Mrs. Josephine Shifley, 83, of 1250 W. Carl Sandburg Dr. Galesburg, IL, died at 6:30 PM Friday January 5, 2001 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, IL. Her funeral will be 1:30 PM Tuesday January 9, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Tom Ek, Rev. James Eklund, and Rev. David Bultemeir officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to Covenant Church or Lifeline at Cottage Hospital.
She was born on March 28, 1917 in Leipsic OH to Robert S. and Mary (Anderson) Lowery. She married Charles E. Hartley in Galesburg on August 14, 1938. He preceded her in death on December 24, 1974. She then married E. Wendell Shifley in Galesburg on November 11, 1977. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1985.
She worked in the Trust Department of First National Bank for 10 years, retiring in 1979. She worked for the Macomb Radio WKAI from 1958-1968 Announcing the "Current Comment". She was a manager of the Little Swan Lake Avon, IL. She was a member of the Covenant Church. She was a member of the Cottage Hospital Guild, the Junior Alums, and she was a volunteer at Cottage Hospital. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1934. She graduated from Browns Business College and Knox Conservatory.
She is survived by a son, Richard Hartley of Crystal Lake, IL; three daughters, Linda Bettisworth of Crystal Lake, IL, Sarah Metzger of Ithaca, NY and Carol Michalek of Denver, CO; a stepdaughter, Susan Alburtis of San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Donald E. Palmer, 81, of 1424 E. Fremont Street Galesburg, IL, died at 12:55 PM Friday January 5, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. His funeral will be 10:00 AM Tuesday January 9, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Mike Van Acker officiating. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday January 8, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 285 or Knox County Humane Society.
He was born on October 27, 1919 in Galesburg to Charles Clark and Ruth (Watkins) Palmer. He married Marguerite Johnson in Winona MN on December 30, 1948. She survives.
He was a Glazier for the former Galesburg Glass Company for 37 years, retiring in 1983. He lived in Galesburg his entire life. He was a life long member of the Glaziers Architectural Metal and Glass #581 in Rock Island, IL. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285, the 40/8 Knox County Voiture #606, and the Little John Conservation Club. He served in U.S. Army-Air Force from 1941-1945 in the Medical Corp in Hamilton Field in California as a Staff Sergeant.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Palmer of Galesburg, IL; a son, Jeffrey Palmer of Galesburg IL; a sister Mary E. Hanson of Galesburg IL; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret May Spencer, 81, of 280 E. Losey St. Galesburg, IL, died at 11:15 AM Friday January 5, 2001 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL. Private family services will be held on Monday January 8, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Jerry Webb officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 6:30PM to 8:00 PM. Sunday January 7, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Church of God.
She was born on December 12, 1919 in Kirksville MO to William A. and Opal I. (Dawdy) McGraw. She worked as a Mental Health Aide for 23 years. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939. She was a member of the First Church of God. She has lived in Missouri, Southern Illinois and Galesburg area.
Survivors include a son, Richard Hilligoss of Galesburg, IL and a daughter, Irma Mathews of Topeka KS, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Miss Kathryn I. Berg, 70, of 515 E. Euclid Avenue Monmouth, IL, died at 1:00 AM Friday January 5, 2001 at Pinewood Health Care Center, Monmouth, IL. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Monday January 8, 2001 at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, with Rev. G. Harold Ahlberg officiating. Memorials may be made to Pinewood Health Care Center.
She was born on February 2, 1930 in Galesburg to Marshall and Gladys (Johnson) Berg. She was a member of the Covenant Church in Galesburg.

