VERNER B. GRANQUIST
Verner B. Granquist, 89, of St. Charles, Ill., passed away peacefully in the morning on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles after a long battle with emphysema.
Verner was born April 15, 1914, one week after his parents came to this country from Sweden. The story of his life was poignantly chronicled in a handwritten history of nearly 100 pages, condensed here for family and friends.
When he was 10, his mother died following surgery. His father, though a skilled craftsman, was compelled to sell their home, auction their belongings and place his two children in a Joliet orphanage. Four weeks later, Verner's father was killed in a streetcar accident. Shortly afterward, Verner's sister was taken home by relatives, but it would be four years before Verner was old enough to be hired out during harvest as farm help. A kind couple kept him on after the corn was in and he stayed there for the next two years.
On Dec. 30, 1933, he was united in marriage to his first wife, Edna Arnhold. Together, they went to work for $35 a month plus a place to live. Four years later, they moved on to better times, managing two farms in the St. Charles area. They moved to Huntley for several years and farmed on shares for 11 years before purchasing their own farm on LaFox Road in 1954. Two years later, Verner was widowed when Edna died suddenly of a heart attack. In 1957, he was united in marriage to Pauline Peterson, and they continued to make their home on the family farm near LaFox. In later years, Verner enjoyed driving a school bus for District 303, St. Charles, from 1975-1984.
Throughout the pages of his history, Verner writes simply and directly of the joys and sorrows of farming; of loving and losing both family and fields; of questioning God, yet trusting his leading. Verner closes his account with these words: "(but I) found out that deep sores do heal with the help of loved ones and good friends."
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pauline Granquist of St. Charles; two sons, David (Marjorie) Granquist of Wasco and Richard (Gloria) Wagner-Granquist of DeKalb; a stepdaughter, Marion Johnson of St. Charles; seven grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Granquist of St. Charles, Mark (Kathryn) Granquist of Geneva, Angela (Darius) Sarhadi of Mesa, Ariz., Richard (Maria) Granquist of Bloomington, Ind., Andrew (Yvonne) Granquist of LaCrosse, Wis., and Sara Granquist and Kevin Granquist, both of Sycamore; three step-grandchildren, Gail, Debbie and Jeff; five great-grandchildren, Dustin, Christopher, Matthew, Katie and Kyle; a sister, Dorothy Tornberg of St. Charles; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Edna.
The funeral service will be held on his 90th birthday at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Grace Lutheran Church, 5N600 Hanson Road in Lily Lake. Verner was a member of the church for many years. The Rev. Ernst Rex will officiate. Friends will share coffee and luncheon immediately following, with cemetery committal services scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at West Batavia Cemetery on Route 31 in Batavia. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials in his name can be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake and can be mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
