TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Wayne C. Nelson, 86, retired Galesburg, Ill., fire chief, died at 10 p.m. Monday (Dec. 29, 2004) in Twin Falls.
Most of his career in the fire service was with the Galesburg Fire Department, culminating with his service as chief before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet.
Burial of the couple is tentatively planned for July in National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island.
Nemeth, Roberta Marie

GALESBURG - Roberta Marie Nemeth, 91, 745 Avenue A, died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 13, 2003) in Rosewood Care Center.
She was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Galesburg.
She married James Nemeth on Jan. 31, 1931, in Rock Island. He died July 1983.
Surviving are two sons, Phillip (and Francis) Nemeth and Terry Nemeth, both of Galesburg; two daughters, Joyce (and Bob) Hendricks and Phyllis (and Richard) Norris, both of Galesburg; a sister, Hildred Webster, Galesburg; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1931.
She was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to her church.
Neumann, Melvin C.

WATAGA - Melvin Carl Neumann, 68, 2277 U.S. Highway 150N, died at 6:34 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21, 2004) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Springfield, the son of Ben and Frieda Profrock Neumann.
He married Joann Schaddel on June 29, 1963, in Petersburg.
Surviving are his wife; his mother of Petersburg; a son, Bruce (and Lisa) Neumann, Elburn; a daughter, Kathleen Neumann (and Martin) Maskarinec, Good Hope; a sister, Shirley (and Bob) Garvin, Petersburg; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
He graduated from Petersburg Harris High School in 1953 and attended the University of Illinois and Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.
An Army veteran, he served in an artillery unit in Germany and played trombone in the Army band.
He moved to the Galesburg area in 1967 and was executive director of the Knox County Farm Service Agency, formerly the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, for more than 36 years. He had a weekly radio report on WGIL about ASCS programs for several years. He also had been executive director of the Carroll County ASCS office for five years and a Country Companies Insurance agent.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg and had been head elder, served on the church council, chaired voter meetings and led an adult Bible class on Sunday mornings.
He was a member of the Illinois Association of County FSA/ASCS Office Employees and served as director or alternate director since 1964, was a member of Illinois Association of Farmer Elected Committeemen since 1965 and was a member of the Knox County and Illinois Corn Grower's Associations, Knox County and National Cattleman's Associations, Knox County CROP, Galesburg Cosmopolitan's Civic Club, Galesburg Jaycee's and Galesburg Sunrise Rotary Club. He received the Paul Harris service award from the Rotary Club.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Petersburg, with the Rev. Robert Lowe officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service Tuesday at the church in Petersburg and from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. by the Rev. Daniel Smith. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Petersburg.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Galesburg, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Petersburg, or the American Heart Association.
Newcomb, Charles D.

GILSON - Charles D. Newcomb, 50, 1249 Illinois Route 97, died at 5:04 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 27, 2003), at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born Aug. 10, 1953, the son of Donald and Winifred Woodcock Newcomb.
He married Linda S. Chapman on March 31, 1979, in Bishop Hill.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Alena Newcomb, Gilson; one son, Jonathon Newcomb, Gilson; one sister, Carol Lambert, Rockford; and his mother, Winifred Newcomb, Wataga. He was preceded in death by his father.
He was reared and educated in Galesburg, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1971. He then attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky.
He was employed by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a carmen for more than 25 years.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Knoxville Cemetery.

Newman, Arnold D.

PEKIN - Arnold Dale Newman, 83, Pekin, died Monday (Dec. 15, 2003), in the Pekin Living Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Enfield, the son of Herschel and Nora Gwaltney Newman.
He married Velma Marie Boyd on June 11, 1938. She died Dec. 7, 1997. He then married Loretta Eitenmiller on April 18, 1998.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Bob D. Newman, Oneida; two sisters, Faye Garrett, Carmi, and Freda Foley, Mount Vernon, Ind.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Carl E. Newman, two brothers and four sisters.
He was an iron puller for Caterpillar in Mapleton.
He was a Master Mason and belonged to Lodge 476 in Manitol; and was a member of the Baptist church.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Little Zion Cemetery in Enfield.

STRONGHURST - S. Nevada Nichols, 72, Stronghurst, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 15, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Quincy, the daughter of John and Goldie McCandless Riley.
She married Daniel Nichols on March 17, 1947, in Effingham.
Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Vicky (and Ronald) VanBlair, Stronghurst, Carol (and Gene) Heap and Donna (and Chuck) Link, both of Media; a son, Todd (and Gladys) Nichols, Media; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Warning, Liberty; and four brothers, Donald Riley, Ronald Riley, Gary Riley and Harry Riley, all of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents and 12 brothers and sisters.
She worked as a licensed practical nurse at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Lamoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville, and Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center, Stronghurst.
She was a member of Stronghurst Christian Church.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Stronghurst Christian Church, with Armand Harpin and Maurice Stribling officiating. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Stronghurst; family will be present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Media.

