Nellie M. O'Brien
Nellie M. O'Brien (nee Talbot), 96, of Arlington Heights, died Sept. 25, 2003 at Manor Care of Rolling Meadows. She was born May 6, 1907, in Chicago.
Mrs. O'Brien was an office manager for Walgreens for more than 25 years.
She is survived by a son, James W. (Bernice); two sisters, Rosemary (Ray) de St. Aubin and Patricia; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas D.; a son, Jack (Betty Schnell); a brother, James Talbot; and a sister, Mary Talbot.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 29 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston.
Arrangements were made with Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows.
Perry B. Owens
A funeral Mass for Perry Buck Owens, 66, a lifelong resident of the Barrington area, was celebrated Sept. 27 at St. Anne Church, Barrington.
Born Dec. 26, 1936, in Greenwich, Conn., he died Sept. 23, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Owens was a graduate of Lake Forest College and received his master of business administration degree from the University of Chicago Graduate School.
He began his professional career as a commercial loan officer for the Northern Trust Co. Bank in Chicago, and later worked as a vice president of mergers and acquisitions for B.C. Phelps & Co. in Chicago.
In 1965 he formed Utilities, Inc., in Northbrook and served as chairman and chief executive officer.
He was also the director and treasurer of the Illinois Mental Health Association, director and treasurer of North Suburban YMCA and director of the Better Boys Foundation of Chicago.
Mr. Owens served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enjoyed gardening, sports cars, traveling and dining out.
Mr. Owens is survived by three children, Brandon J. (Kimberly) of Barrington, Kimberly (W. Patrick) Fitzgerald of Wilmette and Megan of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jillian, Jack Perry, William Fitzgerald and Emma Fitzgerald; a sister, Susan (Thomas) Keefer of Arlington Heights; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Devney Lynn; his parents, Bruce and Helen (nee Perry); and a brother, David L.
Burial was in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Virginia M. Quinn
Virginia M. Quinn (nee Latus), 85, of Clarksville, Tenn., formerly of Chicago, died Sept. 23, 2003 at Resurrection Hospital, Chicago.
She was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Bearlake, Mich.
Mrs. Quinn is survived by five daughters, Carol (Leroy) Kowalski of Chicago, Monica (Paul) Schultz of Mount Vernon, Ill., Mary (Stanley) Schultz of Arlington Heights, Celestine T. of Clarksville, Tenn., and Virginia (Steve) Labno of Brookfield, Ill.; two sons, John (Lynne) of Algonquin and Thomas (Miya) of Clarksville, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bernard (Luz) Latus, of San Diego, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and a sister, Elaine Kaiser.
A memorial Mass and interment will be scheduled for a future date.

Marcia F. Sullivan
Marcia "Marcy" F. Sullivan, nee Fitch, 79, former longtime resident of Northbrook, died Sept. 23, 2003 in her Arlington Heights home.
Mrs. Sullivan was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Evanston, to Joseph and Aline Smith Fitch.
She was raised in Winnetka, where she graduated from New Trier High School in 1942.
She attended Sullins College in Bristol, Va., and Northwestern University in Evanston, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She was employed at Bell and Howell prior to her marriage in 1950 to Paul D. Sullivan Jr. of Hubbard Woods.
She resided in Northbrook for 52 years, and was a member of the Village Church of Northbrook. She was a dedicated wife, mother and friend.
Survivors include her husband, Paul "Buzz" of Arlington Heights; two daughters, Marcy (Larry) Truman of Fallbrook, Calif., and Kathy (Steve) Young of St. Louis; one son, Mike (Marti) of Northbrook; six grandchildren, Elizabeth and Caitlin Truman, Carter and Allie Young, and Paul and Grace Sullivan; and a brother, Joseph S. Fitch.
Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Fitch Hill.
Visitation and funeral service were held Sept. 27 at N. H. Scott & Hebblethwaite Funeral Home in Glenview.
Interment was private.

Lawrence G. Vonckx
A memorial Mass for Lawrence G. Vonckx, 65, of Arlington Heights, was celebrated Sept. 27, 2003 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights.
Born Sept. 5, 1938, in Chicago, he died Sept. 20 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Mr. Vonckx worked for the Chicago Public School System at Steinmetz High School. He spent 30 years as a guidance counselor and four years as a teacher.
Mr. Vonckx is survived by his former wife, Helen Ann "June" Bourke; two children, Mary Helen and Lawrence Paul, both of Arlington Heights; two brothers, James of Buffalo Grove and Joseph (Bonnie) of Leesburg, Fla.; and his nephews, Joseph (Linda), Robert and Ken (Ann).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillian (nee Kloft).

