Charles Robert Olson

Charles Robert Olson, age 73 of Macomb, Illinois died at 11:28 P.M. Saturday August 2, 2008 in the Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb. He was born June 21, 1935 the son of Glen and Leola Gaumer Olson. On February 15, 1958, he married Betty Rodeffer in Carthage, Illinois. They later divorced.

Mr. Olson was a graduate of Blandinsville High School and served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He then farmed, worked as a carpenter, and owned and operated a small engine repair shop in LaHarpe for several years. He enjoyed flea markets, collected model trucks, cars and tractors, and was active in micro mini tractor pulls. He was a member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his former wife - Betty Olson, three daughters - Becky (Tim) Shields of Blandinsville, IL., Pam Sullivan of Hamilton, IL., Jennifer Olson of Carthage, IL., six grandchildren - Caleb Carpenter, Tucker Shields, Carmen Stevens, and Michael, Paige and Grace Sullivan, five great grandchildren - Joseph, Taylor, and Jack Carpenter, Emma and Jackson Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 9:00 until 11:00 A.M. Friday August 8, 2008, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Robert Tillman officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Earl Norris Jr.

Earl Norris Jr., age 72 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 2:30 A.M. Wednesday March 19, 2008 at his home. He was born June 6, 1935 in Philadelphia, Illinois, the son of Earl and Nellie Stewart Norris Sr. In 1956, he married Judith Rae Hiles. They later divorced. On April 7, 1979, he married Betty Bowen Annegers in Alpha, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2002.

Mr. Norris managed the Stronghurst Grain & Merchandise Company for over 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing pool and any activity which he could share with his friends. He was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters - Stacey Norris of Topanga, CA., Starla Norris of Springfield, IL., one son - Stephen Norris of West Hollywood, CA., and two sisters - Mary Wagner of Jacksonville, IL., and Frances (and Orville) Baker of Riverton, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers - Herb and Harold Norris, and one half brother - Milburn Seabolt.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday March 22, 2008 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. Memorials have been established for the American Lung Association and St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.

George L. Nixon

Mr. George L. Nixon, 92, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Monday, March 24, 2008 at 6:45 PM at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois.

He was born December 30, 1915 in Lomax, the son of Fred and Hazel Waterman Nixon.

Mr. Nixon farmed all of his life near Lomax and earlier in life worked at the Lomax Canning Factory.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Waddell of West Burlington, Iowa and Irene Jones of Burlington, Iowa, several nieces and nephews, one sister-in-law, Martha Hancock of Burlington and one brother-in-law, Bob Halferty of Wyaconda, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, March 28, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery near Lomax. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established.

Daniel W. "Danny" Nichols

Daniel W. “Danny” Nichols, age 78 of rural Media, Illinois, died at 12:15P.M. Sunday March 16, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born April 10, 1929 in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Roy and Mary Trimble Nichols. On March 17, 1947, he married Nevada Riley in Effingham, Illinois. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2004.

Mr. Nichols was a welder for J.I. Case Company in Burlington, Iowa for many years, retiring in 1988. Earlier he had worked for the railroad, was a licensed plumber for Carl Jacobsen Plumbing and Heating in Stronghurst, and was employed as a rural mail carrier for several years. He was a former volunteer fireman, and had served as Assistant Chief for the M.S.T. Fire Department for several years. He also served as Elder and Sunday School Teacher at the Stronghurst Christian Church for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and mushrooming.

Survivors include three daughters - Vicky (and Ronald) Van Blair of Stronghurst, Carol (and Gene) Heap, Donna (and Chuck) Link, both of rural Media, one son - Todd (and Gladys) Nichols of Lebanon, MO., 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one brother - Rodney (and Karen) Nichols of Stronghurst and one sister - Wanda (and Lou) Burkett of West Burlington, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday March 19, 2008 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove cemetery near Media. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:30 P.M. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Howard N. Newkirk

Mr. Howard N. Newkirk, 83, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 12:02 PM at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

He was born December 25, 1925 in Campbellsburg, Indiana, the son of John and Olive Smith. On July 15, 1961 he married Betty L. Needham in Monmouth, Illinois.

Mr. Newkirk, served in the US Navy during World War II. Early in life he worked as a funeral director with his brother in Indiana. Later he worked as an auto mechanic and was service manager for Thomas Motors in Fort Madison. From 1967 - 1973 he worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He then taught auto mechanics for Southeastern Community College for 17 years. From 1990 - 2000 he was an educational speaker for Fel-Pro. He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club and it’s local chapters, the Big River Camping Club in Burlington and the Country Travelers in Washington, Iowa. At the age of 73, he earned his private pilots license.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Shirley (David) Kramer of Fort Madison and Cheryl (Darrell) Vaughn of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, 3 sons, Delbert (Ellen) Nelson, John F. (Allena) Newkirk and Fred (Tina) Newkirk all of Fort Madison, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, 1 niece and 1 nephew.

