Clarence R. Ingles
Mr. Clarence R. Ingles, 98, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 9:15 AM at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois.
He was born November 4, 1909 in Ash Grove, Iowa, the son of Roy M. and Anna Doan Ingles. On June 23, 1946 he married
Helen Cratsenberg in LaHarpe.
Mr. Ingles served in the U.S. Army from 1926 until 1945. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater in Patton's 3rd Army. He worked for 27 years at Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, retiring in 1973. He then worked for the city of LaHarpe as sexton of the LaHarpe City cemetery for 22 years, retiring in 1995.He served on the LaHarpe Volunteer Ambulance Service for many years, was a little league coach and operated the concession stand. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and the LaHarpe Christian Church where he had served as deacon and elder.
He is survived by his wife, a resident of Oak Lane, one daughter, Melody Hensley of LaHarpe, four sons, Gary Ingles of Pleasant Plains, Illinois, Don Ingles of rural Lomax, Illinois, Randy Ingles of Harvey, Louisiana and Paul Ingles of LaHarpe, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, his son-in-law, Roger Hensley, two sisters and five brothers.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Christian Church or the Henderson County Hospice.
Beulah Jacob
PEORIA HEIGHTS – Beulah V. "Tootie" Jacob, 96, of Peoria Heights, died on Friday, August 1, 2008 at her residence. Born May 13, 1912 in Batavia, Iowa, a daughter of Caswell Dee and Ethel Little Dalton, she married
Lewis Neil Jacob on February 25, 1934 in Macomb, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 11, 2002 in Peoria Heights.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice (Jim) Atterholt of Chardon, Ohio; Wanda (Vern) Martin of Peoria Heights; Janeil (Steve) Henderson of Knoxville, Maryland; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jacob was a homemaker. She attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria where service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 7, 2008. Rev. Douglas Lightly will officiate. A private visitation for family will be held prior to service.
Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in La Harpe cemetery, La Harpe, Illinois. The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria and Banks & Beals Funeral Home in La Harpe are assisting family with arrangements.
Darrell Wayne Jones
Darrell Wayne Jones, age 52 of rural Stronghurst, Illinois died at 5:15 P.M. Sunday September 21, 2008 at his home. He was born September 23, 1955 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of John G. and Vivian May Waterman Jones. On July 19, 1997, he married
Junille Long in Morning Sun, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 29, 2007.
Mr. Jones was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. He had been employed at the Twomey Company in Smithshire for 34 years.
Survivors include three daughters - Audrey (and Roger) Cook, Valerie Corey, and JoBeth Jones, all of Stronghurst, his mother - Vivian Eagen of Oquawka, IL., his father - John Jones of West Des Moines, Iowa, one granddaughter - Arabella Cook, four sisters - Janet (and Jerry) Wratchford of Wylie, TX., Pat Eagen of Sperry, IA., Robin (and Alvin) Gunn, and Anna Sue (and Jim) Clark, both of Covington, Georgia, and one brother - John (and Carla) Jones of Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife and grandparents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday September 24, 2008 in the Peace Lutheran Church in Prairie Grove, Iowa with Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. A memorial fund has been established for his youngest daughter- JoBeth Jones.
Frank H. Jones
Frank Hamilton Jones, 83, of Rural Route Stronghurst IL, passed away at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg at 12:02 AM, Friday, May 2, 2008.
He was born on Mar 13, 1925, in Jacksonville IL, the son of Frank and Mary (Winchester) Jones. He was married
to Analu Painter on Aug 19, 1950, in Macomb IL. She passed away on Nov 21, 1994. He married
Janice Massey on Feb 14, 1998, in Nashua, IA. She survives.
He is also survived by 5 daughters, Jan (Richard Turner) Jones-Turner and June Jones of Vero Beach FL, Joy (Scott) Pollock of Blandinsville, Joanna (Larry) Sholl of Lomax, Julie (Rich) Golinski of Pleasant Hill CA; 5 sons, Jay (Cathy) Jones and Jim (Cind y) Jones of LaHarpe, Joel (Debbie) Jones of Vero Beach FL, Jack (Karen) Jones of Overland Park KS, and Jeff (Shannon) Jones of Stuttgart AR; one stepson, Loren Massey of Washington IL; one stepdaughter, Beth (Mike) Newsome of Urbana; 17 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one sister, Phyllis Beck, and one brother, Bob “Peachy” Jones.
Frank attended elementary schools in Kincaid, South Jacksonville, and Pittsfield . He started high school in Paxton, then graduated from Bushnell in 1942. He attended Western Illinois State Teachers College one quarter before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, where he was a member of the 5th Division; he was with that unit on Iwo Jima when the American flag was raised. After serving 3 years with the Marines, Frank returned to Western, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in Physical Education. While in college, he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track, lettering in all 4 sports. Sometimes it was necessary that he leave the baseball field to participate in a track event and then return to his position with the baseball team. In 1974, he was part of the first class of coaches/athletes to be inducted into the WIU Athletic Hall of Fame.