Mr. Leonard L. Cole, 57, of 685 S. Seminary St. Galesburg, IL, died at 8:27 PM Wednesday January 3, 2001 at Decedent's Residence, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Saturday January 6, 2001 at Vance Cemetery, Industry, IL with Chaplain Ron Green officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday January 5, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Family.
He was born on August 5, 1943 in Macomb IL to Cecil O. and Nellie F. (Rhodes) Cole. He married Ruth Ann Elliott and then Cheryl Hughes in Galesburg.
He was a side loader operator at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg for 32 years. He served in the Army and was a member of the United Steel Workers.
He is survived by a stepson, Steve Hughes of Galesburg IL; three brothers Cecil Paul Cole of Amarillo TX, Twin brother Leland L. Cole of Anna IL and Terry L. Cole, Sr. of Galesburg, IL; a grandson, Ian Hughes, two nieces, one nephew, two great-nephews and three great nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Mrs. Geneva V. Quiggins, 86, of 800 N. Market St. Knoxville, IL, died at 11:33 PM Monday January 1, 2001 at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL. Graveside services will be 1:00 PM Thursday January 4, 2001 at Henderson Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Webb officiating. Memorials may be made to Knox County Nursing Home
She was born on December 21, 1914v in Henderson Township IL to Thomas E. and Melissa (Rogers) Morrison. She was an active member of the First Church of God in Galesburg.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Della F. Gregory, 92, of 170 S. West St. Galesburg, IL, died at 12:50 PM Sunday December 31, 2000 at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL. Her funeral will be 1:30 PM Saturday 01/06/2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Thomas Ek officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
She was born on May 24, 1908 in Galesburg to Marshall W. and Florence E. (Clark) Logue. She married Marvin "John" Gregory in Cameron IL on April 21, 1924. He preceded her in death.
She worked for the Defense Department during World War II then she managed the Maid Rite Restaurant in Pekin IL. She was an officer in the Salvation Army and a member of their band.
She is survived by one son, Wesley Gregory of Burleson TX, 10 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Webber, four brothers, three sisters and four grandchildren.

Mr. Floyd E. Johnson, 95, of 1985 W. 13th Lane Yuma, AZ, died at 12:01 PM Wednesday April 25, 2001 at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, AZ. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Monday April 30, 2001 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Robert Friese officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to United Parkinson's Foundation.
He was born on April 5, 1906 in New Windsor IL to Alfred and Selma (Nelson) Johnson. He married Mary E. Lieurance in Princeton IL on April 25, 1937. She survives. He was a farmer in Gilson from 1910 - 1946, and then he was a Supervisor at Boss Manufacturing Co in Neopolitan, OH for 5 years then moved to Galesburg, IL and worked for Admiral Manufacturing until 1960. He then moved to Santa Barbara, CA and owned and operated the Victoria Coffee Shop and retired in 1976. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Galesburg, IL. He is a Knoxville (IL) High graduate and attended Brown's Business College in Galesburg, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson of Yuma, AZ; two daughters, Donna Baker of Yuma, AZ and Kay Henrich of Mansfield, TX; three grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Eldon L. Derry, 72, of 261 Sumner Street Galesburg, IL, died at 5:25 AM Friday April 27, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. His funeral will be 10:00 AM Monday April 30, 2001at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Ron Scarlett officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Sunday April 29, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene.
He was born on March 18, 1929 in Sheldon Grove IL to Chester and Goldie (Stambaugh) Derry. He married Marjorie H. Masters in Las Vegas NV on January 1, 1967. She survives. He was a blacktop machine operator for Gunther Construction Company for 40 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the Operating Engineers Union Local #649.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Derry of Galesburg, IL and two sisters, Verna Bramlett of E. Galesburg, IL and Doris Taylor of Berwick, IL. A sister preceded him in death.

Mrs. Letha E. Marshall, 99, of 185 N. Pleasant Galesburg, IL, died at 4:04 PM Thursday April 26, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. Her funeral will be 1:30 PM Monday April 30, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Ray Cameron officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or to a Charity of the Donor's Choice.
She was born on February 3, 1902 in Buckhorn IL to Frank and Cora (Bowman) Syrcle. She married Floyd O. Siebel on March 6, 1924. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1949. She then married Joe E. Marshall in Galesburg on May 25, 1959. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1971. She was a seamstress for over 75 years and worked as a sales clerk in various department stores in Quincy IL. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Galesburg and its Circle 5 and Lookout Class. She was a charter member of the Clayton American Legion Auxiliary, the Burlington Railroad Auxiliary of Galesburg, the AARP and the Cities Ladies Card Club.
She is survived by two nieces, Sandi Crabill of Quincy, IL and Beta Schroeder of Galesburg, IL and three great-nieces, Delores Howerter, Karen Thomas and Janice Unger, all of Galesburg, IL. A brother and four sisters preceded her in death.

