengthy battle with cancer.
Funeral services: 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 at Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 907 W. Main St. in Hoopeston;
Burial: Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston;
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Jerome was born in Danville Oct. 25, 1954, the son of Miss Patty Hix.
At the age of 5, Dennis was adopted by Ms. Hix's sister and her husband, John C. and Beverly (Hix) Jerome.
Mr. Jerome is survived by his four children, Carroll Wade, Joshua Wayne, Leah Maur'e and Kirah Rochelle, all of the Hoopeston area; two grandchildren, Gage Fouse of Hoopeston, and Aubre Jerome of Laporte, Ind.
Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Beverly Hultman of Hoopeston; and his aunt, Mrs. Patty Anders of Danville.
Graduating from Hoopeston schools in 1972, he began working at Galloway Machine Company, where he became an accomplished machinist and welder — a trade he utilized his entire lifetime.
In 1980, Dennis went to work for Grant Township Highway Department, where he became commissioner, serving in that position for 12 years.
The following years found him operating heavy equipment for various excavating contractors in western Indiana, and eastern Illinois.
He last drove a semi over the road for Central States District of Danville.
Dennis may be best remembered by his lifetime involvement with steam engines.
The purchase of his first steam engine at an auction in Iowa, when he was 17, was the beginning of a legacy that netted him many friends and experiences throughout the country.
Every Labor Day weekend for the past 26 years you would find Dennis and one of his engineers leading the parade and steaming the corn during Hoopeston's Fall Festival.
He was considered one of the best enginemen in the country by several steam engine enthusiasts.
In the early 1980s, flying became Dennis' second love.
Three months after his first plane ride, he and John Norton purchased an old Piper and obtained his private pilot's license, then went on to become a seasoned aviator, flying skydivers, as well as giving many kids and "afeared" adults their first place ride.
His last plane, a rare 1958 Bellanca Cruisemaster, was his pride and joy, right along with the steamers.
Dennis was a 25-year member and Past Master of Star Lodge #709 AF&AM;, a member of Illiana Skydivers, Illiana Antique Power Association, National Threshers Association, as well as being honored by receiving a lifetime membership in the Hoopeston Jaycees.
Virginia J. Porcheddu
Virginia J. Porcheddu, 73, of Parrish, Fla., formerly of Danville, Ill., died Wednesday (July 31, 2002) at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla.
She was born March 16, 1929, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
She moved to Manatee County, from Spring Hill, Fla., three years ago.
She worked as a restaurant hostess in Danville.
She was a member of the Ellenton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Fred Porcheddu of Parrish; two daughters, Cheryl Lee of Oakwood, Ill., and Gayle Meeker of Parrish; one son, Gary Meeker of Ellenton, Fla., one brother, Ross Smith of Sarnia, Ontario; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
Funeral services: 11 a.m. (EDT) Saturday, Aug. 3 at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Mansion Chapel, 1400 36th Avenue E, Ellenton, Fla.;
Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home;
Officiating: Pastor Steve Bruns;
Burial: 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
Minister Marguerite Packnett
Minister Marguerite Packnett was born March 6, 1932, in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of George and Georgia McCoy.
She was formerly married to Isaac Gentry.
A 52-year resident of Danville, she worked as a caterer.
She retired in May 1994 and dedicated her life to studying of the Bible.
Minister Packnett attended St. Augustine Catholic School and graduated from Lincoln High School, in East St. Louis, Ill. .
In September 1949, she moved to Danville, and joined St. James Freewill Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Rev. S.J. Coleman.
She was truly dedicated in her church work as she was church clerk for 18 years, president of the Missionary Society, superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the Mother's Board.
In the fall of 2001, she had a higher anointing on her life as she was called into the ministry.
She was a true prophet from God and used her gift to help and encourage many people.
It was a gift she loved and used to the fullest, touching many lives. .
Minister Packnett loved cooking, missionary work and sharing the word of God with anyone she came in contact with.
At 5:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2002, Minister Packnett went home to be with the Lord at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill.
She leaves her love and legacy with her three children, Zachary Packnett and Lawrence (Debbie) Packnett, both of Danville, and Martha (Harry) Gentry-Redekopp of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; a nephew, Lamar Scott of St. Louis, Mo.; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded by her parents, three sisters and a brother.
Funeral services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the New Life Christian Center, 2105 N. Bowman Avenue;
Officiating: Pastor Joseph Pierce assisted by Elder A.L. Swanigan; Burial: Spring Hill Cemetery;
Visitation: 1-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home with the family present from 6-7 p.m.
Mirella Watson
WESTVILLE — Mirella Watson, 91, of Westville, passed away at 2:28 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 30, 2004) at Provena USMC, Logan campus, emergency room.
