Doren L. Young
Mr. Doren L. Young, 84, of Pontoosuc, Illinois passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at 12:11 P.M. at his home.
He was born December 27, 1925 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Charles and Bertha Doty Young. On August 8, 1952 he married
Norma Lee Seigfried in Kahoka, Missouri.
Mr. Young served in the US Army during World War II. He was a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. He worked as a commercial fisherman for many years and then worked for Gleason Corporation in Fort Madison for 33 years. He attended the Baptist Church in Nauvoo, Illinois.
Surviving are his wife, one son Elliott Young of Colusa, Illinois, one daughter, Leona Young of Pontoosuc, Illinois, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one brother, Albert “Red” Young of Nauvoo.
He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Young five brothers, three sisters and his parents.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. William Sturdivant officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday, from noon until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
W. Eugene "Gene" Adcock
Mr. W. Eugene “Gene” Adcock, 78, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 10:45 P.M. at his home.
He was born June 23, 1932 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Wesley F. and Lola VanPelt Adcock. On October 11, 1953 he married
Elsie Hilgren in Abingdon, Illinois.
Mr. Adcock served in the US Navy for 61/2 years during the Korean War. He worked at the Disco, Illinois elevator and retired from Dadants in Dallas City, Illinois. He was a longtime member of the LaHarpe Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Cheryl Sickels of LaHarpe and Diane (Sheldon) Avery of Glenburn, North Dakota, 1 son Rick (Rhonda) Adcock of LaHarpe, 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, 1 step-great-granddaughter, his mother, Lola Heimer of Abingdon and 1 brother, Don (Ola) Adcock of Abingdon.
He was preceded in death by 1 son, Randy Adcock, 1 grandson, Erick Adcock and his father.
Graveside services with Military Rites, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at LaHarpe cemetery with Evan Sheckler officiating. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday. A memorial has been established.
Brian L. Blythe
Mr. Brian L. Blythe, 45, of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Friday, June 27, 2008 at 8:55 P.M. at the Aventura Hospital in Aventura, Florida.
Brian was born October 3, 1962 in La Harpe, IL and was the son of Lowell and Marcia Kern Blythe.
Survivors include three sisters, Julie (Rick) Jarvis, Mahomet, Donna Jo Lydy, Loveland, Ohio, Linda (Max) Comstock, Springfield, two brothers, Robert (Paula) Blythe and Gary (Cheryl) Blythe, all of La Harpe and 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated from La Harpe High School, Bradley University, received his teaching degree from Western Illinois University and received his Master’s Degree from the University of Miami, FL.
After receiving his teaching degree, he taught business classes at Sacred Heart Griffin, Springfield, IL. He continued his career as Director of Admissions at Robert Morris College, Springfield for over 10 years. After moving to Miami, he was employed by the University and was Director of Pre-College Programs.
He was a member of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Ambassador for United Way projects, participated in the Rotary International Exchange Program to Sweden and other leadership projects in Miami. He was actively involved in the St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church in Miami Beach, FL.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, was an avid sports fan, and his love for traveling lead him to 5 of the 7 continents.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. The family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 11th at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Memorials may be made in Brian’s name to St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church, 4760 Pine Tree Dr., Miami Beach, FL 33140 or a charity of the donor’s choice.A celebration of Brian’s life was held at St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 3 in Miami, FL.
Mildred M. Blythe
Mrs. Mildred M. Blythe, 86, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 11:35 P.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She was born June 30, 1921 near Fountain Green, Illinois, the daughter of Alexander Walker and Cly Blandin Mustain McConnell. On February 14, 1940 she married
Keith Alton Blythe in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1986.
Mildred was a member and past president of theLaHarpe Chapter of the PEO and served as president of the Blandin House Museum in Blandinsville, Illinois. She was also a member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and Deacon.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Clugston of Nappanee, Indiana, three sons, Michael Lynn (Barbara) Blythe, Gregory Keith (Dianne) Blythe and Philip Blandin (Teresa) Blythe, all of LaHarpe, eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one brother, Charles A. McConnell of Blandinsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son-in-law, Conrad Clugston, two grandchildren, Stephen and Christopher Clugston and one sister, Mary Lou McKinney.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Darlene Booton
Darlene Booton, age 78 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 1:50 P.M. Sunday February 17, 2008 in the OSF St Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born January 10, 1930, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Otto Gilbert and Hazel Poulter Andrew. On January 18, 1952, she married
Boyd Booton in Sacramento, California. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1997.
Darlene was a homemaker, and had worked in the dietary department of Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab for several years. Earlier in life, she had worked as a sales clerk at the former Dallas City Lumber Yard in Dallas City, Illinois.She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, cake decorating, and being with her family and friends. She was a member of the Community Senior Citizens and the Stronghurst Christian Church.
