KATHLEEN KEATON
Kathleen V. Keaton, 74, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Bethany Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb.
Born March 25, 1929, in Knoxville, Tenn., she was the daughter of Robinson and Nannie (Thompson) Talley. She married George O. Keaton on Sept. 25, 1954, in Rossville, Ga.
Kathleen was employed at the Sycamore Hospital as a licensed practical nurse for more than 25 years.
She is survived by her husband, George; three daughters, Wanda (Stan) Croom of DeKalb, Kim (Gary) Schneider of DeKalb, and Tracey (Michael) Blanchard of Sycamore; two sons, Edward Dupes of Des Moines, Iowa, and Duane (Donna) Keaton of Cape Coral, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Geneva (Hadley) Moore of DeKalb; a brother, R.C. (Ann) Talley of DeKalb; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with Chaplain Daniel S. Penn of Unity Hospice officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be held at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb at a later date. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

SUSAN M. McNEW
Susan M. McNew, 58, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Sycamore, Ill., died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in her home surrounded by her family, after a courageous three-year struggle with cancer.
Born Dec. 11, 1944, in Aurora, she was the daughter of James and Dorothy (Covington) Crosby. She married Gerald "Jerry" McNew on July 8, 1961, in Sycamore.
Susan was a faithful servant to God as a member of the Church of St. Mary's in Sycamore and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Tucson. She was an active member who helped save St. Mary's Catholic School in Sycamore from closing. She gave tirelessly to the needy and homeless through donations of time, food and clothing.
She retired in 1999 from "The Corral" Carl's Mobil Station in Sycamore. She was the day manager for many years. She loved her job and was known for her friendliness by people throughout the community.
Susan is survived by her husband, Gerald, a son, David (Frances) McNew, and a grandson, Mateo, all of Tucson; her brothers and sisters, Mary Schutter of Dallas, Texas, Patricia (John) Weinert of Sycamore, David (Nancy) Crosby of Genoa, Ginger (Glen) Johnson of Tucson, James Crosby Jr. of Bremen, Ga., Sharron (John) O'Brien of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Dottie Hove-Butts (John Butts) of Bloomingdale; her brother- and sisters-in-law, Raymond (Lillian) McNew of Genoa, Doris Hoecherl of DeKalb and Patricia McNew of Rockford; and 36 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an aunt, Elizabeth Crosby.
Her family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice in Tucson for all their help and support.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the Church of St. Mary's in Sycamore, with Fr. Neal McDermott and Fr. Frank J. Timar, M.S.C., officiating. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Sycamore. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a Scripture service being recited at 7:30 p.m.

SOPHIE A. 'SONIA' SORENSEN
Sophie A. "Sonia" Sorensen, 88, formerly of Oak Park and DeKalb, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, at HCR Manor Care Palos Heights East in Palos Heights.
Born April 9, 1915, in DeKalb, she was the daughter of Lithuanian immigrant parents, John and Marian Kasarskis Alilunas.
She attended DeKalb schools and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Northern Illinois State Teachers College in 1934. She taught elementary school in Hebron, North Chicago and Forest Park. In 1955, Sonia married Kenneth E. Sorensen, who was later vice president and chairman of Harza Engineering Co. and president of Harza Engineering Co. International; they lived in Oak Park for many years. She enjoyed the Oak Park Women's Club and Garden Club, and travel. Sonia was a member of St. Edmund Roman Catholic Church in Oak Park.
She is survived by a nephew, John (Gae) Alilunas of Colfax, Wash., and children, Amy and Peter; a niece, Kristine Alilunas Rodgers of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Wilma K. Alilunas of Santa Fe; two cousins, Allyn Sura and Sister Maureen Juozapavicius of Chicago; and numerous other cousins in the Chicago area and Lithuania.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Robert and Leo.
The funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Edmund Church, 188 S. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park. Entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1401 S. Wolf Road in Hillside. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St. in Oak Park.
NYLE GENE UTTERBACK
Nyle Gene Utterback, 72, died suddenly, Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, of heart failure. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, physicist, environmental preservationist, internationally recognized scientist, former Santa Barbara, Calif., city councilman, community advocate, humanitarian and dear friend to many.
Born Jan. 19, 1931, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Nyle was the son of Irvin and Frieda Utterback. He lived in Sigourney, Iowa, a small farming community throughout his childhood. He was very proud of his Eagle Scout achievement. After earning a bachelor of science degree in physics, Nyle completed his doctorate in physics at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in 1957.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathryn Loretta "Kay" Nolin, formerly of DeKalb, Ill.; three daughters, Lynda, Cheryl and Tracy; three sons-in-law, Michael, John and James; seven grandchildren, Whitney, Tommy, Melanie, Maddison, Jacob, Dylan and Hayden; and numerous friends and colleagues whose lives he has touched with compassion, intelligence and integrity. Nyle was characterized by his kindness, tolerance for all people, and for championing the causes of the underdog. Some claimed that he was honest to a fault.
A memorial celebration to honor this extraordinary man will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at the First Congregational Church of Santa Barbara.
As a tribute to Nyle's continual fight to protect Santa Barbara's natural assets for all to enjoy, the family will be erecting a bench in one of Nyle's favorite places to ensure that even more people have an opportunity to stop and reflect on the beauty of the city he loved like a daughter.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made toward this public monument, in care of 718 Willow Glen Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93105, or to the charity of the donor's choice, as Nyle was an avid contributor to many causes for humanity.
GEORGE K. EWING
George K. Ewing, 83, of Lee, Ill., passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at his home.
Born May 8, 1920, he was the son of Raymond and Essie Ewing. He was united in marriage to Viola F. Wathem of Princeton on May 24, 1941; they celebrated 55 years together.
George was a 1939 graduate of Malden High School in Malden. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Air Corps and Army communications system. George worked at and retired from Ideal Industries in Sycamore after 20 years of service from 1963-1983 in the maintenance department. He retired with the title of plant engineer/technician. George enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, baking and refinishing all kinds of furniture. George always kept busy. Everyone loved that he shared the goodies he made. George belonged to the Mason Blue Lodge for 52 years and the Scottish Rites. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
George is survived by his twin daughters, Linda K. Berry and Donna M. Kilbreth, both of DeKalb; three married granddaughters, Dawn Dykes, Cindy Dischler and Angela Gallet; and five great-grandchildren, Tina Coss, Charlie Coss, Angela McCormick, Tonya St. Clair and Tyler Finnell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his parents; five brothers, Clarence, Don-ald, Myron "Bud," Lawrence "Jack" and Gerald, who was 18 months old; twin great-grandchildren Melissa and Adam Gallet; and a son-in-law, Don Kilbreth.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with the Rev. Robert L. Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Prince-ton. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the funeral home.

