Jeannette (Jan) Bertsch
Jeannette (Jan) Bertsch, age 78, of Freeport, IL, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2002 at Schwarz Funeral Home in Freeport. Cremation followed the service and burial of the ashes was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardners. Visitations were from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in her memory in lieu of flowers.
Jan was born on November 3, 1923 in Freeport, to George and Vanetta (Kinzig) Giesey. She married Robert Bertsch on June 26, 1948. She worked at Burgess Battery, Structo, and retired from Civil Construction after being employed there for 23 years. She was a member of the Moose.
Jan's survivors include her husband, Robert; four children, Bobby Ballard of Freeport, Becky (Ron) Richart of Rockford, Dave Bertsch of Freeport Tom (Barb Roberts) Bertsch of Shannon; foster daughter, Sharon (Galey) Bissell of Freeport; twelve grandchildren, David Christians Jr., Ann (Terry) Robertson, Stephanie (Ryan Mayes) Christians, Michelle (Mike Knight) Manske, and Scott Manske all of Freeport; Toni (Joe Thomm) Christians of Orangeville, Jay (Stephanie) Bertsch of Alaska, Angie Bertsch of Lena; Justin Richart of Rockford, Tracy, Tina and Karen of Arizona; ten great grandchildren, Heidi, Jamie, Rachel, Ryan, Olivia, Becca, Lakin, Jacob, Alexis, and Madyson; one sister, Betty (Dale) Janssen of Freeport.
Jan was preceded is death by her parents; one grandson, Robbie Manske; one brother, Lowell Giesey; two sisters, Jean Brock and Pat Caruso.
Samuel J. Charleton
Samuel J. Charleton, age 76, of Lanark, Illinois, and formerly of Lake Carroll and Chicago, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at his home in Lanark.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Reverend Rod Dye of the Lanark United Methodist Church officiated the service. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitation were held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be made to the Rolling Hills Foundation in memory of Nina Persell.
Sam was born on Wednesday, February 10, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to Henry and Sarah (Finlay) Charleton. He graduated from Crane Technical High School, Chicago. He served in the United States Army Infantry and was a decorated Veteran for his actions as a Sniper with the 66th Infantry, Black Panther Division, during the War in Europe. He married Lois Dragoo on April 24, 1948 in Chicago.
Sam worked forty-seven years for the Chicago Transit Authority. He started as a Laborer, became and a Certified Electrician and ultimately retired as superintendent of Electrical Maintenance and Construction. He also worked for seven years with the Atomic Energy Commission at the University of Chicago.
Sam was a member of the Lanark United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a fifty-three member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Charleton of Lanark; two sons, Jack Charleton of Lanark and Dan (Maria) Charleton of Weston, Connecticut; and three grandchildren, Alexa, Sarah and Blake.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Joyce "Imogene" Hartwick
Joyce "Imogene" Hartwick, age 72, of Mt. Carroll, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at her home. The funeral services for Imogene were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Pastor Dan Cunningham from the First Baptist Church officiated the service. Friends were asked to call at the visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Imogene will be cremated after the services and inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church in Imogene's name.
Imogene was born on Sunday, January 19, 1930, to Robert and Ethel (Le Master) McDonald, in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She graduated from the High School in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1948. Imogene married Marvin Hartwick in December of 1949 in Rockville, Maryland. Imogene had worked at the Mt. Carroll National Bank through many ownership changes as Assistant Vice President. She retired in 1997 after 28 years. Prior to working at the bank she worked as an agent for the Savanna Greenhouse supplying plants and flowers for the Mt. Carroll area in the 1960's. Imogene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll and the church choir. She was treasurer for the Senior Citizen Housing in Mt. Carroll. Imogene loved flowers, gardening, and animals. She never said a bad word about anyone and always had a smile. She enjoyed making friends.
Imogene is survived by her husband, Marvin of Mt. Carroll; four sons, Ronald (Terry) Hartwick of Alpharetta, Georgia, Alan (Barbara) Hartwick of Carbondale, Illinois, Terry (Rosie) Hartwick of McKinney, Texas, and Jeffery (Dawn) Hartwick of Murphysboro, Illinois; six grandchildren, Matthew, Cassandra, Brianna, Ryan, Cortnae, and Rhiannon; one sister, Ruby James; and three brothers, Bob, Eugene, and Wally McDonald. Her parents and one sister, Juanita, preceded her in death.
