Ortery, Ella Mae

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Ella Mae Ortery, 70, Mount Pleasant, formerly of Monmouth, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 20, 2003) in her daughter's home in Mount Pleasant.
She was born May 17, 1933, in Monmouth, the daughter of Theodore and Ruth A. Lee Mettler.
She married Cecil E. Ortery on June 10, 1954, in Kirkwood.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Wanda (and Marvin) Day, Mount Pleasant; a son, Edwin E. (and Amy) Ortery, Rio; three sisters, Lois Tatman, Doris (and Chuck) Montgomery and Margaret Ann Brinton, all of Monmouth; a brother, William "Bill" Mettler, Dawson; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant child, Gerald, three brothers and two sisters.
She was reared and educated in Monmouth.
She worked at Western Stoneware in Monmouth and at Gale Products in Galesburg.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. Gerald Marlow officiating. Friends may call today and Thursday at the funeral home; family will be present from 7 to 8 tonight. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood.
Memorials may be made to the Henry County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Ortery, Earl E.
July 30, 2004
ABINGDON - Earl E. Ortery, 88, 404 S. Main St., died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday (July 29, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Dec. 15, 1915, in Monmouth, the son of George and Gladys Ishmael Ortery.
He married Billie W. Chenault on Aug. 20, 1937, in New London, Mo. She died Oct. 12, 1989.
Surviving are four sisters, Hazel Sheckles, Seaton, Bertha (and Albert) Finch, Keithsburg, Edith Turnquist, Yucca Valley, Calif., and Bettie Johanson, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and an infant sister.
He lived in Abingdon since 1941.
He worked at the former American Sanitary Manufacturing Company (Brass Factory) in Abingdon for more than 29 years, and later at Abingdon Pottery for three years, retiring in 1977.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg, with the Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy E. Owen
October 28, 2003
GALESBURG - Dorothy E. Owen, 97, a resident of Seminary Manor, died there at 3:15 a.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003).
She was born April 15, 1906, in Canton, the daughter of Myron and Bertha Mae Pollitt Beckstead.
She married John Harold Owen on Oct. 10, 1934, in Rock Island. He died May 5, 1974.
Surviving are nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
She graduated from Ramsey School of Anesthesia in 1932.
She worked as an anesthetist at Cottage Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center. She later owned and operated Knox Realty with her husband for 20 years until retiring.
Private family services will be Wednesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to any charity.

Page, Margaret I.

GALVA - Margaret I. Page, 85, Galva, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday (April 7, 2004), in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born Sept. 13, 1918, in Roseville, the daughter of Clyde and Daisy Mae Lamb McIntire.
She married Thomas Page on Dec. 27, 1939, in Potomac.
Surviving are her husband of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Allen (and Andrea) Page and Bill (and Joan) Page, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Dorothy Mooney, Texas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.
She graduated from Wethersfield High School and Kewanee Beauty School.
She worked as a licensed beautician and was a farm wife for many years.
She was a member of the LaFayette United Methodist Church where she served as membership secretary for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Gava Senior Citizen's Center and played in the harmonica band.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rux Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the West Jersey Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the LaFayette United Methodist Church or the Galva Senior Citizen's Center.

GALESBURG - Guyomia H. Paige, 99, 1015 E. South St., died at 8:08 a.m. today (July 30, 2004) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

Painter, Loren L.

SIX LAKES, Mich. - Loren L. Painter, 61, Lakeview, Mich., died Monday (Dec. 15, 2003) at home.
He was born June 10, 1942, in Galesburg, the son of Loren Ray and Florence Margaret Gibbs Painter.
He married Shirley Ann Powell on June 17, 1960, in Hernando, Miss.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Scott (and Maria) Painter, Six Lakes, Mich.; two daughters, Lori Painter, Rockford, and Jana (and Jim) Newman, Belding; a brother, Clinton (and Marie) Painter, Dearfield Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Jeri Sue Painter.
He was raised in the Galesburg area and attended Galesburg High School.
A Navy veteran, he served as a dental technician.
He worked as a supervisor at Gibson Manufacturing in Greenville, Mich. for 10 years and at Admiral Manufacturing in Galesburg from 1974 to 1978.
He was a lifetime member of the Sheridan VFW.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in New Life United Methodist Church, Six Lakes, with the Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brigham Funeral Chapel, Six Lakes. Burial will be in Cato Township Cemetery, Lakeview.
Memorials may be made to the Crohn's Disease Foundation or Hospice of Big Rapids.

