Mary Joanne Mesecher

Mrs. Mary Joanne Mesecher, 72, of Knoxville, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 12:21 P.M. at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.

She was born February 17, 1937 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the daughter of Johnny and Doris Ferguson Carnes. On September 24, 1954 she married Raymond Mesecher Sr. in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1989.

She worked as a cook at Western Illinois University and at the Roseville Elementary School. She lived in Roseville for many years and had been a resident of the Knox County Nursing Home since 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Sara (Randy) Gooding of Roseville and Tammie Gipe of Carthage, IL, two sons, Johnny (Amy) Mesecher of Monmouth and Raymond (Ruby) Mesecher Jr. of Griggsville, IL, ten grandchildren, Lisa (Gooding) McIntyre, Michael Gooding, and Ben Thompson all of Roseville, Nicholas Gipe of Raritan, Johnny Mesecher Jr., Kaitlyn Mesecher, and Andrew Mesecher all of Monmouth, Jehrid Churchill of Galesburg, Allison Mesecher of Monmouth, and Raymond Mesecher III of Griggsville, three step grandchildren Greg Fentress, Brandon Fulmer, and Marissa Fulmer all of Griggsville, one great grandson Anthony Thompson of Bloomingtoon, two step great granddaughters Rachael and Letti Fentress, one brother Laverne Mitchell of Carthage, and one sister Beverly Myers of West Burlington, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, three brothers and her parents.

Services will be held Friday, January 29, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established.

Everett K. Moore

Mr. Everett K. Moore, age 74, of Macomb, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at 2:25 p.m. at his home.

He was born August 18, 1936 near LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of George A. and Grace Elizabeth Brown Moore. In October 1961 he married Sharon Burford. They later divorced. On June 17, 2005 he married Patsy Hulet Haines in Macomb.

Mr. Moore served in the US Army from 1959 - 1961. He worked for the TP & W Railroad, Bowers in Macomb and retired from Bedwell Farm Equipment in Bushnell, Illinois. He was a member of the Henderson County Old Timers, the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge and the Blandinsville Christian Church. He was a former member of the Tri-County Saddle Club.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy, one son, Steve Moore of LaHarpe, one daughter, Kathy Boyer of Blandinsville, Illinois, 2 step-children, Kristine Gronewold of Macomb and Lonnie Haines of Azteca, New Mexico, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Dean Moore of LaHarpe and Gene Moore of Oquawka, Illinois and one sister, Alice Mapes of LaHarpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Boone.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois, with Rev. John Simmons officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge or the MDH Hospice.

Dolores L. Morris

Mrs. Dolores L. Morris, 78, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, October 8, 2010 at 12:20 PM at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born August 20, 1932 in Chicago, the daughter of Louis and Sophie Post Nagy. On May 24, 1951 she married Cletis W. Morris in West Liberty, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1997.

Mrs. Morris was a member of the local Jehovah Witness Congregation in Fort Madison.

Surviving are 2 sons, Randall Morris of East Bangor, Pennsylvania and Robert Morris of Blackstone, Illinois, 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 brother, Jack Nagy of Romeoville, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 daughter, Karen Holt and 1 sister, Mary Lou Weber.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 3925 Ave. L, Fort Madison, IA. Interment will be held at a later date in the Lewis cemetery, West Liberty, Kentucky. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City, is assiting with arrangements.

William E. "Bill" Mosher

William E. “Bill” Mosher, age 61 of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of the Stronghurst, Illinois area, died Sunday November 28, 2010 in Huntsville. He was born January 2, 1949 in the Hopper community, near Stronghurst, the son of Hiram Edward and Lydia Emma Waterman Mosher.

Mr. Mosher was an army veteran of the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. For the past fifteen years, he was employed at Home Depot in Huntsville. He loved painting and drawing.