Sandra L. "Sandy" Allen
Sandra L. "Sandy" Allen, 55, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
Memorial Services were held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 4, 2002 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Savanna. Rev. Wayne Schneider officiated. Inurnment was in Savanna Township Cemetery. Friends were asked to call from 1:00-3:00 P.M. Sunday at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Sandy's memory. Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna is in charge of the arrangements.
Sandy was born Saturday, August 17, 1946 in Savanna, Illinois, the daughter of Harold and Virginia (Thompson) Grummitt. She graduated from Savanna High School in 1964 and AIC in Davenport, Iowa. Sandy married George T. Allen on September 11, 1965 in Savanna.
Sandy was a bartender at the Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2223 for over ten years. She was the area coordinator for the Veterans Vans that provides transportation to area medical facilities for Veterans. She was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Savanna and the church altar guild; she was long time president of the Savanna VFW Auxiliary and was very involved in the VFW Post. Sandy has received many awards for her years of volunteer work. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting pig figurines, and studying her family genealogy. She loved being "Aunt Sandy" to Allison and Billy.
Survivors include her husband, George of Savanna, IL; a son, Brian Allen of Savanna, IL; a sister, Ruth (Terry) James of Savanna, IL; a nephew, Bill (Laurel) Grummitt of Savanna, IL; two nieces, Jennifer (Bryan) Gallagher of Chicago, IL., Theresa James of Savanna, a great niece and nephew, Allison and Billy Grummitt of Savanna.
Sandy was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Grummitt in 1986; a niece, Tami Jo Grummitt in 1988, her father, Harold in 1990 and her mother, Virginia in 1996.
Larry Lee Neuschwanger
Larry Lee Neuschwanger, age 59, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Friday, August 2, 2002 at Freeport Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at SS. John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll. Father Moises Apostol officiated. Visitation was from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Cremation rites were accorded following the mass. Memorial's may be made in Larry's name.
Larry was born on Sunday, October 11, 1942 in Savanna, Illinois to Robert and Frances (Buckwalter) Neuschwanger. He graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1960 and then attended Shimer College in Mt. Carroll for two years. He served in the Illinois National Guard from January 1964 until January 1970. He married Alice "Mike" Hawley on November 26, 1965 in Riverside, Illinois.
Larry enjoyed golfing, cooking outside and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Larry is survived by his wife, Alice "Mike" Neuschwanger of Mt. Carroll; two daughters, Jessica and Danielle Neuschwanger of Mt. Carroll; three sons, Patrick (Dehorah) Neuschwanger of Monroeville, PA, Jordan (Michelle) Neuschwanger of Summerville, S.C. and Tobias Neuschwanger of Mt. Carroll; three grandchildren, Shane, Colin and Jordan; and two sisters, Jennifer Neuschwanger (Jack Thulen) of Thomson, Illinois and Reta (Jerry) Green of North Freedom, Wisconsin.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
Albert G. Grinnall
Albert G. Grinnall, age 80, of Savanna, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Inurnment was in the Rock Island National Cemetery. There was no visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in Albert's name.
Albert was born on Monday, December 5, 1921 in Savanna, Illinois to George and Elizabeth (Ehredt) Grinnall. He attended Savanna High School. He married Gladys Dauphin on June 13, 1942.
Albert worked at Burlington Northern Railroad as Yard Master for 42 years, retiring in 1983. He also farmed in rural Savanna.
Albert served in the United States Army in field Artillery during numerous campaigns in Europe where he received the Bronze Star.
Albert was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Savanna Moose, Railroad Retirees, Past Board Member of the Center Hill School, past 4-H Leader, and past member of the Mt. Carroll Lions Club.
Survivors include, his wife Gladys; two daughters, Cheryl (Douglas) Rogers of Rockford, Illinois, Vicki (Dan) Becker of Platteville, Wisconsin; two sons, Steven (Michelle) Grinnall of Rockford, Illinois, Daryl (Mary Jo) Grinnall of Omaha, Nebraska; 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Morris of Savanna, and one brother, Mick (Donna) Grinnall of Clinton, Iowa.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents.
Albert "Al" Henry Klein
Albert "Al" Henry Klein, age 74, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, October 17, 2002, at the Freeport Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. The funeral service for Al will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 21, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna, with Reverend Wayne Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery, where full military rites will be accorded by the Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Savanna American Legion, and the Bellevue American Legion. Friends may call at the visitation from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in Al's name.
