GALESBURG - Janet E. Hawkinson, 89, 633 Willard St., died at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) in her son Chuck's home, 1577 S. Seminary St.
She was born Jan. 27, 1914, in Galesburg, the daughter of Clarence E. and Esther Larson Johnson.
She married K. Stuart Hawkinson on Oct. 2, 1934, in Galesburg. He died March 1, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth (and Phyllis) Hawkinson and Charles (and Priscilla) Hawkinson, both of Galesburg; a sister, Katherine M. Johnson, Galesburg; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1932 and from Brown's Business College.
She was a homemaker and worked at Goodyear and in the business office at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was a member of Covenant Church, where she was a deaconess, a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher and a member of Covenant Women. She was a member of the Knox County Republican Women.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Covenant Church, with the Rev. Tom Ek officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to her church.
Emery E. Haynes

GALESBURG - Emery E. "Gene" Haynes, 81, 1093 Prairie St., died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born May 26, 1922, in Maquon, the son of Harry and Gladys McWilliams Haynes.
He married Joan D. McAdam on Jan. 29, 1947, in Galesburg. She died Sept. 12, 1999.
Surviving are a son, Michael E. (and Jan) Haynes, Galesburg; four daughters, Joyce A. (and Larry) Walters, Susan K. (and John) Tolle, Julie E. (and Steve) Anderson and Amy L. (and Scott) Apodaca, all of Galesburg; two brothers, Paul (and Betty Ann) Haynes and James (and Betty Jean) Haynes, both of Oneida; three sisters, Laura Price and Alice (and Leon) Uhlmann, both of Galesburg, and Mary (and Don) Pont, Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Maquon High School in 1939 and attended Western Illinois University.
An Army veteran, he served three years as a Tech 4 in Italy and Africa.
He lived most of his life in Galesburg and worked as a laboratory supervisor at the former Galesburg Research Hospital for 34 years, retiring in December 1985.
He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and First Presbyterian Church.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in East Linwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Gina Sheridan officiating and military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.

Haynes, Betty J.

ONEIDA - Betty J. Haynes, 74, 2358 Knox Road 1125 E, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday (June 2, 2004), in Genesis West Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
She was born April 3, 1930, in Galesburg, the daughter of Fred and Lucille Willett Olson.
She married James E. "Jim" Haynes on Dec. 18, 1949, in Galesburg.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Gary (and Sylvia) Haynes, Oneida; a daughter, Carol Cutright, Hays, Kan.; a sister, Frances Nemeth, Galesburg; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1947.
She worked in Dr. Vinson Veterinary Clinic in Oneida for 13 years, retiring in 1974. She had lived in the Oneida area for 47 years.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Galesburg, the Oneida Women's Club and Oak Run Ladies Golf League.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Larsen officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in the Oneida Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Oak Run Ladies Golf League.
George M. Headspeth

JOY - George M. Headspeth, 67, Joy, died Friday (July 30, 2004) in Rock Island County.
He was born July 15, 1937, in Bristol, Va., the son of Lydge and Gladys Mathis Headspeth.
He married Shirley Brewer in 1960 and later married Patty J. Headspeth on Sept. 29, 1973, in Silvis. She died May 29, 1997.
Surviving is one son, Jason (and Debra) Headspeth, Joy; two daughters, Virginia (and John) Ewell, Pekin, and Nicole (and Chris) Eggen, Aledo; three stepdaughters, Wendy Smith, Aledo, Adaline Marlow, Matherville, and Heidi Miller, New Boston; three sisters, Virginia Headspeth, in Virginia, Marie Roake, Bristol, Va., and Ann Rutter, Bradford; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
He lived in Coal Valley until 1979. He moved to Taylor Ridge, then New Boston and later Joy.
He operated the Hillbilly Tap in Joy, retiring in 1991. He was a scrap dealer for many years.
There will be no visitation or services. Memorials in his name may be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.

Heady, Harvey L.

WATAGA - Harvey L. Heady, 84, 277 Knox Highway 37, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 17, 2003), in Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.
He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Batavia, Iowa, the son of Dave and Ella Robinson Heady.
He married W. Mabel Chapman on Aug. 25, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Lawrence G. Heady, Thornebay, Alas.; two daughters, Linda (and Kenney) Harmison, Galesburg, and Judith (and Tracy) Knisely, Monmouth; 18 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald L Heady and Terry Frances Heady, two brothers and one sister.
He worked for Butler Manufacturing for 30 years, retiring in March 1980. He also farmed.
He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America Local 2629 and the Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Kurt Carlsen officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove, or to the University of Iowa Foundation (Dr. Johlin Research).
Heerde, William