VIRGINIA HOFFMAN
Virginia Hoffman, 70, of West Chicago, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Central DuPage Hospital.
Born March 8, 1933, in Chicago, she was the daughter of James and Edith (Devlin) Gembeck. She married Bert Goodwin in 1953; he died in 1990.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, sewing baby blankets, painting and composing music.
She is survived by four sons, Bert Goodwin Jr., Patrick (Diane) Goodwin of East Syracuse, N.Y., Michael (Bridgette) Goodwin of Wilmar, Minn., and Joseph Goodwin of West Chicago; three daughters, Susan (Wes) Bartruff of Sugar Grove, Sharon (Ken) Donald of Sycamore and Sandra (Dennis) Vincent of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Jim (Joyce) Gembeck of Sugar Grove and Frank (Verna) Gembeck of St. Charles; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Jaquelyn and Marilyn; a daughter, Sally Goodwin; and two grandchildren, David and Phillip.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at St. John the Baptist Church in Winfield, with Father John Sponder officiating.
Memorials can be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

JESSE R. MOORE
Jesse R. Moore, 75, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb.
Born April 22, 1928, in Sikeston, Mo., he was the son of Elmer and Roxie (Mitchell) Moore. Jesse married Jewell Hicks on April 26, 1946, in Sikeston.
Jesse retired from Anaconda Wire & Cable in Sycamore after 20 years of service. Jesse was a member of the TTC Camping Club and loved to play the guitar and going to bluegrass concerts.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell; three children, Jerald David (Susan) Swanner of Lexington, Okla., Phyllis (Kenneth) Suppeland of DeKalb and Priscilla "Pandy" (Denny) Filz of Puxico, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jerry L. Moore of Sikeston, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
The graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.
GEORGE L. AINSWORTH SR.
George L. Ainsworth Sr., 78, of Redington Shores, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at his home under Hospice Care.
He moved to Florida from his native DeKalb, Ill., in 1969, when he retired after 19 years with the DeKalb Fire Department. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 273 and VFW Post 4256. He was a Methodist and en-joyed fishing. He worked in the maintenance department for the town of Red-ington Shores.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lucille; a son, George L. Ainsworth, Jr.; two sisters, Bernice Brown of Indiana and Betty Lane of Overton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla., has handled arrangements.
GEORGE V. ANDERSON
George V. Anderson, 81, of Malta, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in the emergency room at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb.
Born Aug. 12, 1922, in Kings, he was the son of Walter and Anna (Nelson) Anderson. George married Kathryn Suknaich on Jan. 28, 1948, in DeKalb. George farmed all his life in the DeKalb County area and retired in 1998. He lived in Malta most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific theater during World War II. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb and the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. George attended Rochelle High School.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of Malta, and two sons, Steven Anderson of Portland, Ore., and Roger (Peg Rozhon) Anderson of DeKalb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, May Anderson and Edith Brannon; and a brother, Harold.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Ronan-Moore-Finch Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Pastor Marilyn Hanson of First Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
