M. Jean Stone

Mona Jean Stone, age 82 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 5:15 A.M. Tuesday May 20, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born October 19, 1925 in Carman, Illinois, the daughter of Frank B. and Mona Dixon Marsden. On February 16, 1944, she married Richard H. Stone in Oquawka, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 7, 2001.

Jean was a lifelong resident of the Stronghurst area. She was a graduate of Stronghurst High School, and had worked as a secretary for Stronghurst Grain & Merchandise for 23 years. She was a 64 year member of the Rebekah Lodge, and a member of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church. She also served on the Stronghurst American Legion Auxiliary, and the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Auxiliary.

She is survived by 3 cousins - Mary Thurman of Carman, Illinois and Doris (Raymond) West of Biggsville, Illinois, and Kenneth Mead of Tarpon Springs, Forida. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister - Jackie Marsden.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday May 23, 2008 in the Stronghurst United Methodist Church with Revs. Gene Turner and Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials have been established for the Stronghurst United Methodist Church and the Stronghurst Ambulance Service.

Beulah M. Lofton

Beulah M. Lofton, 103, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, April 11, 2008 at 10:15 PM at the Blair House in Burlington.

She was born March 12, 1905 in Dallas City, the daughter of Manford and Barbara Hupfer Lofton.

Ms. Lofton was raised and attended school in Dallas City. Earlier in life she taught school in the Dallas City school district for several years. Later she worked as a federal employee for various government contractors in Middletown, IA, Minneapolis, MN, DesMoines, IA and Kansas City, MO.

She is survived by one niece, Mary Ann Hunter of Burlington, one nephew, Earl Lofton of Bloomfield, Iowa and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Eldon Lofton and her parents

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April, 15, 2008 at the Dallas City cemetery. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.

Ronnie L. Walker

Mr. Ronnie Lee Walker, 59, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008 at 3:45 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

He was born November 20, 1948 in LaHarpe, the son of Lee and Margie Hasten Walker. On August 31, 1973 he married Barbara Gillett Carey in LaHarpe.

He was a graduate of LaHarpe High School and served in the US Army during the Vietnam war. Earlier in life he worked for the Fountain Green Township and McClure Quarry. Following his military service, he worked at J. I. Case in Burlington, Iowa from 1972 - 2004. He was currently employed by ChemGrow.

He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and the Carthage VFW. He enjoyed gardening, trap shooting and hunting.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Barbara, his mother, Margie Walker of LaHarpe, two sons, Robbie Walker of Fort Madison, Iowa and Ryan Walker of Burlington, one step-son, Chris Carey of Macomb, Illinois, one step-daughter, Dawn (Tom) Todd of LaHarpe, nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, one sister, Carlene (Marshall) Adams of Avon, Illinois, one brother, Rick (Kim) Walker of Pontiac, Illinois and his brother-in-law, Dennis Castlebury of Plymouth, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his father, his step-son, Kelly Carey, two brothers, Randy and Michael Walker and one sister, Dixie Castelbury.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with his brother, Rick Walker and Robert Tillman officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the McConnell cemetery near Fountain Green. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established.

Kenneth Claude Magner

Kenneth Claude Magner, age 78 of Media, Illinois, died at 6:15 P.M. Tuesday April 8, 2008 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born December 6, 1929 in East Peoria, Illinois, the son of Shad and Zelma Hardy Magner. On August 25, 1951, he married Mable Davis in the Old Bedford Christian Church near Blandinsville, Illinois.

Mr. Magner was a truck driver for the former White & White Grain Company for many years, and served as the Media Township Road Commissioner for 20 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Henderson County Auxiliary Police for many years, and also served as Chief of the Media Station of the M.S.T. Fire Department for several years. He was a severe weather spotter for Henderson County for many years.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters - Vickie (Randy) Lucas of West Burlington, IA., Janet (Terry) Southerland of Stronghurst, three sons - Danny Magner of Media, Steve (Leora) Magner also of Media, David (Linda) Magner of Duncan, SC., twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents who raised him- Charles and Amy Hardy, one daughter - Karen Jean Magner and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday April 11, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor Pam Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove cemetery near Media. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for the M.S.T. Fire Department.

Franklin G. Rubert

Mr. Franklin G. Rubert, 80, of Chicago, Illinois passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at his home.

He was born in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Ralph and Ferne Dowell Rubert.

Mr. Rubert was a graduate of the LaHarpe High School, class of 1946, and served in the military during the Korean War. He was a truck driver for over 50 years, retiring from the ABF Co. He was a member of Union Local #916 and the VFW.

