Jane Goodwin
Jane Tait (nee McCarthy) Goodwin, a longtime resident of Evanston, who resided in Singapore prior to returning to Evanston 14 months ago, died Sept. 2, 2001 at the Hospice of the North Shore in Skokie. She was 32.
Born Nov. 18, 1968, in Chicago, she attended St. Joan of Arc Elementary School in Skokie and Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette.
She received a nursing degree from the St. Francis School of Nursing in Evanston.
Mrs. Goodwin worked as a neo-natal nurse at Evanston Hospital. She also worked in Norwalk, Conn., as a nurse, before living in Singapore.
She volunteered feeding homeless people at Hilda’s Place in Evanston.
She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Skokie.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Jr.; daughter Tait; son Andrew III; her parents, Jeri-Ann and Dr. Laurence McCarthy; sister Kelly (Thom) Mannard; brothers Larry Jr. (Debbie) McCarthy and Timothy (Linda) McCarthy; and her grandmother, Mabel McCarthy.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 5 at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Skokie.

Grace Halperin
A memorial service for Grace Eldridge Halperin of Evanston is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, 1330 Ridge Ave.
Mrs. Halperin, 87, died Aug. 21, 2001 at Evanston Hospital.
She was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo. After graduating from college, she received a master’s degree from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration.
She was a social worker for children’s service and family counseling agencies in Chicago and Evanston until her retirement in the 1970’s.
In retirement, Mrs. Halperin continued her work on social issues. She was a member of the Older Women’s League, an advocacy organization for aging women. As a member of this organization in the 1980s, she was a moving force in efforts to pass Illinois legislation extending health care benefits to widows and divorced spouses, and in the passage of the Spousal Impoverishment Reford Act in Illinois. She also served on the Evanston Commission on Aging’s long-term care committee and was on the board of the National Senior Citizens Law Center.
Mrs. Halperin worked as a volunteer at Mather Gardens in Evanston, where she lived, and at the North Shore Senior Center and Wagner Health Care Center. Until her death, she was an active member of the Hemlock Society and Equality Now, an international human rights organization concerned with violence against women.
She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Evanston and participated in committees and discussion groups there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo.
Survivors include stepson Richard Halperin of Paris, France; sister Beth E. Goering of North Newton, Kan.; three nieces; three nephews; and many other relatives.

Harold Kantner
Harold H. Kantner, a resident of St. Paul, Minn., for the past year and a former longtime resident of Evanston, died Aug. 19, 2001 in St. Paul. He was 81.
He grew up in Queens Village, N.Y., and graduated from Reed College in Oregon in 1949. He was granted a fellowship in physics at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Kantner became the head of computer research at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a job in which he continued for more than 25 years. For the rest of his life, he worked an an independent inventor and received many patents, awards and grants.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene.
Survivors include daughters Kristen (Steven) Scott of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Carol Kantner of Chicago; sons Jeffrey and Steven (Linda), both of St. Paul; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
His ashes will be scattered on Emerald Mountain in the Colorado Rockies, where his wife’s ashes await him and where the family holds its annual family reunion.

Ethel L. MacLean
Ethel L. MacLean, 92, of Vernon Hills, died Aug. 30, 2001 at the Winchester House in Libertyville. She was born June 1, 1909 in Evanston and was a former resident of Northbrook and Highland Park. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Evanston.
Surviving are three children, Dorothy (Clyde) Laughlin of Galena, Ill., William (Nancy) MacLean of Tahoe City, Calif. and David (Rebecca) MacLean of Grayslake; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and her sister Billie Grubby of Mansfield, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillian Little, by her husband Graham MacLean in 1990 and by her sister Dorothy Little.
Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Interment followed in Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines.
Kane B.S. Maranon
Kane Benedict S. Maranon, 10 months, of Skokie, died Aug. 21, 2001 at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Survivors include brothers Kyle and Cody and parents Carrol and Francisco Maranon.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 25 at St. Joan of Arc Church, Skokie and interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie. Funeral arrangements were made by Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, Evanston.
Obdulio Moreno
A funeral Mass for Obdulio Moreno, 68, of Mundelein, a former resident of Evanston and Arlington Heights, was celebrated Aug. 24 at St. Mary of Vernon Parish. born Dec. 5, 1932, in Bogota, Colombia, he died Aug 21.
Mr. Moreno came to the United States in 1960. He was a member of St. Mary of Vernon Parish in Indian Creek and was a retired data processing manager for the Ram Golf Corp. in Melrose Park. He is survived by his wife, Joan; four children, Hernando (Carmen) of Wauconda, Stella (Monte) Sellers of Arlington Heights, Alfredo of River Forest and David of Englewood, Colo.; five grandchildren; and sisters Marina, Isabel, Mary, Lilia, Cecelia and Miriam.
Interment was in Ascension Cemetery.
Mark Naughton Sr.
Mark P. Naughton Sr., 81, a resident of Arlington Heights for more than 40 years, died Aug. 28, 2001 at his home. He was born April 17, 1920, in Chicago.
Mr. Naughton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 106th Infantry Division and was a life member of the DAV. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938 to 1940, building roads in the Jordan Valley of Oregon.
Mr. Naughton was a former Golden Gloves boxer and was a Little League baseball and football coach for the Arlington Heights Park District during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He was a longtime and active parishioner at Our Lady of the Wayside Church. He was a sales manager for Tape Inc. for more than 22 years before retiring at age 70. He had been an employee of 3M for 23 years prior to working for Tape Inc.
He is survived by his wife, E. Helene (nee Fitzgerald), whom he married May 3, 1958; a daughter, Patricia of Arlington Heights; three sons, Stephen (Nancy Paridy) of Evanston, Mark Jr. (Angelique “Kiki”) and Myles (Nancy) of Arlington Heights; eight grandchildren; a sister, Anna; a brother, John (Carol); a sister-in-law, Jean Walsh; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila; two sisters, Evelyn and Ruth; and three brothers, Thomas, William and Frank (Gloria).
A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 31 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights. Burial was in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Masses are appreciated.
John Orvis
A memorial service for John Orvis of Indialantic, Fla., and Des Plaines, and a former resident of Evanston for 70 years, is scheduled for 1 p.m. today (Sept. 6) at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 2120 Lincoln St.
Mr. Orvis, 83, died Aug. 28, 2001 in Des Plaines.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Orvis worked in insurance sales.
Survivors include his wife, Alice (nee Highline); daughter Karen Petelek; stepdaughter Penny Pearson; stepson Eric Pearson; and one grandchild.
Inurnment will be in St. Matthew’s Church yard.

Vivion Phelps
Vivion Phelps, 66, of Evanston, died Aug. 7, 2001 at Evanston Hospital.
She was born Aug. 1, 1935, in St. Louis.
Mrs. Phelps worked as an administrative assistant for the Robinson Bus Co. until her retirement.
She volunteered as a secretary for the Gents Social Club.
Survivors include her husband, James H.; sons Johnathan (Darlene) Brooks of Castro Valley, Calif., and Leroy Honeycutt; six grandchildren; three nieces; and many other relatives.
A memorial service was held Aug. 11, 2001 at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Evanston.