Mary M. Witt
Funeral services for Mary M. Witt (nee Mors), 84, of Arlington Heights, were held Sept. 29, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church, Arlington Heights.
Born Oct. 21, 1918, in Arlington Heights, she died Sept. 25 at RML Hospital, Hinsdale.
Mrs. Witt retired from Illinois Bell as an executive secretary.
She was a member of the Retired Pioneers of Illinois Bell, and was a volunteer at Northwest Community Hospital and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Witt is survived by four children, Herman A. "Skip" (Sandra) of Canton, Mich., Terrence G. (Suzanne) of Bartlett, Joy (Terry) McCombs of Bloomington and Gregory M. (Susan) of Glenview; nine grandchildren, Kristin A., Jeffrey A., Thomas, Carrie (Jacek) Rys, John (Patti), Lauren, Jennifer L. McCombs, Kelly L. McCombs and Maggie; and five great-grandchildren, Zack Rys, Allison Rys, Brianne Demes, Meaghan Demes and Grace Nuxoll.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman "Bud"; and her brother, Wallace Mors.
Interment was in Arlington Heights Wheeling Township Cemetery.

Leslie A. Cooper
A memorial service for Leslie Ann Cooper (nee Griffith), 54, of Arlington Heights, was held Oct. 10 at First Presbyterian Church, Arlington Heights. born Jan 17, 1949, in Chicago, she died Oct. 5, 2003 at home, with her three adoring sons and loving husband by her side.
As a teacher and proud educator, Mrs. Cooper taught and cared for children and young adults with great joy and boundless enthusiasm throughout her life and for the last eight years with the Northwest Suburban Education Organization, where she served as an inclusion facilitator at Prospect High School. She lived her last five years with cancer, robbed of her physical strength but inspiring in her warmth and generous spirit. She was a dear and loving friend to many.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband, Chuck; three sons, David, Andrew and Daniel; her mother, June Griffith; two sisters, Patricia (Dennis) Creighton and Susan Ford; a niece, Lauren Ford; and her nephews, Jeffery and Eric Creighton, and Jonathan and Alexander Ford.

Martin J. Ryan
A memorial service was held for Martin J. Ryan, 72, of Arlington Heights, on Oct. 11, 2003 at the North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield. born Aug. 18, 1931, in St. Louis, he died Oct. 7, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Ryan was dean of of liberal arts at Harper College from 1980 to 1990. Among his many accomplishments in that office, he was instrumental in bringing many artworks to the school. Mr. Ryan also was active in providing opportunities for Harper students to study abroad.
Mr. Ryan was one of the founding faculty members at Harper College when the school opened in 1967. Ryan was a member of the faculty there for 30 years, even serving as Faculty Senate president.
He was one of the founders of the Northwest Cultural Council, a group supporting arts in the region, and also served as its president.
Mr. Ryan also wrote poetry throughout his life. A collection of these works, "Destinations: New and Selected Poems." was published recently by J.B. Strout & Co.
Mr. Ryan studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Northwestern University in 1957. He earned a master's degree in the humanities from the University of Chicago in 1966.
Mr. Ryan is survived by his wife, Ann; his sons Christopher (Suzanne) Ryan of Dunlap, Ill., and Eric (Patty) Ryan of Crystal Lake; four grandchildren, Katie, Matthew, Elena and Lucas; a sister, Patricia, and a brother, James.

Loretta V. Cooper
A funeral Mass for Loretta V. Cooper, 86, a longtime resident of Arlington Heights, was celebrated Oct. 14, 2003 at St. James Church, Arlington Heights. born Aug. 10, 1917, in Chicago, she died Oct. 8, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Cooper was well-known in the restaurant and food service industries. She opened her first restaurant, the Star Tavern in Chicago, at the age of 18, and later opened the Casablanca Restaurant in Palatine, and subsequently opened both Loretta's and Cooper's in Arlington Heights. In the late 1960s, she changed from operating restaurants to the food service industry, and was employed at the Lutheran Home, and later at Northwest Community Hospital, before retiring in 1993.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her daughters, Celeste (Jerry Lockwood) and Claudette (Ken Ligon), both of Palatine; her stepchildren, Ronald E. of Louisville, Ky., and Betty A. (C. James) Vandy of Arlington Heights; her grandchildren, Caitlin, Corey, Travis, Clifford, Scott, Cynthia, Neil, Tami, Tim, Donny and Jeff; her sisters, Sophie Gumber, Clara Dobler, Lillian (Ray) Koleczyk and Pat (Ted) Piekarz; and her seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward V.; her son, Gregory Charles; and her parents, Ignatius and Victoria (nee Peckman) Broniecki.
Burial was in the St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 100 W. Kathryn B. Hughes
A funeral Mass for Kathryn B. Hughes of Arlington Heights was celebrated Oct. 10, 2003 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights. born March 19, 1919, in Chicago, she died Oct. 7, 2003 at her home.
Mrs. Hughes was a secretary for the Chicago Board of Education before she retired.
She is survived by her sons, Robert E. (Phyllis) Zumph of Park Ridge and John T. (Lenore) Zumph of Arlington Heights; a daughter-in-law, Maureen; her grandchildren, John E. (Lorena) Zumph, Donna (Philip) Haage, Robert S. (Susan) Zumph, James (Carol) Hughes and Jodi (John) Darrow; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, John A. Zumph and James J. Hughes; a stepson, Terrence Hughes; and her parents, Thomas and Kate (nee Bush) Keogh.