He is survived by his loving companion, Delores Fields and was “Dad” to Janet, James (Teree), Ernest (Char), Anna Marie and the late Angela (Tom) Corse, 2 aunts, Kathryn Noble of Oquawka, Illinois and Helen Goble of Dallas City, Illinois and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Betty Treder.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. All family and friends are invited to a luncheon, immediately following the service, at the Terre Haute United Methodist Church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Terre Haute United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Barbara A. Lebeck

Barbara A. Lebeck, 73, of West Burlington, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 29, 2008 at 9:25 A.M. at the Burlington Care Center.

She was born August 17, 1935 in Marietta, Illinois, the daughter of Demming and Beulah Smith Moon. On December 22, 1953 she married Albert Lebeck in Henderson County, IL. He preceded her in death on October 17, 1985.

She is survived by one son, Roger Lebeck of Watseka, Illinois, one daughter, Deborah Ewing of Burlington, Iowa, 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 2 brothers, Demming Moon of Tupelo, Mississippi and Lyman Moon of Nauvoo, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 son, Danny Lebeck and 1 sister, Marjorie Pearce.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the Terre Haute, Illinois cemetery with Pastor Algie Peterson officiating. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. Following the services all family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.

Valera M. Zern

Valera M. Zern, 83, of rural Niota, Illinois died Saturday, December 6, 2008 following an automobile accident near Colusa, Illinois.

She was born November 2, 1925 near Colusa, the daughter of Vane and Edna Kidson Zern.

She graduated in 1942 from the Colusa High School. She worked at the Farm Bureau office in Carthage, the Harmony Mutual Insurance and the Carthage Mutual Insurance offices from 1969 - 1981 and was a part time Post Mistress at the Colusa Post Office in her later years. She was a lifelong member of the Colusa Church where she served as pianist, helped with Junior Church and belonged to the Ladies Aid Society. She was also a member of the Twiddlers Club. Her favorite pastime was attending antique auctions and collecting glassware.

She is survived by several cousins and her beloved dog, Cherie. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 12, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home between 2:00 and 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for the Colusa United Methodist Church.

Linda Sue Marshall

Linda Sue Marshall, 60, of Nauvoo, Illinois passed away Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 9:49 AM at the Fort Madison Community Hospital. She was born January 17, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of William C. and Grace Lair Watts. On December 17, 1966, she married James L. Marshall in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Mrs Marshall had worked as a CNA at Carthage Memorial Hospital for several years and later worked for a dairy in Montrose, Iowa for many years. She was a girl scout leader for many years, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Madison, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband, her mother of Dallas City, Illinois, one daughter - Jimmie Marshall of Niota, Illinois, seven sons - Ron and John Marshall, both of Hamilton, IL., Lynn, Rick, and Grant Marshall, all of Fort Madison, IA., Mike Marshall of Lyons, Georgia, Brice Marshall of Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, NV., fifteen grandchildren, one sister - Betty Rieke of Burlington, IA., her mother in law- Elda Mae Marshall of Niota, IL., and one nephew - William Smith of Dallas City. She was preceded in death by her father, one niece- Mary Beth Brown, and her father in law- Lowell Marshall.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday December 1, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Leona I. Tanner

Mrs. Leona I. Tanner, 85, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 9:15 P.M. at her home.

She was born February 7, 1922 in Macon County, Missouri, the daughter of William Edward and Lottie Craine Turner. On November 11, 1939 she married John Ernest Tanner in Dallas City.

She enjoyed gardening, canning and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, one son, John Edward Tanner of Niota, Illinois, three daughters, Sally (Butch) Partin of Winchester, Tennessee, Pamela (David) Carpenter of LaHarpe, Illinois and Natalie (James) Perry of Severna Park, Maryland, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, two brothers, Wilbur Turner of Hamilton, Illinois and Wilmer Turner of Kansas and one sister, Marie Larson.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Wendy Gattis, two brothers, Waldo and Lee Turner, two sisters, Dorothy Woodside and Florence Van Houten and one half brother, George Mowry.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Appanoose cemetery near Niota with Marvin Miller officiating. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.

C. Alice Lanphere

Mrs. C. Alice Lanphere, 92, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 7:00 A.M. at the Grand Court Assisted Living in Farmington Hills.

She was born December 18, 1915 in Hamilton, Illinois, the daughter of Floyd and Pearl Law Ebert. On June 16, 1933 she married Alvin Weber in LaHarpe. She later married Dale Lanphere on January 2, 1956 in Des Moines, New Mexico. He died July 31, 1991.

