Rita A. Carlson
A funeral Mass for Rita A. (Turner) Carlson (nee McGuire), 79, of Eagle River, Alaska, formerly a resident of Arlington Heights for 46 years, was celebrated Feb. 2, 2001 at St. James Church, Arlington Heights. born Nov. 29, 1921, in Springfield, Ohio, she died Jan. 26, 2001 at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.
Mrs. Carlson had moved to Chicago as a young child. Her childhood in the “big city” was busy and full with her mother and nine siblings.
She married Elmer J. Turner after World War II and they raised their children in Arlington Heights. Her first priority was her children and family, but she also worked in various office positions, served as an election judge, and was active with numerous community groups. In addition, she was an active member of St. James Church.
After her husband died, she married Elmer R. Carlson. The Carlsons also lived in Arlington Heights, where they enjoyed playing cards, socializing and later traveling worldwide after her retirement from United Airlines.
Following Mr. Carlson’s death, Mrs. Carlson made the decision in 1996 to move to Alaska to be near her children and grandchildren living in the Chugiak/Eagle River area.
As a devoted grandmother, she loved attending any and all of her grandchildren’s games, events, concerts and many other activities. In her later years, she learned to swim at the Chugiak High School Senior Swim and she thoroughly enjoyed the ever-changing and majestic vistas of Alaska. She uniquely touched the lives of all with whom she came in contact. Her zeal and zest for life, her optimism and positive outlook touched everyone. She will be remembered as the family matriarch with a feisty, sassy, Irish sense of humor that infected them all.
Mrs. Carlson is survived by her children, Linda (Chuck) Landers of Eagle River, Debbie (Bob) Ellers of Eagle River, Matthew J. (Cindy) Turner of Elk, Wash., Tom (Mary) Turner of Chugiak, Richard (Christine) Carlson of Chicago, Judy (Ed) Olson of Yorkville and Joan (Al) Gardner of Springfield, Ill.; grandchildren Sean and Ryan Landers, Matthew S. Turner, Rita and Kelly Turner, Jeremy Eubanks, Julia, Liz and Katie Turner, Kristin and Erika Ellers, Kelly King, Karri Grougren, Kathy Ahern, Michael Olson, Julie Hixson, Susan Godfrey and Zachary Gardner; and a sister, Joan Vojsek.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer J. Turner and Elmer R. Carlson; her parents, James and Mary McGuire; and seven brothers and sisters.
Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery, River Grove. Contributions in her memory to one’s favorite charity would be appreciated.

David A. Fernquist
Funeral services for David A. Fernquist, 35, of Rolling Meadows were held Feb. 3, 2001 at Congregational United Church of Christ, Arlington Heights. born Dec. 10, 1965, in Chicago, he died Jan. 26 in Chicago.
Mr. Fernquist attended William Rainey Harper College and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Bruno J. Jacobs
A funeral Mass for Bruno J. Jacobs, 84, a resident of Arlington Heights for 46 years, was celebrated Feb. 5, 2001 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights. born July 10, 1916, in Chicago, he died Feb. 2.
Mr. Jacobs is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian; three sons, Paul, Peter and Perry; two daughters, Patricia Hoar and Pamela Wuich; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edward.
Burial was in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines. Masses are appreciated.

Delores Karavidas
Longtime Girl Scout volunteer Delores Karavidas (nee Howser), 67, of Arlington Heights died Jan. 29, 2001 at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights. She was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Shawnee, Okla.
A former insurance underwriter, Mrs. Karavidas had also been a devoted member of the Arlington Heights Woman’s Club since 1984. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the USA Illinois Prairie Girl Scout Council, where she was active in lead
Mrs. Karavidas is survived by her husband, Charles, whom she married March 24, 1964; three children, John (Sandy) of Oakwood Hills, Connie of Arlington Heights and Steve (Melissa) of Lake Zurich; two aunts, Roma J. Flynn of Lake Barrington Shores and Marcia J. Jones of Gurnee; and her father, Gene Kopp of Okeechobee, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Comella Kopp (nee Jones).
Memorial services were held Feb. 3 at the Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., Arlington Heights.

Patricia M. Leonard
Patricia M. Leonard, 67, a resident of Arlington Heights for more than 30 years, died Feb. 1, 2001 at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights. She was born Dec. 16, 1933, in Erie, Penn.
Mrs. Leonard was a member of St. Edna Catholic Church, Arlington Heights. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, James D., whom she married May 7, 1955; a son, Dennis of Arlington Heights; two daughters, Patricia (Paul) Wander of Arlington Heights and Jean (Larry) Sullivan of Palatine; grandchildren Jessica Sullivan, Sara, Katelyn and Michelle Wander; and a dear friend, Jean Theis.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 5 at St. Edna Church, followed by burial in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine.

