Roland F. Schaefer
Roland F. Schaefer, 89, a resident Scottsdale, Ariz., and a former resident of Naperville, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Scottsdale Village Square Hospice Center. He was born Jan. 3, 1912, in Boone, Iowa.
He worked for the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 47 years and retired as an engineering manager. He worked on the Project Mercury space program, which put the first U.S. astronaut into space.
He is survived by three children, Barbara (husband Vern) Purpur of Naperville, Norma (husband William) Marcum of Phoenix, and Dr. James (wife Ghislaine) Schaefer of La Mesa, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Trudy; a son, Thomas; an infant granddaughter, Susan Waldow; two brothers, Walter and Edwin; and five sisters, Charlotte Beuthe, Clara Westerman, Ruth Dreier, Lydia Schaefer and Gertrude Napen.
A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1550 Modaff Road, Naperville. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 117 W. Van Buren Ave., Naperville, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.
Interment will be at Chapel Hills Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace.

Martha K. Schweikert
Martha K. Schweikert, 96, a Naperville resident since 1932, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her home. She was born Aug. 30, 1904, in Germany.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening. She volunteered for various organizations and did appraised antiques, including work for the Naperville Heritage Society. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville.
She is survived by two sons, Col. Paul (wife Betty) Schweikert of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., and Carol (wife Inge) Schweikert of Hayward, Wis.; two daughters, Shirley (husband Dean) Burgess of Webster, Wis., and Mardie (husband Bob) Delaney of Stratford, Wis.; a sister, Fridl Ruck of Germany; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents, Heinrich Carl and Theresia (Rusch) Woesch; two brothers; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m.
Interment will take place at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Memorials may be directed to CNS Hospice, 690 E. North Avenue, Carol Stream, IL 60188.

Charlotte J. Slavin
Charlotte J. (Leupold) Slavin, 73, a resident of Plainfield since 1940, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at home. She was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Elwood.
She was a member of Plainfield Congregational Church. She had worked for the Joliet Wallpaper Co. and in customer service for the Armour-Dial Co. in Chicago. She also worked for Conrail and Amtrak Railroad in Chicago as a secretary and for Kmart in Naperville as a sales associate. She was an avid crafter and enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by a brother, Harvey Leupold of Plainfield; two nieces, Joy (husband Eli) Beeding of Marble, Colo., and Jean Dahlben of Boston; two nephews, Wayne Leupold of Greensboro, N.C., and Alan (wife Penny) Leupold of Plainfield; several great-nieces, nephews and cousins; and her caregivers, Martin and Caridad Ramos and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank P. Slavin; her parents, Edward and Susan Marie (Christiansen) Leupold; and a brother, Lloyd Leupold.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Overman-Jones Funeral Home, 309 Joliet Road, Plainfield. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Plainfield Congregational Church, 24040 W. Fraser Road, Plainfield.
Interment will be at Plainfield Township Cemetery, Plainfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Plainfield Congregational Church or Joliet Area Community Hospice, 335 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60435.

Nettie Trnka
Nettie Trnka, 93, a 50-year resident of Naperville and formerly of Berwyn, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor in Naperville.
She was a store clerk at Dave's Floral Shop in Naperville. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star Berwyn Chapter No. 529 and was a Past Worthy Matron. The owner of boxer dogs, she enjoyed attending dog shows.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Charlotte Wagner; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Albert.
Visitation will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Adolf-Berwyn Funeral Home, Berwyn, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Stickney.

Adeline A. Valenta
Adeline A. Valenta, 80, of Naperville died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born April 9, 1920, in Berwyn. Formerly of Riverside, she moved to Naperville 15 years ago.
She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville.
She is survived by a son, John (wife Debra) Valenta of Wheaton; a daughter, Patricia (husband Michael) Maxian of Naperville; and eight grandchildren, Tricia, Christopher, Scott, Justin, Kristin and Margaret Valenta and Brian and Elizabeth Maxian.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; a sister, Bess Franek; and a brother, Joseph Zdenek.
A funeral service will begin at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, and proceed to SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville, for a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial.
Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Naperville Humane Society, 1620 W. Diehl Road, Naperville, IL 60563, or Masses would be appreciated.

Leola Marie Walter
Leola Marie Walter, 70, of Rochelle and formerly of Batavia, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at home. She was born April 9, 1930, at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle to Arnold and Clara H. (Koeppe) Berg.
She married Donald A. Walter on May 17, 1951, at Our Lady of Victory Chapel on the naval base in Norfolk, Va. Throughout her life, she had been employed by Jewel, Furnas Electric and Delnor-Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald of Rochelle; three sons, Donald K. (wife D'Anne) Walter of Orangeburg, S.C., David Walter of Chicago and Daniel (wife Christina) Walter of Rochelle; a daughter, Katherine "Kitty" (husband Kevin) Barker of Batavia; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Jim and Christopher Reeve and Benjamin, Kristin, Austin, Shannin and Andrew Walter; and a brother, Frederick (wife Sylvia) Berg of Naperville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Reeve; her parents; a brother, Arnold F. Berg; and a sister, Helen Hartzell.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 7, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rochelle. The Rev. Mark Nordman officiated.
Interment was in River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia.
Memorials may be directed to Ogle County Hospice.
Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle handled arrangements.

Betty Ann (Diehl) Robinson, 43, died Friday, April 23, 1999 at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva. She was born Sept. 17, 1955, in Aurora.

Tony Acquaviva, 75, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Harvey.

Elizabeth M. (Mulligan) Reuland, 86, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at her Naperville home. She was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Homestead, Pa.

Robert J. Zinger, 75, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at ManorCare Health Services in Naperville. He was born June 24, 1923, in Detroit.

Violet (Cominski) Schneider, 77, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora. She was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Fremont, Ohio, to John and Mary Cominski.

Maurice "Ham" A. Hemmingway, 76, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet. He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Fort Scott, Kan.

Spencer R. Griffiths Jr., 83, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. He was born April 8, 1916, in Chicago.

Loretta Cahill, 66, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at the Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. She was born on Feb. 22, 1933, in Chicago.

Melanie O. Breh, 87, died Thursday, April 23, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Northlake. She was born Feb. 25, 1912, in LaSalle/Peru, Ill.

Dino A. DiDomenico, 83, of Glendale Heights and formerly of Naperville died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at home. He was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Chicago.

Daniel J. Burke, 65, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Edward Hospital. He was born Nov. 15, 1933, in East Orange, N.J., to Daniel and Catherine Burke.

Theresa G. Becerra, 78, of Naperville died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at ManorCare in Naperville. She was born Oct. 16, 1920 in Mexico City, Mexico.

Betty Ann Robinson (need Diehl), 43, of Naperville died Friday, April 23, 1999 at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva.

Winnie Inez Lee, 96, of Naperville died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Manor Care Nursing Center in Naperville. She was born July 17, 1902, in Ashland, N.C.
