Mable E. Cox

Mable E. Cox, age 79 of rural Lomax, Illinois died at 11:10 P.M. Monday January 21, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois. She was born January 15, 1929 in Carman, Illinois, the daughter of Cyril and Verda Kizer Good. On December 19, 1946, she married Thurman "Dick" Cox in Gladstone, Illinois.

Mrs. Cox was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. She had worked at the former Lomax Canning Factory, Carman Grocery, and was an Avon representative for over 30 years. She was active in the Carman United Methodist Church, where she helped organize the "Kids' Club". She also served as a correspondent for the Henderson County Quill, where she provided the "Carman News" for many years.

Survivors include her husband, one daughter - Dixie (and Jack) Todd of Lomax, Illinois, one son - Eldon Cox of Kansas City, Missouri, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister - Macy Donaldson and one brother - John D. Good.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday January 25, 2008 in the Carman United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials have been established for the Carman United Methodist Church and Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.

Jerry W. Duffy

Mr. Jerry W. Duffy, 64, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, August, 13, 2008 at 3:38 P.M. at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

He was born December 1, 1943 in Peoria, Illinois the son of Maynard and Alma Jean Zern Duffy. On July 31, 1965 he married Mary R. Kuntz in Burlington, Iowa.

Mr. Duffy worked at J.I. Case Co. in Burlington for 36 years, retiring in 1997. For the past eleven years he served as the Dallas City City Marshall and was a deputy marshall for many years prior. He was a member of the UAW Local 807 and was active in the United Way.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Rusty Duffy of Dallas City and Mike (Melanie) Duffy of Roseville, Illinois, 4 grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Duffy.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Fire Department or the Lomax Ambulance Service.

James T. Farniok

Mr. James T. Farniok, 84, of Macomb, Illinois passed away Friday, July 4, 2008 at 5:30 A.M. at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb.

He was born April 26, 1924 in Wright County, Minnesota, the son of Martin and Margaret Cebulla Farniok. On June 30, 1948 he married Phyllis Haverty in Maple Lake, Minnesota.

Mr. Farniok owned and operated Farniok Memorials in Macomb since 1958. He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb where he had served on the parish council. He was a member of the Third and Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus and was a past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He enjoyed tending his farm in Hancock County.

He is survived by his wife, five daughters, Linda (Bill) Fisher of Sugar Grove, IL, Gail Roe of Godfrey, IL, Pam Farniok of Springfield, IL, Vicki Ludolph of Nauvoo, IL and Jackie Lee of Macomb, five sons, Jerry (Pam) Farniok of Castle Rock, CO, Tim (Jamie) Farniok of Dallas City, IL, Michael (Carla) Farniok of Industry, IL, Patrick Farniok of Macomb and Craig Farniok of Godfrey, IL, 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Wally and Richard Farniok both of Delano, MN and three sisters, Valeria Topel of Delano, MN, Margie Abdnor of Longmont, CO and Eileen Merchant of Naples, FL.

He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 7, 2008 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Richard Pricco officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery, Macomb. The family will meet with friends at St. Paul Catholic Church Sunday, July 6, 2008 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 8:00. A memorial fund has been established for St. Paul School. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.

Winnie M. Fark

Mrs. Winnie Mabel Fark, 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 4:15 A.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

She was born July 13, 1916 in Riner, Virginia, the daughter of Dennis and Bessie Akers Reynolds. On April 10, 1935 she married Harry R. Fark in Christiansburg, Virginia. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1992.

She graduated from Auburn High School in 1934. She helped on the family farm by gardening and milking cows. Later, she drove a school bus for Bradshaw School and served as a cook at the LaHarpe High School. She loved to read and travel. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the LaHarpe Union Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Dobson of LaHarpe and Carole Butler and her husband, Michael, of Dallas City, Illinois, one son Harry Fark Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of LaHarpe, son-in-law, Eugene Foster of Lockridge, Iowa, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Dora Gae Lester of Christiansburg, Virginia and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Phyllis Foster.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. The family will meet with friends Wednesday from 1:00 PM until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Public Library or the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

Norma Jane Ford

Norma Jane Ford, age 73 of Carman, Illinois died at 12:47 P.M. Thursday September 11, 2008 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born November 27, 1934 near Mount Sterling, Illinois, the daughter of Toby A. and Nina Stuller Phillips. On July 29, 1951, she married Earl L. “Buster” Ford Jr. in Burlington, Iowa.

She attended Henderson County grade schools and Stronghurst High School. She received her diploma from Burlington High School and graduated from Southeastern Community College Nursing Program as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She had worked at Monmouth, Roseville, and Burlington Extended Care facilities. She had also worked at various sales positions including Rheinschmidt’s Flooring, Gerdes & Sparrow Real Estate, and McGregor Furniture Company.

