Roellen Elizabeth Andrews
RoEllen E. Andrews, age 65 of rural Lomax, Illinois died at 11:40 p.m. Friday March12, 2010 in the Great River Medcial Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born July 6, 1944 in Bushnell, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and Roxie Gittings Evans. On May 16, 1965, she married
Jerry Andrews in Carman. He preceded her in death on January 30, 2000.
Mrs Andrews was employed for twenty five years at Methode Corporation in Carthage, Illinois, retiring in 2009. She was a member of the Carman United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter - Maleia (Roger) Brockett of Lomax, her mother- Roxie Evans of Lomax, four grandchildren - Heath (Lori) Andrews, Amber, Amanda and Hogan Brockett, two step grandchildren- Roger (Lori) Brockett Jr and Billie Jo Lambertsen, two great grandchildren- Nicholas and Damion Snyder, three sisters - Wynona Anderson of Stronghurst, Roxann (Tim) Tipton of Clarksville, Arkansas, Carmella (Raymond) Hollaway of Knoxville, Arkansas, three brothers- LaMarr (Marilyn) Evans of Biggsville, IL., LaRoy (Connie) Evans of Brighton, Colorado, and Rick (Melanie) Evans of Lomax, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and one step grandchild - Jeremy Brockett.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday March 17, 2010 in the Carman United Methodist with Pastor Anita Munden officiating. Burial will follow in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials have been established for the Lomax Fire Department and for her grandchildren’s education.
Wayne E. Bell
Mr. Wayne E. Bell, 90, of Colusa, Illinois passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 5:15 A.M. at the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage, Illinois.
He was born on June 21, 1920 in Adrian, Illinois, the son of John and Grace Paulus Bell. On January 5, 1943 he married
Maxine L. Chewning in Kahoka, Missouri.
Mr. Bell was a 1938 graduate of the Colusa High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Paratrooper with the 82nd and the 101st Airborne. He farmed in the Colusa area and operated a trucking company for many years. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and was instrumental in establishing the Dallas City Veterans Memorial. He was also a member of the Hancock County Farm Bureau.
Surviving are his wife, 1 daughter, Sharon Butler of Lima, Illinois, 2 grandsons, Carry Summers of Carthage and Randell Summers of Port Orange, Florida and 3 sisters, Helen Phipps, Arlene Boyer and Jean Bell all of Carthage.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor David Poland officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Harris cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City American Legion.
M. Sue Blakely
M. Sue Blakely, age 90 of Wapello, Iowa, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois, died at noon Thursday February 18, 2010 in the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Facility.
She was born January 13, 1920 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Leonard and Martha Powell Moulton. On May 10, 1941, she married
Paul Blakely in Lomax, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1979.
Mrs. Blakely had attended the University of Illinois. She and her husband had owned and operated a laundromat and a laundromat repair and supply company in Clinton, Indiana for several years. She and her husband also owned a grocery store in Dallas City, and a locker plant in West Point, Iowa for several years. She was a member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, Methodist Church, and Women’s American Legion Auxiliary, all of Martinsville, Illinois.
Surviving are one daughter, Neva Sue Pefley of Brazil, Indiana, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Vivian McCulley of Columbus Junction, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son - Dick Blakely, and two sisters - Helen Jane Rhodes and Dorothy Reinbeck.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday February 22, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois. Burial will be in the Terre Haute, Illinois cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. Monday until time of services at Banks & Beals. A memorial fund has been established for Great River Hospice.
Jesse Walton Bond
Jesse W. Bond, age 94 of Wesley Village in Macomb, IL., formerly of Sciota, IL., died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday October 7, 2010 in the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. He was born July 28. 1916 in Bedford, Iowa, the son of Albert Henry and Mary Naomi Gibb Bond. On August 25, 1943, he married
Grace M. Torrance in the Coldbrook Christian Church.
Mr. Bond farmed all of his life near Sciota, retiring in 1981. He was a former member of the Sciota and Smithshire United Methodist Churches, and a current member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the United Methodist Men, and sang for many years with the “Singing Seniors” of Macomb. He was an avid fisherman, and loved spending time with his grandchildren, and attending sporting events that involved family members.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter - Donna (Charles) Lefler of Stronghurst, IL., two sons - J.W. Bond of Blandinsville, IL., Bill (Lynne) Bond of Illinois City, IL., five grandchildren- Christine Lefler, Jess Bond, T.J. Bond, Jesse Bond, Brandy Bond, three great grandchildren- Tayler (Lefler) Johnson, A.J. Fleece, and Jayden Bond. He was preceded in death by one brother - Albert Henry Bond Jr., one sister - Vivian Funk, one daughter in infancy - Naomi Allene Bond, and one Grandson - Alan Lefler
Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 2010, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Pastor Don Riley will officiate. Private committal of ashes will be held Saturday October 16, 2010 in the Raritan cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Wesley Village of Macomb.