Panther, Dale

GALESBURG - Dale Panther, 79, 1843 Indiana Drive, died at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2003), at Seminary Manor.
He was born June 20, 1924, in Galesburg, the son of George and Emma Kissinger Panther.
He married Virginia Graham on Sept. 28, 1946, in Galesburg. She died May 7, 1986.
Surviving are one son, Michael (and Mary) Panther, Galesburg; two sisters-in-law, Marian Carr and Jeanne Pogue, both of Galesburg; and two grandchildren.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II.
He was a tower operator for the Burlington Northern Railway for 42 years, retiring in 1984.
He served on the Costa Catholic School Board for 15 years; organized and supervised an intra-mural basketball program at St. Joseph and Costa schools for more than 20 years; was a founding member of the Railroad Museum and served on its board of directors; and was a member of the American Legion Ralph M. Noble Post 285, the Knights of Columbus Joseph O. Hunt Council 556, and Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary to be recited at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Corpus Christi Church or the Galesburg Railroad Museum.

DECATURVILLE, Tenn. - David Leroy Payne, 51, Decaturville, died Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003) at home.
He was born in Galesburg, the son of Ernest Wayne and Elva Louise Fitch Payne.
Surviving are a son, Donovan Payne, Houston, Texas; two daughters, Daveen Parrish and Dusty Rich, both of Waynesboro, Tenn.; his father of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; a brother, Danny Payne, Elcaon, Calif.; a sister, Dora King, Farmington, N.M.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother.
He was an Air Force veteran.
He worked as a machine operator.
Cremation was accorded. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel, Waynesboro, Tenn., with Jerry Robbins officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Peck, Donald C.

ABINGDON - Donald C. Peck, 78, 105 N. Harshbarger St., died at 12:10 a.m. Friday (Nov. 7, 2003) in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
He was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Abingdon, the son of Jesse and Edna F. Baldwin Peck.
He married Berneda M. Chambers on Aug. 26, 1963, in Abingdon. She died April 15, 1977.
Surviving are a sister, Doris Peck, Knoxville; a nephew, Kenneth Peck, Abingdon; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a medic from 1943 to 1945 and was awarded a Bronze Star.
He worked at Briggs Manufacturing Co. in Abingdon for 42 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Harry F. Wiles American Legion Post 381 and the Galesburg Rifle Club.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Abingdon Cemetery, with Eleanor Landon officiating and military honors by American Legion Post 381. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Knox County Nursing Home.

Pedigo, Mardelle

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Mardelle Pedigo, 75, 1767 Louis Place, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2003) at her home.
She was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Obert, Neb., the daughter of Ira and Nettie Thompson Cook.
She married Jack Pedigo on June 17, 1949, in Monmouth.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Lynette (and Bill) Lancial, Iowa City, Iowa, and Jill Hall, Whitefish Bay, Wis.; one brother, Francis (and Ann) Cook, Roseville; a sister-in-law, Vera Cook, Monmouth; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
She moved to Monmouth at the age of nine and lived there until her retirement, when they moved to Iowa City. She and her husband also spent time in Green Valley, Ariz.
She served as school secretary at Willits School in Monmouth for 27 years.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, with the Rev. Keith Kellinger officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Friends may call on Tuesday at the funeral home; family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be left to be designated later.

Pence, Milo Tate
January 23, 2004
MONMOUTH - Milo Tate Pence, infant son of Timothy Pence and Lacrissa Cooper, Monmouth, died at 11:26 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born Jan. 3, 2004, in Peoria.
Surviving are his parents; a brother, Timothy Pence, Galesburg; a sister, Trinity Pence, Monmouth; and his grandparents, Jim and Lynette Ferch and Mary Green, all of Monmouth, Jim Pence, Dallas City, and Jay and Tabitha Cooper, Oquawka.
Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Monmouth Cemetery. No visitation is planned.
A memorial is being established.
