Bessie M. Peterson

Bessie Marie Peterson, age 91, formerly of Altona and Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Bessie was born on March 22, 1916, Adams County, Kellerville, Illinois, the daughter of George and Bertha Hastings Syrkel. she attended Adams County Schools, rural Siloam Springs School. Bessie married Virgil F. Peterson on December 20, 1934 in Payson, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1989.
Prior to moving to Oquawka, Bessie and her family were long time residents of Altona. Bessie worked as a mental health technician at Galesburg Research Hospital, State of Illinois for nine years. She was homemaker in her own home where she enjoyed gardening and flowers. Bessie enjoyed fishing with Virgil. She also enjoyed the company of her dog, Penny. They also enjoyed wintering in Harlingen, Texas. She attended the Faith Bible Church of Oquawka. She was a member of the Oquawka Rebekah Lodge #360.
Bessie is survived by one daughter Linda M. and Pat Addis of Galesburg, Illinois, and one son Donald F. Peterson of Landstuhl, Germany, Six grandchildren, three step grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren. Also surviving is one daughter-in-law Stella E. Peterson of Oquawka.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one son John Peterson, four brothers and sisters.
Services: Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2008 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. Interment of her ashes will be in the Oneida Cemetery, Oneida, Illinois. A memorial fund is being established for the Oquawka Ambulance Service, The Henderson County Health Department or the Knox County Nursing Home. Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka is in charge of the arrangements.
Donald L. Alexander

Donald L. "Don" Alexander, age 67, of Monmouth; passed away at 4:20 am January 28, 2008 at his Monmouth residence. Don was born July 1, 1940 in Industry, Illinois and is the son of John S. and Jessie E. Kelly Alexander. Don was raised in Industry, and came to Monmouth when he was in the eighth grade. He attended and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1958. Don entered service joining the Army and served stateside in Massachusetts and New York during Viet Nam from 1963 - 1965. He attained the rank of Spec 5.
Don married Nancy K. Partington on July 29, 1962 in Monmouth, Illinois. She is surviving.
Don first worked at Cavanaugh Motors as a mechanic and pumping gas. Later he worked as a mechanic at the Ford Garage, then for Ray Green Motors, all in Monmouth. Lastly Don worked as a mechanic for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation and for several years was their traveling mechanic for five area counties.
Don's main interest was in his family and grandchildren.
He is a member of First Christian Church in Monmouth.
Don loved showing cars and attending car shows around the area.
He was a member of the Maple City Car Club and the National Street Rod Association.

Two Sisters Frances ( Leon ) Davis and Mary Frances Andersen, both of Macomb, Illinois.
Four Brothers John (Zola) Alexander of Macomb, Illinois, Joe (Joanne) Alexander of Davenport, Iowa, Charles ( Connie) Alexander of Reynolds, Illinois, Wayne (Laura) Alexander of Cooperstown, New York. Preceding Don in his death is his father John Alexander.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday January 31st at First Christian Church in Monmouth, with intermenty and military honors following at Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. His family plans a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois Memorials are designated for his church First Christian Church of Monmouth.
Elwood H. "Woody" Ball

Elwood H. " Woody " Ball, age 89, of Monmouth, passed away at 2:40 p.m., March 2, 2008, at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. "Woody" was born August 9, 1918 in Coldwater, Michigan, and was the son of Edgar and Alma Barker Ball. He was reared and educated in Battle Creek, Michigan where he attended local schools through High School. He then attended and received a Bachelor's degree in music from the University of Michigan at Ann Harbor. Elwood entered the Army Air Corp in 1942 and was a First Lieutenant serving in Italy, Africa, Southern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe and was discharged in 1945. Woody then returned to the University and earned his Master's degree, also in music. While in service, Elwood married Genevieve Joy Southworth at Camp Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "Woody" started playing the Organ and Pipe Organ when he was sixteen. After his college education, he came to Monmouth, Illinois and Monmouth College in 1953 where he served as a professor of music and also as Dean of Men and Dean of Students over the next thirty years. Woody established and served as the Director if the College's first Career Development Department prior to his retirement in 1983. He has been of the Presbyterian Faith since coming to Monmouth as a member of First United Presbyterian Church, then Grace United Presbyterian, and currently at Faith United Presbyterian Church. He has served as both a Deacon and Elder of his church. He also has been the Church organist and the Choir Director over that time and is currently titled as "Director of Music Ministry Emeritus. "Woody" enjoyed the Opera, bike riding, playing Golf, and photography. Music was his main Hobby and interest.
Surviving him is his Wife Genevieve Ball of Monmouth, Illinois; Three Daughters Janis Durr and Rob Wells of Charlotte, North Carolina; Judith Ball of Schaumburg, Illinois; and Pamela Gustafson and John of Plymouth, Minnesota.; One Son Gregory "Pete "Ball of Monmouth, Illinois.
Six Grandchildren also survive Briony,Ashley, and Ian Ball, Gregory Rebecca, and Benjamin Gustafson. Preceding "Woody" in his death are his Parents, Two Brothers, and One Sister.
Services: A memorial service will be at Faith United Presbyterian Church on Friday March 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Cremation has been accorded. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions are made to either Faith United Presbyterian Church, "Elwood Ball Memorial Music Fund" or "Monmouth College Elwood Ball Memorial Music Fund".

