Nancy J. Pennock
Nancy J. Pennock, 75, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Anamosa, Iowa passed away Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 7:25 P.M. at her home.
She was born January 3, 1935 in Aledo, Illinois, the daughter of Elmo and Hazel Brown Osburn. On September 26, 1970 she married
Herbert Pennock in Lomax, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 28, 2000.
She was a graduate of the LaHarpe, Illinois High School. Earlier in life she worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, IRC in Burlington and as a waitress at Pat’s Tap in Dallas City and the Arion Restaurant in Burlington. She worked for Rockwell International in Cedar Rapids for 23 years, retiring in April 1995.
She is survived by one son, Kevin (Teresa) Thompson of Lomax, four daughters, Rhonda (Steve) Foley and Andrea Thompson all of Cedar Rapids, Melanie (Rick) Evans of Lomax and Leana (Karl) Yard of LaHarpe, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one step-daughter, Audrey Queen of Alexandria, Missouri, one step-son, Anthony Pennock of Fort Madison, Iowa, one sister, Vesta Carey and one niece, Charlette Hamilton both of Letts, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one granddaughter and one niece.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 13, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery, Dallas City, Illinois. A Rosary will be recited at 1:30 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M., Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for the Hospice of Mercy, Cedar Rapids, IA, LaHarpe Union Church or the Carman Church, Carman, IL.
Doris M. Pfolsgrof
Mrs. Doris M. Pfolsgrof, age 101, of Carthage, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 6:15 A.M. at the Hancock Country Nursing Home in Carthage.
Doris was born on April 10, 1908 in Pilot Grove Township IL., the daughter of Ray and Juie Scott Hull. She married
Willard "Tony" Pfolsgrof in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage, Il. on April 3, 1945. He preceded her in death in February 1997.
She graduated from Donnellson, Ia. high school and completed her education at Carthage College. She taught in the Arenzville, Il. school system and there met her future husband. She and her husband lived in Elgin, Il. where Tony attended the Elgin Watch School. While there she served as a librarian to provide living expenses. They eventually opened their own jewelry store in Litchfield, Il. and retired there after 39 years of successful business. She was a member of the local Lutheran Church and an active member of Zonta, a professional women’s group. They also traveled worldwide to places that had a connection to their profession .She returned to Carthage and resided at Almost Home until moving to the Hancock County Nursing Home in May of 2005.
She is survived by a niece, Debbie Ehret, a nephew, Mike Hull, two sisters-in-law and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Gerald Hull.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Concord cemetery, Concord, Illinois with Mark Nichols officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, IL. Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Hancock County, the Hancock County Nursing Home, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Sue Ellen Porter
Sue Ellen Porter, age 68 of Sunnyvale, California, formerly of the Dallas City, Illinois area, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday May 17, 2010 at her home.Sue Ellen was born on November 16, 1941 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Her parents are Carroll Porter (died 1998) and Mary Sparrow Porter who lives in Santa Barbara, California.
Sue Ellen married
her beloved David Bogdanoff on December 26, 1974. Together they played music, loved folk dancing, established folk dance music bands, studied languages, especially Spanish, and traveled extensively. Most recently they traveled to South Africa where they had the dream trip of a life time as they went on Safari and photographed the wild animals they observed in nature.
Sue Ellen first attended Houghton College in New York and then the University of Maryland. Sue Ellen was ordained a Presbyterian minister in June of 1975 after graduating from Fuller Theological Seminary and has pursued her Christian faith in many ways. A special love was her participation with David in three different Latino churches.
For the last ten years Sue Ellen has extensively researched family history and produced an amazing genealogy book for the family. As part of her research she visited the birthplaces of her mother's French Huguenot ancestors and her father's German ancestors. She stated, "Their stories of faith and courage touched me deeply."
Sue Ellen will be especially missed at the 74th Annual Sparrow Family Reunion held every Father's Day in Crepo Park in Burlington. She brought her happy energy and playfulness to this family event.