Survivors include three daughters - Renee (Paul) Lee and Cinnamon (Terry) Ague, both of Burlington, IA., Marilea (Shawn) Twyman of Wayland, IA., four granddaughters, one sister - Cornelia Sickels of Stronghurst, one brother - Kenneth Mosher of Gonzales, TX., and his special friend - Connie Eddy of Huntsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers- Clayton and Jerry Mosher, and one sister Edna Northup.

The graveside service with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday December 13, 2010 in the Olena cemetery near Stronghurst. No visitation is planned. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorotha Riley Myers

Dorotha Riley Myers, of Carthage, Illinois, a kind and generous woman, passed on October 7, 2010 at 6:00 AM. at the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage. Dorotha the daughter of Victor and Inez (Browning) Riley, was born in their farm house near Colusa, IL on September 12, 1917, the oldest of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond Earl Myers, and her brother, Ellsworth. She is survived by her sisters, Doris Henrichs of Monmouth and Cheryl Owings of Carthage, her four sons, David (Anne) of Oswego, IL, William (Frances) of Lincolnshire, IL, John of Chicago, IL, and Jack (Donna) of Arlington Heights, IL., her five grandchildren Michael (Brittan), Nicholas, Kristin (Eric) Riger, Erica and Patrick, her cousin, Jayne Eckhardt, and many nieces and nephews.

She attended Bross School, a one room country school, and Colusa High School, where she was class valedictorian. She received a teacher’s certification from Western Illinois Teachers College and taught in one-room schools.

On June 7, 1939, she married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Myers. They moved to Mt. Sterling, where Ray worked for Prairie Farms Creamery for twenty-five years. In 1962, Dorotha returned to teaching, starting with kindergarten in Hersman, IL. In 1964, they moved back to Hancock County, settling in Carthage, where Ray sold insurance and Dorotha taught school, first in Ferris, IL and then in Carthage.

She was named Hancock County Teacher of the Year for her year-long Bicentennial program with her fifth-sixth grade class in 1976. She eventually completed her bachelor’s degree at Western Illinois University toward the end of her teaching career in the early 1980s. She was an elder, Sunday school teacher and women’s group leader at the First Christian Church of Carthage.

Dorotha served as president of the PTA and Red Cross in Mt. Sterling, and was active in The Delvers Club, Home Extension, Memorial Hospital Gray Ladies and Business and Professional Women in Carthage. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her husband, Raymond, delivered Meals on Wheels for twenty years, well into their 80’s.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a woman deeply devoted to her church and community. Dorotha was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. Raymond and she celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in June.

The family especially want to thank the staffs at the Hancock County Nursing Home and Memorial Hospital for the loving care given to Dorotha.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 11, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Carthage with Rev. Ray McLaren officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery near Colusa, Illinois. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois where the family will meet with friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Carthage, the Hancock County Nursing Home or Memorial Hospital of Carthage.

Raymond E. Myers

Raymond Earl Myers, 92, of Carthage, IL, a kind and gentle man, passed on August 18, 2010 at 11:55 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital, Carthage. Raymond the son of Charles and Myrtle Griffith Myers, was born in their farm house near Colusa, IL on October 13, 1917, the youngest of six children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Beryle (Onan) Hollingsworth and Vernice (Sheldon) Bross, and his brothers, Clifford (Christine), Vernon “Dutch”(Dorotha) and an infant boy. He attended Webster, a one room country school, and Colusa High School. He helped his family on the farm, and after high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and also worked for the Adrian General Store.

On June 21, 1939, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorotha Riley. They moved to Mt. Sterling, IL, where he worked for 25 years for Prairie Farms Creamery, serving as field manager for many years. He is survived by his wife and four sons, David (Anne) of Oswego, IL, William (Frances) of Lincolnshire, IL, John of Chicago, IL, and Jack (Donna) of Arlington Heights, IL. In 1964, they moved back to Hancock County, settling in Carthage, where Raymond sold insurance and mutual funds for John Hancock Life Insurance Company as well as selling real estate. In the mid-1960s, he and his brother, Dutch, were the founders and developers of Sherwood Oaks, a subdivision north of Carthage.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Michael (Brittan), Nicholas, Kristin (Eric) Riger, Erica and Patrick.