Al was born Wednesday, July 25, 1928, in Gilman, Wisconsin, to Julius and Eleanor (Westaby) Klein. He graduated from the Bellevue High School, Bellevue, Iowa, in 1946. After graduation, Al joined the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the US Army, he had eight weeks of engineer schooling at Ft. Louis, Washington and then served in Italy. He also served in the 82nd Paratrooper Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. In 1950, Al reenlisted and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and then in 1951, he served at Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania.
Al married Clara L. Gruenwald on June 3, 1951, in Savanna. They settled in Savanna, where Al worked on the Milwaukee Railroad in the Signal Department for many years. He then became the Manager/Treasurer of the Blackhawk Area Credit Union in Savanna. He was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Bellevue American Legion, the Carroll County Zoning Board, and a past member of the Savanna Rotary Club. Al enjoyed traveling in their motorhome, being home on the farm, reading, doing crossword puzzles and cryptoquotes, and camping and canoeing with family. He loved to sing and whistle around the house. Most important to Al was his family. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. Al was a believer in learning and would often challenge his children. He was intelligent, fun loving, and solid as a rock. Al had a heart of gold and was very generous to everyone.
Al is survived by his wife, Clara of Savanna; seven children, Susan (Richard) Keppler of Dubuque, Iowa, Jane Klein of Savanna, Stephen (Mary) Klein of Maquoketa, Iowa, Elaine (Ron) Ashley of Springfield, Missouri, Pamela (Mike) Delp of Savanna, Cheryl (Dave) Body of Mattoon, Illinois, and Mark (Debbie) Klein of Savanna; twenty-two grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur (Marcia) Klein of Shannon, Illinois; one sister, Ruth (Robert) Wilson of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. His parents; one brother, Robert Klein; and one sister, Clara Scaletta, preceded him in death.
Betty Deets
Betty Deets, Age 79, of Milledgeville, died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Coventry Village Nursing Home, Sterling.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Milledgeville Brethren Church with Reverend Russell Gordon officiating. Visitation took place on Monday, October 21, 2002 from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM at the Allen-Grennan Funeral Home, Milledgeville and also one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial services concluded at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Milledgeville Brethren Church, Hospice of the Rock River Valley, and the Alzheimer's Association.
Mrs. Deets was born January 18, 1923 in Sterling, Illinois the daughter of Glenn Arthur and Esther Mae (Shaible) Millhouse. After high school, she married Gail W. Deets on November 11, 1941 in Milledgeville. Betty was a member of the Milledgeville Brethren Church, was involved in the Women's Missionary Society, the Milledgeville Grange, and the Carroll County Help Center.
Survivors include her husband, Gail W. Deets of Milledgeville; three daughters, Nancy Deets of Monroe, WI, Beverly (Paul) Capp of Rock Falls, and Rogene (George) Kepner of Lena; two brothers, Robert (Ann) Millhouse of Polo and Richard (Janice)
Allan C. Hoganson
Allan C. Hoganson of rural Pearl City died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe, WI, born January 3, 1925 in Chicago, IL son of Conrad and Sophie (Fuhrhop) Hoganson.
Allan was a 1943 Graduate of Carl Schurz High School and received his Bachelor Degree from the University of IL. He served as an Air Force Pilot during WWII. He had worked in the canning Industry and was a Manufacturing Representative for Hoganson & Associates Inc. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling locally and around the U.S. He was an avid sports fan, Green Bay Packers in particular.
Allan is survived by three sons, John (Susie) Hoganson of San Francisco, CA, Jim Hoganson of Scottsdale, AZ, and Jeff Hoganson of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Carrie (Al) Corder of Simi Valley, CA; one sister, Dorothy Zeiter of LaGrange, IL; and long time companion Nancy Kempel if Pearl City, IL and he was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 9, 2003 at the Hermann Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Pearl City with the Rev. Jane White officiating. Visitation was held on Wednesday from 5-8 PM. Burial was in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, IL. A Memorial fund has been established.
Donald "Donnie" Charles Bull
Donald "Donnie" Charles Bull, age 38, of Mt. Carroll, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 9 at the Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick, Illinois with Reverend Dave Davies of the Church and Pastor Mark Woods of the Shannon Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Donnie's name.
