KNOXVILLE - Helen E. McElwain Clark, 82, 1 Gilbert Park, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Dec. 15, 1921, near Gilson, the daughter of Ortie Lacy and Lillie Irene Walker McElwain.
She married Howard R. Clark on Nov. 24, 1945, in rural Gilson.
Surviving are her husband; three sons, Steven L. Clark and James A. Clark, both of Northbrook, and Neil K. (and Karen) Clark, Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Laura McElwain Cansler, North Kansas City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Inez McElwain, Abingdon; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.
She attended Dempsey School through eighth grade, graduated from Knoxville High School, attended MacMurray College and graduated from Illinois State University.
She taught English and drama at Cooksville High School and Bradford High School, and taught preschool for 14 years at Northfield Community Nursery School.
She wrote the lyrics for the Bradford High School song.
She was a member of Northfield United Church of Christ and was moderator, Sunday school superintendent, wedding coordinator and elder. She was a village trustee in Northfield.
After moving to Knoxville when she retired, she was active with the Knoxville Women's Club, the MI Club, P.E.O. Chapter AM, Knox County Historic Sites and the Community Food Pantry. She was a member of Knoxville United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women and Connie Wieck Circle, and was named Volunteer of the Year.
Services will be at noon Thursday in Knoxville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary Vick Roth officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will be later. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at her church.

GALESBURG - Richard L. Clark, 58, 1041 W. Brooks St., died 4:18 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Galesburg, the son of Robert and Margaret Clark Briggs.
He married Alice Downard on Feb. 20, 1965, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; five sons, Richard (and Charlotte) Clark, Bushnell, Roger (and Deborah) Clark and David (and Amy) Clark, both of Galesburg, Michael (and Amy) Clark, Evansville, Ind., and Jeffrey (and Latricia) Clark, Avon; a stepsister, Patricia; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
He lived all his life in Galesburg and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1966.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served from 1969-1971.
He worked at Gale Products/OMC for 15 years, for District 205, in security at Maytag for four years and as a bus driver for Mayflower.
He attended First Church of the Nazarene.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in East Linwood Cemetery, with military honors by Ralph M. Noble American Legion. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.

EAST MOLINE - Walter E. "Judge" Clark, 81, East Moline, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at home.
He was born June 28, 1922, in Coal City, the son of Carl and Maude Watson Clark.
He married Rose Giovenazzo. He married Lois Gregory. He married Betty Bjornson on Dec. 17, 1955, in Kewanee.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Clark, East Moline; four daughters, Connie (and Warren) Gale, Orion, Sharon Batten, Silvis, B. J. (and Larry) Sanders, Moline, and Liz (and Bill) Watson, East Moline; four sons, William (and Beverly) Buckley, Moline, Carl (and Sandy) Clark, Hampton, Greg Clark, Grand Junction, Iowa, and the Rev. Mike (and Karen) Clark, Knoxville; a sister, Mae VanThorre, East Moline; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He had worked at the Rock Island Railroad. He was justice of the peace in Hampton Township, police magistrate in East Moline and associate circuit judge in the 14th Judicial Circuit, retiring in 1979.
He was a life member and past commander of the Dreier Whitney Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Silvis, served on the Rock Island County sheriff's commission, was a member of the Moline Elks and Vikings, was a Master Gardener and on the council and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Immanuel Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island.
Memorials may be made to his church.

GALESBURG - Frankie I. Clay, 80, formerly of 982 Frank St., died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 21, 2003) in Galesburg Terrace Nursing Center.
She was born July 10, 1923, in Denmark, Ill., the daughter of Franklin W. and Nora R. Eaton Gillis.
She married Earl V. Clay on Sept. 11, 1945, in Cutler. He preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1991.
Surviving are three sons, Richard E. (and Rhonda) Clay, Gregg A. (and Teresa) Clay, and Rodger D. (and Debbie) Clay, all of Galesburg; two daughters, Peggy (and Rick) Danielson, Galesburg, and Carol S. Clay, Chicago; one sister, Frieda Gillis Edman, West Covina, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Patterson officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in the Knoxville Cemetery.