In addition to college sports, Frank played baseball during summers throughout his college years and during his three years as social studies teacher/basketball coach at Mt Pulaski. In 1952, he moved to the Painter family farm. During his years of farming, he also officiated basketball and football games. After farming for 10 years, he returned to education at Terre Haute Jr. High as social studies teacher/principal before becoming principal at LaHarpe High School. In order to fulfill his administrative positions, Frank returned to WIU to earn his masters degree in Education Administration and a 6th year degree in Administration. He then served as Superintendent for the Northwestern school district for 13 years, retiring in 1981.
Frank was a member of the American Legion and a 32nd degree Mason in the Masonic Lodge. He was a life-long Cubs and Bears fan, an avid golfer for many years, enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles, and having coffee with family and friends in Macomb, Blandinsville and LaHarpe.
His sense of humor and adventure will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service to celebrate Frank Jones’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday May 6, 2008 at the LaHarpe Christian Church, with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. A light meal will follow in the church fellowship hall where the family will visit with family and friends. Frank will be honored with full military rites at the time of burial in Terre Haute cemetery; cremation rites have been accorded. Banks and Beals Funeral Home of LaHarpe will be in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the LaHarpe Carnegie Public Library District, LaHarpe IL, the Blandinsville-Hire Library District, Blandinsville IL, or the Terre Haute Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.
Ellen E. Kern
Ellen Elizabeth (Gittings) Kern, 95, LaHarpe, IL, (formerly of Three Rivers, MI and Burlington IA), died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at the LaHarpe Davier Health Care Center.
Ellen was born May 9, 1913 in Richmond, Arkansas, the daughter of Clyde & Clara (Vaughan) Gittings. On October 28, 1933 she married
Harry Negley Kern in Chicago, IL.
All her life she enjoyed piecing and quilting quilts. She was a 1931 graduate of the Dallas City, Illinois High School. She and her husband owned and operated Kern Grocery in Three Rivers, Michigan from 1949 - 1957.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Monte James (Verlynne) Kern of Three Rivers, MI & Marvin Jack (Patricia) Kern of Lake Wales, Florida. Six Grandchildren: Luellen (Daniel) Carr, Monte Jr. (Chris) Kern, Lynn (Rob) Payne, Michele Kern, Richard (Kelly) Kern, and Miranda (Scott) Egleston. 13 Great Grandchildren, Stephanie, Rebekah, Hannah and Elijah Carr, Tyler and Morgan Kern, Douglas Bennett, Austyn and Henrik Payne, Ryan Kern, Markell Zinkovitch, Richard Kern and Nicolas Kern, 2 sisters, Helen Breazeale of Lebanon, NJ and Roxie Evans of Lomax, IL, 1 sister-in-law, Verda Mae Gittings, Dallas City, IL, 2 brothers-in-law, Glen Kern of Clarksville, AR and Gale (Carol) Kern of LaHarpe, IL. Several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, Great Granddaughter, Mateja Alise Payne, Daughter-in-law, Cynthia Kern Keyser, parents, 1 sister, Emma Jean Siegworth, 5 brothers, Dewey, Chalmer, Samuel, Roy, and Clyde Gittings.
Services will be held at11:00 A.M. Monday, December 1, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Wynona Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. There will be no formal visitation but family and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, November 30, 2008 between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
Leona E. Kershner
Mrs Leona E. Smith Kershner, 96, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 at 2:40 AM at the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, . Illinois.
She was born March 15, 1912 in Lomax, the daughter of Arthur and Julia Worley Smith Sr. On August 1, 1928 she married
Jule Kershner in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 2, 1996.
Mrs. Kershner worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, the Rubber Plant in Keokuk, Iowa, IAAP in Middletown, Iowa and retired from Montgomery Ward in Burlington after 20 years. She was a member of the Lomax Christian Church.
She is survived by three sons, Arthur Kershner of Burlington, Roy Kershner of Bushnell, Illinois and Paul Kershner of Lomax, one daughter, Estella Mumme of Arlington Texas, 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Helen Bunch, one grandson, Todd Kershner, one granddaughter, Teresa Kershner, seven brothers, one sister and her parents.
Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, March 24, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Jon Keck officiating. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery near Lomax. Friends may call after 4:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service.
Cindy L. Kienol
Mrs. Cindy L. Kienol, 57, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, October 30, 2008 at her home.
She was born March 12, 1951 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Neal and Merle Rathbun Patterson.
She was a 1969 graduate of LaHarpe High School and in 1992 earned a degree as a Medical - Clinical Office Assistant from Mid State College. She then worked as a Medical Assistant in Burlington, Iowa for Dr. Bedi and later for Dr. Todd. She enjoyed Nascar, travelling and loved animals.
She is survived by three daughters, Chrissie (Brent) Kienol-Berlett of Fort Madison, Iowa, Heather Kienol of Burlington, Iowa and Niki Kienol of LaHarpe, her father of LaHarpe and one sister, Carol Boecker of Maderia, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
There will be no formal visitation with the family but friends may call at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe on Monday, November 3, 2008 between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Hearts of Hancock County Humane Society.
Harlan Lee Robbins
Mr. Harlan Lee Robbins, 58, of LaHarpe, Illinois died Saturday, February 9, 2008 at his home.
