ABINGDON - Alma E. Legate, 88, 509 E. Martin St., formerly of the Alexis area, died at 6:08 p.m. Monday (April 4, 2005) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born May 3, 1916, in Fremont, Mo., the daughter of Matthew Montgomery and Birdie M. Shoemaker Bramlett.
She married Joseph Herbert Legate on Feb. 17, 1933, in Supply, Ark. He died June 4, 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Winford (and Sallie) Legate, Cambridge, and Ronald (and Carol) Legate, Alexis; a daughter, Reta (and Donald) Shinn, Abingdon; a brother, Cecil (and Verna) Bramlett, East Galesburg; a sister, Lora Bishop, Knoxville; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cleta V. Legate, four brothers and six sisters.
She was a homemaker, and helped her husband farm near Alexis, where she had lived for 41 years. She had lived in Abingdon for the past 17 years.
She attended United Pentecostal Tabernacle in Galesburg, Countryside Baptist Church in Monmouth, and First Assembly of God in Abingdon.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Revs. Todd Henderson and Ken Muck officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Betty J. Wheeler

YATES CITY - Betty J. Wheeler, 68, Yates City, died at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday (April 5, 2005) in her home.
She was born Dec. 22, 1936, in Decaturville, Mo., the daughter of Robert and Dora Breedlove Webb.
She married Loren Wheeler on Oct. 1, 1964, in Pensacola, Fla.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Loren G. Wheeler II, Yates City; two daughters, Pamela Sue Sartin and Roxanna G. (and Brian) Moats, both of Yates City; three sisters, Dorothy Crall and Ollie Bowman, both of Lynn Creek, Mo., and Margie Hook, Hiawatha, Iowa; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
She lived in North Carolina for several years and in Yates City since 1978. She had been employed by the Peoria Journal Star.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Patterson Funeral Home, Elmwood, with the Rev. Mary Babcock officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded.

GALVA - Maria E. Garcia, 72, Galva, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday (April 4, 2005) in her home.
She was born Nov. 15, 1933, in San Pedro Ranch, Texas, the daughter of Tirso and Severina Marquez Hernandez.
She married Theodoso Garcia Sr. on Sept. 12, 1950, in Portalis, Mexico.
Surviving are her husband of Sterling; seven sons, John (and LouAnn) Garcia, Sterling, Israel (and Chris Worden) Garcia, Daniel (and Lupita) Garcia, Theodoso (and Teresa) Garcia Jr. and Marsial (and Mary McLean) Garcia, all of Kewanee, Raul (and Kathy) Garcia, Oregon, and Wally (and Nicole Wood) Garcia, Galva; six daughters, Olivia Moreno, Riverview, Fla., Rosa (and Ricardo) Hernandez, Elgin, June (and Larry) Watson, Cambridge, Adela (and Ignacio) Cantu Sr., Sterling, Jeanie (and Jose) Velasquez Sr., Rock Falls, and Veronica (and Jesus) Oregon, Carpentersville; three brothers, Nicolas (and Minnie) Hernandez, Laredo, Texas, Vidal (and Olivia) Hernandez, Zapata, Texas, and Chicho (and Lucia) Hernandez, Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Paula Hernandez, Lubbock, Texas, Josefa Sedillo, Hebbronville, Texas, and Maria Dela Santos, Springfield, Ohio; 45 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one daughter at birth, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and brothers and sisters.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fredi Gomez-Torres officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rux Funeral Home, with the rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

ALEDO - Eugene Fields, 80, Aledo, died Monday (April 4, 200) in the Mercer County Hospital Extended Care Unit.
He was born March 29, 1925, in rural Joy, the son of Ralph and Delorous Eckhardt Fields.
He married Marjorie M. DeHaven on June 12, 1949, in Davenport, Iowa. She died in 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandy (and Dennis) Spence, Silvis, and Shari (and Keith) Chandler, Aledo; a son, Scott (and Thelma) Fields, Rifle, Colo.; a sister, Mary K. Reed, Jonesboro; two half-sisters, Lena Marie Abrahamson of Wisconsin, and LuAnne Korsh, Bettendorf, Iowa; a brother, Roger Fields, Rock Island; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated from Joy High School and the University of Illinois.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946.
He was a professional civil engineer and was employed from 1947 to 1954 by the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was involved in construction from 1954 to 1967 and was Mercer County superintendent of highways from 1967 to 1973. He did private engineering and land surveying from 1973 until retiring.
Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fippinger Funeral Home.
Memorials may made to the Mercer County Hospital Extended Care Unit.
Janice Skweres

GIG HARBOR, Wash. - Janice Skweres, 77, Gig Harbor, formerly of Galesburg, Ill., died Monday (April 4, 2005).
Surviving are two sons, Ray Gagg, Gig Harbor, and Ron Gagg, Port Orchard, Wash.; three daughters, Sally Crabtree, Port Orchard, Wash., Merry Gagg, Gig Harbor, and Dee Dee Mayerchak, Sharpsville, Pa.; one sister, Joan Cooley, Merlin, Ore.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild.
She was a resident of Brown County, Ind., for 15 years before moving to Gig Harbor.
She was a member of TOPS in Home, Wash.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haven of Rest Chapel. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Haven of Rest Memorial Park.