Russell R. Bowen
Mr. Russell R. Bowen, 94, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 1:02 A.m. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
He was born on July 16, 1916 in Disco, Illinois, the son of Cyrus Ray and Clarissa Wright Bowen. On June 29, 1940 he married
Mildred Gooding in Monticello, Missouri. She preceded him in death on April 20, 1998.
Mr. Bowen served in the US Army during World War II and took part in the Normandy invasion. He worked as a millwright at the IAAP for many years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and enjoyed woodworking, traveling, hunting, fishing and attending flea markets.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara (John) Louden of LaHarpe, Illinois, one son Tom (Mary) Bowen of Yarmouth, Iowa, 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, Donald Bowen, one grandson, Terry Bowen and an infant sister.
Services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Durham cemetery. The family will meet with friends on Saturday from 1:00 PM until time of services. Friends are also welcomed to stop at the funeral home anytime between 3:00 and 8:00 PM Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City American Legion.
Lois C. Bradshaw
Lois Clare Bradshaw, 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, April 9, 2010 at 8:15 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She was born January 5, 1919 in Pilot Grove Township, Hancock County, Illinois, the daughter of Wicliffe and Cleola Mamie Ketchum Hendrix. On December 30, 1938 she married
William E. Bradshaw in What Cheer, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1985.
She is survived by two daughters, Clare (George) Burr of Los Angeles, California and Sally (Richard) Rasmussen of LaHarpe, 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
She was a graduate of Carthage High School and Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. She worked for a time in Clifford Warner’s Law office in LaHarpe and following her marriage to Bill, who was editor of The Quill newspaper in LaHarpe, she worked as a linotype operator. In 1968 she and her husband moved to Quincy where he worked for the Quincy Herald-Whig and Lois worked at the Quincy Clinic as a secretary. In 1981 they retired and moved back to LaHarpe. She was an active member of the LaHarpe Historical and Genealogical Society and the LaHarpe Christian Church.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church, LaHarpe Historical Society or the Hancock County Republican Women.
Janet Irene Brown
Mrs. Janet Irene Brown, 73, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 11:50 A.M. at her home.
She was born March 13, 1936 in Russell, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh P. and Audrey Marie Perkins Harding. On July 23, 1955 she married
Harold E. Brown in Stronghurst, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2009.
Mrs. Brown worked for Sylvania in Burlington, Iowa and later for NTN Bower in Macomb, Illinois. She enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles and playing cards.
Surviving are one daughter, Lana Watson of Des Moines, Iowa, two sons, Larry Brown of LaHarpe and Darren Brown of Lewistown, Illinois, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Paul Harding of Blandinsville, Illinois and two sisters, Mary Lou Allen of Macomb, Illinois and Nawanda Mehaffey of Burlington, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, Dora Farguson and her parents.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Harry Miller officiating. Burial will be in LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Wendell G. Carey
Mr. Wendell G. Carey, 92, of Blandinsville, Illinois passed away Friday, January 8, 2010 at 1:57 P.M. at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois.
He was born March 31, 1917 in Macomb, the son of George and Mary Towle Carey. On July 19, 1936 he married
Adelaide Mae Thompson in Canton, Missouri.
Mr. Carey had farmed near Fountain Green, Illinois for many years. He moved to Blandinsville in 1959 where he built the bowling alley and operated it for the next seven years. He then worked as a carpenter, building many homes in the area. He was a member of the Twin Oaks Golf Club and the First Christian Church in Blandinsville. He enjoyed playing cards and gardening.
Surviving are his wife, one son, Dennis (Lou) Carey of Macon, Missouri, two daughters, Patsy (George) Butterfield and Nancy (Darrell) Badord all of Blandinsville, 9 grandchildren, Doug (Becky) Butterfield, Greg (Lynn) Butterfield, Todd (Karrie) Butterfield, Jodi (Garrett) Lindell, Michele (Chris) Shannon, Laura (Charles) Huff, Chawn (Greg) Cochran, Chad (Cindy) Carey and Angela Carey, 13 great-grandchildren, Melissa, Stephen, Patrick, Brian and Brandon Butterfield, Austin and Brooke Lindell, Dani and Mandi Huff, Nathan and Nolan Shannon, Nikki Cross and Ambreeial Benham, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Jacob Butterfield and Mickenzie Cross, two brothers, Marion Carey of Blandinsville and Paul Theodore Carey of Marshfield, Missouri and 1 sister, Rosemary Albright of Good Hope, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 8 brothers.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 11, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Blandinsville where the family will meet with friends, Monday, from 10:00 A.M. until time of services. Pastor Gordon Blankenship will officiate. Burial will be in the Glade City cemetery, Blandinsville. A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church.