She, and her husband, raised their family on the family farm near Carman. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, collecting antiques, gardening and cooking.

Survivors include her husband, two sons- Mike (Sandra) Ford and Mark (Olive) Ford, both of Carman, two daughters - Valerie (Gary) Colburn of Springdale, Arkansas, Stephanie (Jim) Covert of Biggsville, IL., seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and step father - Norman Masterson.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday September 15, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for the American Lung Association.

Mary Frice

Mrs. Mary Frice, 92, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, May 23, 2008 at 12:10 P.M. at the Gilpin Home in Dallas City.

She was born February 3, 1916 in Niota, Illinois, the daughter of William and Mary Ellen Haigh Bertschi. On November 8, 1941 she married Wells A. Frice in Mexico, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August, 28, 1990.

Mary worked for W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co for 13 years. She also worked in the lunch room for the Dallas City School. She was a member of the Dallas City Senior Citizens where she served as coordinator for the Meals Program. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Dallas City.

She loved to travel, work in her yard, cook and spend time with her family. She enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s activities and liked watching pro baseball and basketball. One of the highlights of her life was getting to see Michael Jordan play.

She is survived by 2 sons, Wells “Lynn” (Theresa) Frice of Mundelein, Illinois and Randal (Jennifer) Frice of Burlington, Iowa, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 sister-in-law, Julie Bertschi of Dallas City and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers, John, Chet, Mike and Rolla Bertschi and 4 sisters, Kay May, Grace Bertschi, Edna McCannon and Ethel Bergthold.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Burial will be in the Dallas City cemetery. Friends may call between 4:00 & 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home Friday from noon until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Fire Department, Dallas City Senior Citizens or the Gilpin Home.

Blanche W. Galbraith

Blanche W. Galbraith, age 96 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 7:55 A.M. Monday June 30, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois. She was born November 27, 1911 in Stronghurst, the daughter of Milton and Metta Curry Beardsley. On June 9, 1951, she married Everett Keener. He preceded her in death in 1959. She later married Marion Galbraith in 1972. He preceded her in death in 1978.

Blanche attended all 12 grades, and graduated from Stronghurst High School at the age of seventeen. At This time the country was locked in a depression. She took a job as the night operator for the telephone company in Stronghurst and saved $150 to pay for her first year of schooling at Illinois State Normal University, Normal, Illinois. By working to supplement her funds, Blanche completed her second year at a cost of $130. She later received her degree in 1944 in elementary education by going to summer school and teaching during the winter.

Her first job after two years of advanced schooling was teaching at the Burrell School near Olena, where for one year she would ride a horse for ten miles each day to fulfill her teaching contract. She then taught two years at the Media Grade School, two years in Danville, IL., nine years in Galesburg, IL., and returned to Media Grade School teaching a combined first and second grade class for six years; and then went to Stronghurst in the fall of 1958, where she taught until she retired in 1972. In all, thirty eight years had been spent instructing children.

Blanche centered her life around her teaching and her students. For the 1967-1968 school year, she was one of the ten finalists in the State Teacher Of The Year contest. She was a charter member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the Daniel McMillan Chapter of NSDAR, having served as Secretary, Regent, and Treasurer. She was a member of the Stronghurst Presbyterian Church, where she had served as trustee and deacon. She had served as a supervisor of student teachers from Western Illinois University of Macomb, IL., was a member of the Henderson County Retired Teachers Association, where she served as president and secretary, was a trustee of the Henderson County Public Library District, where she was secretary of the board for two years, and was a member of the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens.

Blanche truly loved children and many in the community thank her for the excellent beginning of their own education in her first grade class.

Friends may call from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. Friday July 4, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. There will be no family visitation. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday July 5th in the Stronghurst cemetery with Pam Moore officiating. Memorials have been established for the Henderson County Public Library and the Salvation Army for Henderson County Flood Relief.

Doris Mae Galbraith

Doris Mae Galbraith, age 84 of Benton, Arkansas, died Friday February 29, 2008. She was born December 3, 1923 in Henderson County, Illinois, the daughter of Harry and Vera Elizabeth Detrick Carner. She was married to Virgil Galbraith. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include her brother - Max (and Bonnie) Carner of Royal, Arkansas.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday March 5, 2008 in the Ashby Funeral Home in Benton, Arkansas. Friends may call after 9:00 A.M. Friday March 7, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. in the Strongurst cemetery with Rev. Gene Turner officiating.

Minnie R. Gatton

Mrs. Minnie R. Gatton, 94, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 6:55 AM at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

She was born November 27, 1914 near Lomax, Illinois, the daughter of John and Nellie (Longcor) Williams. On June 6, 1936 she married Herbert P. Wheatley. He died October 14, 1972. On November 22, 19 84 she married Elmer Gatton. He died July 11, 1992.