Sue Ellen is survived by her husband David, her mother Mary Porter, her Aunt Ruth Sparrow and her Uncle Walt Sparrow. She also is survived by and much loved by her sister and her sister's husband, Bob and Lyn Carman, by her nieces and nephew and their spouses, Patricia Carman, Laurie and Harald von Melchner, Maire and Patrick Radis, and Eric and Isabelle Carman and her grand nieces and nephews, Willie Radis, Gina von Melchner, Corey Radis, Ricki Carman, Max von Melchner, Isabelle Radis, Juliette Carman, Elise Carman, and Theodore Carman. Also much loved are David's brothers. Peter and Stephen and their wives, Mary and Sherry, and nieces Kira Elizabeth Bogdanoff and Kristen Mary Bogdanoff.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 22, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, immediately followed by the burial in Dallas cemetery in the plot with her Grandfather and Grandmother, Lewis and Susana Porter, and her father, Carroll Porter. No Visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions to cancer research are appreciated.
Glenn W. Poulter
Mr. Glenn W. Poulter, 77, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 12:02 A.M. at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born September 18, 1932, the son of Virgil E. and Hazel D. Booher Poulter. On January 12, 1957 he married
Mary Ellen Lucas. She preceded him in death on November 6, 1983.
He is survived by a foster son, Patrick Powers of Dallas City, special friends, Bill and Alyce Edwards of Dallas City, 4 brothers, Richard (Elsie) Poulter of Fort Madison, Rodney (Shirley) Poulter of Beverly, Illinois, Russell (Ellen) Poulter of Blandinsville, Illinois and Dewayne (Rita) Poulter of Dallas City, 5 sisters, Betty (Dale) Emery of Mendon, Illinois, Shirley (Steven) Lieurance of Clearwater, Kansas, Janet (Charles) Cox of LaHarpe, Illinois Bonnie (Roy) Kershner of Bushnell, Illinois and Kay Thacker of Burlington, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 5 brothers, 2 in infancy, and 1 sister.
Visitation for family and close friends will be held at the Poulter home in Dallas City on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. Private graveside services will be held at Harris cemetery on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.
Dorothea Elizabeth Rehling
Dorothea Elizabeth Rehling, age 94 of Abingdon, Illinois, formerly of Stronghurst, died at 1:02 p.m. Saturday September 11, 2010 in the Abingdon Care Center. She was born August 30, 1916 in Mount Hamil, Iowa, the daughter of Riley and Florence Magerkurth Glendening. On May 9, 1937, she married
Frederick Rehling. He preceded her in death on January 23, 1965.
Mrs. Rehling was a longtime resident of Stronghurst. She had been employed at U.S. Borax Co. in Burlington, Stronghurst schools cafeteria, and the former Fiedler Funeral Home in Stronghurst. She was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter - Janet (Chris) Richardson of Fort Mill, SC., one son - Jerry Rehling of Abingdon, IL., six grandchildren- Barry and Beau Rehling, Kelly Batson, Joseph and Jonathan Richardson, and Carrie Baden, six great grandchildren- Caleb and Karly Batson, Madelyn and Melody Richardson, Kaitlyn and Jackson Baden, and three sisters- Juanita (Clarence) Denadel of Pella, IA., and Arlene Rosetti and Shirley Wilkins, both of Galesburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, five sisters- June Barnes, Marguerite Hoambrecker, Betty Bowlyou, Bobbie Williams, and Lucille Riceman, and two brothers- Bob and Howard Glendening.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Carman cemetery, Carman, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Glen T. Roberts
Mr. Glen T. Roberts, 78, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 3:50 A.M. at his home.
He was born August 15, 1931 near Carthage, Illinois the son of Albert and Ruth Latherow Roberts. On June 24, 1955 he married
Joan E. Zern in Carthage.
Mr. Roberts was a graduate of the Dallas City High School. He worked for the Santa Fe RR, Sheaffer Pen Co., the IAAP for 15 years and retired from G.E. in 1993 after working there for 20 years. He was a member and Elder of the First Christian Church in Dallas City where he taught High School Sunday School for 17 years. At the time of his death he was serving as substitute Sunday School teacher for the Older Class. He was an avid sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed following and supporting the high school basketball program and liked to hunt ducks, geese and turkeys.
