Keith Slover
Announcement date: 2008-03-17
Keith Slover. age 81, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 3:15 am, March 17, 2008, in his home after a battle with cancer. Keith was born on May 6, 1926 in Bald Bluff Township, Illinois the son of Fred and LaVern Cooper Slover. He was reared and educated in the Oquawka area graduating from Oquawka Township High School in 1944. Keith served on the Shore Patrol in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1948.
Keith married Bessie E. Keever on September 25, 1948 in Oquawka. She survives.
He worked on the C.B. and Q. railroad until an accident left him disabled in 1956.
Keith was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3629. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and the machines at the Eagles Club, Coin Collecting and watching the Cubs and the Fighting Illini. His main interest was his family and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife Bessie Slover of Oquawka, three daughters Nina (Gale) Hurt, Lori (Mic) Cochran and Linda Lock all of Oquawka, eleven grandchildren, Keith (Joann) Hurt of Oquawka, David Hurt of Oquawka, Kendrah Adams of Macomb, Illinois, Jacob, Megan, and Courtney Cochran all of Oquawka, Adam Slover of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ashley Ericson of Ellijay, Georgia, and Lexi Rodgers, Lilly and Lanee Lock all of Oquawka and two great grandchildren Taylor Loving of Kirkwood, Illinois and Emma Slover of Iowa City, Iowa. Also surviving is one sister, Ruth Allen, of Oquawka.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Wendell and Richard.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. Interment with military honors will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka on Wednesday, March 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial fund is being established for either the Henderson County Hospice or Faith Bible Church.

Clyde W. "Sonny" Woods Jr.

Clyde W. "Sonny" Woods Jr., 80, of 1790 23rd Ave., Avon (formerly of Monmouth, Illinois and Winter Haven, Florida) died Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Avon Nursing Home.
He was born May 4, 1927 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Clyde Woods Sr. and Bernice (Skiles) Woods. He was raised in Monmouth and attended the Monmouth public schools. He graduated from Monmouth High School in 1945.
He was a member of the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
He was self-employed in a variety of business ventures in the Monmouth and Galesburg areas. He owned farms in rural Berwick.
He was married to JoAnn Sherman with whom he had three daughters, Barbara, Sharon and Marilyn. He was later married to Patricia Farrell, with whom he had one daughter, Mary (Jon) Prain of Avon, Illinois
He is survived by his daughters and by two grandchildren, Elizabeth Prain and Robert Prain. He is also survived by one sister, Jean Zalba, of Crockett, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a past member of American Legion Posts and VFW Posts in both Illinois and Florida.
Services: Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am, Friday, March 28th at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. A graveside service with military honors will be at Monmouth Cemetery immediately following the visitation. Memorials may be made to the Avon Nursing Home.

R. Michael "Mike" Cavanaugh

R. Michael "Mike" Cavanaugh, age 64, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at his residence. Mike was born on February 25, 1944, in Monmouth, the son of Robert and Mary Strong Cavanaugh. Mike was born and raised in the Monmouth area, and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1962. Mike then attended Iowa Wesleyan College. He married Nancy Ann Kissinger on October 26, 1962. She preceded him on May 8, 2003. He lived in the Fairfield, Iowa area for a time in 1963. Mike first worked for Moore Business Forms in Peoria in sales. He then went to work in the family business at Cavanaugh's Motors as a salesman in Monmouth. Mike most recently worked at the Monmouth Drivers License Facility as a license examiner. In his earlier years, Mike, taught the Dale Carnegie Course.
Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, skeet and trap shooting, antiques, loved history, traveling, and boating on the Mississippi River.
He was a member of Monmouth JC's, Ducks Unlimited and the Republican Party.
Mike is survived by one daughter, Laura B. Cavanaugh of Oswego, Illinois, three sons Michael F. Cavanaugh and GongLi of Taipei, Taiwan , Matthew R. Cavanaugh of Moline, Illinois and Sean H. Cavanaugh of Bettendorf, Iowa, three grandchildren; Elizabeth C. Smith, and Andrew F. and James M. Cavanaugh, and one sister, Patti Cheesman and Ed of Galesburg, Illinois. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Nancy.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Monmouth. Interment will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth. Friends may call on Sunday after Noon at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth where his family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
A memorial fund is being established for Ducks Unlimited and the Children's Room at the Warren County Library.