He was an elder and board president of the First Christian Church of Carthage, and an active member of the Carthage Lions Club, from which he received Lion of the Year in 2007, after forty years of service. He also served as an alderman of the Carthage City Council, a board member of RSVP and a board member of the Adams County Council for Senior Citizens (a five county organization).

He and his wife, Dorotha, delivered Meals on Wheels for twenty years, well into their 80’s. He served on the board of the Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum for 10 years, during the time they expanded into their current building. Raymond was instrumental in creating the Carthage Industrial Development Corporation when Methode Electronics first came to Carthage and served as secretary for four years.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a man deeply devoted to his church and community, and ever mindful of the needs of others.

The family want to especially thank the staff at the Hancock County Nursing Home and Memorial Hospital for the loving care given to Raymond.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Myers cemetery near Colusa, with Pastor Ray McClaren officiating.

On Saturday, August 28, 2010, everyone is welcome to attend a visitation with the family at the First Christian Church in Carthage from 8:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. with a memorial service to be held at 10:30 A.M. at the church with Pastor Ray McClaren officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Carthage or the Hancock County Nursing Home.

Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe, IL is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jerry Allen Niehaus

Jerry Allen Niehaus, age 81 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 10:33 p.m. Tuesday May 18, 2010 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born March 12, 1929 in Mediapolis, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Lela Piper Niehaus. On July 4, 1955, he married Charlotte Opie in Hernando, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on March 12, 1999.

Mr. Niehaus was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed at Sylvania Corporation in Burlington, Iowa, and also Tennessee and Kentucky, for thirty one years. He was a member of the Burlington American Legion and Burlington Moose Lodge.

Survivors include one daughter - Donna (Darryn) Roasa of Phoenix, AZ., one son- Eric (Robin) Niehaus of Decatur, IL., one step daughter - Kalene (Jim) Barr of Cheyenne, WY., a special friend - Sandy Bohnenkamp of Stronghurst, five grandchildren- Dustin and David Roasa, Braxton, Chase, and Isabella Niehaus, two step grandchildren- Christy and Janette, and two brothers- Warren Niehaus of Dyersburg, TN., and Frank Niehaus of Burlington, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday May 21, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Richard Johnson. No visitation is planned. A memorial fund has been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab of Stronghurst.

Erma Ravenscraft Nixon

Erma Ravenscraft Nixon, age 85 of Lomax, Illinois died at 6:20 a.m. Thursday November 11, 2010 in the Gilpin Home of Dallas City, IL. She was born August 30, 1925, the daughter of Clifford and Bertha Baxter McGraw. She married Earl Ravenscraft in August of 1943. He preceded her in death in May of 1979. She later married Harlan Nixon on October 26, 1984 in Monroe City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1988.

Erma had worked at Sylvania Corporation in Burlington for 10 years. She and her husband, Earl, had operated the Wayside Inn in Gulfport for many years and in 1965, they purchased the Pink Tavern in Lomax, Illinois, which she operated until her retirement. She was a member of the Women Of The Moose and the VFW Auxiliary. She loved to travel and going dancing.

Survivors include two daughters - Ruth (Dino) Ganakes of Biggsville, IL., Phyllis (Dean) Ishmael of Morristown, TN., one son- Harold (Maude) Ravenscraft of Lomax, eleven grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren, one sister - Pauline Woods of Gladstone, IL., and three brothers- Robert (Kate) McGraw of Gladstone, William (Pat) McGraw of Quincy, IL., and Lee (Pat) McGraw of West Burlington, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, one daughter - Frankie Hill, and one sister - Frances Fye.

