Hughes Hopewell
Hughes Clayton Hopewell Jr., 73, of Glenview died on Dec. 1, 2003 in Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview. He was a former resident of Evanston, Wilmette and Park Ridge.
Mr. Hopewell was a graduate of the University of Iowa, majoring in commerce, and a member of Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 0170.
His professional career was in sales, primarily advertising sales for MacMillan, Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovitch and Marketplace Publications.
Singing was one of the loves of his life. His avocation began as a youth when he was a boy soprano in the St. Paul of the Lake Episcopal Church Choir in Rogers Park. After his voice matured, he sang in barbershop quartets, church choirs and, most notably, with the North Shore's Gilbert & Sullivan Company, the Savoy Aires. Under the direction of co-founder Frank Miller, he sang many leading roles and served as chair of the board.
In recent years, he was active at the First Congregational Church of Wilmette, singing in the choir and serving on its boards. He served as adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 3; organized alumni gatherings for Sullivan High School and received his 50-year Masonic pin from the Wilmette Park Masonic Lodge 931. He was an Eagle Scout and a past master of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his children, Cherie Eno of Des Plaines, Patricia (Robert) Duda of Chicago, Mary Micotto of Park Ridge, Catherine Hopewell of Madison, Wis., and Daniel Hopewell of Chicago; stepson, Richard Grayson; grandchildren, DeAndra Cuevas, Danielle Duda, Joseph and Angela Micotto; and great-grandson, Ryan Cuevas.
A Masonic service and memorial service were held on Dec. 3, 2003 in the First Congregational Church of Wilmette. Burial was private.

Fae A. Lohn
Fae A. Lohn, nee Kohr, 92, of Bridgeview, a member of Oak Park Temple, died Nov. 22, 2003.
Mrs. Lohn was born Oct. 10, 1911, in Philadelphia.
She was the wife of the late Jack; mother of Ardeth Weintraub, Sandra (the late Hyman) Greenfield, Allan (Joan), Elayne (the late Michael D.) Ihnchak and Enid (Rolf) Kleiner; grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother of many; and sister of Hyman (Bernice) Goldberg.
A memorial service was held Nov. 25, 2003 in Oak Park Temple and funeral arrangements were made by Lloyd Mandel Levayah Funeral Home, Skokie.
Interment was in Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park.

Doris Sticken
Doris V. Sticken, 85, a homemaker from Deerfield, died Nov. 28, 2003 in Omaha, Neb.
Mrs. Sticken was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Helena, Okla. she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and her son, Walter Jr.
She is survived by her children, Joyce Alsobrook of Casper, Wyo., LaVerne (Sam) Curly of Bellevue, Neb.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Elaine Leonard of Copperas Cove, Texas.
Funeral services were Dec. 3, 2003 at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, Highland Park. Interment was in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines.
John Balogh
John A. Balogh, 79, died at his home in Chicago’s Edison Park community on Jan. 22, 2003 after a lengthy battle with cancer. born in Chicago, June 22, 1923, he had served as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He worked for more than 35 years for the Chicago Park District. In 1954 he started as an instructor at Independence Park and at Humboldt Park, where he taught sailing. From 1965 until his retirement in 1989, he worked at Norwood Park Field House, where he ran the popular craft shop classes.
He and his late wife, Kathleen M. “Peg” Balogh, moved to Edison Park 48 years ago. Mrs. Balogh, who was active as an officer in the Edison Park Community Council, died in 1998.
Mr. Balogh is survived by his children: John (Linda) of Morton Grove, Thomas (Marianne) of Michigan, Kathleen of Edison Park, Daniel of Park Ridge, Eileen (Frank) Mastro of Des Plaines, Edward (Mary) of Rosemont, Robert (Lori) of Round Lake, James (Kristen) of Elgin; 20 grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ann (Michael) Likvan of Niles and William C. (Jane) Balogh of Itasca. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph.
Visitation was held Friday at the M.J. Suerth Funeral Home, Chicago. His funeral Mass was held Saturday at St. Juliana Catholic Church, celebrated by the Rev. Donald J. Ahearn, pastor emeritus, assisted by Deacon Bob Ryan. Interment was at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles.
Juliet Bell
Juliet D. (nee Rolle) Bell, 91, of Chicago’s Edison Park community, died Jan. 19, 2003 at Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago.
Born in Chicago Dec. 19, 1911, Mrs. Bell had also lived in Evanston and Wilmette.
Among her jobs, she had worked as a broadcast assistant to on-air personalities at NBC-TV Channel 5 in Chicago. She was a long-time member of the Rogers Park Presbyterian Church. She was active in the American Association of University Women, the Evanston Woman’s Club and her sorority, Alpha X Delta. She had traveled extensively, and took great joy in living life to the fullest.
She is survived by her husband, John E. Bell. She was the sister-in-law of Richard (the late Catherine) Bell and the late Wayne (the late Jane) Bell; the aunt of Wayne Jr. (Barbara Helen) Bell, Barbara Ann Bell and Sharon Ann Lewis; and great-aunt of Kevin and Laura.
Visitation was held Jan. 22, 2003 at the M.J. Suerth Funeral Home, Chicago. Her service was held Jan. 23 at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Powell, pastor of Rogers Park Presbyterian Church. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials were suggested to the Rogers Park Presbyterian Church, 7059 N. Greenview, Chicago IL 60626.
Bernice Bonin
Bernice S. Bonin, 88, of Chicago died Jan. 21, 2003 at the Harmony Nursing Home in Chicago. born in Chicago Sept. 19, 1914, she had worked as an assembler for Bally Manufacturing.
She is survived by her brother, LeRoy (Madeline) Bonin and sister Margaret (the late Kenneth) Howard; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother and several sisters: Raymond (the late Louise) Bonin, Helen (the late Stanley) Szyszka, Myrtle and Dorothy Bonin.
Visitation was held Jan. 23 and 24 at the M.J. Suerth Funeral Home, Chicago. Her funeral Mass was Saturday at St. William Catholic Church, Chicago. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.
Stanley Czarny
Stanley A. Czarny, 72, of Chicago’s Northwest Cumberland area, died Jan. 19, 2003 at Resurrection Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Park Ridge. He had worked as a sales representative for store fixtures. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
His funeral Mass was held Jan. 22, 2003 at Our Lady Mother of the Church, Chicago. Entombment was at St. Adalbert Mausoleum, Niles. Funeral arrangements were by Cumberland Chapels, Norridge.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; sons Robert (Anna) and Kenneth (Marcella) Czarny; and three grandchildren.
Robert D. Mueller
Robert D. Mueller, a 50-year resident of Glenview, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Hospice of the North Shore in Skokie. He was 67.
He was the husband of Pioneer Press Food Editor Carol Mueller.
Mr. Mueller, a third generation plumbing contractor, was in business in Glenview for his entire career. Heowned Mueller Plumbing Co., a firm specializing in custom residential and commercial work, which he ran with his son Rob. He was known by his customers, employees and colleagues for his honesty, dependability and dedication to quality.
A longtime member of the Glenview Chamber of Commerce, he also belonged to the Northern Illinois Plumbing Contractors Association, where he served many years as treasurer, and to the Illinois and National Associations of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors.
Mr. Mueller served eight years as a Naval Reservist at the Glenview Naval Air Station and belonged to the Hangar One Foundation. He was an active member of Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield for 32 years, during which time he served several terms on the church council and was vice president of the congregation. He also sang in the choir, participated in Lenten dramas and served on various committees.
As he prepared for retirement, Mr. Mueller spent more time on the golf course and rekindled his interest in fishing, taking trips to Canada with business and church friends. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending weekends with his children and grandchildren at the family summer cottage, where he took special pleasure in making pancakes for his grandchildren for breakfast.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Glenview; his sons, Rob (Cathy) and Eric (Eleni); and his grandchildren, Bobby, Becky and Daniel Mueller.
Interment was private. A memorial service was held Saturday at Lutheran Church of the Ascension, 460 Sunset Ridge Road (southwest corner of Willow and Sunset Ridge) in Northfield.

