James Babbitt
The Rev. Dr. James J. Babbitt, who served at several Methodist churches both as a pastor and as district superintendent, died Aug. 3, 2003 in Orlando, Fla. He was 75.
The Rev. Dr. Babbitt was born June 12, 1928. He received a bachelor's degree from Ball State University, a graduate degree from the Boston University School of Theology and a doctorate from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston.
The Rev. Dr. Babbitt also was a professor of church administration and field education. He was both a founding and life member and served for many years as the president of the Evanston Youth Organizations Umbrella Inc. board.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Joan; children James, Robin, Beth and Barbara; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Sue and Naomi.
Visitation was Aug. 8 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Home in Indianapolis and Aug. 9 at Hagerstown First United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, Ind. Funeral service was Aug. 9 at Hagerstown First United Methodist Church. Interment was in West Lawn Cemetery, Hagerstown.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 in the chapel of Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, 2121 Sheridan Road, Evanston.

Walter A. Burrell
Walter A. Burrell, 77, a resident of Northbrook for 35 years, died July 15, 2003.
Mr. Burrell was born July 23, 1925, in New Jersey and retired in 1991, moving from Northbrook to Sun City West, Ariz. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS LST-531. Mr. Burrell was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in "Operation Tiger," the key pre-invasion maneuver for the Normandy D-Day landings.
He graduated from George Washington University, where he served as president of the Kappa Alpha order and was a member of the Gate & Key Honorary Society. He was employed by McBee Systems, a division of Litton Industries, for 40 years as a sales executive and manager.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen, nee Aitchison; two daughters, Christine (David) Clement of Dallas, and Kari, (Dr. Edward) Taylor of Tulsa; a son, Walter A. Jr. (Angelique) of Naperville; and four grandchildren: Lauren and Courtney of Tulsa, and Hadyn and Chase of Naperville.
A memorial service was held Aug. 12 at the Village Presbyterian Church of Northbrook.

Ron Busse
Memorial services for Ron Busse, 58, of South Barrington, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 16, 2003 at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Road), Barrington. born and raised in Chicago, he died Aug. 8.
Mr. Busse was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War for three and one-half years. He started working for IBM in 1967 and, over his 25-year career with IBM, he rose through technical and management jobs in Chicago, New Jersey and New York. He retired in 1992, returning to this area in 1995.
Passionate about his music, theater and travel, he had a quick wit and an engaging sense of humor, friends and relatives said.
Mr. Busse is survived by his wife, Jody Paine; two children, Bill of Maspeth, N.Y., and Dawn (Jeff) Morlock; three grandchildren; his mother, Pearl, of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Fred (Phyllis); a niece and nephew; and a great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ron.
Memorial visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 16, 2003 at the funeral home.

Brenda Butler
Brenda Olivea Butler (nee Thomas), an Evanston resident and a 1976 graduate of Evanston Township High School, died Aug. 3, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital. She was 45.
Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 5, 1957, in Newport, Conn., to Prue and Fran Thomas.
Mrs. Thomas attended DePaul University and worked for the Signature Group for 15 years, where she was awarded 17 high-performance honors.
Survivors include her mother; brother Prue Christopher Sr. (Tasha); and sister Fannie Mae (George) Carter.
Funeral services took place Aug. 9 at the First Church of God Christian Life Center in Evanston. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Lawns in Northbrook.
Rose Daniels
Rose Carol (nee Jenkins) Daniels, a longtime resident of Evanston, died July 23, 2003 at Evanston Hospital. She was 52.
Born Oct. 19, 1950, in McCormick, S.C., she was a graduate of Evanston Township High School.
Mrs. Daniels was an employee at Pfizer Inc. for 33 years. She was a supervisor in clinical data management.
Survivors include her husband, Harold M. Daniels Sr.; her parents, Fredrick and Juanita Jenkins of Greenwood, S.C.; daughter Michele (David) Daniels-Colbert of Evanston; son Harold M. Daniels Jr. of Evanston; six grandchildren; sisters Geraldine Allen of Greenwood, S.C., and Shannon (Lloyd) Chisholm of Evanston; and brother Michael (Janet) Jenkins of Evanston.
Funeral services were held July 30 at Bethal Baptist Church in South Carolina. A memorial service was held Aug. 7 at the Fresh Anointing Worship Center in Evanston.
Frieda Edmiston
Frieda B. (nee Bartholf) Edmiston of Pasadena, Calif., a former resident of Evanston for more than 45 years, died Aug. 5, 2003. She was 92.
Born Oct. 24, 1910, in Chicago, she was a graduate of Chicago's Lakeview High School and the University of Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Walter A. Sr.
Survivors include sons William A., Dr. Walter A. Jr. and Robert J.; and eight grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Aug. 11 at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.