Scot A. Carver

Scot A. Carver, 37, of Monmouth, passed away at his residence on March 16, 2008. He was born on August 1, 1970 in Keokuk, Iowa the son of Thomas and Vaughn Welch Carver. Scot was reared and educated in the Monmouth area attending Monmouth Schools and graduating from Warren School.
While at Warren Scot played varsity football.
Scot was marred to Michelle Ande.
Scot was first and foremost a single father raising three girls. He devoted his soul and spirit to doing his best to take care of them, playing games yet teaching them to be strong. His love of fishing continued his entire life which led to his career at Carver Wholesale Bait and Tackle. He was warehouse manager and had recently taken over purchasing. Scot's hobbies also included being a D.J., doing weddings and various other events. He gave this up to take care of his girls.
Scot was a first-class duck caller and hunter and was teaching his girls the sport.
Scot belonged to the Warren County Ducks Unlimited, Warren County Sportsmen Club, Honey Creek Gun Club and Monmouth Eagles Aeries.
He is survived by three daughters Cheyenne Carver, Kayla Carver and Maggie Jo Carver all of Monmouth, his parents Thomas and Vaughn Carver of Monmouth, one brother Matthew (Brenda) Carver of Galesburg, Illinois, grandmother Mary Welch of Brooklyn, Iowa and one niece and one nephew.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather, and one uncle.
Services: A gathering of family and friends will be on Wednesday, March 19, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a service of remembrance at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. A memorial fund is being established for the benefit of his three daughters. Cremation will be accorded following the service.
Jimmie D. Johnson

Jimmie D. Johnson, age 75, of Biggsville, Illinois, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. Jimmie was born on February 23, 1933, in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Ralph N. and Edith Webb Johnson.
He was reared and educated in LaHarpe and graduated from LaHarpe High School 1951.
Jimmie served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He married Phyllis K. Turner on November 19, 1960 in Monmouth, Illinois. She survives.
Jimmie was a life-long horse trainer, owning and operating Twin J Stables. He had a Roman-riding act he performed on his matching paint horses "Trigger" and "Calico" in the 1950's. He enjoyed showing and training horses, saddle repair, gardening and baling hay.
He was a member of the American Paint Horse Association and the Illinois State Stock Horse Association.
Jimmie is survived by his wife, Phyllis Johnson of Biggsville, one daughter Julie Pence and Steve of Lomax, Illinois, one granddaughter Samantha Scott of Lomax, and several step grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister.
Services: Cremation has been accorded.
The family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois, on Monday, May 19, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening.
A memorial fund is being established for either Rainbow Riders in Monmouth or the Lomax Saddle Club.
Iris Faye Gillen

Iris Faye Gillen, age 78, passed away at 1:30 p.m., May 27, 2008, at her residence in Galesburg, Illinois. Faye was born on May 6, 1930 in Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Claude and Sarah Dant Walters. She was reared and educated Monmouth attending Monmouth Public Schools. She married Billy Junior Gillen on February 7, 1948. He preceded her in death on March 29, 2008.
Faye owned and operated Fay's El Combo Decorative Dolls in Larchland, Illinois for a number of years. She loved going to the boat and playing slots, she enjoyed sewing, and enjoyed going to the "Oaks" and playing bingo and taking part in other social activities. Faye also enjoyed her monthly card club. She was a devout Catholic, and loved more than anything, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Faye is survived by two sons, Shawn Gillen and Alisa of Cameron, Illinois, and Casey Gillen of Surprize, Arizona, two daughters Sarah Williamson and Wesley of Chillicothe, Illinois and Garda Tatum and Curt of Fayetteville, North Carolina Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brothers and four sisters.
Services: A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Monmouth Cemetery. No calling hours are planned. A memorial fund is being established.
Katherine "Katie" E. Peterson