Mirella was born July 6, 1913, in Minto, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of the late Alfred and Rosalie (Joly) Birmont.
Mirella married Charles Thomas Watson on Dec. 26, 1933, in Casey, Ill., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1988.
Survivors include: two daughters, Phyllis Snider of Danville, and Char Frazee of Westville; a brother, Alfred (Marian) Birmont of Coal Valley, Ill.; four grandchildren, Susan (Jack) Duez of Danville, Lori (Ken) Finn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Todd (Sherry) Damilano of Westville, and Scott (Beth) Damilano of Danville; six great-grandchildren, Justin (Karen) Duez of Rantoul, Garrett and Taylor Finn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Trevor and Cole Damilano of Danville and Cecelia Damilano of Westville; and one great-great-granddaughter, Hannah Duez of Rantoul.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Marcelle Stimac.
Mirella worked as a seamstress at Rissman and later Windbreaker.
She was a member of the Westville Women's Club, the Women's Sewing Club at Trinity United Church of Christ, was a past Grey Lady volunteer at the former St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Mirella was a founding member of the Kickapoo Depression Glass Club.
Mirella had numerous loves and hobbies including sewing, quilting, gardening, flowers, entertaining the neighborhood ladies on her back porch with cakes, and her famous "Apple Pie"
A celebration of Mirella's life will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Danville;
Burial: St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery in Westville;
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1 at the funeral home;
Memorials may be made in her name to the Westville Public Library Fund.
Joanna H. Stanley
Joanna H. "Jo" Stanley, 84, of Danville, passed away at 9 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 30, 2002) at the Hawthorne Residential Inn.
She was born December 12, 1917, the daughter of the late William and Fern Moore Sams.
She married Willard "Wid" Stanley on April 11, 1938.
He preceded her in death on April 13, 2000.
She is survived by: her daughter, Janna Spurlock of Lansing, Mich.; three grandsons, David Anderson of Lansing, and Stephen Anderson and Daniel Spurlock, both of Newport Richey, Fla.; 15 great-grandchildren; a very dear sister, Betty (Charles) Burg of Cerro Gordo; two nieces, Deborah Boma of Fort Worth, Texas and Rebecca Benson of Lafayette, Ind., and several close friends and neighbors.
Jo worked in naval communications at several military bases during World War II.
After coming to Danville, and raising her family, she worked at St. James Methodist Church from 1964 until 1981.
She served as president of AMBUCS in 1955, past secretary of the March of Dimes and was active in her church and the United Methodist Women.
She enjoyed all types of crafts.
She loved her family and friends.
She especially loved the 15 years of winter she spent with Wid in Wickenburg, Ariz.
Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center;
Officiating: Pastor Russell Smith;
Entombment: Springhill Mausoleum;
Visitation: one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the St. James United Methodist Church.
Lester Snook
WESTVILLE — Lester Snook, 79, of Westville, passed away at 7:40 p.m. Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at his home.
He was born on April 22, 1923, in Westville, the son of William Elmer and Mamie Wagle Snook.
He married Josephine Jones on Oct. 30, 1943, in Tilton.
She survives.
Also surviving: two daughters, Diana (Ron) Harper of Tilton, and Kathy (Chuck) McBee of Westville; a brother, Harvey (Marie) Snook of Westville; a sister, Helen Cheeseman of Danville; two grandsons, Adam (Jamie) Decker of Danville, and Shawn (Amber) Harper, who is stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash.
Mr. Snook was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and his twin brother, Chester.
Lester was a retired Teamster and worked 22 years at Meadow Gold.
He enjoyed fishing, horseshoes and the Cubs.
He especially enjoyed his retirement and his grandsons.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home;
Officiating: Rev. James Blue;
Burial: Sunset Memorial Park;
Visitation: 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the funeral home;

Richard E. Bell
GEORGETOWN — Richard "Dick" E. Bell, 71, of Georgetown, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at Provena USMC, Logan campus.
He was born on April 29, 1931, in Ridge Farm, the son of Irvin and Lurabelle Wilfong Bell.
He married Audrey Jean Pearson on Sept. 2, 1950, in Georgetown.
She survives.
Also surviving: a son, Terry (Shirley) Bell of Warsaw, Ind.; two daughters, Kathy (Terry) Stal and Carol Elliot, both of Georgetown; three sisters, Joy Shepherd of Danville, Betty Bishop of Urbana, and Judy (Dave) Zurlinden of Carmel Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dick retired from General Motors in 1981 after 33½ years of service.
After retirement, he managed a motel for a year and worked for a contractor in Champaign.
He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Georgetown.
He enjoyed keeping his yard and his cars in top condition.
He also loved playing cards with his friends and family.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the First Church of Christ in Georgetown;
Officiating: Steve Rutter; Burial: Georgetown Cemetery;
Visitation 4-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home;

John E. Neild
GEORGETOWN - John E. Neild, 86, of Georgetown, passed away at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at Vermilion Manor Nursing Home in Danville.
