Tim Dekin
Memorial services for Tim Dekin, 58, of Wilmette, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church, 1255 Willow Road. Mr. Dekin, a poet and teacher, died March 23, 2001.
Mr. Dekin served in the U.S. States Air Force from 1960 to 1964.
Mr. Dekin came to this area in 1984 to teach creative writing at Northwestern. He also then taught at Loyola.
His early career as a writer included a prestigious Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. In 1987 he won an Illinois Arts Council fellowship. His previous published work included the book “Winter Fruit” (1982) and two poetry books. He also published fiction in TriQuarterly magazine.
His book of poems, “Another Day on Earth,” will be published by TriQuarterly Books, Northwestern University Press, in 2002.
Mr. Dekin was well-known for his wry, self-deprecating sense of humor. He greatly enjoyed fly-fishing in the rivers of Michigan and Wisconsin.
His forthcoming book of poems is filled with keen perceptiveness of nature and his fellow human beings, and also with a calm wisdom of acceptance and loving kindness.
In one poem from that book, he writes that the angler standing beside a river realizes he will have to “Become invisible/Like St. Francis, (and) give away/Totally his fears, hopes, pleasures, guilts/With nothing promised in return/Whereby the fox and the tortoise/Fear him no more,/And the perfect blue jay sky turns more blue.”
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Hamrick Dekin and a son Joseph Dekin both of Wilmette; and his son by an earlier marriage, Samuel Dekin, who lives in California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and June Dekin; a sister; and two brothers.
Andrew Norris East
Memorial services for Andrew Norris East are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. May 18 at The Kenilworth Union Church. Mr. East, 40, died April 24, 2001 in his Denver home.
Mr. East, who was born in Evanston, was a graduate of New Trier East High School, and Regis College in Denver.
Mr. East was an independent contractor in Denver and named his business Norris Construction, in admiration of hs maternal grandfather, the late Walter Norris of Glencoe. A master craftsman he was an interior trim carpenter for custom built homes throughout Denver.
Mr. East was known as Andy growing up and as Drew while working for Vail Associates as a lift operator after college.
He was an Eagle Scout and was a member of the Denver Barbarians Rugby Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen M. East; 6-year-old twins, William O. and Elizabeth P.; his grandmother, Rachel B. Norris of Evanston; his father, Marvin R. East of Denver; two sisters, Melissa C. East of Denver, and Lydia P. East of Chicago; and a brother, Richard N. East of Alameda, Calif.He was preceded in death by his mother, Betsy Norris East.
Interment will be in at Kenilworth Union Church, where his mother also is buried.
As a fifth-generation Coloradoan, a memorial plaque will be placed in Crown Hill Cemetery with his Colorado ancestors. In Denver, a memorial plaque has also been placed in front of his favorite stool at his favorite pub.
Edith Geuss
Edith (nee Farley) Geuss of Rio Rancho, N.M., a native and former resident of Evanston for 75 years, died April 9, 2001. She was 104.
Survivors include her husband, Richard A.; daughters Vivian Igoe, Adelaide Cycon and Winnifred French; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Wallis S. Hamilton
Wallis S. Hamilton, 90, emeritus professor of civil engineering at Northwestern University, died May 2, 2001 in Rapid City, S.D.
Mr. Hamilton formerly lived in Wilmette and Evanston for more than 50 years.
Mr. Hamilton, who was born Feb. 14, 1911, grew up in Williamsport, Pa. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh in 1935 and 1939. He received his doctorate in 1943 from the University of Iowa.
His professional associations included the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. In 1990, he received the ASCE Hydraulic Structures Medal.
Mr. Hamilton had been a member of the First Congregational Church in Wilmette.
Survivors include his wife, Eva (nee Blichfeldt) Hamilton, of Rapid City; and a daughter, Mary Sue (William) Waxler of Custer, S.D.
Ethel Hersh
Ethel H. Hersh, 94, of Evanston, died May 3, 2001 at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Evanston.
She was born May 7, 1906.
Mrs. Hersh was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving.
Survivors include sons Don (Aya) Harran and Philip (Ann Roberts) Hersh; three grandchildren; brother Joseph (Eileene) Sherriff and Irwin (Dora) Sherriff; and sister Lillian Becker.
Funeral services were held May 7 at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel in Salem, Mass., with interment in Beth El Cemetery, Peabody Mass.

Dorothy LaCasse
Dorothy LaCasse, 80, died April 20, 2001 at her Wilmette home.
Mrs. LaCasse was born Dec. 17, 1920 in Chicago. She was a graduate of Senn High School in Chicago and the University of Illinois. She was a former employee of Illinois Bell Telephone and of the Mather Home in Evanston.
She was a longtime member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Wilmette.
Her husband was the late Larry.
Survivors include her daughters, Jeanne of Evanston and Betsy of Wilmette; her son, Phil of Silverthorne, Colo.; a grandson; her sister, Betty Cantalupo of Northbrook; and a brother, Bill Seifert of Tucson, Ariz.

Margaret Mackey
Margaret Jane (nee Stack) Mackey of Wheeling, a former resident of Evanston, died May 2, 2001 at Holy Family Medical Center in Wheeling. She was 88.
She was born July 2, 1912, in Stillwater, Minn.
Mrs. Mackey was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex C.
Survivors include son James E. (June), daughter Jane (Martin) Maciolek and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 5 in the Addolorata Villa Chapel in Wheeling, with interment in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.

Esther Poholsky
Esther B. Poholsky, 79, of Skokie and Delray Beach, Fla., died April 28, 2001 in Florida.
Mrs. Poholsky and her husband, Harry, helped to found Niles Township Jewish Congregation in Skokie.
In addition to her husband. survivors include daughter April Pryor, son Joel, two grandchildren and sister Doris Albaum.
She was preceded in death by her sister Shirley Wittenstein.
Service was May 2 at The Piser Chapel in Skokie.
Interment was in Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights.

Gilbert Reeves
Gilbert K. Reeves, a resident of Evanston for seven years and formerly of Chicago, died May 1, 2001 at Evanston Hospital. He was 77.
Born Aug. 26, 1923, in Chicago, he attended Augustana University and Northwestern University.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Reeves was a partner in the accounting firm of Thomas Havey and Co. in Chicago. He worked in the accounting field for more than 45 years and was known for his expertise in welfare and pension plans.
He served as guest speaker and consultant to the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and was a board member of numerous organizations, including Gateway to Learning, Blind Service Association and American Council for International Education.
He was active in several charitable and civic organizations, including Chicago Uptown Ministries and the Smithsonian Institution.
His lifelong interests included appreciation and participation in music and singing.
Survivors include his wife, Sydell, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service was held May 5 at Grace Lutheran Church in Evanston.
Interment was private.