Adeline E. Maringer
Adeline E. Maringer (nee Barnick), a 30-year resident of Arlington Heights, died Jan. 29, 2001 at her home. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago, followed by interment in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines.
Mrs. Maringer was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church for 60 years. She worked in the bindery publications business for more than 43 years and loved every minute of her labors.
She was a lifelong Cubs fan and an avid Bison and Huskie supporter. A member of TOPS for decades, she was a proud graduate to KOPS, and was also a dedicated member of St. Edna’s Young at Heart Club.
She was a volunteer at the Lutheran Home and Services for the Aged for many years. In 1988 she was named Volunteer of the Year by the Village of Arlington Heights.
She was the dear wife of 40 years to the late Erlan E., whom she married Nov. 1, 1930, in Chicago.
She was the devoted mother of Jackie (Ken) O'Rilley of Arlington Heights and Bernette (the late Bruno) Ryza of Elgin; the cherished grandmother of Shelley (Jim) Noyce of West Des Moines, Iowa, Bruce (Karen) Ryza of Crystal Lake, Bob (Kathleen) Ryza of Elgin, Pat (Jennelle) O'Rilley of Huntley and Kelley (fiance Paul Pataky) O'Rilley of Arlington Heights; the beloved great-grandmother of Jaime, Lindsay, Bobby, Keeton, Natasha, Heaven, Rickey, Madison, Bobby, Bailey and Shaelyn; and the loving sister of Hattie Debs of Chicago, Lorraine Tappa of Davenport, Iowa, and Elsie Behm of Gig Harbor, Wash. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Marion L. Roper
Funeral services for Arlington Heights resident Marion L. Roper (nee Blume), 72, were held Feb. 7, 2001 at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, Palatine. born April 28, 1928, in Bensenville, she died Feb. 2 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
Mrs. Roper was a 53-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Merle Guild Unit 208 and a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights.
She is survived by her daughter, Delores C. of Arlington Heights; a sister, Bernice (Arthur) Hafferkamp; many nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Lydia Kolpeck and Esther Wessels; and two brothers-in-law, Elmer and Harold.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Carl; a sister, Lorraine Roper; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Wessels.
Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alexian Brothers Hospice House.
Edward J. Sowa
A funeral Mass for Edward J. Sowa, 81, of Prospect Heights, formerly of Arlington Heights, was celebrated Feb. 7, 2001 at St. James Church, Arlington Heights. Interment was private. born Nov. 27, 1919, in Detroit, Mich., he died Feb. 4 at Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines.
Mr. Sowa is survived by his wife, Gladys A. (nee Bogdas); two sons, Carl E. (Linda) of Buffalo Grove and Paul E. (Nanette) of Wheeling; a daughter, Katherine M. of Prospect Heights; grandchildren Debbie (Brian) Starck of Mundelein, Carlin of Buffalo Grove and Adam, Alex and Emily of Wheeling; great-grandchild Joey Rene Starck; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Warne and Lucille Golik.

Stanley Komosa
A funeral Mass for Stanley Komosa, 63, of Mount Prospect was celebrated March 22, 2006 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights. born Jan. 6, 1943, in Poland to Stanislaw and Zofia (née Szczesna) Komosa, he died March 18 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge from complications of a heart attack.
Mr. Komosa was a machinist employed by Gage Assembly in Lincolnwood for more than 20 years. He was a native of Poland, he was a hard worker who enjoyed the outdoors in his free time.
Mr. Komosa is survived by his wife, Barbara (née Jozwicka); two children, Robert and Ann; and his siblings, Mary, Edwarda, Ed and Teresa.
Arlington Heights. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.

Patricia A. Huber
Services for Patricia Ann (née Tomaszek) Huber, 54, of Cary were held March 21, 2006 at the Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows. born July 25, 1951, in Chicago, to the late Robert and Patricia Tomaszek, she died March 15 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.
Mrs. Huber was a former Arlington Heights police officer for many years. She is survived by her husband, Edward; a daughter, Ginger; a stepdaughter, Barbara (Michael) Benedict; two grandchildren, Lauren and Taylor Benedict; and her siblings, Thomas (Alina) Tomaszek, Cindy (Dan) Bundalo and Barbara (Richard) Oszakiewski.
Interment was in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Heights.

Howard L. Speer
Howard L. Speer, 82, of Washington, Ill., formerly of Arlington Heights, died March 14, 2006 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. He was born to Clifford K. and Josephine Rhodes Speer on April 11, 1923.
Mr. Speer was raised in Pekin and East Peoria. He worked for Bell & Howell in Chicago as a machinist for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran. He loved animals, birds, and enjoyed gardening, reading, and antiquing. He was of the Christian Science faith.
Surviving are his sister, Betty Pounder of East Peoria; two nieces, Beverly (Larry) Avery of East Peoria and Nancy Landrith of Pekin; two nephews, Clifford "Butch" of Chillicothe and Robert of Florida; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; seven great-great nieces; and one great-great nephew. He was preceded in death by two brothers, three half-brothers, and one sister.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services were held March 16 at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. The Rev. Walter Wilkins officiated.

George Krueger
Funeral services for George Krueger, 85, of Arlington Heights were held March 21, 2006 at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., Arlington Heights. born May 9, 1920, in Chicago, he died March 17 at the Claremont Rehab & Living Center, Buffalo Grove.
Before retiring Mr. Krueger was a special agent with the Treasury Department and an investigator with the State of Illinois and Cook County. During his retirement he volunteered for AARP in the Tax Aide Program for more than 20 years. He served in the Army during World War II.
His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Irene (née Mack), whom he married Feb. 17, 1945; and his daughter, Christine Krueger of Milwaukee.
Interment was private.
