NORMAN E. ROTH
ROCK FALLS - Norman E. Roth, 85, of Rock Falls died Friday, December 13, 2002 at CGH Medical Center. He was employed by RB & W in Rock Falls prior to farming in the rural Tampico and Nelson area. He retired from General Electric in Morrison in 1981.
Mr. Roth was born June 10, 1917 in Chicago, the son of Max and Minnie (Petersen) Roth. He married Ellen M. Young on May 27, 1938 in Chicago. He served as a Sgt. in the US Army at the Atomic Bomb Project in Los Alamos, NM during WW II. He was a member of the Rock Falls United Methodist Church for over 40 years and a member of Rock Falls American Legion Post #902.
Survivors include a son, Jerold (Karen) Roth of Medina, OH; two daughters, Sharon (David) Siex of Sterling, Susan (Richard) Jacobs of Freeport; two brothers, George (Lucy) Roth of Tavares, FL, Dr. Ted (Peggy) Roth of Longview, WA; a sister, Mildred Smola of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Janine Scandlon, Angela Arthur, Andrea Riley, Jeffrey Roth, Jonathan Roth, Curtis Siex, Jill Siex, Melissa Jacobs, Bradley Jacobs; and five great grandchildren, Caryn Scandlon, Kent Scandlon, Will Arthur, Weslea Arthur, Wyatt Arthur and Abbie Siex.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ellen on March 26, 2000 and one sister, Gertrude Krol.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Monday at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established.

FLORENCE B. JOHNSON
The Lord took the hand of Florence B. Johnson, 86, to her new home on Saturday, December 14, 2002.
Florence B. Johnson was born January 18, 1916 in Sterling, the daughter of J. Shirley and Bertha Talmadge Funk She married LeRoy B. Johnson in Sterling on May 25, 1935.
Mrs. Johnson was Secretary-Treasurer of Don Mullery Ford in Dixon for 15 years retiring in 1980. She was a life long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sterling, an active member of the Woman’s Social Circle of the church and Northern Illinois Credit Womens. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and bowling.
She is survived by her husband LeRoy B.; a son, Duane (Patricia) Johnson of Plainfield: three sisters Vera Carter of Sterling, Dorothy (Robert) Marsh of Rock Falls and Alice Diehl of Rock Falls; five grandchildren including Diane (Lonnie) Fisher of Oswego, Kelly (Ben) Minow of Hoffman Estates, Timothy (Helen) Chupp of Valparaiso, IN Ronald (Lisa) Chupp of Gadsden, AL and Darryn Chupp of Schaumburg; eight great-grandchildren; one niece and three nephews;
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Tuesday December 17,2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Herbert Reed officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.
A memorial has been established.

MINNIE P HUMPHREY
Minnie P. Humphrey, 85, died Thursday, December 19, 2002 at Coventry Village. She had been employed as a sales clerk in jewelry at Marshall Fields Company in Chicago.
Mrs. Humphrey was born January 15, 1917 in New Orleans, the daughter of Louis D. and Birdie Pearl (Rawlings) McMurry. She was married to Glenn Humphrey, who preceded her in death. She was a past member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn Humphrey, Jr of Phoenix, AZ, Kent Humphrey of Mosinee WI; a brother, James (Joyce) McMurry of Sterling, two sisters, Lois Wessner of Sterling, Betty (Jacob) Larwey; and six grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Robert McMurry and Webster McMurry.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM, Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Larry Thomson, pastor of Rock Falls United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Repose Cemetery, Amboy.
A memorial has been established.