He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Frank Newkirk and his parents.

The family will meet with friends at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Saturday, January 3, 2008 from 6:00 until 7:30PM. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 PM Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Willis officiating. Military honors will be given by the Dallas City American Legion. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the PAWS Animal Shelter of Fort Madison or the Lee County Hospice.

Dorothy D. Mynatt

Dorothy Dene Mynatt, age 70, of rural Carman, Illinois died at 7:30 A.M. Monday March 24, 2008 at her home. She was born March 17, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Harvey and Ollie Mae Harris Hill. On November 18, 1956, she married Rex A. Mynatt in Stronghurst.

Dorothy was a beautician all of her adult life. She loved to garden, crochet, play cards, fish, and was a terrific cook. She was often called the “Master Blaster”, because she would help her husband with his explosives business. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Dorothy was very active in the Carman United Methodist Church, and was president of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband, two daughters, Linda Teames (and Tony Markey), Carman, IL., Patty (and Mike) Blackwood of Irving, TX., two sons - Rex D. Mynatt (and LuAnna Johnson) of Carman, Avery F. (And Betty) Mynatt of Stronghurst, eight grandchildren - Jessica Mynatt, Jennifer (and Jake) Wenig, Dane Heap, Jason Mynatt, Mark Mynatt, Tyler Teames, Lauren Hart, Brooke Teames, one great grandchild - Hayli Heap, three sisters - her identical twin Doris (and Merle) Coffey of Carman, Lois Platt of Hanna City, IL., Mary Lou Caldwell of Peoria, IL., and one brother - Jerry (and Roseann) Hill of Portlandville, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother - Harley Hill, one sister - Imogene Kemple, and two brothers in law- Robert Platt and Gene Caldwell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday March 27, 2008 in the Carman United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Carman United Methodist Church.

Mary Lee Morrow

Mrs. Mary Lee Morrow, 72, of Statham, Georgia, formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 11:12 A.M. at the Embracing Hospice in Snellville, Georgia.

She was born December 18, 1935 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Margaret “Peggy” Mayhew Holmes. On August 2, 1954 she married Richard “Blaine” Morrow in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

She was a graduate of the Joy, Illinois High School. She loved sewing, gardening, flowers and animals. She was a member of the Bethlehem, Georgia United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, 3 daughters, Donna (Mike) James and Denise (Kyle) Swanson all of LaHarpe, Diane Kornegay of Macomb, Illinois 2 sons Lane (Tara) Morrow of Monroe, Georgia and Lance Morrow of Athens, Georgia, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Karen Foglesong of Joy, Illinois, and 3 brothers, Danny Holmes of Walcott, Iowa, Jim Holmes of Joy, and David Holmes of Illinois City, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister and 1 grandson, Evan James.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 15, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home Friday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for a cornea transplant for her son, Lance.

Ronald D. Lankford

Ronald Dean Lankford, age 62 of Smithshire, Illinois died at 6:03 P.M. Sunday January 20, 2008 at his home. He was born March 8, 1945 in Havana, Illinois, the son of Gilbert and Aileen Cooper Lankford. He was first married to Janice Johnson, they later divorced. On January 21, 1978, he married Mala Heikes.

Mr. Lankford worked as a truck driver for Heil Trucking of Prairie City, Illinois, DCM Transport of Galesburg, and Twomey Company of Smithshire. He enjoyed camping, boating and family activities.

Survivors include his wife, his mother and stepfather- Aileen and Baxter Brandon, of Fountain Green, Illinois, two daughters- Lisa (and Tony) Holtschlag of Little York, IL., Laura (and Tom) Stroops of Bushnell, IL., four sons - Chris (and Tracy) Cassiday of Monmouth, IL., Kevin (and Catina) Lankford of Macomb, IL., Robert (and Amy) Cassiday of Madison, WI., Steven Cassiday of Smithshire, seventeen grandchildren, one sister - Donna Fowler of Missouri, one brother - Delbert (and Connie) Lankford of Vermont, IL., several nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog - "Sonny ". He was preceded in death by his father, one grandson - Colin Cassiday, his in-laws - Robert and Helen Heikes, and by one brother in law - Gerry Fowler.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday January 24, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor Dianne Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Raritan cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established, and will be designated later.

Clifton E. Albright

Mr. Clifton E. Albright, 77, of Good Hope, Illinois passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 4:51 P.M. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

He was born August 31, 1932 in Media, Illinois, the son of Claude Arthur and Eva Mae Cargill Albright. On July 3, 1951 he married Rosemary Carey in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Mr. Albright worked as a mechanic in California for many years, moving to Good Hope 17 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary, 5 sons, Michael of Senatobia, Mississippi, Daniel of Hemet California, Teddy of Rialto, California, Timothy of San Diego, California and Kirk of Lima, Ohio, 2 daughters, Debra Sandusky of Apple Valley, California and Teri McGill of Oxford Ohio, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

As per his wishes, no services are planned. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Contributions may be sent to Rosemary Albright, c/o Banks & Beals Funeral Home, PO Box 503, LaHarpe, IL 61450.

