MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Wilma Marie Phillips, 67, Mount Pleasant, formerly of Stronghurst, died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday (June 8, 2004), in the Arbor Court Nursing Home, Mount Pleasant.
She was born July 13, 1936, in Macomb, the daughter of Carl W. and Margaret Hale VanOrder.
She married Jack E. Phillips on Aug. 15, 1955, in Oquawka. He died June 22, 1985.
Surviving are one daughter, Rhonda Phillips, Mount Pleasant; two sons, Rodney Phillips, Stronghurst, and Jeff (and Darla) Phillips, Glendale, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
She lived in Stronghurst most of her adult life, and was a bookkeeper for the former C.E. Neff Company in Stronghurst for 28 years.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Stronghurst. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home; no family visitation is planned. Burial will be in the Carman Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Stronghurst Village Park Improvement Fund or Alzheimer's Disease Research.

SEASIDE, Calif. - Wilferd L. "Bud" Phillipsen, 82, Seaside, died Monday (Dec. 15, 2003) in Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, Seaside.
He was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Baron County, Wis., the son of William B. and Eva Skinvik Phillipsen.
He married Bernadine Batz on Dec. 14, 1941.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, William J. (and Terree Mestek) Phillipsen, Hayward, Wis., and Paul C. (and Sherry) Phillipsen, Shingles Springs, Calif.; three daughters, Sharon P. Hunter, Seaside, Calif., Janet P. (and Thomas G.) West, Galesburg, and Christine P. (and Lance) Jacobson, Pacific Grove, Calif.; three sisters, Joyce Borum, Scottsdale, Ariz., Wilma Thomas, Menasha, Wis., and Fern (and Charles) Schultz, Rhinelander, Wis.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
An Army veteran World War II, he was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and a citation for leading the first troops across the Po River in Italy.
He was agricultural attache to Trinidad-Tobago from 1967 to 1971, Japan from 1971 to 1975, Greece from 1975 to 1981 and Bulgaria from 1977 to 1981, when he retired.
Cremation was accorded. No services are planned. Burial will be later in Minong, Wis. Neptune Society of California was in charge of arrangements.

GALESBURG - John E. Pierce, 68, 291 Illinois Ave., died at 1:09 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Monmouth, the son of John L. and Dorothy Shaver Pierce.
He married Barbara Joan Magee on April 7, 1956, in Galesburg. She died Dec. 14, 1996.
Surviving are five sons, Larry M. Pierce, Jeff S. (and Janet) Pierce, John L. (and Patricia) Pierce, and Mark D. Pierce, all of Galesburg, and Donald E. (and Janice) Lobb, Winchester; a brother, Earl (and Chris) Ekstrom, Shelbyville, Ky.; seven sisters, Anna (and Max) Thurman, Galesburg, Bertha Nickel, Kalma, Wash., Darlene Bush, Jane Cook, and Nancy Bloomfield, all of Monmouth, Patty Kenney, Galva, and Mary Millard, Montgomery, Ind.; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.
He was an Army veteran.
He lived most of his life in the Galesburg area.
He worked as a conductor for Burlington Northern Railroad for 24 years, retiring in 1985.
He attended First Church of the Nazarene and Allen Park Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Cremation will be accorded after the visitation. Private services and burial will be later.

ROSEVILLE - Violet M. Pinney, 87, Freeport, formerly of Roseville, died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday (May 5, 2004), in Stephenson Nursing Center, Freeport.
She was born May 4, 1917, in Swan Creek, the daughter of Albert and Lucinda Buffum Smith.
She married Merlyn Pinney on Dec. 26, 1936.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Lanny (and Rayma) Pinney, Lena; a daughter, Judy Pinney, Muskogee, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Knori, Perry, Okla.; a sister, Norma Rogers, Hesperia, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, s son, Don Pinney, a sister, two brothers and a grandson.
She was raised and educated in the Roseville area.
She worked as an office manager for Dr. Mannon's Chiropractic Clinic in Monmouth for many years.
She was active in the Roseville Methodist Church where she was organist for many years.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Corman Memorial Home, with the Rev. Dianne Duncan officiating. Friends may call from noon Monday until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Stronghurst Cemetery.