Survivors include her mother, Hazel Andrew of Dallas City, Illinois, three daughters - Sheila (and Hector) Garcia of Dayton, Ohio, Janice (and Alan) Johnson of Alexis, IL., Lesa (and Jeff) Lawrence of Bemidji, MN., one son - Kevin Booton of Springfield, IL., 10 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren two sisters - Sherrill (and Ernie). Gilpin of Dallas City, IL., Jeanine Rosenboom of Fort Madison, Iowa, and her beloved cats. She was preceded in death by her husband, father, one sister - Phyllis Black and one brother - Robert Andrew.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday February 20, 2008 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Ron Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Biggsville cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until time of services Wednesday at the Church. Memorials have been established for the Henderson County Humane Society, and the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens.
Roger D. Bousman
Mr. Roger D. Bousman, 61, of Lomax Illinois died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 11:28 p.m. at his home.
He was born August 9, 1947 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Joyce Langfitt Bousman. In 1965 he married
Carla Carpenter. He later married
Kathleen Symmonds Schaefer in Burlington Iowa on December 29, 1989.
He was a 1965 graduate of the Clinton, Iowa High School. He then served in both the Army and the Navy, and served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He attended the Clinton Junior College, Blackhawk College, the University of Maryland, the University of Iowa, and Tulane University. He was a Quality Assurance Specialist at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 35 years. He was an avid Cubs fan and a member of the Lomax Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, his mother, Joyce Bousman of Clinton, Iowa, one son, Roger D. Bousman Jr. of Perry, Iowa, two daughters, Misty (Mark) Ray of Perry, Iowa and Jenni (Brad) Richardson of LaHarpe, Illinois, 11 grandchildren, 1 sister Barbara (Don) Jacobson of Clinton, Iowa and one brother, Darrell Bousman of Sterling, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his father, one son, Eric Schaefer, one grandson, Gregory Bousman, and two brothers, Bill and Gary Bousman.
Services will be held Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor John Bremer officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday, December 26th at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. Ronald Bowlyow
Ronald G. Bowlyow, age 65 of rural Gladstone, Illinois, died at 3:23 P.M. MondayJune 9, 2008 in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born February 7, 1943 at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Gail F. and Betty Glendening Bowlyow.
He graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1961, received his diploma in nursing from Burlington Hospital Of Nursing and his associate degree from Burlington Community College in 1966, bachelor’s degree from Loretto Heights College, Denver, CO in 1972, and Master’s Degree in medical-surgical nursing from the University of Hawaii in 1978.
After completing his nursing education, he worked for a short time at Burlington Hospital in the emergency room before entering the Army Nurse Corps in October, 1966. He served twenty years as an Army Nurse Corps Officer, retiring in October 1986 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career included tours of duty in Thailand, Vietnam, Hawaii, Germany, and a four and a half year tour at the Pentagon. His field of endeavor was as a nurse administrator and earned him numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit and the coveted Military Medical Merit.
Upon retirement, Ron settled in the Maryland suburbs outside Washington, DC, where he pursued his career as a director of nursing and licensed nursing home administrator. In November 2001, he retired again, relocating to a golf course community in Spring Hill, FL. There he learned the importance of volunteerism, serving on the board of his homeowner’s association as well as editing its newsletter. He also served on the board of the Alzheimer Family Organization and volunteered as a certified Alzheimer trainer. He was active in church as well as other civic organizations.
After two hurricane seasons, Ron made the decision to relocate to his Henderson County roots and moved to Gladstone in 2006. He continued his volunteerism with the Henderson County Health Department, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center, Henderson County Economic Development, and the Henderson County Historical Society, as well as playing an active role as a life-long member of the Carman United Methodist Church. His interest included spending time with family and friends, travel, world and local news, volunteering, gardening, crossword puzzles, and in general, staying active and involved.
Ron is survived by one son - Chad Bowlyow of Burlington, IA., his partner- Wil Womack of rural Gladstone, IL., four sisters - Bonnie (Loren) Johnson of Carman, IL., the Rev. Dr. Joyce Beaulieu (Molly Lovelock) of Lexington, KY., Peggy (Don) Ingles and Jill Lenahan(Joe Moyers) of Lomax, IL., eight cherished nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends throughout the region, US and Europe. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son- Kent who were killed in an automobile accident in 1980.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Friday June 13, 2008 in the Carman United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 P.M. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, per Ron’s request, memorials will be appreciated for the stained glass fund at the Carman United Methodist Church.
Betty Jean Bright
Betty Jean Bright, age 83 of Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:42 A.M. Wednesday February 27, 2008 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born March 12, 1924 in Terre Haute, Illinois, the daughter of George Robert and Lillie Miria Strausbaugh Sea. On December 23, 1941, she married
Wendell Faye Bright in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 20, 2001.
Betty owned and operated Bri-Seay House Antiques for over thirty years. Prior to that, she worked at the Terre Haute (Illinois) Grade School Cafeteria and the Lomax Canning Factory. She enjoyed collecting antiques, especially pine, walnut and cherry furniture. Betty spent her time restoring antique furniture, gardening, cooking, and enjoying her cabin on the Mississippi River.