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - William "Coach" Heerde, 90, died Wednesday (April 7, 2004) in Albuquerque.
He was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Moline, the son of Frederick and Ida Emma Furhrburg Heerde.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia, whom he married in 1945; four daughters, Dee Clary, Long Beach, Calif., Carolyn Bislen and Jane Haagensen, both of Albuquerque, and Kathy Smith, Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
He graduated from Moline High School in 1931 and attended Knox College in 1938.
A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific and was the recipient of a Bronze Star.
He returned to Knox College in 1945, and at the age of 32, and was believed to be the oldest college football and basketball player in the country.
He coached and taught physical education in Illinois until 1968, then moved to Albuquerque and worked in the Albuquerque school system, retiring in 1978.
He was inducted into the Knox College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
Services will be at 10 a.m. April 17 in Chapel of Sunrise, Albuquerque. Burial will be in Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Hegg, Roland O.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Roland O. Hegg, 85, Saint Paul, formerly of Galesburg, died Nov. 18, 2003, in Saint Paul.
He was born Feb. 11, 1918 in Hatton, N.D., the son of Ole and Maria Olsen Hegg.
He married Clarice Powers on Jan. 30, 1945 in Portland, Ore.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Susan Wandell (and Jim), Shoreview, Minn.; a son, Richard Hegg (and Linda), Lake Bluff; a sister, Thelma Trom, Lisbon, N.D.; five grandchildren and nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, three sisters and a brother.
He was valedictorian of his high school class and graduated from Luther College in 1939.
His first teaching position was as band director and seventh grade biology, chemistry and geography teacher in Milford, Iowa.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served as a medic on a destroyer escort. He went to Columbia University to become an officer and returned to the Pacific Theatre, where he served the remainder of the war as a communications officer. He was a Navy reserve officer.
He earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa and in 1948 and became choir director at Galesburg High School.
He directed numerous community club and organization shows, and the high school musical and the annual Reflectiview, a variety show to raise money for the yearbook. In 1965, his choir was invited to the New York Worlds Fair.
He was named Man of the Year by the Cosmopolitan Club, received a Distinguished Service Award from Luther College and the Rotary Club Paul Harris Award. He directed the chancel choir at First Methodist Church for 25 years.
The Galesburg High School Auditorium was named The Roland O. Hegg Auditorium in 1995.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in Roland O. Hegg Auditorium.

Heikes, Helen C.

SMITHSHIRE - Helen C. Brokaw Heikes, 76, Smithshire, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2004) in Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab Center, Stronghurst.
She was born March 9, 1927, in Michigan, the daughter of Russell and Mala Calhoun Brokaw.
She married Robert B. Heikes on March 8, 1947, in Raritan. He died Oct. 5, 1993.
Surviving are a daughter, Mala (and Ron) Lankford, Smithshire; a son, Robert A. (and Joyce) Heikes, Smithshire; a sister, Hazel (and Milo) Francis, Media; two brothers, William (and Alice) Brokaw, Stronghurst, and Lawrence (and Alta Mae) Brokaw, Raritan; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and a great-grandson.
She graduated from Biggsville High School in 1944.
She had worked at Gale Products in Galesburg, Sylvania Corporation in Burlington, Iowa, and the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown.
She was a former member of Young's Lake in Kirkwood, the Daniel McMillan Chapter of the D.A.R. in Stronghurst and participated in bowling leagues in Biggsville and Blandinsville.
She was a member of Raritan Reformed Church and attended Smithshire United Methodist Church and was a member of its Women's Circle.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Banks and Beals Funeral Home, Stronghurst, with the Rev. James Olsen officiating. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home; family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Raritan Cemetery.

Helander, John O. Jr.

GALESBURG - John "Jack" O. Helander Jr., 88, 311 E. Simmons St., Galesburg, died at 4:50 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 25. 2003) at home.
He was born March 11, 1915, in Chicago, the son of John O. and Mary Samborski Helander Sr.
He married Olive M. Johnson on Feb. 4, 1939, in Chicago.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Doris Joyce (and Robert) Williams, Derry, N.H., and Helen M. (and Ed) Bantz of Galesburg; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He was a 1935 graduate of Carl Schurtz High School in Chicago.
He was a police officer in Chicago for 25 years and retired in 1965. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, retiring as a chief petty officer. He was a member of AmVets Police Post 18 in Chicago.
He lived in Chicago most of his life and in Galesburg for the last four years.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst, with the Rev. Phillip Laurin officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ahlgrim Funeral Home in Elmhurst.

COLCHESTER - Paul V. Helton, 88, Colchester, died at 4:23 p.m. Monday (July 28, 2003) in McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.
He was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Cornell, the son of Clarence E. and Nellie M. Davis Helton.
He married Pansy J. Bolen on April 8, 1935, in Sciota. She died May 16, 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Jimmie Dan (and Violet) Helton, Phoenix, Ariz., and Jackie E. (and Lisa) Helton, Colchester; two daughters, Judith N. (and Stanley) Schoonover, Colchester, and Janice Malone, Macomb; a brother, John (and Neva M.) Helton, Knoxville; a special friend, Juanita Briggs, Tennessee, Ill.; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters and a grandson.
He owned and operated Helton Trucking and Truck Repair in Colchester from 1940 to 1975.
He was a member of the Sciota Odd Fellows Lodge and Royal Neighbors Camp 536, and attended Tennessee United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Jones Mortuary, with the Rev. Ron Green officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Macomb.