Katherine E. "Katie" Peterson, age 83, of Gladstone, Illinois, passed away at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.
Katherine was born on July 28, 1924, in Stronghurst the daughter of Lewis D. and Mattie Burr Dalton.
Katherine was raised in rural Gladstone area. She attended Bluffdale rural school and graduated from Biggsville High School.
Katie married Fred Peterson on November 27, 1950 in Gladstone. He survives.
Katie first worked at Ross Manufacturing for a time and later for a number of years as an inspector at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa as well as other various other employments.
She enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening and baking cookies. She loved cooking meals for family and friends and traveling to see her sister in Ohio, but her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her main interest.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Peterson of Gladstone, three daughters, Karen Ford of Gladstone, Hazel "Sue" Stuart of Gladstone, Garnett Kelly of West Burlington, Iowa, two sons Frederick Peterson and Carol of Burlington, Iowa and Charles Peterson of West Burlington, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Frances Chatt of Port Clinton, Ohio.
Preceding Katie in her death are her parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
Services: A graveside service and intermenty will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois. Her family will be present at Turnbull Funeral Home in Biggsville from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14.
Julia E. Schreiber

Julia E. Schreiber, age 87, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at St. Joseph Hospital while at her winter home in Tucson, Arizona on December 29, 2007. Julia was born on July 29, 1920 in Hamlet, North Carolina and was the daughter of Asa C. and Cora Williamson Edwards. She graduated from Tabor City, North Carolina High School and then received her teacher's certificate from East Carolina Teacher College in Greenville, North Carolina.
Julia married Carl Joseph Schreiber on May 15, 1944 in Granite City, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1978. During World War II Julia first worked for the Army Air Corp in Washington, D.C. She then came to Monmouth and was employed at Illinois Banker Life Insurance for a number of years. Julia then taught school at the Little York Elementary School for 21 years until her retirement. During that time she also was employed at Bowman Colwell Department Store in Monmouth. Julia was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the National Educational Association, the Rose Hawthorne Book Club, numerous Bridge Clubs, and volunteered at the Hospital Auxillaries in both Monmouth and Tucson, Arizona. Julia enjoyed between bridge games, sitting in the sun, reading books, and spending endless time with her children, and grandchildren discussing the activities of the other kids.
Surviving are four daughters ; Julia Allaman and husband Davi d of Grafton, Virginia; Sue Fechter and husband William of Seymour, Indiana; Nancy Carder and husband Chuck of Charleston, South Carolina and Mary Dooley and husband Ron of Bloomington, Indiana. Two sons; John C. Schreiber and wife Janis of Macomb, IL and James E. Schreiber and wife Kenda of East Lansing, Michigan .
Her grandchildren ; Christin Jones (husband Patrick) ; Caryn Treder (husband Danny) ; Kayla Smith (husband Mike) ; Brant Fechter; Robert Carder; Greg Carder (wife Joy); Jonna Schreiber, Julie Schreiber; Austin Schreiber; Louise Schreiber; and Stuart Schreiber.
Her Great Grandchildren ; Brandon Allaman; Brian Allaman; Ashley Bush ; Cameron Jones; Savannah Smith; and Ellie Treder.
Preceding Julia in her death are her parents, her Husband Carl, a granddaughter Carla Allaman, one sister Susie (Graham) Mahala and one brother Aca C Edwards II.
Services: Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 5, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth, Illinois at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be in St.Mary's Cemetery also in Monmouth, IL. Her family plans to recite the Rosary on Friday evening at 6:30 pm and will receive friends following the Rosary at Turnbull Funeral Home of Monmouth, IL. Beulah B. McDonald

Beulah B. McDonald, age 92, of LaSalle, Michigan, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 8:44 a.m. of Friday, January 25, 2008, at the home of her daughter. Beulah was born on July 31, 1915, in Concord, Morgan County, Illinois, the daughter of James A. and Lillie Layel Miller. She was reared and educated in the Concord Schools and received an associates degree.
Beulah first married Harold K. Cox, Sr. in 1934 in Morgan Co. She later married Charles McDonald in Morgan Co.
Beulah worked at war time factories in both Jacksonville, Illinois and Middletown, Iowa. While in Oquawka she worked at a Shelter Care that was a home for elderly women with special needs retiring in 1980. She enjoyed crossword puzzle, reading, canning and making jellies. She was a caring person and enjoyed taking food to her neighbors.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary and Joe Schlichte of LaSalle, and Sandra K. and Thurman Carpenter of Dayton, Ohio, two sons Harold K. and Janis Cox, Jr. of Rushville, Illinois and Ronald K. and Sue Cox of Springfield, Illinois, two grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren and one sister Ruby Fordyce of Washington, Indiana.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, one granddaughter, three sisters and one brother and a long time companion John Dughman
Services: A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. Interment will be in the Center Grove Cemetery in Kirkwood, Illinois. Her family will receive friends at Turnbull's from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday
Avis V. Schlicker