Frank F. Evans
Frank F. Evans, M.D., 87, a resident of Winnetka, died Aug. 8, 2003 in his home after a long illness.
Dr. Evans was born Jan. 17, 1916 in Chicago.
Prior to his senior year at Hyde Park High School on Chicago's South Side, Dr. Evans took the entrance exam for the University of Chicago's incoming freshman class. He placed in the top ten of the school's nearly 800 applicants and went on to graduate from the college and the medical school without a high school diploma. Voted most outstanding instructor in 1968 by his students at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute, he was a practicing psychoanalyst until his retirement two years ago.
An avid tennis player, Dr. Evans was the founding father of the Winnetka Tennis Association and played well into his 70s, serving as captain of several teams and commissioner of his league. At 78, he won his last association doubles tournament, playing with his 24-year-old son.
He remained a lifelong White Sox fan and an accomplished chess player who, at one time, had the patience to play his opponent by mail. The family's baby grand was often where he could be found in the evening, composing original melodies he played by ear, relatives said. Books and crossword puzzles were two more of his passions. Until recently, he completed at least one or both, every day. He conquered his last New York Times Sunday crossword just three days before he died.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Robinson Evans; two daughters, Judith Evans Linklater of Northbrook, and Michele Evans Mayhew of Fort Pierce, Fla.; three sons Frank F. "Bob" Evans, Jr. of Santa Rosa, Calif., David Howard Evans of Washington, D.C., and Stephen Fraser Evans of Winnetka; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Interment was private.

Chu Chi Fang
Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. today, Aug. 14, 2003, until time of funeral service at 10 a.m. at Chinese Christian Fellowship Church, 3636 Illinois Road, Wilmette for Chu Chi Fang, 85, a resident at the Georgian in Evanston for the past three years, and a Wilmette resident for the preceding 14 years. She died Aug. 9, 2003 at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale.
Mrs. Fang was born Jan. 20, 1918 in Hunan, China. She lived in Japan from 1948-1956 when she came with her husband and daughter to the United States. They lived in Old Bethpage, N.Y. until her husband died in 1986. While in New York, Mrs. Fang was an auditor for the New York City Board of Education. She was active in the diplomatic community. Mrs. Fang was also a very active member at Chinese Christian Fellowship Church in Wilmette.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna Fang (Tai Te) Wu of Wilmette; a grandson; and four siblings, Fred Chu of Greenwich, Conn., Zhu Zheng and Zhu Jiu, both of China, and Zhu Ying of Westmont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tsun Chun Fang.
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie.
George Robert Folds Jr.
George Robert Folds Jr., 79, a resident of Glencoe, died July 10, 2003 in Highland Park Hospital.
Known as "Bob", Mr. Folds was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Evanston and attended Dewey Elementary and Haven Middle Schools, as well as Evanston Township High School.
At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 42 missions with the 370th bomber squadron on a B-24 in the South Pacific. Eventually, he became a first lieutenant in the National Guard.
He also was instrumental in founding the Lauderdale Lakes Volunteer Fire Department in Lauderdale Lakes, Wis., and obtained the first fire truck for the town.
After the war, he was employed by Marshall Field and Co. and married Anne Marie Wyllie. The couple settled in Glencoe.
Later he became the regional manager for Mercoid Corporation and became a founding member of the Instrument Society of America. At the time of his death, he was a partner in MEMECO Sales and Service Corp.
He also was a 32 degree mason in the Glencoe Masonic Lodge, which later moved to Highland Park, and a member of the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anne Marie; his daughter, Elizabeth (Peter) McHenry of Minnetonka, Minn.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas M. Folds of Medford, N.J. and Charles W. Folds of Wilmette; a sister, Camilla Folds Boitel of Wilmette; two nieces and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 16 at St. Elisabeth's Episcopal Church, 556 Vernon Ave. in Glencoe.
Interment will be private.
Dorothy Gabel
Dorothy A. Gabel, 89, of Skokie, died July 25, 2003 at St. Andrew Life Center in Niles.
Mrs. Gabel was an elementary school teacher. She taught at St. Peter Catholic School in Skokie, St. Nicholas School in Evanston and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Glenview.
Survivors include children Dorothy, Medard, Ruth, Betty and Jackie and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Medard, daughter Mary and five siblings.
Visitation was July 28 at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie.
A funeral Mass was celebrated July 28 at St. Peter Church in Skokie. Interment was in St. Peter Cemetery, Skokie.
Mary Jean Gaffigan
Mary Jean Gaffigan, 78, of Lake Bluff, formerly of Evanston and Glenview, died June 28, 2003 in Westmoreland Nursing Center in Lake Forest.
Mrs. Gaffigan was born June 27, 1925, in Eddyville, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in art history. A talented artist and a lover of nature, she was a member of the Glenview Art League and a former volunteer for the Art Institute of Chicago.
Survivors include her three daughters, Lynn (Joseph) Royster of Lake Bluff, Karen (Marc) Takahashi of Cupertino, Calif., and Jacqueline Gaffigan of Baxter Springs, Kansas; two granddaughters; her sister, Helen C. True; and her brother, Marion G. True.
A memorial service was held Aug. 9 at the Union Church, 525 E. Prospect Ave., Lake Bluff. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington VA 22203.
Richard Grieg
A memorial service for Richard Alexander Grieg, a longtime resident of Evanston, was held Aug. 10, 2003 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Evanston. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Evanston Masonic Temple, 1453 Maple Ave.
Mr. Grieg, 73, died July 28 in Evanston.
Born May 18, 1930, in Chicago, he was a graduate of Evanston Township High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Northwestern University, a master's degree in civil engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a law degree from DePaul University.
Mr. Grieg was retired from the practice of engineering and law, but he remained active in many professional, fraternal and religious organizations.
He was a member of St. Luke's Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. (nee Patrick), daughter Heather S. and son Scott B.