David L. Whiteside

David L. Whiteside, age 58, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at his residence earlier this year and most recently identified as the deceased. David was born January 27, 1949 in LaHarpe, Illinois and is the son of William and Bessie Lehr Whiteside. He was reared and educated in Roseville, and attended school there and in Monmouth. David graduated from Monmouth High School in 1968. He then went to floral school in Danville, Illinois and in Chicago, Illinois
After college David returned to Monmouth and began Whitey's Greenhouse in 1971 and continued to operate to the present. David also was a USDA Food Safety Inspector working for over twenty years at the processing plant here in Monmouth. While Dave was in High School he worked for Ruth Arling at the Maple City Floral Company and then for Paul Chapin and "Paul The Florist"
He also was employed also at Killey Cleaners in Monmouth for a time. Dave enjoyed his family and friends, hunting and fishing, and being in the out of doors.
Surviving David is his Mother Bessie Whiteside of Monmouth, Illinois, Two Sisters; Betty & Roy Dober of Monmouth, Illinois; Roberta and Richard Stone of Springfield, Ohio. Four Brothers Dale Whiteside of Monmouth, Illinois; Steve Whiteside of Oquawka, Illinois; Merle Whiteside of Roseville, Illinois; and William Whiteside Jr. and Rosemary of Smithshire, Illinois. David's sister in law, Carol Whiteside also is surviving and resides here in Monmouth.
David is preceded in his death by his Father, a Brother Don, and a Sister Anna Fern.
Services: A funeral service will be at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm. His family plans to receive friends for the hour prior to the service from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the funeral home on Saturday. Interment will be in Monmouth Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established for the Arbor Day Foundation.

Robert C. Boughton

Robert C. Boughton, age 71, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. Robert was born on January 17, 1937, near Stronghurst, the son of Robert and Eunice Waterman Boughton. He was reared and educated in Galesburg, attending Galesburg Schools.
Robert married Bonnie Cook in Galesburg.
Robert worked most of his life doing construction and carpentry. He liked to fish and go mushrooming.
He is survived by one daughter Mary Kay Boughton, two sons, Robert Boughton and Mark Boughton and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Also surviving are Linda Lee of Decatur, Illinois and Peggy Nelson of Canton and two brothers Larry Boughton of Deland, Illinois and Gary Boughton of Galesburg.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one son Brian Boughton.
Services: Cremation has been accorded. No calling hours or service is being planned by his family

R. Elizabeth Bethell

Elizabeth "Libby" Bethell, age 79, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 3:00 am on May 22, 2008 at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Elizabeth was born May 9, 1929 in rural Monmouth, and is the daughter of Chalmer and Rachael Monticue Lovdahl. She was raised in the Monmouth area and attended local rural schools and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1948. She attended AIT Business School in Davenport, Iowa. She married Paul Bethell on February 23, 1950 in Monmouth. He survives.
Libby was a bookkeeper for 47 years at the Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac dealerships to include; Barrows and Addlemen, Ray Green Motors, Jack O'Brian Motors, and Bruce Foote.
She retired in 1995. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth. Libby enjoyed crocheting, camping, loved cooking out with her family, playing on the computer, enjoyed watching Soaps, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Paul J. Bethell of Monmouth, one daughter, Deborah Skees Dotson of Macomb, and one son Dennis Bethell and Susie of Monmouth, grandchildren; Pete Skees of McHenry, Illinois, Jason Skees of Macomb, Jeremy Skees of Macomb, and Amy Rogers of Monmouth. Also surviving are ten great grandchildren, one sister, Becky Hartman and Reverend Henry of Nickerson, Kansas, four brothers Creighton Lovdahl and Barbara, of Monmouth, Martin Lovdahl and Renie of Oquawka, Illinois, Cecil Lovdahl and Kay and Jim Lovdahl and Suzanne both of Monmouth, two sisters-in-law Judy Lovdahl of Monmouth and Bonnie Lovdahl of Senatobia, Mississippi.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; John and Ted and two sisters; Bessie Snider and Blanche Icenogle and one infant sister and one infant brother.
Services: A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in the Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg. The family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull's on Saturday from Noon to 1:00 p.m. A memorial fund is being established for the Warren County Relay for Life.