FAY H. REITZEL
Mr. Fay H. Reitzel, 87, of 2104 22nd Avenue, died December 20, 2002 at CGH Medical Center.
Mr. Reitzel was born January 25, 1915 in Rock Falls, the son of Harry S. and Alda May Traister. He married Louisa Marie Daehler and she preceded him in death on October 19, 1975. He then married Lavina Wasmund and she preceded him in death on February 21, 1990. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Fisher Reitzel. Mr. Reitzel farmed in Milledgeville and Byron as well as operated Reitzel Insurance. He also was employed as a plater retiring from National Manufacturing.
Fay Reitzel was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sterling where he also sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Sterling-Rock Falls Barbershoppers and the Sterling-Rock Falls B.P.O.E. Fay loved growing plants, especially flowers.
Mr. Reitzel is also survived by one son, Daehle (Angie) Reitzel of Rock Falls; four grandchildren, Donna Rae Smith, Daryl Richard Reitzel, Rhonda Kae Hughes and Teri Jean Sathoff; nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ardetta Prowant and one in infancy; one granddaughter, Trisha Marie Reitzel.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sterling with Reverend Jonathan Singleton officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-8 PM at the Schilling Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to Trinity United Methodist Church and the Tri-County Animal Shelter.

LOUIS M. TEGELER
Louis M. Tegeler, 93, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at Sterling Pavilion. He was a farmer most of his life in the area and after retiring was a janitor for several years at Franklin School.
Mr. Tegeler was born August 9, 1909 in Fenton, the son of Martin and Winnie (Tervelt) Tegeler. He married Vivian Frankfother on February 14, 1934 in Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. He was a member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sterling.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; a son, Virgil (Donna) Tegeler of Polo; a daughter, Faye (Galen) Vos of Sterling; three brothers, Raymond Tegeler of Fenton, Lawrence Tegeler of Fulton, Marvin Tegeler of Chadwick; four sisters, Pauline Wherry of Fulton, Ann Schaver of Morrison, Theresa Ven Huizen of Morrison, Bernice Tegeler of Winnebago, NE; 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were seven brothers, Hank, John, Mike, Kenneth, Clarence, Ben, and LeRoy Tegeler; and one sister Kate Ottens.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM, Friday, December 20, 2002 at the Bethel Reformed Church in Sterling with the Reverend Kenneth Zuithoff, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, Thursday, at the Schilling Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to Bethel Reformed Church or Hospice of the Rock River Valley.

EILEEN M. BEHRENS
STERLING - Eileen M. Behrens, 84, died Monday, January 6, 2003 at CGH Medical Center.
Mrs. Behrens was born May 26, 1918 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Marshall and Edna (Matthew) Judd. She married Bernard Behrens on November 23, 1938 in Goose Lake, IA. He preceded her in death January 11, 1999. She enjoyed crocheting and reading.
Survivors include a son, Donald (Sharon) Behrens of Savanna; four daughters, Janice Wiersema of Rock Falls, Ellen (Doug) McCulloh of Morrison, Dorothy (Dennis) Morris of Sterling, Joyce Behrens of Savanna; one brother, Marshall (Mildred) Judd of Clinton, IA; 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were two grandsons, two brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Thursday, January 9, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Jagitsch, officiating. Burial will be at Hopkins Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM, Thursday, at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established.

LUCILLE A. (SWARTLEY) DARKOW
STERLING — The Lord, our Savior, called to His side, Lucille Anne Darkow, 80, on January 4, 2003. She was the beloved wife of Harold William Darkow of Bath, OH for almost 20 years.
Lucille was born and lived in Sterling, where she was part owner and operator of the Swartley Florist and Greenhouse. Lucille made the most beautiful bows and floral arrangements while managing the florist shop.
Lucille was the caretaker for her son, Lee, for his lifetime of special needs. Because of Lee’s cerebral palsey, Lucille dedicated many service hours as a parent and served on the Board of Directors of The Rock River Valley Self Help Enterprises. She also supported the Special Olympics program in Sterling.
For the last 20 years, Lucille was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Akron, Ohio. Her faith and strong belief aided her in her five-year illness which left her in a wheelchair. Lucille will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Florence Burr; husband, Lyle Swartley; and sister, Barbara Joan Darkow.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Harold William Darkow of Akron and sons, Loren (Shirley) Swartley and Lee Swartley of Sterling. She also leaves behind a sister, Charlotte (Jerry) Krocker of Peoria, AZ and Sister-in-law, Fran Swartley of Sterling. Lucille leaves behind step-children, Harold Louis (Beth) Darkow, Leah (Randy) Francis and Judith (Robert) Renner, all of Akron and Patricia Mathews of Lexington, NC.
Lucille will be greatly missed by her fourteen grandchildren; Jacob and Julia Swartley, Scott, Amy, Benjamin and Daniel Darkow, Michael (Denise), Jason (Katherine), Kenneth and Tricia Mathews, Aaron and Shane Francis, Melissa and Brian Renner.
The family would like to thank Windsong Center at Chambrel for their kind and gentle care of Lucille.
The funeral service will be at 10 AM, Friday, January 10, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Herbert Reed officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7, Thursday at the Funeral Home.