Erna Orlet
Erna B. (nee Greiner) Orlet, 89, of Elk Grove Village, formerly of Park Ridge and the Northwest Side of Chicago, died peacefully in her home on Jan. 8, 2003.
Mrs. Orlet was born in Brackwede, Germany.
Preceded in death by her husband, Wilhelm, she is survived by her daughter, Brigitte (Ralph) Sandstrom of Elk Grove Village; grandchildren, Christine (Jeff) Hertzberg of Elk Grove Village and Spencer Hart of Homewood; and sisters, Hannelore (Friedmann) Broker and Margaret Greiner.
Funeral service was conducted on Jan. 11, 2003 in Northwest Fellowship Church. Burial was in Irving Park Cemetery, Chicago.
Arrangements were handled by Olson Burke/Sullivan Funeral Home, Chicago.
Louis Provenzano
Louis Provenzano, 67, of Harwood Heights, died Jan. 20, 2003 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
He had worked as an engineer in the city water department. He had served as president of the Burgis Society and was active with other Italian-American organizations. He was a member of the Friends of the Oriole Park Library.
His funeral Mass was held Friday at Divine Savior Catholic Church, Norridge. Burial was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside. Funeral arrangements were made by Cumberland Chapels, Norridge.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; children Vincent (Mindy) and Grace (Mario) Balducci; and grandson Mario.
Another son, Joseph, who preceded him in death, was a long-time employee at the Oriole Park Library Branch in Chicago. A scholarship is presented in his name each year by the Friends of the Oriole Park Library.
Rita Rooney
Rita E. Rooney, 71, of Chicago’s Northwest Cumberland area, died Jan. 16, 2003 at her home. She had worked as a pianist and church organist for more than 50 years.
Her funeral Mass was held Jan. 18, 2003 at Our Lady Mother of the Church, Chicago. Burial was at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines. Arrangements were made by Cumberland Chapels, Norridge.
Mrs. Rooney was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by her children John (Kimberly), James (Victoria) and Mary Ann Rooney; and five grandchildren.
Bernice Evans
Bernice A. Evans, 89, of the Higgins-Harlem area of Chicago, died on April 13, 2001 in St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
Mrs. Evans had worked as an office manager for a zipper manufacturer.
Preceded in death by her husband, Harold, she is survived by her sons, Lawrence (Cheryle), James and Gary (Darlene); and grandchild, Elizabeth.
Visitation was in Kolbus Funeral Home, Chicago. Burial was private.