The funeral for Erma will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 14, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor Cheryl Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the Biggsville cemetery, Biggsville, Illinois. Visitation will be from Noon until 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for the Alzheimer’s Association and Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

Charles E. Nylin

Mr. Charles E. Nylin, 67, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 8:27 P.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

He was born June 7, 1942 in Keithsburg, Illinois, the son of Robert and Bertha Mae Landrith Nylin. On December 22, 1972 he married Linda Ikerd in Hamilton, Illinois.

Mr. Nylin served in the US Navy. He retired from JI Case Co. in Burlington, Iowa where he had worked for 28 ½ years. He was on the board at Harris cemetery and was currently serving as the sexton.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, Charles Nylin Jr. of Glenwood, Iowa, Robert Nylin of Burlington, Iowa and Jason Nylin of Eldridge, Iowa, one daughter, Jaime Shultz of Smithshire, Illinois, 6 grandchildren, three brothers, Randy Nylin of Keithsburg, Illinois, Robbie Nylin of Lincoln, Illinois and Ronnie Nylin of Tucson, Arizona and two sisters, Sandy Noel of Galesburg, Illinois and Judy Sanders of Hampton, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Harris cemetery, rural Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service or the Grace Bible Church.

Boyd L. "Whitey" Palmer

Mr. Boyd L. “Whitey” Palmer, 73, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 8:20 P.M. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

He was born April 7, 1937 in Downing, Missouri, the son of Luel and Lillian Smith Palmer. On September 25, 1960 he married Joy L. Faeth in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Mr Palmer was a graduate of the Terre Haute, Illinois High School and served in the US Army 1960 - 1962. He owned and operated Palmer’s Auto Sales and Service in LaHarpe for many years. Earlier he operated a service station in LaHarpe and drove a bulk fuel truck for Ayers Oil Company in the Fountain Green and LaHarpe area. He enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool and being involved in auto racing, first working in the pit crew with the Bob Ensminger Modified Race Team and later working with his son and nephews’ cars. He was an active member of the LaHarpe Union Church where he served as part of the “Carpenters Crew” on the mission trips to Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Eric (Cathy) Palmer of LaHarpe, one daughter, Amy Palmer of LaHarpe, three grandchildren, Brad (Jeni) Richardson, Amy (Brian) Brown and Darcie Palmer, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Harley (Shirley “Rusty”) Palmer of LaHarpe and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lois Bennett and one brother, Hollis Palmer.

The family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Graveside services, with Military Rites, will be held at 3:30 P.M. Friday at the Terre Haute, Illinois cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to attend a gathering at the Annex in LaHarpe, beginning at 4:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Carpenters Crew of the Mexico Mission Trips or the LaHarpe Ambulance Service.

Dolly I. Patterson

Mrs. Dolly I. Patterson, 81, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 1:20 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born June 2, 1929 in Ft. Morgan, Colorado, the daughter of Otto Jonathon Pugh and Irene (Murphy) Doyle. On June 30, 1960 she married Dean “Dutch” Patterson in Denver, Colorado. He preceded her in death on August 4, 2009.

She attended Ft. Morgan Grade school and High School, graduating in 1948. In May of 1949 she graduated from Parks Business School in Denver, Colorado. She served in the US Navy Reserves for 6 years. She worked at the Air Force Finance Center in Denver from 1950 until June 1960. Following their marriage they moved to LaHarpe where she worked for Dr. Mueller from August 1961 - February 1972. She then worked at the Physical Plant at WIU in Macomb, Illinois from March 1972 until retiring in January 2002.

Dolly was a Girl Scout leader in LaHarpe for 15 years. She was instrumental in getting the LaHarpe Senior citizens club organized and finding a home for their meetings. She attended the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, Illinois.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Monalisa (Tim) Graves of LaHarpe and Linda (Tim) Leinbach of Milan, Illinois, 6 grandchildren, Jason, Crystal, Justin and Courtney Graves all of LaHarpe and Megan and Trevor Leinbach of Milan, 2 great-grandchildren, Ashton and Harley Brown of LaHarpe and several brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Becky Sue Patterson.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 1, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for Alzheimer’s Research or for a charity of the donor’s choice.