Doris M. Davis

Doris M. Davis, age 88, of Roseville, Illinois, passed away at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at the Care Center of Abingdon. Doris was born January 1, 1920, in Ponemah, Illinois. the daughter of Edgar L. and Nellie Jones Pratt. She was reared and educated in the Prairie City, Illinois and Raritan, Illinois area.
Doris married Harlan L. Davis, Sr. July 22, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa and later married Robert Bush on January 26, 1967 in Palmyra, Missouri.
Doris was homemaker. She first was employed as a seamstress at Formfit Company of Monmouth. She then was a trash hauler in the area for a time. She then was in housekeeping at Monmouth Hospital and lastly at worked at Glastex Boat Factory.
Doris loved fishing, hunting, nature and animals.
She is survived by Harlan L. Davis, Jr. and Barbara of Roseville, and one sister, Bonnie Briggs of Galesburg, Illinois. Also surviving are five nieces and one nephew and a number of other relatives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one son Jack and a number of brothers and sisters.
Services: A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Illinois. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth.
The family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull's on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Marion R. "Bunk" Flatt
Announcement date: 2008-06-16
Marion R. "Bunk" Flatt, age 70, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 6:00 am on Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his residence. Bunk was born on December 4, 1937 in Alexis, Illinois, the son of Elmer and Edith Southern Flatt. He was reared and educated in the Kirkwood, Media area and graduated from Media High School in 1956. In 1957 he attended Diesel Technical School in St. Louis, Missouri. Bunk married Bonnie L. Bultemeier on February 8, 1957 in Media, Illinois. She preceded him in death on February 21, 2007. Bunks family and Grandchildren were his greatest joy.
Bunk first owned a feed and fertilizer business in Stronghurst, while farming and doing custom farming. In 1968, he started work with George Gaskill Electric. In 1972 he began Flatt's Electric and later added Flatt's Pump & Well Service, which they operate to today and into the future. Bunk was a founder of the Cameron Fourth of July Tractor Pull and Tractor Show. He was an avid Farmall collector and enjoyed antique tractor pulling. He was a founder and member of the Maple City Antique Tractor Club and a member of the Bald Bluff Antique Tractor Pulling Association. He was active in and a past president of the Warren County Prime Beef Festival. He served on the Central Warren County Fire Protection District and the Lenox Township Board. He was a former member of the Honda Goldwing Club. He is survived by three daughters, Chrissi (Jeff) Ryner of Alexis, Illinois, Cathi (Roger) Watson of Cameron, Illinois and Carrie (Larry) Sampson of Nauvoo, Illinois, one son Kevin (Kathy) Flatt of Monmouth, seven grandchildren, Cody and Chase Flatt, Luke, Rachel, and Erik Watson and Blake and Brooke Ryner. Also surviving is three brothers, Jack Flatt of Alexis, Mert (Bonnie) Flatt of Media and Curt (Rita) Flatt of Burlington, Iowa and a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his Parents and Wife Bonnie.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Media, Illinois. Bunk's family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A memorial fund is being established for Cameron Fire Department or Cameron Ball Park.

Weona M. Erickson

Weona M. Erickson, age 80, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at the Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, on Wednesday July 9, 2008 at 7:30 pm. Weona was born on November 4, 1927 in Terre Haute, Illinois and is the daughter of Arval T. and Susie M. Elston Shoemate. She was raised in Terre Haute and attended the local schools and the Terre Haute High School.
Weona married John E. Erickson on September 22, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2003. Weona was employed many years at "Levine's " Music Store in Monmouth. She then was employed from 1963 to 1988 in the office of the Warren County Assessor. She also served in the Elections Registration Department for the county. In 1967 Weona and John purchased and managed the Sealtest Dairy in Monmouth and the Meadow Gold Distributorships locally until 1977.
Earlier she was active in the Republican Women. She loved gardening, flowers and riding horses. Her greatest love was her family and grandchildren.
Surviving Weona are three sons John E. Erickson Jr. and Joyce of Coon Valley, Wisconsin, Craig Erickson and Janis of Chaseburg, Wisconsin, and Brad Erickson and Kris of Westby, Wisconsin and
her daughter, Julie M. Erickson of Petersburg, Illinois.
Weona has grandchildren Dana, Nathan, Joshua, Bryan, Erin, Megan (Erickson) McCarthy, Tyler and Amanda.
and one Great Granddaughter Kaitlyn Erickson as well as numerous Nieces and Nephews
She is preceded in her death by her Parents, Her Husband, One Brother Bruce Shoemate.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at First Lutheran Church in Monmouth. Interment will be in Monmouth Cemetery in Monmouth. Her family will be present at the Church on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
A memorial fund is being established for Rainbow Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center in Monmouth.