Gloria Y. Switzer

MONMOUTH - Gloria Y. Switzer, 81, Monmouth, died at 10:15 p.m. Monday (April 4, 2005) in the Monmouth Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Rock Island, the adopted daughter of Jack and Bessie Nelson Britton.
She married Edward Switzer on June 13, 1942, in Monmouth. He died Dec. 7, 1970.
Surviving are two daughters, Marianne Switzer, Monmouth, and Joyce (and Richard) Goff, Biggsville; one son, Carl (and Jane) Switzer, Monmouth; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
She was reared and educated in Alexis where she attended local schools and graduated from Alexis High School.
She worked for Woolworth Cafe, and Applegate Nursing Home Cafeteria as a cook.
Cremation was accorded. Graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren County Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ken Muck officiating. Friends may call Friday and Saturday at Turnbull Funeral Home. No family visitation is planned.
Banning, John F.

GALESBURG - John F. Banning, 82, 1122 Spruce Ave., died at 1:08 a.m. Thursday (June 19, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Aug. 6, 1920, in LaRue, Ohio, the son of Lloyd and Gladys Robinson Banning.
He married Dorothy L. White on June 6, 1943, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Christopher Banning, Galesburg; a daughter, Bonnie Banning, Belvidere; two sisters, Margie Price and Juanita McMahon, both of LaRue, Ohio; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Sherry Thompson, and two brothers.
He graduated from high school in LaRue, Ohio.
He owned and operated the Abingdon Quality Hatchery for 30 years, retiring in 1979.
He had lived in Abingdon for many years where he was a founding member of the Abingdon Fall Festival and had served as its president for seven years. He also was a founding member of the Abingdon Auxiliary Police and was a past member of the Abingdon Chamber of Commerce. He moved to Galesburg in 1979.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Galesburg.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Kirk Kendall officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Warren County Hope Cemetery, near Alexis.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.

MONMOUTH - Phyllis M. Barry, 78, Monmouth, died at 2:43 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 8, 2003) in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
She was born July 13, 1925, in LaHarpe, the daughter of Jesse and Iva Whitmore Carnes.
She married Raymond Barry. He preceded her in death in December 1961.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald (Mike) Barry, Monmouth, Danny (and Melva) Barry of Arizona, and Larry Barry, Albuquerque, N.M.; four daugthers, Patricia Barry, Marge Barry and Goldie Barry, all of Monmouth, and Tammy (and Gary) Christianson, Roseville; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Timmy, three brothers and a sister.
She was reared and educated in Gladstone.
She was a homemaker.
She was of Methodist faith.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Monmouth Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the service at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel.
A memorial will be established.
Bateman, Clyde L.

ELMWOOD - Clyde L. Bateman, 92, Elmwood, died at 5:49 a.m. Monday (Oct. 13, 2003) in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born Feb. 2, 1911, near Dunlap, the son of James W. and Mary M. Mankle Bateman.
He married Vera C. Custer on June 20, 1931, in Iowa.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Clifford (and Mary) Bateman, Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Charlene (and Howard) Martin, Clovis, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
He lived and farmed most of his life in the Elmwood area and also worked in management at Caterpillar, Inc., retiring after 45 years.
He was a member of Elmwood Horeb Lodge 363 and Modern Woodsmen of America.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Patterson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean McFadden officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Bates, Guy B.

GILSON - Guy B. Bates, 78, 724 Knox Road 600 North, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday (Jan. 5, 2004) at home.
He was born Oct. 8, 1925, near St. Augustine, the son of Bane and Flora Daisy Cramer Bates.
He married Mary Lou Ramp on Feb. 14, 1948, in Knoxville.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mary Beth (and Gary) Bowman, Maquon, and Susan J. Bates and Cathy (and Bill) Shenaut, both of Knoxville; two sons, Bill (and Susie) Bates and Bane (and Angela) Bates, both of Gilson; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert Guy Bates, and a sister.
He was reared and educated in the Gilson and DeLong areas, attending "Cornfield College" Grade School near Gilson, grade school in DeLong and Gilson High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1946 to 1947.
He farmed and was a rural mail carrier.
He served as a 4-H Leader, on the Knox County 4-H Extension Council, on the Knoxville School Board for nine years, as Chestnut Township Trustee, on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service County Committee and as superintendent of the Knox County Fair Swine Department. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association and Knox County Pork Producers, and was a lifetime member of the National Duroc Swine Association.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, with the Rev. Michel D. Clark officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery.

Geraldine M. Bauer

ABINGDON - Geraldine "Jet" M. Bauer, 82, Abingdon, died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 30, 2003) at the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born April 27, 1921, in Abingdon, the daughter of Larry and Zoe Stegall Billings.
She married Pat Bauer on Dec. 17, 1949, in Abingdon. He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, William (and Carolyn) Bauer, Glasford, and Gerald (and Bienvenida) Bauer, Luqillo, Puerto Rico; one sister, Kathleen Emery, Galesburg; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Margaret Ruth Smith.
She was a 1940 graduate of Abingdon High School.
She enlisted in the Army in September 1943 as a Women's Army Corps. She served overseas in Europe and was in the battle of northern France. She received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Bronze Star, the WAC Service Ribbon, Two Overseas Service Bars, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
She was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon and was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary.
She worked at the Abingdon Telephone Office, Galesburg Municipal Airport and Abingdon Pottery. She wrote Abingdon news for The Register-Mail for many years. She also sold the World Book Encyclopedia for a number of years and Avon Products for 29 years.
She was a china painter and was a past member of the Galesburg Prairie China Painters.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a past youth leader in the church. She was a former Cub Scout leader. She was a member of the first auxiliary police group established by the Abingdon Police Department.
She was active in starting of the Abingdon Community Festival Association and served as chairman of arts and crafts at the festival.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon, where the Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with military rites conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381.
