Emily L. Kafka
Age 93, formerly of Joliet, died January 14, 2001 in Fullerton, CA.
Born on October 26, 1907 in Chicago, IL., she was a Joliet resident from 1949 to 1991. She and her husband Edward D. Kafka were owners of Henley's Bookstore in downtown Joliet from 1949 until its closing in 1984.
Emily is survived by her son Robert and his wife Nannette of Fullerton, CA., with two children, Gregory and Julie Kafka both of Huntington Beach, CA. She is also survived by grandchildren from her deceased son Ed, Jr., Christine, Denise, Kimberley and Kelly Kafka, and Ed's wife Bruni. Great grandchildren: Jason and Jennifer Kafka, and Samantha and Ryan Schumm.
Emily was entombed with her husband, Edward, in St. Stephen's Crypt (the Mausoleum) at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL. After the funeral in California, the casket was shipped to Chicago, and granddaughter Kim was able to view her grandmother privately and accompany her to the crypt for entombment.

Age 63, late of Lockport, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at his home. born in Lockport, living in Lockport most of his life.
Employed by Will County Sheriff's Dept. for 14 years. Member of Lockport VFW Post #5788 and Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18.
Preceded in death by his parents, Edwin M. Sr. and Mary (Furca) Lein.
Survived by his sons, Douglas (Linda) of Lockport, Scott (Theresa) of Topeka, KS, Anthony (Maria) of North Platt, NE and Eric of Lockport; four grand children, Alex, Andy, Amy & Arin; and one sister Marilyn (Douglas) Wallis of Tempe, AZ.

Betty Ann Bohac McGurk
Age 60, formerly of Braidwood, late of Joliet, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. born October 9, 1940 in Joliet.
Betty was employed as Food Service Manager at the St. Francis Convent in Joliet, where she enjoyed the nuns and gave them tender loving care. She previously managed the cafeteria at the Commonwealth Edison Training Center in Braidwood where she was known as "Aunt B." She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and her dogs, Skeeter and Bailey.
Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Strohm of South Wilmington and Theresa McGurk of Joliet; two sons, Mark McGurk of South Wilmington and Michael McGurk of Joliet; her mother, Rae Bohac of Braidwood; three sisters, Rosa Lee (Robert) Wicks of Braidwood, Judy (Carleton) Bergere of Chicago and Mary Ellen (William) Eller of Custer Park, IL; two brothers, John (Patti) Bohac and Neil (Brenda) Bohac both of Braidwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband, Evan L. McGurk; father, George Bohac Sr.,; two brothers, George Bohac Jr. and Charles Bohac and an infant sister, Margaret Bohac.
Funeral services will be held from the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, LTD, Braidwood Chapel, Monday, January 22 at 9:30 a.m. to the Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Steve Bondi officiating. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery in Braidwood, IL.

age 68, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 after a long illness.
Formerly of Palos Hills. Wife of 45 years to Rev. Mr. John W. Murray; loving and caring mother of Sara A. Murray-Wullenwaber, Lara L. (Robert) Cardona and Cara E.T. Murray. Daughter of the late Sarah I. (nee Stilwell) and Edward D. Betz; sister of the late Dale A. Betz and Leona L. Betz; dearest grandmother to Hana May, Reynaldo and Robert A. Cardona. Loving Aunt Hana to many nieces and nephews. Friend to many.
Helen was a School Bus Driver for 36 years in the Blue Island, Palos and Tinley areas. Former District Leader for the Girl Scouts in the Palos area. A member of the A.C.C.W. of Sacred Heart Church, Palos Hills.