Survivors include two daughters - Patricia (and Elliott) Anderson, and Sherry Knutson, both of Burlington, one son - Charles (and Sally) Bright of Burlington, five grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and one sister - Anna Jane Johnson of San Benito, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday March 3, 2008 in the Carman cemetery with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Friends may call as they desire after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:30 P.M. Monday at Banks & Beals. Memorials have been established for the Heritage Trust of Burlington and the Des Moines County Humane Society.
Okle M. Browning
Mrs. Okle Browning, 90, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at 2:35 PM at her home.
She was born April 11, 1917 near Fountain Green, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Inez Burrow Campbell. On June 25, 1938 she married
Luther Browning in Ottumwa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 15, 1994.
She was a graduate of LaHarpe High School in 1936. She was a member of the LaHarpe United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 30 years. She also attended the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City.
She was a homemaker and also worked at the Lomax Canning Factory until it closed and then became a nurses aid at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She is survived by 1 son, Leon Browning of Durham, Illinois, 1 daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Olson of LaHarpe, 5 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, Haldene “Dee” Campbell of Los Angeles, California, Clee Campbell of Quincy, Illinois and Galen Campbell of Beloit, Wisconsin, 1 sister, Era “Sissy” Long of Decatur, Illinois a special brother-in-law and friend, Oscar “Bud” Mittermeyer of LaHarpe and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 daughters, Beverly, in infancy, and Carol Boone, 3 brothers, Bernard, Daren and Larry Campbell and 1 sister, Erice Campbell and 1 great-granddaughter.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Revs. Larry Menschel and Louis Day officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Daisy E. Bundy
Mrs. Daisy E. Bundy, 71, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Friday, September 19, 2008 at 12:20 AM at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
She was born April 12, 1937 in Dallas City, the daughter of Floyd and Elizabeth Nichols Maynard. On January 16, 1954 she married
Amos “Frosty” Bundy in LaHarpe, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 5, 2004.
Mrs. Bundy attended school in Dallas City. Earlier in life she worked at Lehigh- Leopold in Burlington, as a nurses aid at the LaHarpe Hospital and assisted her husband in the operation of the Sinclair Gas Station in Lomax. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and family cookouts.
She is survived by 1 daughter, Deborah (Steven) Thompson of Enterprise, Alabama, 2 sons, Jim (Brenda) Bundy of Williamston, South Carolina, and David Bundy of Lomax, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren 3 sisters, Dorothy Gilpin and Sonja Shipman both of Dallas City and Peggy Rockhold of Lomax and 1 brother, Tom Maynard of Pontoosuc, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 sister, Marrietta Hnatt, 1 brother, Butch Maynard and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 22, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Cecil R. Burford Jr.
Cecil Ray Burford Jr., age 82 of LaHarpe, Illinois died at 5:20 P.M. Tuesday December 30, 2008 in the Carthage Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1926 near Burnside, Illinois, the son of Cecil Ray and Ruby Hickman Burford. He married
Madelyn Stabler on June 10, 1944 in Carthage. She preceded him in death on January 21, 1997.
Mr. Burford was an army veteran of World War II. He farmed all of his life in the Durham and Fountain Green Townships. He also worked in construction for several years. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and the Laborers International Union Local # 231.
Survivors include one daughter - Susan Pfeiffer of Dallas City, Illinois, two sons- Edward (Barbara) Burford of LaHarpe, Matt (Kim) Burford of Fountain Green, IL., eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one sister - Deloris (Jim) Woodside of LaHarpe, and one half-brother - Dan (Janet) Burford of Niota, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters- Pattsy Powelson and Idalene Link.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday January 3, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Robert Tillman officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
Lonnie G. Burk
Mr. Lonnie G. Burk, 45, of St. Francisville, Missouri died Thursday, January 31, 2008 near Victor, Iowa.
He was born September 7, 1962 in LaHarpe, Illinois. On August 31, 2002 he married
Denise Cowell in Gladstone, Illinois.
Mr. Burk worked for Cessford Construction for 11 years and for the past 11 months was a driver for TMC Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Denise, his parents, Buck and Jo Burk of Winchester, Illinois, Carl and Donna Smith of Shelbyville, Missouri and Milford and Bea Pence of Lomax, Illinois, his grandmother, Ruth Gibson of Cullman, Alabama, 4 step-children, Travis Devine of Hamilton, Illinois, Trista Weinreich of Lomax, Joshua Yeakey of Dallas City, Illinois and Britani Yeakey of St. Francisville, Missouri, 6 grandchildren, 5 brothers, Jimmy Pence, Timmy Pence and Chad Pence all of Lomax, John Pence of LaHarpe and Daniel Burk of Winchester, 5 sisters, Vickie Hardin of Bellflower, California, Kathy Blevins, Sherry McVey and Lori Duffie all of Winchester and Connie Monroe of Quincy, Illinois.