WILLIAM D. DETER
STERLING - William D. Deter, 78, died early Friday, January 03, 2003 at the Sterling Pavilion. He was a farmer in the area and also worked for Northwestern Steel & Wire Company for 17 years.
Mr. Deter was born April 15, 1924 in the Sterling Public Hospital, the son of Daniel and Violeta (Nice) Deter. He married Mary Louise Zigler on August 12, 1949 in Oregon, IL. She preceded him in death April 20, 1999. He was a member of the Science Ridge Mennonite Church.
Survivors include a son, Lamont (Karen) Deter of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Melony (Mike) Strong of Saudi Arabia; Valory (John) Jimenez of Sterling; two brothers, Melvin Deter of Foley, MN, Clayton Deter of Morrison; seven grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 11, 2003 at the Science Ridge Mennonite Church with the Reverend Mervin Miller, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Friday, January 10, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established.

GARRET L. HOWARD
STERLING - Howard L. Garrett, 75, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at CGH Medical Center following a long illness. He farmed in the area for 29 years, and was a melter foreman at the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. for 30 years, retiring in February of 1978.
Mr. Garrett was born July 11, 1927 in Breckenridge, MN the son of William and Blanche (McDougal) Garrett. He served in the US Army. He married Sylvia I. Newell on April 29, 1949 in Morrison. He enjoyed restoring homes and reading as a hobby. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Sterling.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Diane (Spencer) Quast of Belvidere, Sandy (Jerry) Hinrichs of Oregon, Beverly Garrett of Sterling; two sons, Robert (Karen) Garrett of Geneseo, Roger (Tammy) Garrett of Freeport, two brothers, Russell Garrett of Fulton and Richard Garrett of Rock Falls; three sisters, Janet (Lark) Perry of Sterling, Hazel Elders of St. Paul, MN, Verla Letteer of Wahpeton, ND; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, one sister, one daughter, and one son in infancy.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM, Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Schilling Funeral Home, with the Reverend Joseph Snider, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Friday at the Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established.

ELVIN ROCK
STERLING - Elvin C. Rock, 86, died Thursday, January 23, 2003 at CGH Medical Center.
He was employed in the machine shop of National Manufacturing for 30 years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. Rock was born June 22, 1916 in Sterling, the son of John and Anna (Buhrow) Rock. He was a Quartermaster in the US Army during WW II. He married Valetta Fossett on September 20, 1941 at St. John's Lutheran Church.
She preceded him in death on February 4, 1993. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 296 Sterling, Veterans of Foreign Wars Sterling #326, Rock River Masonic Lodge #612 Sterling, Past Master of Tebala Temple, Tebala Shrine Consistory of Freeport, and Past Patron of OES.
Survivors include a daughter, Renae (James) Shrader of Polo; a son, Renard (Wendy) Rock of Sterling; and one grandchild.
Preceding him in death was a sister, Marjorie Stevens, a brother, Eugene, and one grandson, Stephen Shrader.
Military graveside services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Lanark Cemetery with Reverend Herbert Reed officiating.
A memorial has been established to the Whiteside County Senior Center.