Raymond Hume Jr.
Announcement date: 2007-12-23
Raymond Hume Jr., 69, of Oquawka, passed away at 9:20 a.m., Sunday, December 23, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Oquawka, Illinois. Raymond was born on February 22, 1938 in Rushville, Illinois. He is the son of Raymond Sr. and Helen Haber Hume. He was reared and educated in the Monmouth area, and attended Monmouth Public Schools. Raymond married Sandra Maney on January 23, 1960, in Canton, Illinois; she preceded him on April 13, 1988. Raymond first went to work for Wilson Foods in Monmouth and worked in maintenance. He then worked for the Warren County Housing Authority, and worked in maintenance, he retired in 2005, after working for several years. After retiring, he spent his last years enjoying his family and friends. He enjoyed playing card games, fishing, and watching sports, especially football, he was a die hard Green Bay Packers fan.
Survivors include two daughters; Lori Ferch and Jeff of Monmouth, Tracey Laws and Robert of Oquawka, two sons; Tony Hume and Vicky of Monmouth, Scott Hume and Amy of Monmouth, one brother; Howard Hume of Monmouth, two sisters; Joyce Wickline of Monmouth, and Sandy Abbadusky of Monmouth. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, both parents, one sister, two brothers and one grandchild.
Services: A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 28, 2007, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, December 27, 2007, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., where his family will be present to receive friends. A memorial fund will be designated at a later date. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.

Whitey Talbott
Announcement date: 2007-12-29
Leland "Whitey" Talbott, 73, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Trinity Park Terrace in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was born on February 6, 1934, in Biggsville, Illinois, to Riley and Leona Talbott. Whitey was raised in the Little York area. He moved to Monmouth in 1958 and married Doris Partington. Whitey was a Corporal serving in the United States Marine Corp first in Camp Pendelton, also in Japan and Hawaii. Whitey was a member of the First Christian Church, The Home Builders Sunday School Class, and a Deacon for many years. For a time he owned and operated his fathers business, Talbott Distributors, which specialized in farm implements. Selling cars for over forty five years gave him the opportunity to make many friends, and his success was attributed to his honesty with the customer. Whitey's career started at Thompson Motors in the 1960's and ended at Cavanaugh Motors in October of 2007. Spring was his favorite season, and he loved spending time doing yard work and gardening. Whitey's biggest enjoyment was spending time with his family and the many countless hours playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Doris Talbott of Monmouth, one daughter Lynne Dulin and Gary of Monmouth and one son Mark Talbott and Jeani of Galesburg, Five grandchildren; Madelyn, Riley, and Meredith Dulin, and Connor and Lauren Talbott. One sister Marilyn Talbott of Sacramento, California and one brother Dean Talbott and Bonnie of Cambridge, Illinois. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Evelyn Kessinger, and two brothers; Howard Talbott, and Donald Talbott
Services: Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service with military honors will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2007, at the First Christian Church in Monmouth. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 3, 2007, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where his family will be present to receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Christian Church in Monmouth or The Ronald McDonald House. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements

Thelma E. Fisher-Marzahn

Thelma E. Fisher-Marzahn, 98, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 7:55 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, Extended Care, OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Thelma was born on March 23, 1909 , in Stoneham, Mass . the daughter of Seth and Effie Look.
Thelma married Howard Fisher on October 25, 1928 in Linneus, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1988. She later married Mason Marzahn
Thelma was a former member of the DAR. She served as a District and Conference officer of the former Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church.
Thelma was a minister's daughter and wife. They moved to Kirkwood in 1964 serving the Methodist Church until Howard retired in 1971.
After Howard's death she married Mason Marzahn and lived in Waterville, Minn. for brief time
Thelma returned to live in the Kirkwood and Monmouth area.
Thelma is survived by two daughters-in-law Marie Fisher of Stronghurst, Illinois and Gail Fisher of Des Plaines, Illinois, one granddaughter Cynthia Fisher and Steve Good of Westchester, Penn., and three grandsons James and Charleen Fisher of Stronghurst, Mark Fisher of Glenview, Illinois and Glenn and Jill Fisher of Johnsburg, Illinois, five great grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two sons Harold D. Fisher and Wendell A. Fisher and two sons who died in infancy and one brother.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2008, at the Kirkwood United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 on Friday. A memorial fund is being established for either Kirkwood United Methodist Church or Autism Society of Illinois. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