Mr. Kenneth V. Sparks, 87, of 637 W. Fremont St. Galesburg, IL, died at 4:55 AM Thursday April 26, 2001 at Seminary Manor Nursing Home, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Saturday April 28, 2001 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Robert Friese officiating. Visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday April 27, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of America.
He was born on January 17, 1914 in Osceola IA to Benjamin and Jennie (Edwards) Sparks. He married Imogene Galyean in Galesburg on October 9, 1935. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1982. He then married Frances Anderson in Galesburg on July 25, 1985. She preceded him in death on October 12, 2000. He farmed in Knox County for many years and also worked at Rowe Manufacturing Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1976.
He is survived by a daughter, Teresa M. O'Reilly of Valrico, FL; three sons, Robert D. Sparks of Mesa, AZ, Phillip E. Sparks of Galesburg, IL and Harold D. Sparks of Abilene, KS; a step-son, Robert Anderson of Galesburg, IL; a step-daughter, Jean Grupe of Galesburg, IL; 12 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mrs. Mildred I. Knuth, 82, of 751 W. South St. Galesburg, IL, died at 6:10 PM Tuesday April 24, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. Her funeral will be 1:30 PM Saturday April 28, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Norman Myer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday April 27, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to Cottage Hospital Skilled Care Unit or the First Presbyterian Church.
She was born on May 19, 1918 in Tampico IL to Clarence and Blanch (Whelock) Darnell. She married Glen C. "Charlie" Knuth in Tampico on May 10, 1941. He survives. She was a registered nurse at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for over 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a 1936 graduate of Galesburg High School and a 1940 graduate of the Sterling (IL) Public Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn C. Knuth of Galesburg, IL; two sons, Larry R. Knuth of Galesburg, IL and Steven C. Knuth of Oak Harbor, WA; three daughters, Glenda Rasmussen of Manlius, IL, Janet Clay and Kathy L. Clifford, both of Galesburg, IL; a sister, Rosetta Brandenberg of Galesburg, IL; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Mr. Alfred L. Riggs, 85, of 177 Illinois Avenue Galesburg, IL, died at 3:07 AM Tuesday April 24, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. His funeral will be 10:00 AM Saturday April 28, 2001at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Shalom Renner officiating. Burial will be in Yates City Cemetery, Yates City. Visitation will be from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday April 27, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
He was born on November 25, 1915 in Anselmo NE to George C. and Melissa (Campbell) Riggs. He married Betty J. Steck in Galesburg on March 6, 1960. She survives. He worked at the former Anderson-Howe Baker for 25 years, Harvey Brothers Machine Shop for 11 years and Maytag Corporation for 12 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Moose Lodge and the Senior Citizen Bowling League.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Riggs of Galesburg, IL; a son, Thomas Lee Riggs of Las Vegas, NV; three daughters, Donna R. Peterson of Knoxville, IL, Carolyn J. Doxsee of Colona, IL, and Helen A. Stewart of Branson, MO; a step-daughter, Jean Ann Ashton of Galesburg, IL; eight grandchildren; one step-granddaughter and eight great grandchildren. Five brothers, and three sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. R. Harvey Kalin, 83, of 80 N. Ivan St. Galesburg, IL, died at 10:48 PM Saturday April 21, 2001 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. His funeral will be 10:30 AM Wednesday April 25, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Larsen and Rev. Robert Friese officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday April 24, 2001 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
He was born on September 28, 1917 in New Windsor IL to Robert V. and Ruth (Anderson) Kalin. He married Vera C. Francis on November 30, 1952 in Galesburg. She survives.
He was the owner of the former Kalin Auto Body in Galesburg. He worked for the Crown Oldsmobile garage and the Pioneer Pontiac garage. He worked as a layout inspector for Admiral Corporation for 10 years, retiring March 1983. He had lived at Lake Bracken for 30 years before moving into Galesburg. He was a 1935 graduate of Galesburg High School. He attended Western Illinois University on a baseball scholarship and played on the golf team. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was head usher for more than 45 years. He also was manager of the former church kittenball league. He was a lifetime member of the Galesburg Jaycees. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Kalin of Galesburg, IL; a daughter, Kathy Clevenger of Monmouth, IL; a son, Robert "Kip" Kalin of Monmouth, IL; five grandchildren, two-step grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A grandson preceded him in death.

Mrs. Mary Templeton, 71, of 434 Scotch Elm Lane Galesburg, IL, died at 4:15 PM Thursday April 19, 2001 at her home. Private family services will be at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Frederick Larner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday April 23, 2001 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to Make A Wish Foundation or Discovery Depot.
She was born on February 17, 1930 in Galesburg to Russell F. and Alice (McCreary) Malcolm. She married George L. Templeton in Galesburg on December 9, 1950. He survives. She was a homemaker and the Secretary/Treasurer of Templeton Roofing Company for 25, retiring in 1999. She was a member of the Central Congregational Church, the Soangetaha Country Club and the Cottage Hospital Service Guild where she volunteered.
She is survived by her husband, George Templeton of Galesburg, IL; a daughter, Ann Hunter of Des Moines, IA; a son, Jack Templeton of Galesburg, IL and two grandchildren.
