Richard Swenson
Richard B. “Dick” Swenson, 77, of Lake Bluff, died Dec. 25, 2001 in Lake Bluff.
Mr. Swenson was born March 9, 1924, in Chicago, the son of the late Samuel R. and Etta Swenson of Evanston.
He graduated Evanston Township High School in 1941, served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, and attended Purdue University for three years, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Before his retirement in 1989, Mr. Swenson was vice president of Midwestern Tool Co. in Chicago, then worked for Spiral Step Tool in Elk Grove Village as a mechanical engineer.
He is survived by his children, Karen H. Swenson of Concord, Calif., and Derek R. Swenson of Madbury, N.H. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia A. “Jan” Swenson; and his sister, Phyllis S. White of Evanston.
Visitation was Jan. 3 at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home in Highland Park. Graveside services were Jan. 4 at Lake Forest Cemetery.

Michael J. Acello
Michael John Acello, 76, of Highland Park died Feb. 6, 2002 in his home. He was born May 25, 1925 in Highwood and was a lifelong resident of Highland Park.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired TV repairman and custodian at New Trier High School.
Survivors include his children, Raffaela “Rachael” (Lucien “Butch”) Depyper of Highland Park and Michael (Hana) Acello of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother and two sisters.
Graveside services were held Feb. 9 in Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
Stefanie Duffy
Stefanie Duffy, 89, of Vernon Hills died Feb. 1, 2002 in her home.
She was born Dec. 16, 1912, in Southbridge, Mass., and was a graduate of Fitchburg State Teachers College in Fitchburg, Mass., where she was a star basketball and field hockey player.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Thomas L. Duffy; children Dr. Thomas M. (Rosemary Duffy) of Northbrook, Robert (Peggy) Duffy of Kansas, Stephen (Joan) Duffy of Evanston and Jan Duffy of Vermont; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Philip (Carolyn) Kozyra.
She was preceded in death by her son Peter (Kathy) Duffy.
Funeral services were Feb. 5 from McMurrough Chapel, Libertyville.
Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph Church in Libertyville.
Interment was in Fort Sheridan Cemetery in Highwood. It was requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the St. Joseph Church endowment fund, 121 E. Maple St., Libertyville IL 60048.
Florence E. Frederick
Florence E. Frederick, 83, of Skokie died Jan. 23, 2002 at the Swedish Retirement Association in Evanston.
Ms. Frederick was a commercial artist and longtime member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Skokie.
She is survived by a sister, Grace Perry of Evanston, formerly of Skokie, and cousins Phyllis Blodgett and Ruth Loos.
Visitation was Jan. 25 at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie. A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 26 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Skokie.
Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie.

Minnie J. Hawkinson
Minnie J. Hawkinson, nee Johnson, 95, died Feb. 5, 2002 at Beulah Land Christian Home in Flanigan, Ill.
A longtime resident of Evanston, Mrs. Hawkinson was born Sept. 20, 1906 in Boden, Sweden. She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Evanston.
Mrs. Hawkinson was preceded in death by her husband, Willy Hawkinson.
Survivors include her son, John (Sharon) Hawkinson, brother Hildur Westlund and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 8 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Interment took place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie.
Norma L. Lahger
Norma L. Lahger, 82, a longtime resident of Evanston, died Feb. 8, 2002 in Tustin, Calif.
Mrs. Lahger was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Philadelphia.
She belonged to the Unitarian Church of Evanston for many years and was a well known Realtor in the area.
Mrs. Lahger was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick.
Survivors include her son, Kurt Lahger, daughter Melissa Verdugo, brother Jack O'Connell and two grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Feb. 13, 2002 at McNerney’s Chapel in San Pedro, Calif.
Barbara C. O'Neal
Barbara Catherine O'Neal, 56, of Evanston, died Jan. 26, 2002 at Evanston Hospital.
Mrs. O'Neal was born April 3, 1945, in Chicago. She was a nurse’s aide at the Over the Rainbow Association.
She is survived by her mother, Catherine Hill, step-father Mitchell Hill of Evanston, and her children, Sandra, Linda, Marshaund and Charles. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Feb. 1 at the Evanston Church of God.
Interment took place at Sunset Memorial Lawns in Northbrook on Feb. 2.
Marianna Pollard
Marianna Perrin Pollard, 81, a school social worker for nearly 35 years, died Feb. 6, 2002 at the Bradford Terrace Convalescent Center in Milwaukee, where she had spent the holidays with her brother.
Ms. Pollard dedicated her professional life to helping children, initially with the Cook County Welfare Department, then with the Chicago Psychiatric Institute, and from 1956 until her retirement with the Chicago Public Schools.
At an age when many professional women had traded careers for luncheons, bridge games and fashion shows, she continued to help families who lived in the Robert Taylor Homes.
She spent her own childhood in Evanston, where she was born on Dec. 8, 1920, the second child and only daughter of Dr. William B. Pollard, Sr. and Mary Perrin Pollard.
She attended Foster Elementary School, Haven Junior High School and Greater Evanston Township High School, where she played cello in the orchestra. She graduated in 1939.
She continued a family tradition when she enrolled at historically black Prairie View A & M University near Houston, where her uncle Sam Taylor coached the Panthers football team.
She graduated in 1943 with a major in social work, and subsequently received a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University in Chicago.
A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she was active in the Theta Omega Chapter for years.
A lifelong Methodist, she was an early member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Evanston, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano.
She loved music, and for decades held season’s tickets to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She also loved to travel and fearlessly safaried in East Africa and visited Scandinavian and other European countries.
Four years ago at the age of 77, she took a rigorous trip to China and proudly tackled the Great Wall in Beijing.
An avid mystery reader, she picked up a few detective skills, which she used in pursuing her family’s genealogy.
Ms. Pollard is survived by brothers, William B. Pollard Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Dr. Randle E. Pollard of Milwaukee; two sisters-in-law, Helen and Mildred; eight nieces and nephews and their spouses and children; first cousin Joy Taylor Gilliam of Hopewell, Va. and many Perrin relatives in Evanston.
Visitation and funeral service were held Feb. 11 at Woodlawn African Methodist Episcopal Church in Chicago.
Edith G. Russell
Edith G. Russell, 87, of Austin, Texas, and formerly of Evanston and Wilmette, died Feb. 5, 2002.
Mrs. Russell was a resident of the Summit of Westlake Hills for the past 10 years.
She is survived by her son, Guy Saunders of Lakeway, Texas; daughter Pamela Saunders of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandsons; and a niece and nephew.
Funeral services were held Feb. 9 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin.