She was raised in Hamilton and Nauvoo, Illinois. She worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant during World War II and as a clerk at a large chain store. She graduated from Delmar Beauty School and worked as a beautician for several years. She loved to garden and sew. In 1997 she moved to Michigan to be near her son.

She is survived by 3 grandchildren, Alice (Alfred) Diebel of Farmington Hills, Alvin (Kate) Weber III of Sterling Heights, Michigan and Wendy (Bruce) Arthur of Waterford, Michigan, 3 step-grandchildren, Ed (Liz) Dirnberger of Shelby Township, Michigan, Christine (Phil) Guilbault of Macomb Township, Michigan and Cheri (Ken) Redman of New York, 11 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, son, Alvin Weber Jr., daughter-in-law, Marlene Weber, 2 sisters, Leona Quivey Hobby and Frieda Smith and 4 brothers, Fred, Floyd Jr., Max and Clarence Ebert.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. There will be no formal visitation but friends may call between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the Hancock county Cancer Society.

G. Philip Allen

Mr. G. Philip Allen, 85, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away at 11:45 A.M. Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born August 1, 1921 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of George V. and Edith E. (Greenbank) Allen. On October 12, 1947 he married Mary E. Manuel in Avon, Illinois.

The Allen family came to Illinois in 1936, when they purchased the Dallas City Enterprise.

He was a graduate of the Dallas City Community High School and Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. He was sports editor of the college newspaper, The Megaphone; president of Mu Theta Nu fraternity and a member of the C-S golf team.

Phil served in World War II as an Army Air Corps weather officer in the South Pacific. After returning from the service in 1946, he joined his parents in publishing the Dallas City Enterprise and continued for 40 years, retiring in1986. Following his retirement, he was employed part time for a number of years as a letterpress operator at Dodd Printing and Stationary in Fort Madison.

For more than 50 years Phil was a member of the Dallas City Volunteer Fire Department, having served as assistant chief. In later years he was the radio operator at the fire station. He was also a member of the Dallas City United Methodist Church, having served as financial secretary and trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, two daughters, Patricia Allen-Stewart of Round Lake Heights, Illinois and Maria Allen of Chicago, two sons, Andrew Allen of Chicago and Anthony Allen of Kewanee, Illinois, five grandchildren and one sister, Marian Anderson of Midway, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Dallas City United Methodist Church with Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiating. Following the services, the body will be cremated and a private burial will be held at Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Fire Department, the Great River Home Health Care and Hospice, and the family also requests that blood donations, in Phil’s memory, be donated at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, 1000 N. Roosevelt Ave., Burlington, IA.

Judy Ann Melvin-Dowell

Judy Ann Melvin-Dowell, age 68 of rural Stronghurst, IL died at 3:18 P.M. Thursday October 30, 2008 at her home. She was born July 2, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Milton and Helen Bowen Stevenson. On December 13, 1958, she married Roger Melvin in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1994. On June 27, 2002, she married Sidney Dowell in Burlington, Iowa.

Judy worked as a teacher’s aide in the Resource Room of the Northwestern School District in Sciota, Illinois for twenty five years. She was a member of the Gaudy Gals Red Hat Ladies Club, the Sunshine Circle of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church, the Birthday Club, and the LaHarpe Union Church. She loved her family and enjoyed reading, cooking, jigsaw puzzles, and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Sidney, one daughter - Kathy (and Robert) Wrenn of Richmond, Virginia, one son - Richard (and Diana) Melvin of Little Rock, Arkansas, two step daughters - Erin Noble of Stronghurst, Robin Druffel of St. Louis, Missouri, five grandchildren- Emily, Amber and Brock Melvin, Tucker and Jordan Wrenn, four step grandchildren- Devin Stivers, Courtney Noble, Matt and Ryan Druffel, three sisters - Joyce (and Robert) Louden of Stronghurst, Joan (and Joe) Rusk of Leesburg, Florida, Sharon (and Robert) Farnon of Port St. Lucie, Florida, one uncle- Bill Stevenson of Gladstone, Illinois, two aunts- Rayne Johnson of Burlington, Iowa, Phyllis Saben of Biggsville, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, parents, step mother - Mildred Stevenson, one sister - Jane Kern, three brothers - Jack, James, and Joseph Stevenson, and one step brother - T.L. Henderson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday November 3, 2008 in the LaHarpe Union Church with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Glade City cemetery in Blandinsville, Illinois. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday. Memorials have been established for the LaHarpe Union Church and Community Hospices of America.
