JoAnn Leoni
A memorial service for JoAnn (Johanna) W. (nee Ratajczyk) Leoni, a resident of Evanston for 44 years, is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. April 29 in the Hartkey Room at St. Athanasius School, 1615 Lincoln St.
Mrs. Leoni died April 19, 2001 in the hospice unit at Evanston Hospital. She was 69.
Born Sept. 29, 1931, in Wilmette, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her son, Marty Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Marty; sons Jeff, Tom and Greg;daughters Suzi and Gail; 13 grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Jean Meier
Jean Meier of Beach Park, Ill., a native and former resident of Evanston, died April 21, 2001 at her home. She was 76.
She was born Jan. 25, 1925.
Mrs. Meier was employed as a secretary.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters, Roberta Pressman and Marie Gordon.
Survivors include daughter Meg (Steve) Jackson; son Dan (Paula); two grandchildren; sisters Dorothy, Joy, Wanda and Marian; and brother Bud Dudick.
Funeral services and interment were private.
Nancy Olson Ross
A memorial service for Nancy Olson Ross, 80, of Barrington was held April 20, 2001 at Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, who died on April 15.
Mrs. Ross graduated from New Trier Township High School and Northwestern University and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
An accomplished pianist, she had a lifelong passion for music. To the end she displayed great inner strength and dignity and maintained her zest for life, including volunteer work at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, and a delight in travel.
Mrs. Ross is survived by her children, Nancy (Michael) Fluhr, Wendy (John Fernstrom) Steffen and W. Peter (Beth) Steffen III; a brother, Charles Willard (Cynthia) Olson III; and a grandson, Sean M. Steffen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Playfair Ross; parents Charles Willard and Lady Olson; and a sister, Lady Margaret Olson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the American Cancer Society, 100 W. Palatine Road, Palatine IL 60067.
Arrangements were made with Davenport Family Funeral Home, Barrington.
Mildred Sandstrom
Mildred E. Sandstrom, a longtime resident of Evanston, died April 22, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
Mrs. Sandstrom was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Axel T.
Survivors include daughter Karen (Michael) McKinney; son William B.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother William (Jenny) Bawcombe of Texas.
Funeral services and interment were private.

Helen Thomson
Helen (nee Perkins) Thomson, a resident of Evanston since 1959, died April 13, 2001 at Evanston Hospital. She was 88.
Born March 21, 1913, in Pittsburgh, she was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work.
Mrs. Thomson was a caseworker at the Cradle adoption agency from 1963-64, and director of the outpatient and social service department at St. Francis Hospital from 1966 to 1976.
She was the author of two books. “The Successful Stepparent,” which was published in London and in paperback in the United States, was awarded the American Child Study Association’s Citation of Merit. “Murder at Harvard” was published in 1971 and received an award from the Friends of Literature in Chicago.
At the time of her death, she was working on a third book about Mary Surratt, who was involved in the plot to murder Abraham Lincoln.
When her children were small, Mrs. Thomson wrote numerous articles for such publications at Parents magazine and Today’s Health.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry.
Survivors include daughters Jean Runkle of Newburgh, Ind., Nancy Reitze of Pasadena, Calif., Eleanor Thomson of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Mary Louise Thomson of Evanston; and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held, with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie.
Dr. Wilfred Wise
Dr. Wilfred Wise, a longtime resident of Evanston, died April 11, 2001 in Evanston. He was 82.
He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Toronto, he entered a cardiac research program at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.
During World War II, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and managed a hospital at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis.
Dr. Wise practiced internal medicine in the Chicago area for five decades. He was on the staff of Michael Reese Hospital and later St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Among other doctors, he was known for his success in managing patients suffering from heart disease, as well as diabetes, in an era when today’s high-tech tools were not available.
He enjoyed gardening, chess, bridge, reading and classical music.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet; sons Stephen, Robert (Izione Silva) and William; daughters Elizabeth (Robert Young) and Judith; five grandchildren; his mother, Eva Wise; and sister Ruth (Mark) Speyer.
Funeral services were April 15 at Beth Emet Synagogue in Evanston, with interment in Shalom Memorial Park, Palatine.

James Albertson
James Albertson, a resident of Buffalo Grove for 30 years and formerly of Evanston, died April 10, 2001 in Elk Grove Village. He was 69.
He was born June 19, 1931, in Lakeworth, Fla.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Albertson worked for Rustoleum Corp. and Washington National Life Insurance Co.
A Mason, he was a member of the Evanston Masonic Temple and Arlington Heights Temple. He also was a member of the Boy Scouts of Evanston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane L.
Survivors include son Steven (Jody Reeme) and sister Josephine Brooks (Leo) LaCroix.
Funeral services were held April 14 at First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights. Interment was private.

Richard S. Barnes
A memorial service for Richard S. Barnes, a resident of Evanston for 27 years and prominent Chicago-area book dealer, is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 12 in the Elliott Chapel of the Presbyterian Homes, 3200 Grant St., Evanston.
Mr. Barnes, 87, died April 29, 2001 at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie.
Born April 9, 1914, in Long Island, N.Y., he lived in Connecticut during his childhood and moved to Chicago in 1950.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in history from Harvard University, a master’s from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate from Yale University.
Mr. Barnes open his first bookstore in Chicago, on Wells Street. In the 1970s, his shop moved to Foster Street in Evanston, where he concentrated on scholarly books and did his most of his business with libraries around the world.
Aside from his books, he was a great fan of baseball, golf and his three Yorkshire terriers.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Watkins. Survivors include his second wife, Patricia (nee Nichol); son Roderic of Niles; stepdaughters Deb (Rens) Sherer and Sandra (Charles) Brown, both of Evanston; stepsons Nick (Elizabeth Brown) Bothfield of Lake Forest and Hank (Elizabeth) Bothfield of Dodgeville, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and sisters Rosemary Atkins, Louise Hall and Elizabeth Bird of Sun City. Ariz.