She lived near Terre Haute and LaHarpe, Illinois for many years and from 1983 - 1992 lived in What Cheer, Iowa. She returned to LaHarpe following the death of Mr. Gatton. In her earlier years she worked at the Lomax Canning Factory and was a member and attended the Lomax Nazarene Church. She enjoyed reading and embroidering.

She is survived by one son, Eugene (Sharon) Wheatley of Burnside, Illinois, two daughters, Rosetta (Vernon) Kitzman of What Cheer, Iowa and Virginia (Michael) Palmer of LaHarpe, 29 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, three sons, Clyde, Robert and David Wheatley, two daughters, Norma Shirts and Joan Thomas, one grandson, Chad Palmer one great-granddaughter, Tiffane Wheatley, son-in-law Harold Thomas and daughter-in-law Shirley Wheatley.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

Ruth E. Gill

Mrs. Ruth E. Gill, 83, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 1:25 AM at the Wesley Village in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born August 17, 1924 in Bartonville, Illinois, the daughter of William and Kathrine Carr. On July 2, 1962 she married Dean Gill in Springfield, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1995.

She lived in Cillicothe, Illinois and Kirksville, Missouri before moving to LaHarpe 25 years ago. She worked for many years at Hollisters in Kirksville. She was a member of the LaHarpe United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one step-son, Mike Gill of Kirksville, MO, one step-daughter, Cindy Hainline of LaHarpe, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband one step-daughter, Sherry Johnson, three brothers and 2 sisters.

Friends may call at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 9 until 11 AM. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 6th at the Chillicothe City cemetery, Chillicothe, IL with Rev. Ted Mitchell officiating. A memorial fund has been established for Wesley Village.

Ernie Gilpin

Mr. Ernie Gilpin, 63, of Dallas City, Illinois died Monday, July 7, 2008 at 11:15 A.M. at his home after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

He was born May 23, 1945 in Pontoosuc, Illinois, the son of George and Nina Hawkins Gilpin. On May 16, 1971 he married Sherrill Andrew in Dallas City.

Mr. Gilpin was a commercial fisherman and for the past 12 years he and his wife cared for the elderly in their home and an adjacent home they called the Gilpin Home. He loved astronomy and looking at the stars with his telescope. He also enjoyed collecting rocks, solving crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Eric Gilpin of Dallas City, one daughter, Jill Gilpin of Dallas City, four grandchildren, Gabrielle, Trevin, Alaina and Joni, six sisters, Bernice Mitchell of Keokuk, IA, Christel Sherwood of Dallas City, Patricia Silk of Fort Madison, Nancy Pence of Dallas City, Joan Dutton of Burlington, IA and Jane Aegator of Cedar Rapids, IA, two brothers, Nolan Gilpin of Niota, IL and Larry Gilpin of Dallas City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

His body has been cremated and per his request no services are planned. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon and a celebration of Ernie’s life at the Senior Citizens Center in Dallas City on July 13, 2008 from 11:00 until 3:00. A memorial fund has been established for the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

Clyde R. Gittings

Clyde Roosevelt Gittings, age 91 of rural Dallas City, Illinois died at 9:58 P.M. Tuesday September 30, 2008 at his home. He was born May 17, 1917 near Lomax, Illinois, the son of Clyde and Clara Vaughn Gittings. On September 30, 1939, he married Verda Mae Scott in Monticello, Missouri.

Mr. Gittings attended schools in Terre Haute, Illinois. After school, he played baseball for the Lomax Bees. He was a supervisor at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown for thirty eight years. He also was a meter reader for WIEC for twenty three years. He was president and manager of the Lomax-Carman Senior Citizens, and was a member of the Lomax Saddle Club. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in all sports, including basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, and softball. He also farmed all of his life, raising horses, cattle and kids.

Survivors include his wife, six daughters- Rosilee (and Gerald) Postle of Carman, IL., Lila Gittings and Sandra Hewitt both of Dallas City, Ellen (and Randy) May of Lomax, IL., Nancy (and Carey) McDonald of Littleton, CO., Peggy (and Randy) Nelson of Mount Union, IA., three sons - Lyle Gittings of Dallas City, Ronnie (and Shelly) Gittings of Stronghurst, IL., Rodney (and Drena) Gittings of Rock Island, IL., twenty seven grandchildren, sixty one great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and three sisters - Ellen Kern of LaHarpe, IL., Helen Breazeale of New Jersey, and Roxie Evans of Lomax, IL. He was preceded in death by one son - Randy Gittings, one grandson - Gary Gittings, one great grandson - Noah Stone, four brothers - Dewey, Chalmer, Vaughn, and Roy Gittings and by one sister - Emma Jean.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday October 4, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Peggy Stott and Rev. Kendall Hetrick, and Harold Correll officiating. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery, near Lomax. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax-Carman Senior Citizens.