GALESBURG - Florine A. Pittman, 88, formerly of East Moline, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday (May 6, 2004) in Galesburg Terrace.
She was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Blandinsville, the daughter of Leslie and Zena Brock Smith.
She married Thomas B. Stewart. He preceded her in death. She married William E. Pittman in 1947 in Peoria. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law who cared for her, Catherine Stewart-Breyette, Plattsburgh, N.Y.; two daughters, Norma J. (and Art) Hulen, Salida, Colo., and Pauline M. Ludwick, Port Byron; and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas F. Stewart, a brother and three sisters.
She was restaurant manager of the East Moline American Legion.
She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Women of the Moose in East Moline.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, Rock Island, with the Rev. Tom Akers officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.

KNOXVILLE - Ethel Loree Plath, 76, a resident of the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, died at 1:40 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 25, 2003) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Hazel Baker Bartusek.
She married Virgil E. Plath on March 17, 1945, in Mason City. He died July 17, 2003.
Surviving are four sons, Robert Plath, Monmouth, Lester (and Debbie) Plath and John (and Jaque) Plath, both of West Burlington, Iowa, and Randy (and Lori) Plath, Stronghurst; four daughters, Darlene Shankle, Keokuk, Iowa, Sharon (and Louis) Willits, Monmouth, and Sandra Marlett and Carol Forrester, both of Burlington, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece, a sister and a brother.
She was reared and educated in Mason City, Iowa.
She was a homemaker and worked as a nurse's aide in Fort Madison, Iowa, and at the Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, Iowa.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. Robert Adams officiating. Friends may call Wednesday at the funeral home; family will be present from noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be in Monmouth Cemetery.

ABINGDON - Albinus A. "Al" Pluemer, 91, formerly of Hampton, died Saturday (Dec. 6, 2003) in Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born Feb. 2, 1912, in Grant County, Wis., the son of Peter and Pauline Burkett Pluemer.
He married Mildred Reiley on July 17, 1952, in El Paso, Ill. She died Aug. 12, 1998.
Surviving are a sister, Delia Pluemer, Chicago; a brother-in-law, Jerry Reiley, Moline; three nieces; and eight nephews, including Joe (and Stormy) Reiley, St. Augustine.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and AMVETS.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, with military honors by East Moline American Legion Post 227 and VFW Post 2056.

ABINGDON - Doren E. Poland, 76, 506 E. Latimer St., died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born Aug. 18, 1927, in Roseville, the son of Charles Edwin and Lettie Marie Helton Poland.
He married Caryl Carlson on June 12, 1949, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; one son, David (and Sheri Owen) Poland, Galesburg; two daughters, Chris (and Jim) Morrison, Collinsville, and Patricia (and Ed) McDonald, Abingdon; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
He lived in Abingdon most of his life. He was a partner with his father and brother in the former Poland's Grocery Store in Abingdon for 25 years, he then operated Poland's Upholstery and later sold insurance for five years for Lincoln National Life. He then became a partner in the Abingdon Salvage Company for 20 years retiring in 1996.
He served as an alderman for the city of Abingdon for 20 years. He was a member of Abingdon Masonic Lodge AF&AM 185 for 44 years, serving as master of the lodge twice; was a Shriner for 40 years; was a past president and state director of the Illinois Jaycees; and was past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon for 58 years.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Assembly of God in Abingdon, with the Rev. John Carlson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.

GALESBURG - Ada Lee Potts, 68, 861 West South Street, died Thursday (July 22, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Oct., 22 1935, in Starksville, Miss., the daughter of Spencer and Panthier Laury Williams.
She married Mack E. Potts in 1978, in Starksville Miss.
Surviving are her husband; her mother, Pantier "Honey" Williams, Knoxville; two sons, Gary L. Williams, Dubuque, Iowa, and Waymond Hamilton, Minneapolis; one daughter, Millicent Allen, Silvis; one brother, Tannie Williams, Galesburg; one sister, Vera Porter, East St. Louis; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one cousin; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, one daughter and one granddaughter.
She came to live in Galesburg in 1950 where other members of her family had already relocated. She worked at Maytag Refrigeration Products for 31 years and was retired.
She was a member of UAW Local 2063 and received several certificates and awards.
She was a charter member of the New Home Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the first Usher Board president under the founding pastor, Rev. Wardell Cato Sr. She later served as president of the Mission Auxiliary.
Funeral will be at noon Friday at New Home Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry L. Cato officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fletcher and McDougald Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.