He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Jeff (Leslie) Roberts of Lomax, Illinois, and Rick (Cherise) Roberts of Chicago, 2 daughters, Rose (Greg) Dillard of Monmouth, Illinois and Laura (John) Goudschaal of Quincy, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, 1 step-grandson and7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Dallas City with James Oliver, Will Fowler and Brent Sparrow officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Saturday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City First Christian Church or the Blessing Hospice.
Rose Mary Roberts
Mrs. Rose Mary Roberts, 82, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 10:37 A.M. at the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.
She was born on June 17, 1928 in Burnside, Illinois, the daughter of Keith and Elma Mae Furrow Markey. She married
Richard Roberts in 1977.
She was born and raised in Burnside where she graduated from high school. Earlier in life she worked as a nurses aid. She had lived in LaHarpe since 1977.
She is survived by her husband, 3 daughters, Shirley Parsano, Sharon Rayburn and Ruth McConnell all of LaHarpe, 1 step-daughter, Margie Hillgardner of Blue Grass, Iowa, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Maryann Swain of Fountain Green, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, 1 great-grandson and one brother.
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 8, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established.
Betty J. Ronner
Betty J. Ronner, age 78 of Gladstone, Illinois died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday July 22, 2010 at her home. She was born November 22, 1931 near Paloma, Illinois, the daughter of Albert L. and Daisy H. Wheeler Gooding. On December 11, 1971, she married
Edwin Ronner in Galesburg, Illinois.
Betty had lived much of her adult life in Gulfport, Illinois before moving to Gladstone following the flood of 2008. She had worked at the Burlington Basket Factory and Vista Bakery for many years. She enjoyed auctions and yard sales and was active in the Gulfport Ambulance Boosters organization.
Survivors include her husband, two daughters - Sandra (Rusty) Decker of Gladstone, Dawn (John) Legier of Makanda, IL., four sons - Terry (Sharon) Garner of Stronghurst, David Bridgman of Galesburg, IL., Damien (Nancy Hall) Ronner of Burlington, IA., Darren (Megan) Ronner of Stronghurst, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one sister - Ruth Miller of Lynchburg, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:45 a.m. Monday July 26, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Carman cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Henderson County Health Department.
J. LaVern Root
Jesse LaVern Root, age 80 of Raritan, Illinois died at 12:05 P.M. Monday April 12, 2010 at his home. He was born January 20, 1930 in Frederick, Illinois, the son of Jesse and Alice Sears Root. On November 27, 1949, he married
Mary Downey. They later divorced.
Mr. Root had managed the Raritan Feed and Farm Supply for several years and later was employed by J.I. Case Company in Burlington for twenty years.
Survivors include one daughter - Sherri (Lyle) Lant of Raritan, four sons - Danny Root of Good Hope, IL., David (Christine) Root of Monmouth, IL., Gary (Janet) Root of Stronghurst, IL., Jerry Root of Muscatine, IA., nine grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister - Della McDonald of Havana, IL., and three brothers - George (Gwen) Root of Gillespie, IL., Donny (Mary) Root of Rushville, IL., and Larry (Nancy) Root of Richmond, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother - Eldred Root, and one great grandson - Matthew Craig Doornbos.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday April 16, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Jay Cowell officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove cemetery near Media, IL. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for Henderson County Hospice.
Barbara Lee Schroeder
Barbara Lee Schroeder, age 81 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday October 13, 2010 in the University Hospital in Iowa City. She was born October 22, 1928 in Lomax, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Dorothy Lund Klossing. On February 11, 1948, she married
Paul Schroeder in Olena, Illinois.
She was employed at Vancil Locker Service in Stronghurst for thirteen years, and later owned and operated Schroeder’s Dairy Stop in Stronghurst for eleven years. She also assisted her husband with the operation of the family farm. She was an active member of the Stronghurst Christian Church where she taught Bible School for several years.