Avis Vivian Schlicker, age 89, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 10:00 am at Trinity West in Rock Island, Illinois. Avis was born February 13, 1918 in Bemidji, Minnesota. and is the daughter of Peter and Maude Ellen (Ames) Rice. Her early life was in Bemidji, she moved to McAllen, Texas in 1930 and Graduated from McAllen High School in McAllen, Texas. She married Reverend Harold John Albert Schlicker on June 1, 1943 in McAllen, Texas. While in McAllen Avis was employed as an operator of Bell Telephone Company. Avis was an untiring help mate with her husband as they ministered in Del Rio, Katy, and Pattison, Texas; Bible Grove, and Manito, Illinois; and Unionville, Michigan, and Shell Rock, Iowa. Avis last lived in Readlyn, Iowa before coming to Monmouth, Illinois in 1989. Avis was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and lifelong member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid. She currently is a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Avis' faith, family, and outreach to others were her life focus.
Surviving Avis are two daughters Janice Anderson ( Arthur ) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Evelyn Volz ( Kurt ) of Monmouth, Illinois. Four Sons David Schlicker ( Esther) of Cologne, Minnesota., Melvin Schlicker ( Marlene ) of Bellingham, Washington, Arden Schlicker ( Chris ) of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and Richard Schlicker ( Marion ) of Reed City, Michigan.
Grandchildren Dana Gillespie, Melanie Schlicker, Tonia Pearse, Donald Schlicker, Tavis Schlicker, Nathan Volz, Phillip Schlicker, Emalie Cobb, Kayla Schlicker, Kathleen Volz, Bonnie Schlicker, Kelsey Schlicker, Laura Volz, Megan Schlicker, Caitlin Volz.
Thirteen Great Grandchildren also survive.
She is also survived by her sister, Clarice Anderson ( Erick ) of Grass Valley, California. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, son Donald, and a brother Lawrence Rice
Services: A funeral service for Avis is planned on Saturday February 2nd at 9:00 am at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. Her family plans to receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Memorial funds have been designated for either Lutheran Bible Translators or the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
Marilyn G. Thornton

Marilyn G. Thornton entered into rest at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at her home in Monmouth, Ill. She was born Jan. 30, 1928, in Roseville, Ill. to the late Doren and Dorothy Ditch Hixson.
She was the devoted wife of Lionel A. Thornton since June 4, 1949 until his recent death. She is survived by her beloved children, two sons, Charles (Robin) and Chris, both of Conn.; two daughters, Kathryn Withenbury (Thomas) of Monmouth, and Karen Boroski (Robert) of Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her beloved nine-year-old daughter, Kimberly, who succumbed to cancer in 1975.
She was raised and educated in Roseville and Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1946. She also graduated from Brown Business College and attended the University of Iowa. In 1955 she and her husband moved to Connecticut where they raised their family along with caring for 25 foster infants.
She was a medical secretary for Drs. Dolan, Berger, and Feirstein in Huntington, Conn. until 1979 when she relocated to Greenville, S.C. with her husband. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, needlepoint, knitting, and crocheting. In 1986 she and her husband retired to their hometown of Monmouth and wintered in Florida.
Services: Friends may call on Tuesday, February 19 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Ill. where her family plans to receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00. A graveside service will follow.

Larry D. Bogart

Larry Dean Bogart, 66, of Kirkwood, Illinois, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born December 15, 1941, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Harold and Suzanna Burdick Bogart. He married Diana Staff on August 27, 1967, in Galesburg, Illinois. Along with his wife, he is survived by his son, Greg Bogart, of Rockford, Illinois, and his daughter, Jane Bogart, of Springfield, Illinois.
Larry worked in various capacities of the retail grocery business, including ownership of stores in Kirkwood, IL and Biggsville, IL. He retired in July 2007. He was an Army veteran honoring the call of his county during the Vietnam War. Larry enjoyed his leisure time reading books, watching movies and spending time with his family. Everyone who knew him enjoyed his unique sense of humor.
Services: Cremation has been accorded and burial will be at a later time. Memorials may be made to the Warren County Public Library in Monmouth, Illinois. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of arrangements.