Born in Newton, MS and a longtime Joliet area resident. Retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1977 following 25 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters, Christy (Larry) Bailey of Joliet and Carla (Dale) Kadlecek of Coral Springs, FL; four grandchildren, Sandy Bailey, Jennifer (Tim) McFarland, Eric and Mark Kadlecek; two great-grandchildren, Steven and Amber McFarland; her dear friend, Anna. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Age 81 years. died Sunday, January 14, 2001 at Provena Villa Franciscan. born in Crawfordville, Arkansas. She has resided in Joliet for 55 years. Retired from Provena St. Joseph Medical Center. An active member of Brown Chapel AME Church. Preceded in death by her parents and one grandson. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Bessie (Robert) Harris, two grandchildren, Catherine Scott and James (Penny) Stewart, a step-grandson, Phillip Harris. Seven great-grandchildren and a devoted friend, Cora Black.

Sister M. Barbara Scholtes, O.S.F.
Age 92, died January 16 at Our Lady of Angles Retirement Home in Joliet, Illinois.
Born in Joliet, Illinois, Sister Barbara was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, Joliet, IL., for 70 years. She is the beloved sister of William (Dorothy) Scholtes of Joliet, sister-in-law Gladys (Henry deceased) Scholtes and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sister Barbara's cousins include Sister Rosemary Fonck, O.S.F. also a member of her Congregation and Rev. Benet Fonck, a Franciscan priest.
She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Nicholas and Barbara (Fonck) Scholtes; sisters baby Catherine Scholtes, Catherine (George) Korell and Agnes (John) Lawnzak; brothers Ferdinand (Mary) Scholtes, Nicholas (Josephine) Scholtes, Jr., Peter (Virginia) Scholtes, August (Anna Mae), Henry Scholtes, and baby Joseph Scholtes.
Maria Johanna, as she was baptized, was received into the Franciscan Congregation in 1930 and received the name Sister Mary Barbara. She dedicated most of her religious years in the Congregation to elementary and junior high education, touching the lives of many families in the Joliet area, and parishes in Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In Joliet, Sister tutored at the St. Peter Claver Center from 1971-1975 and taught students at Holy Family from 1980-1983. She retired to St. Frances Academy in 1983 to 1990 until St. Frances Academy became Joliet Catholic Academy in 1990. She then retired to Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet.
Sister Barbara Scholte's wake will be held at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL., (Rte. 30 and Wyoming Avenue) on Friday, January 19 from 2-7 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 4:30 P.M. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 P.M..
Burial will be from Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 20 to her family's section in St. John's Cemetery on Ruby Street in Joliet, IL.

Attorney Robert Walsh Thomas
Age 94, a prominent Joliet attorney for over fifty years, active in many civic and charitable organizations, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2001 at his home in Joliet.
Graduate of Joliet Township High School Class of 1924; Lake Forest College Class of 1928 and Harvard Law School Class of 1931. After being admitted to the Illinois State Bar Association in 1931, Mr. Thomas began practicing law in Will County. At his retirement, he was senior partner of Thomas, Wallace, Feehan and Baron. Mr. Thomas is a past-president of the Will County Bar Association, the Joliet-Will County Community Chest and Kiwanis Club of Joliet. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Joliet Mass Transit Authority and the first layman to be Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of St. Francis.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth (Walsh) Bruning and stepfather, Ben P. Bruning, both of Joliet.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annabelle (Mahon); originally of Springfield, IL; a daughter, Ann (Bodach) and a son-in-law, Robert C. Bodach of Joliet; and son, Robert M. Thomas and daughter-in-law, Barbara (Giugliano) of Highland Park, IL; as well as four grandchildren, Robert Bodach, Ann Bodach, Michael Bodach and Alexandra Thomas.
Funeral services for Robert W. Thomas will be Saturday, January 20, 2001 at 10:30 AM from the West Chapel to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Formerly employed as Manager at Consumer Liquors, Lockport for 25 years.
Preceded in death by her father, Jess Hiefnar.
Survived by two sons, Tony Walker and Marvin (Cindy) Walker Jr., both of Joliet; her loving husband, Marvin Walker Sr.; two grandchildren Candace and Adam Walker; her mother, Flora Hiefnar (nee Brown); three sisters and two brothers all of TN. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