Survivors include her husband, one son - Ed (Cathy) Schroeder of Burlington, Iowa, two daughters - Sharon (Don) Annegers of Stronghurst, Connie Moberg of Gladstone, IL., one grandson - Josh Schroeder, two brothers - Dean (Joan) Klossing of Biggsville, IL., Don (Nancy) Klossing of Cassville, WI., and one sister - Verlee (Bill) Hatcher of Plano, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter- Karen Schroeder.
Visitation will be from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday October 18, 2010 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Rev. Steve Minkler officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established for the Stronghurst Ambulance Service or the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Donald V. Scott
Mr. Donald V. Scott, 78, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 5:20 P.M. at the Fort Madison Health Center, Fort Madison, Iowa.
He was born February 26, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Roy and Grace Inis Scott. On May 24, 2009 he married
Barbara Rettig.
Mr. Scott was raised in Chicago and was a retired truck driver. He enjoyed his model trains and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, 5 sons, Joe Scott of San Diego, CA, Tony Scott of Essex, IL, Bill Scott of New York, Robert Scott of Wisconsin and Donald Scott of Michigan, 3 daughters, Barb Myers and Tina McCorkle both of Essex and Kitty Balatto of Florida, 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Sadie Whitehead of Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Donna Jean Scott, 2 grandchildren and 4 siblings.
Following cremation a memorial service will be held at the Lomax Church of the Nazarene, Lomax, Illinois at a later date. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City is assisting with the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established for the Iowa Hospice.
Ruth Sparrow
Ruth Sparrow passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 18, at the age of 92. Ruth was born October 31, 1917, the fourth of six children of Harry and Bessie Sparrow of Lomax, Illinois. Ruth lived the last 12 years with her sister, Mary Porter, at Vista del Monte.
Niece, Linda Sparrow Foo, states, "Ruth was a hard worker, devoted to helping others, and she set a good example with her integrity and truth. She lived her faith."
Ruth worked in Civil Service as a secretary at Letterkenny Ordnance Depot in Pennsylvania and at the Iowa Ordnance Plant in Burlington, Iowa. She then worked for 23 years as secretarial assistant to the head of the Free Methodist Publishing House in Winona Lake, Indiana. During that time she took full care of her parents and also completely restored a three story stone house that is included in the Indiana Historical Register.
In her early childhood, Ruth attended the one-room Tiwappity School where her father had attended and where later her mother taught. After high school graduation she attended Western Illinois University and later graduated from the Burlington Business College of Burlington, Iowa. Ruth spent many years working on family genealogy, edited a book for publication, taught ESL to people from China, loved to cook, loved to entertain, gave wonderful book reviews for her book club and was an excellent secretary. Ruth was a favorite aunt for her many nieces and nephews. Ruth is a member of Goleta Presbyterian Church.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Mary Porter of Santa Barbara, her brother Walter Sparrow of Greeley, Colorado, her Santa Barbara family of niece, Lyn Carman, great-nieces Pat Carman, Laurie von Melchner, Maire Radis, and great-nephew, Eric Carman and many, many other nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Ruth at Vista del Monte on Saturday, September 4th at 2 p.m. Her funeral will be held at the Nazarene Church in Lomax, Illinois, on Saturday, September 18 at 2 p.m. Rev. John Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery near Lomax.
Ray Sheldon "Tuffy" St. Clair
Mr. Ray Sheldon “Tuffy” St. Clair, 88, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 10:13 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
He was born April 1, 1922 in Henderson County, Illinois, the son of Roy Fredrick and Ruby Jane (Freeman) St. Clair. On March 29, 1947 he married
Doris A. Steepleton in Burlington, Iowa.
Mr. St. Clair was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army from 1942 - 1945. He worked for the TP & W Railroad and later the BNSF Railroad, retiring in 1986 after 30 years. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion post 301 and the Carthage VFW Post 5117.
He is survived by his wife, 1 daughter, Sheila Reid of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Graveside services with Military Rites will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 5, 2010 at the LaHarpe cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Care Center or the LaHarpe American Legion. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.