PEKIN - Naomi R. Cleveland, 70, Pekin, died at 7:53 a.m. Friday (Dec. 12, 2003) in Pekin Hospital.
She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Canton, the daughter of Roy and Alta Darlene Barnhart O'Donnal.
She married Dale H. Cleveland on Oct. 4, 1963, in Macomb.
Surviving are her husband; two sons, Kevin (and Pam) Williams, Edgewater, Fla., and Bruce Cleveland, Los Olivos, Calif.; and one daughter, Brenda (and Chris) Mathewson, Edgewater, Fla.; one sister, Wilma Jean Rutledge, Galesburg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Williams; one brother and one sister.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bushnell and attended the Pekin Free Methodist Church. She was a past member of the Rebekah Lodge in Bushnell.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Oak-Hines Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Schrader officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Canton.

KNOXVILLE - Avery H. Coates, 76, a resident of the Knox County Nursing Home, died there Friday (Dec. 19, 2003).
He was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Osceola, Ark., the son of James and Olivia Bonds Coates.
He married Jettie Griggs on Dec. 4, 1993, in Ripley, Tenn.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Avery Coates Jr., Padukah, Ky.; four daughters, Gale (and Joseph) Arnold and Pamela Outlar, both of Chicago, Tabatha Outlar, Evanston, and Adrian (and Martin) Banks, Galesburg; and a sister, Dorothy Coates, Ripley, Tenn.
He farmed near Ripley, Tenn., for many years.
He was a member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Galesburg.
Funeral will be at noon Tuesday in Holy Temple Church of God, with the Rev. L.V. Cliff officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Fletcher & McDougald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WARSAW, Mo. - Aldene Mary Cole, 78, Warsaw, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 2003), at the Warsaw Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 18, 1925, in Victoria, the daughter of Clarence Casey and Beulah Fahnstrom.
She married Raymond L. Cole on Aug. 27, 1944, in Venice, Fla.
Surviving are her husband; four sons, Dale R. (and Dixie) Cole and Herbert L. Cole, both of Warsaw, Eugene (and Teresa) Cole, Blue Springs, and Larry (and Rennie) Cole, Bates City,; one daughter, Edith Cole (and Don) Hunter, Blue Springs; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was raised in Galesburg, Ill.
She and her husband moved to Independence, Mo., in 1969, and they both worked at the Independence Sanatarium until retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Warsaw, where she was the women's leader; and also was a member of Warsaw TOPS.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reser Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Anway officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Shawnee Cemetery.

GALESBURG - Lucille G. Coleman, 87, 1257 W. Main St., died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 16, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Chicago, the daughter of Casimir and Constance Grams Siwinski.
She married Daniel Coleman on Oct. 5, 1940, in Chicago.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Carol (and Fred) McAlister, Galesburg; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, and St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary recited at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 5, 1958, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Corine Harris and Morris Coleman Sr.
Surviving are her parents, Corine Harris, Mesa, Ariz., Morris (and Pat) Coleman Sr., and Juanita (and Carlos) Duncan, all of Galesburg; a grandmother, Violet Hollins, Galesburg; five sisters, Debra (and Bennie) Reynolds, Gilbert, Ariz., Stephanie Coleman and Tara (and Jeremie) Main, both of Galesburg, Kathie Reed, Waterloo, Iowa, and DaVonne Duncan, Orange, N.J.; five brothers, Morris (and Carol Ann) Coleman Jr., Steven (and Susan) Coleman, William Coleman, and Howard Duncan III, all of Galesburg, and Ronald (and Rachel) Coleman Sr., Peoria; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She graduated from Toulminville High School, Mobile, Ala., and from Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg. She was attending Bradley University.
She volunteered at several agencies and churches.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Central Congregational Church, Galesburg, where visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m.