Kathryn E. Beals

Kathryn Elizabeth (Thomas) Beals, 102, of Sullivan (mother of the late Dean Beals, of LaHarpe) passed away 6:40 p.m. Monday August 10, 2009 at Mason Point, Sullivan

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday August 14, 2009 at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials may be made to the Highway Church of Christ, Sullivan or to Mason Point, Sullivan.

Kathryn was born January 2, 1907 in Sigel, the daughter of Elmer and Stella (Peters) Thomas. She married George F. Beals April 19, 1924. He preceded her in death on April 29, 1988. She was the retired owner and operator of Beals Shelter Care Home of Sullivan. She was a member of the Highway Church of Christ, Sullivan, the Rebekah Lodge, Sullivan and the Business and Professional Women’s Association.

She is survived by her son, Duane Beals of Decatur; daughters, Janette (Dean) McReynolds, Bethany and Joan (David) Richardson of Douglas, WY; daughter in law, Patsy (Bill) Housewright of LaHarpe; good friend, Carolyn Houser of Sullivan; 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, Dale and Dean; daughter, Clara Mae Ater; four brothers, three sisters and two grandsons.

Enid Blackledge

Enid Blackledge, 91, of Blandinsville, Illinois passed away Friday, April 3, 2009 at 6:45 P.M. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

She was born November 12, 1917 in Blandinsville, the daughter of Robert James and Lodemma Jobe Blackledge.

Earlier in life Enid worked for Radio Manufacturing and Engineering in Peoria. In 1948 she moved to Denver, Colorado where she worked as a bookkeeper. She returned to Illinois in 1970 and worked as a bookkeeper for the Sciota Elevator. She enjoyed antiques and going to auctions. She loved animals, especially dogs and would often “babysit’ friends’ dogs. She was a member of the Argyle Bible Church, of rural Colchester.

She is survived by her friend, Ruth Dudley of Blandinsville and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Carroll Robert, Bert and Lowell Bleckledge, 3 sisters, Fern Wilson, Madge Pearson and June Lefler and her parents.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Argyle Bible Church with Pastor Mike Deblois officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Glade City cemetery in Blandinsville. A memorial fund has been established for the Argyle Bible Church or the animal shelter. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.

Richard H. Brandon

Richard Harrison Brandon 84, of Springfield, Illinois formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away at 9:15 PM Friday, June 12, 2009 at the home of his daughter, Jane Olson, in Springfield .

Richard was the son of Valesco E. and Geraldine (Siegfried) Brandon. Born in Adrian, Illinois on January 7, 1925. On November 9, 1945 he married Norma Byers in Colusa, Illinois. She survives.

He attended local schools and graduated from Colusa High school in 1942. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January, 1944 and served until honorably discharged in January 1948. He served continuously overseas for 18 months, during which time he took part in the Solomons, New Guinea, Philippine Liberation and Okinawa campaigns. Medals/Honors awarded to Richard for his service were the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with nine stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

Before moving to Springfield 6 years ago, Richard had lived his entire life (except for the military) in Hancock County . He farmed in the early years and later retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa in 1989. He was a member of the VFW Post 5117 in Carthage, Illinois and the First Christian Church in Dallas City.

Richard was an active outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was also an avid gardener. After retirement he and Norma enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas where they made many new friends from around the country.

He is survived by his wife, three children, Marla Welch and Jane (David) Olson of Springfield, Illinois and Jeff (Debbie) Brandon of Spring Hill, Kansas, daughter-in-law, Sandy Brandon of Dallas City, eight grandchildren and one step-granddaughter, seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Wanda (Paul) Ensor of Holliday, MO and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by one son, Michael Brandon, two brothers Max and Charles Brandon and a sister Mary (in infancy).

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Mike Kilgallin officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the Thornber cemetery near Powellton, Illinois. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Monday. A memorial fund has been established for the VFW Post 5117, Carthage, IL or the First Christian Church in Dallas City.

Harold E. Brown

Harold E. Brown, age 74 of LaHarpe, Illinois died at 7:29 A.M. Monday March 2, 2009 at his home. He was born August 15, 1934 in LaHarpe, the son of Earnest and Ruth Smith Brown. On July 23, 1955, he married Irene Harding in Stronghurst, Illinois.

Harold was a lifelong resident of LaHarpe. He had worked for eight years at American Thermos in Macomb, and later worked as a drill press operator for J.I. Case Company in Burlington, Iowa for thirty two years, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter - Lana Brown of Des Moines, Iowa, two sons - Larry Brown of LaHarpe, Darren (Susan) Brown of Lewistown, Illinois, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one sister - Joan Hughes of LaHarpe. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday March 5, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Harry Miller officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Memorials have been established for Blessing Hospice of Hancock County and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