He was born August 2, 1949 in Hemet, California, the son of Clyde Eugene and Shirley B. Compton Robbins.
He lived most of his life in California where he worked as a carpenter. He later moved to Laughlin, Nevada where he worked in the casinos. In 1994 he moved to LaHarpe and most recently worked for Catfish Bend Casino. He enjoyed riding motorcycles.
He is survived by a son Jason Robbins of Oregon, 2 grandchildren, his mother and step-father, Shirley “Rusty” and Harley Palmer of LaHarpe, 1 sister, Darlene Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada, 1 brother, Raymond Robbins of Midway City, California, 1 half sister, Cindy Palmer of Ferris, Illinois and 1 half brother, Michael Hardman of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his father and his twin sister, Marlene Burdg.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Rick Goettsche officiating. A memorial fund has been established.
Josephine Harper Thompson
Josephine Harper Thompson, age 92 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 8:20 P.M. Tuesday February 26, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born October 3, 1915 in Valiant, Oklahoma, the daughter of Newton and Mary Terry Skinner. She first married
Ray Harper. He preceded her in death. She later married
Joseph Thompson. He also preceded her in death.
Josephine was a supervisor for Contadina Foods in Riverbank, California, where she lived mostg of her adult life. She was also an accomplished artist, who’s work is displayed in several galleries. She was a member of the Federated Women’s Club, the Escalon Grange, multiple art groups, and the Methodist Church of Riverbank, California.
Survivors include three daughters - Lena Greene of Fallon, NV., Janice Calhoun of Carman, IL., Paula Webb of Escalon, CA., three sons- Donald Harper of Oakdale, CA., Eugene Harper of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Larry Harper of Ceres, CA., 23 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, one brother - Virgil Skinner of Modesto, CA., and one sister - Mary Walden of Lubbock, TX. She was preceded in death by her husbands, one son - Melvin Harper, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
A memorial service and gathering of friends and family, will be held from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. Saturday March 1, 2008 in the dining area of the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. A memorial fund has been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, 604 Oakwood Drive, Stronghurst, IL. 61480.
Billy C. Kurtz
Mr. Billy C. Kurtz, 74, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 3:15 A.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.
He was born December 25, 1933 in LaHarpe, the son of Joseph E. and Eula Head Kurtz. On June 14, 1959 he married
Karlene Karlson in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Mr. Kurtz was a lifelong resident of LaHarpe. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion Post 301 and a 50 year member of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Jeffrey Lynn Kurtz of Burlington, two grandchildren, Krystal and Justin Kurtz, one brother, Kenneth Kurtz of LaHarpe and one sister, Emmalou Melvin of Macomb, Illinois.
He was prececded in death by one son, Timothy Allen Kurtz, one brother Joseph Ronald Kurtz and one sister, Betty Lee Shallenberger.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Great River Hospice House, LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195, or the LaHarpe United Methodist Church.
Donna E. Mohr
Donna Eileen Mohr, 63, of Dallas City, IL, died Saturday, March 8, 2008, peacefully at her home.
Born April 12, 1944, in Hillsboro, IL, she was the daughter of William Eustace and Kathryn Ann Hiler Payne. On July 16, 1967, she married
Dr. Lewis L. Mohr in Dallas City, IL.
Mrs. Mohr worked as a high school teacher of English, Spanish and French. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended college at Greenville, IL. She was a woman devoted to her faith and family.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Victoria Mohr and Dr. Kayla Crum both of Dallas City, IL; one son, Lewis I. Mohr of Dallas City, IL; one grandchild, Madison Crum of Dallas City, IL; two sisters, Kathy Goldsborough of Cowden, IL and Marion Crawford of Avon, IN; one brother, Richard Payne of Hilsboro, IL; nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Cevin Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute, Illinois cemetery. There will be no formal family visitation but friends may call between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mark William Stevens
Mark William Stevens, age 54 of Dallas City, Illinois, died at 8:30 A.M. Sunday November 30, 2008 at his home. He was born January 19, 1954 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Donald and Martha Thompson Stevens. On December 26, 1994, he married
Sheri M. “Mona” Roberts in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mark was a 1972 graduate of Lincoln East High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was employed as a Conductor for Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad for the past 35 years. He was the director of the Dallas City Youth Fishing Association and was a member of the Ideal Hunting Club, National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, and the Brotherhood of Engineers. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He loved music, the Chicago Cubs, gardening, and his Busch Lite.
Survivors include his wife, his parents of Lincoln, Nebraska, two sons - Drake Dee Stevens of Olympia, Washington, Benjamin James Stevens of Dallas City, IL., two grandsons- Leland and Markus Stevens, one sister - Joy (Rick) Allen of Lincoln, Nebraska, one brother - David Stevens of Phoenix, Arizona, his in-laws, Sherry and Fred Zanotti of Litchfield, IL., and Jim and Carol Roberts of Leesburg, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, including grandfather -Base “Bill” Stevens.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday December 4, 2008 in the Dallas City High School Gymnasium. No visitation is planned. Memorials have been established for ABATE and the Dallas City Youth Fishing Association. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is assisting the family with arrangements.