John was born on Nov. 22, 1918, in Georgetown, the son of the late Fred and Goldie (Lacey) Neild.
He was united in marriage to Amelia B. Grygiel on Oct. 28, 1941, in Danville.
She preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 1999.
Those who survive him include: his daughter, Frances Goodrum of Georgetown; his brother, Richard "Rip" Neild of Georgetown; his sister, Lucy Jones of Plainfield, Ind.; his grandchildren, Matthew Goodrum of Georgetown, and Carrie (Mark) Mattsey of St. Joseph; his great-grandchildren, Jonathan Goodrum of Hoopeston, and Benjamin Mattsey and Brandon Mattsey, both of St. Joseph.
His parents, one sister and one brother preceded John in death.
After serving in WW II in the U.S. Army, he worked at the VA Medical Center in the Rehab Department, then from there, went to drive a gas truck for DX and finally working for Hyster Company in Danville.
He was a member of the American Legion Dornblaser Post 203 in Georgetown.
John enjoyed gardening, searching for ‘Indian relics', mushroom hunting, woodcarving, and reading.
He cherished his family and friends and was especially fond of spending time with his great-grandchildren.
A celebration of John's life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6 at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home in Georgetown;
Visitation: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 at the funeral home;
Officiating: Father John Paninski and Raymie Gordon.
John will be buried at Danville National Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Dornblaser Post 203 of Georgetown;
Memorials may be made in his name to Vermilion Manor Nursing Home of Danville.
Dr. Karl W. Freivogel
Dr. Karl W. Freivogel, DDS, 90, of Springfield, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 1, 2004) at his residence.
He was born April 5, 1914, in Mascoutah, Ill., the son of William and Hilda Eidman Freivogel.
He married Clarice Murray on Jan. 10, 1939, in Chicago, and she preceded him in death.
Dr. Freivogel was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis.
He practiced dentistry in Mascoutah, and Danville, until retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Danville.
He was a member of Kiwanis Golden K, the Danville Dental Society and a member of the State and National Dental Society.
He is a World War II veteran, serving as a captain in the 406 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in North Africa, Corsica and France.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, Edward Freivogel.
Dr. Freivogel is survived by his son, William Freivogel (wife Caroline) of Chicago; daughter, Nan (husband Ben) Hendrickson of Springfield; four grandchildren, Amy Coxhead, Andrew Freivogel, Josh Freivogel and Sarah Back; and six great-grandchildren, Hadley, Stuart, Sara and Winston Coxhead, and Riis Karl and Anna Freivogel.
He is also survived by a wonderful group of loving caregivers.
Cremation accorded by Cremation Tribute Center.
Private services will be held at a later date.

John ‘Shorty' Wenzel
John Martin "Shorty" Wenzel, 68, of Danville, died at 12:34 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 27, 2004), at his residence.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Pape Memorial Home and Cremations Gardens, 10 E. Williams, Danville, IL;
Officiating: Pastor Drew Mentzer.
A family gathering and visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Pape's.
Memorials may be made to Second Church of Christ, 3350 E. Voorhees, Danville, IL. 61834.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
John was born July 26, 1936, in Saginaw, Mich., to John Charles and Vernice May VanWormer.
He attended school in Saginaw.
He had worked for General Motors in Saginaw, and Danville, from 1966-1991 and had worked part time at Koehn Motors and Sears.
He was a member of the Second Church of Christ.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, NASCAR, rummage sales and auctions and playing the lottery.
John was a loving dad and grandpa and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
John was married to Joan Kay Sweatland, Vivian May Lambert, who preceded him on Oct. 7, 1997, and Marie Reffett Childers, who survives.
Also surviving are the following children, John "Marty" (Lachelle) Wenzel, Jr. of Huron, S.D., Kelly (David) Peterson of Arlington, Texas, Diane I. Johnson of San Diego, Calif., Donald (Debbie) Lewis of Gillette, Wyo., David and Danny Lewis of St. Charles, Mich., Michael (Alma) O'Keefe of Glen Ellen, Ill., Kathy (Larry) Morgan and Linda (Scott) Cook, both of Danville, and Brenda (Kevin) Richards of Covington, Ind.; three brothers, Richard "Dick," Browne, Earl "Joseph" (Lorraine) Wenzel and Thomas (Chris) Wenzel of St. Charles, Mich., 20 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; special friends, Rodney Miller, Randy Nolen, Andy and Patsy Barteck, friends at Koehn-Dodge Motors and Rick Steele.
He was preceded by his parents, grandson, a sister, Charlene Hanson and brothers, Morley, Wylie and Robert Browne.