Leroy "Lee" Clark
Mr. Leroy “Lee” Clark, 64, of rural Blandinsville, Illinois died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:10 a.m. at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born November 20, 1945 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Elmer and Dorothy Bloyd Clark. On July 12, 1966 he married
Barbara Gittings in New Burn, North Carolina.
Mr. Clark was a 1963 graduate of LaHarpe High School. He was a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from November, 1965- November, 1967. He raised livestock and worked part time at the Carthage Livestock Auction. He enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities. He was a avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Sherrie(Travis) Weaver of Blandinsville, Stacie Mynatt of Macomb, Illinois, one son, Matthew (Kari) Clark of Kewanee, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, Victoria, Morgan, Carter and Regan Weaver, Hunter, Brody, Dawson and Sydney Mynatt, Addison and Braden Clark, 4 brothers, William Clark, Ricky Markey and Richard Markey, all of Carthage, Illinois, and Robert Markey Jr. of LaHarpe, Illinois, 3 sisters, Cathy Johnson of Dallas City, Illinois, Patty Finch of Carthage, and Brenda Kern of Mt. Airy, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer, his mother and step-father, Dorothy and Robert Markey Sr. and one brother, Daniel Markey.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Robert Tillman officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Crane cemetery, Lomax, Illinois. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Friday at the LaHarpe Christian Church where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the MDH Hospice.
Nathan V. Cokel
Nathan Victor Cokel, age 27 of Burlington, Iowa, died at 8:42 a.m. Tuesday March 23, 2010 in Burlington. He was born May 6, 1982 in Carthage, Illinois, the son of Jerry and Janice Neff Cokel.
Nathan was a 2001 graduate of Southern High School in Stronghurst. He had been employed at COBO International in West Burlington for the past four years. He loved fishing and trap shooting. He had played in a softball league at the West Burlington RecPlex. He enjoyed photography, socializing, family gatherings and trips with his uncle Chuck. He especially loved his nieces and nephews and his two dogs- Harley and Cooper.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather- Janice Neff and Darrell Link of Stronghurst, his father and stepmother - Jerry and Bonnie Cokel of Media, IL., one brother - Jerame (Brooke) Cokel of Altona, IL., three sisters - Amy Cokel of Peoria, IL., Melinda (Derek) Perry of Galesburg, IL., Rachael (Tony) Gibb of Stronghurst, three step brothers - Paul and Ben Miller of Burlington, Michael (Maggie) Link of Blandinsville, IL., two step sisters- Denise Williams of Little, York, IL., Natalie (Paul) Britt of Wyanet, IL., two step grandmothers- Betty Link of LaHarpe, IL., and Betty Butts of Media, IL., and several nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was preceded in death by one brother in infancy-Alexander J. Cokel and his grandparents.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the Walnut Grove cemetery near Media with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Humane Society.
Laura G. Conner
Mrs. Laura G. Conner, 85, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 at 4:00 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She was born June 5, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Harry and Mary Hainey Clifford. On November 27, 1951 she married
Vincent J. Conner in New Jersey. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She and her husband lived in Kirkwood, New Jersey for many years, retiring to Arizona in 1987. Following the death of her husband she moved to Illinois where she lived with her daughter. She had been a resident of the care center since 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Kathleen Harden of Bushnell, Illinois, one son, Brian Conner of Collingswood, New Jersey, five grandchildren, three brothers, Joseph, Harry and William Clifford all of New Jersey and one sister, Frances McHale of Philadelphia, PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters.
Following cremation, burial will be in the Cochise Memory Gardens in Sierra Vista, Arizona.
John Raymond Degen
John R. Degen, age 66 of Lomax, Illinois died at 3:00 a.m. Saturday August 7, 2010 at his home. He was born December 29, 1943 in Oakville, Iowa the son of Raymond W. and Mellie L. Lott Degen. On March 18, 1977 he married
Mercedes Jones in Carthage, Illinois.
Mr. Degen was a navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He had worked at J.I. Case Co., General Electric, and in the oil fields of Oklahoma for CMI, Inc. He also was a truck driver for Richers Trucking in Wever, Iowa, and was an independent truck driver for many years. He was a member of the OOIDA Independent Truckers Association.
Survivors include his wife, his mother Mellie Degen of Morning Sun, Iowa, three sons- Vernon Ray Degen, Robert McBride of Oklahoma City, OK., Glen (Myrna) McBride of Choctaw, OK., two daughters - Robin Reu of Burlington, IA., Dawn (David) Davolt of Fort Madison, IA., eight grandchildren, one brother - Howard Degen of Burlington, IA., and three sisters - Evelyn Beard of Winfield, IA., Lois (Lyndle) Hull of Hannibal, MO., and Dorothy Bowers of Burlington, IA. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother - Melvin Degen, and one grandson- Jacob Adam Olsen.
Visitation will be from noon until 1:45 p.m. Thursday August 12, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, IL. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Crane cemetery near Lomax. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service.
