PHYLLIS STOWE
Phyllis Louise Stowe, 84, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital in Virginia after a lengthy illness.
Born in DeKalb, Ill., Phyllis graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College with a degree in journalism and subsequently graduated from two secretarial schools.
Her career began in Maple Park, Ill., as the private secretary/assistant to Mr. George Smith, owner and president of Smith Chemical Works. With her husband's insistence to join him at General Electric, she went to work for the Appliance Motor Department in August 1952 as its news editor, a position that was created for her. Later in DeKalb, she became an interviewer, counselor and visiting nurse. She remembered this period as being personally rewarding.
Phyllis was one of the first women in DeKalb to take the "Effective Presentation" public speaking course, winning first place in the final competition.
She transferred with Floyd to G.E.'s Evendale plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she took on the job of Workmen's Compensation for the company. In 1962, she and Floyd transferred to Lynchburg, where she was assigned to the Insurance Benefits Division and continued to work in this department until her retirement in December 1983.
Phyllis joked that the "Stowes always traveled together," driving to G.E. jobs for more than 30 years. Upon retirement, they extensively traveled by R.V. with a daughter, JoAnne, and her husband.
Above her career accomplishments, her main purpose in life was being a loving wife and mother. As friends and family remember, one thing that could never be forgotten was her beautiful smile.
She is survived by two daughters, JoAnne Montgomery and Gayle Stowe, both of Lynchburg; two brothers, Duane Doane of Montana and Bill Doane of Illinois; and six "grandpets" whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd, of 64 years in July 2002; her parents, Francis and Olive Doane; and a younger sister, Faye.
At her request, a memorial service for family only will be conducted at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lynchburg. Interment will take place, along with Floyd, in the family plot in Maple Park at a later date.