Donnie was born December 31, 1964 in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Ronald "Bud" and Rita (Wolfe) Bull. He graduated from the Mt. Carroll High School with the Class of 1983. Donnie married Joy E. Schleuning March 31, 2001.
He worked as a Security Guard with Exelon Quad-City Nuclear Plant, Cordova, Illinois for 11 years. Donnie helped farm on the family farm where he enjoyed raising calves. He coached Little League Baseball in Mt. Carroll and was an assistant coach with the Mt. Carroll High School Varsity Baseball program. Donnie was an avid sports fan, especially for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini and the Chicago Bears.
He is survived by his wife, Joy , of Mt. Carroll; his parents, Ronald "Bud" and Rita Bull of Savanna; three sisters, Kathy (Lou) Bull of DeForest, Wisconsin, Rhonda (Marvin) Cass of Solon, Iowa and Paula (Thomas) Losch of Waukegan, Illinois; two brothers, Ronald (Martha) Bull of Savanna and Thomas (Molly) Bull of Pearl City, Illinois; father and mother-in-law, Richard (Darlene) Schleuning of Chadwick, Illinois; two sister-in-laws, Tina (Roger) Wienk of Freeport, Illinois and Dawn (Ron) Hastings of Savanna; a brother-in-law, Rich (Susie) Schleuning of Chadwick; and 19 nieces and nephews, Blake Bull, Tessie, Christopher, Lexie and Nicole Cass, Thomas and Timothy Losch, Jessica, Justin and Kelsey Bull, Melissa and Evan Bull, James, Mindy and Kristy Allen, Caleb and Adam Hastings, and Paul and Melissa Schleuning. Donnie is preceded in death by a nephew, David Cass.
Richard M. Doherty
Richard M. Doherty, age 53, of Freeport, IL went to sleep with the angels after a long battle with heart disease on Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. He was born August 11, 1949 in Elgin, IL, son of Edmund and Norma (Reynolds) Doherty Sr. He married Kimberly Weier on August 11, 1990 in Pearl City, IL. He enjoyed all sports especially bowling and fishing.
Richard is survived be his wife, Kimberly of Freeport; father and mother-in-law, Wayne and Nancy Weier of Freeport; two daughters, Jessie (Chip) Mason of Morristown, TN, and Jodi (Greg) Hawkins of Dandridge, TN; step daughter, Jessi Mowery of Freeport; step son, Jordan Mowery of Freeport; six grandchildren, Brandi Rea, Houston Rea, Kinsler Rea, Derek Mason, Trey Mason and Kaitlyn Hawkins; three brothers, Danny Doherty and girl friend Marlena Kerr of Mt. Carroll, IL, Edmund (Julie) Doherty Jr. of Oregon, IL, and Tim (Sue) Doherty of Mt. Carroll, IL; three sisters, Tonya Bushelle and boy friend Duane Eiseman of Freeport, IL, Pam Hubb of Pearl City, IL, and Janna (Jeff) Johnson of Pearl City, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, daughter Kathi.
Cremation rites where accorded, and visitation will be Tuesday, January 14, 2003 from 3:00-6:00 PM at the Hermann Funeral Home in Pearl City, IL, followed by a memorial service. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery in Polo, IL. A memorial fund has been established in his memory.
Kay Pettinger
Kay Pettinger, age 67, of Lanark, IL died Friday, January 10, 2003 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, following an automobile accident. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at the First Brethren Church in Lanark, with Rev. Arnold Owens, the pastor officiating. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitations were from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. A memorial has been established in her memory.
Kay was born April 5, 1935 in Freeport, IL daughter of Ronald and Beulah (Lindsay) Flickinger. 1953 graduated of Lanark High School and attended Rockford Business College. She was employed at PNC in Polo. She formerly was employed at the Hi-Way Cafe in Lanark for 19 years. She was a member of the First Brethren Church in Lanark. She sang in the church choir for many years.
Kay's family includes five children, Doug Pettinger of Lanark, IL, Deb (Rick) Hopperstad of Lakeville, MN, Denee (Steve) Martindale of Beloit, WI, Lisa Adams of Lanark, IL, Mike (Maria) Pettinger of Freeport, IL; ten grandchildren; one sister, Sharon (Jim) Farson of Serena, IL. Kay is preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Britnie Adams.