PEORIA - Ralph K. Nolan, 58, Peoria, died at 11 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 16, 2003), at Rose Garden Nursing Home in Peoria.
He was born Sept. 17, 1945, in Peoria County, the son of Fred and Dorothy Thompson Nolan.
Surviving are three brothers, Floyd (and Bernadine) Nolan and Tom (and Martha) Nolan, both of Pekin, and Fred (and Virginia) Nolan, Sequatchie, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
He farmed in his early years.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williamsfield Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Rux Funeral Home, Williamsfield, is in charge of arrangements.
Noonan, Edward D.

GALESBURG - Edward Daniel Noonan, 68, Galesburg, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004), in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
He was born May 1, 1935, in Monmouth, the son of Ward and Irene Dudrick Noonan.
He married Virgie Roberts. She is deceased.
Surviving are six sisters, Betty (and David) Anderson, Regina Noonan and Patricia (and Patrick) Holt, all of Galesburg, Dolores (and Nicholas) Campagna, Monmouth, Kathleen (and Thomas) Todie, Sparks, Nev., and Teresa (and William) Darwine, Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
He was reared and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School.
He was an Army veteran.
He retired from United Facilities in Galesburg, where he was a forklift operator.
Cremation has been accorded. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. No visitation or calling hours are planned. Private internment of ashes is planned by the family.

GALESBURG - Services for Ernest Oscar Nordberg, 85, Mooresville, Ind., formerly of Galesburg, who died Dec. 29, 2003, in Mooresville, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Norman Mendell officiating
He was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Duluth, Minn., the son of George T. and Lillie E. Anderson Nordberg.
He married Ada Olive Higgins. She died in 1953. He married Ethel Hackman. She died in 1992.
Surviving are a son, Ernest Gerald Nordberg, Holcomb, Kan.; six daughters, Sharen E. Shorey, Grand Rapids, Mich., Patricia Ann Martin, Seymour, Ind., Marilyn S. Casey, Mooresville, Ind., Donna Bacidore, Branson, Mo., Sharon Ann Johnson, Tampa, Fla., and Connie Sinnott, Leroy; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He worked as a foreman at Maytag for 25 years, retiring in 1981. He owned an A & W in Martinsville, Ind., for several years.
Cremation was accorded. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Military rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Alice R. "Jeanne" Norquist, 80, Lexington, died Thursday (Oct. 16, 2003) in Lexington Medical Center.
She was born in Galesburg, the daughter of Thomas Flaherty and Charlotte Olson.
Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Norquist, Lexington, S.C.; five daughters, Patrice (and Dan) Faverio, Sylvan Springs, Ala., Janice (and Steve) Casey, Hixson, Tenn., Karen (and Jim) Counts, Lexington, S.C., Barbara (and Dennis) Rauch, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Susan (and Gordon) Glasgow, Solon, Iowa; three brothers, Peter Olson and Ted Olson, both of Galesburg, and Stanley Olson, Delfield, Wis.; a sister, Joanne Hirshfield, Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson and a brother.
She had owned a floral shop. She was retired.
She lived in Thomson, Ga., for 20 years before moving to Lexington in 2001.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Corpus Christi Church, Lexington. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the home of Karen and Jim Counts in Lexington. South Carolina Cremation and Memorial Society is in charge of arrangements.

GALESBURG - John C. Nuccio Sr., 47, 668 N. Broad St., died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Dec. 29, 1955, in South Carolina, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Nuccio.
He married Marlene Fox on Nov. 22, 1998, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Paul Nuccio, USAF, Kessler, Miss., Robert Nuccio, USAF, Keflavik, Iceland, and John Nuccio Jr., Galesburg; six daughters, Heather Nuccio, Jacksonville, Fla., and Bambi English, Audra Krzeminski, Eleanore Krzeminski, Britney Krzeminski and Shawna Krzeminski, all of Galesburg; two brothers, Leonard Nuccio, Charleston, S.C., and Alvin Wilson, Ladson, S.C.; and a sister, Shirley Allen, Lexington, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He lived in Galesburg since 1998 and worked as a complex manager at Wisconsin Management in the Galesburg area.
Services were Friday at Lake Storey Pavilion. Cremation was accorded. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
