MONMOUTH - Charles Collins, 80, Monmouth, died at 11:38 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2004) in Community Medical Center.
He was born March 26, 1923, in Media, the son of Charles Henry and Maude Pearl McKee Collins.
He married Beulah R. Hood on Feb. 21, 1943, in Kahoka, Mo.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Greg (and Lisa) Collins, Gladstone, Rodney (and Rita) Collins, Monmouth, and Bradley (and Amanda) Collins, Dyersburg, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and a grandson.
He was reared and educated in Henderson County, graduating from Little York High School in 1941.
A Navy veteran, he served as a fireman 1st class and yeoman in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946.
He worked as a state game warden, farmed near Avon and twice worked for the Warren County Farm Service, including as a salesman from 1970 until retiring in 1988.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Odd Fellows Lodge 61 and Marion B. Fletcher American Legion Post 136.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. James Epperson officiating. Friends may call at noon Saturday at the funeral home; family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m., with an Odd Fellows service at 6:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery.

GALESBURG - Alberta Collins, 77, 586 Rio St., died at 4 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 5, 2004) in Seminary Manor.
She was born June 27, 1926, in Herrin, the daughter of Richard O. and Carrie Leona Ford Sellars.
She married Frank "Rip" Collins Jr. on Dec. 1, 1945, in Monmouth. He died Dec. 10, 1980.
Surviving are two sons, Richard O. Sellars Jr., Tallmadge, Ohio, and Patrick Joseph Collins, Galesburg; a daughter, Rebecca Ann Collins, Galesburg; a niece, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She graduated from Herrin High School in 1944.
She lived most of her life in Galesburg.
She worked at Sears for 22 years, retiring in August 2003.
She was of Catholic faith.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will be later in Herrin City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.

OQUAWKA - Bessie L. Cook, 77, Oquawka, died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003) in Monmouth Nursing Home, Monmouth.
She was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Dallas City, the daughter of Leonard and Ella Higknight Price.
She married Lloyd Cook. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Joan (and Walter) Miller, Oquawka; one son, Mike (and Wanda) Cook, Oquawka; two sisters, Rosella Siegfried, Burlington, Iowa, and Eva Oriano, Dallas City; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, three sons, two sisters, three brothers and two grandchildren.
She was a homemaker.
She worked at Monmouth Pottery and the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, Middletown, Iowa.
She was a member of Living Light Tabernacle Church.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Turnbull Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Adams officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Harris Cemetery, Dallas City.
Memorials may be made to Monmouth Nursing Home or Community Hospices of America.

ST. AUGUSTINE - A.W. "Bill" Coursey, 89, rural St. Augustine, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at home.
He was born May 19, 1914, near Monmouth, the son of James Lewis and Dorthea Emily Holloway Coursey.
He married Polly J. Schugmann on Sept. 19, 1948, in Abingdon.
Surviving are his wife; a son, George (and Deb) Coursey, St. Augustine; two grandsons, Shawn Coursey, St. Augustine, and Marc (and Kacey) Coursey, Good Hope; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
He was raised in Warren County and graduated from Yorkwood High School.
An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served in the 78th Fighter Squadron in the Pacific Theater.
He farmed in Knox County since 1949. He also worked as a security guard at Maytag in Galesburg for five years.
He was a past board member of the Poland China Association and a member of the Knox County Pork Producers. He was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, with Eleanor Landon officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 381.
Memorials may be made to the Abingdon High School Future Farmers of America.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Diane Dosing Courson, 51, Fort Lauderdale, died Dec. 2, 2003, in Florida.
She was born April 16, 1952, in LaCrosse, Wis., the daughter of E.J. and LaVerne Holloman Dosing.
Surviving are two sons, James David Courson and Robert Dosing Courson, both of Coral Springs, Fla.; her mother of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Margo Barker and Linda Dosing; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
She lived in Galesburg until 2001. She worked as a registered nurse in patient care and administration in Illinois, and was director of nursing in skilled nursing facilities in Florida.
Services were Sunday in First Lutheran Church, Galesburg.

GALESBURG - Doranne Cowan, 72, 1344 Rock Island Ave., died at 8:10 a.m. Friday (Oct. 17, 2003) in the Marigold Health Care Center.
She was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Streator, the daughter of George A. and Delores T. Barnwell Hillier.
She married James Cowan on Feb. 27, 1954, in Galesburg.
Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Carrie Dee (and Steve) Cervantez, and Jill Elizabeth (and) Travis Phillips, both of Galesburg, and Penny Ann (and Al) Hughey, Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, James Douglas Cowan, Galesburg, three brothers, William Hillier and George Hillier, both of Galesburg, and Bernard "Mick" Hillier, New Port Richey, Fla., 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1949. She graduated from Carl Sandburg College with an associate's degree in business.
She owned and operated Small Business Accounting & Auditing Services. She was also the bookkeeper for Patio Snack Shop.
She was of the Catholic faith and attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
She was a member of the League of Women Voters, was a Democratic precinct committeewoman and was a member of LULAC for many years and was a past secretary. She was voted Woman of the Year by LULAC in 1977. She also was a member of the American Women Bowlers Association.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Watson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society and to the family.

WOODHULL - Quentin H. Cowles, 79, formerly of Woodhull, died at 5:10 a.m. Dec. 23, 2003, in Seminary Manor, Galesburg.
He was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Woodhull, the son of Dr. George and Myrtle Tilden Cowles.
He married Imogene Horner on Nov. 22, 1966, in Oquawka
Surviving are his wife of Blandinsville; four stepchildren, Carol (and Lee) Reed, Blandinsville, Richard (and Rebecca) Horner, Arroyo Grande, Calif., Ron (and Sandra) Horner, Canberra, Australia, and Tom (and Candice) Horner, Winnetka; two sisters, Kathleen M. Frysinger, Peoria, and Mary Ann Sacco of South Carolina; two brothers, Robert T. Cowles of Missouri, and John A. Cowles of Iowa; eight stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandsons; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and an infant brother.
He graduated from Woodhull Township High School in 1942.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He worked at J. I. Case as a troubleshooter in the heavy equipment division. He owned and drove midget and sprint cars on the Midwestern racing circuit in the 1940s.
Cremation was accorded. Services will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 10, 2004, in Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull. The family will meet with friends at The Homestead Restaurant after the service.
Memorials may be made to the Special Care Unit at Seminary Manor or the AlWood Educational Foundation.
